What’s EXAPUNKS?
Exapunks is the latest programming puzzle game from Zachtronics, the studio that brought you TIS-100, Shenzhen I/O, SpaceChem, Infinifactory, and other games.

See the trailer here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rOIUUVFRKc

Hell yes I love Zachlikes when’s this thing out???
:siren::siren::siren:It's out right now!!!:siren::siren::siren:

So, what do you do in EXAPUNKS?
Recent Zachtronics games, or “Zachlikes”, have all been puzzle games where you solve puzzles by writing programs. This game is in the same vein. Watch the trailer above for a glimpse at how the game presents the challenges.

The EXAPUNKS Website posted:

READ ZINES - Learn to hack from TRASH WORLD NEWS, the underground computer magazine. Tutorials, hacking tips, secret information, searing commentary— TRASH WORLD NEWS has you covered.

WRITE VIRUSES - Program your EXAs (EXecution Agents) to tear through networks, replicate themselves, trash files, terminate other EXAs— and leave without a trace.

HACK EVERYTHING - Hack banks, universities, factories, TV stations, highway signs, game consoles, the government... oh yeah, and your own body.

SLACK OFF - Play ПАСЬЯНС, if you hack the server where it’s stored. Or play HACK*MATCH, if you hack the region lock on your Sawayama WonderDisc. Or create your own homebrew games for the TEC Redshift… if you hack the development kit.

What’s the setting? Is there a plot?

The EXAPUNKS Website posted:

The year is 1997. You used to be a hacker, but now you have the phage. You made a deal: one hack, one dose. There’s nothing left to lose… except your life.

Do I have to be a programmer to enjoy EXAPUNKS?
No. The game will teach you everything you need to know to play using its hacker ‘zines.

However, experience with real world programming will likely make you better at solving the puzzles.

Will this teach me how to program?
Only kind of. The game’s language is specific to this game, and the machines you program with it (EXAs) are fictional. Zach designs his games for fun rather than realism. You will not be able to play this in lieu of studying - sorry, CS students. But! The game will have you practicing how to solve problems with code.

I like difficult puzzles
Good. I’ve always found later puzzles in Zachtronics games to be drat hard. (The games scale in difficulty so people with less experience can still enjoy them.)

How will I show my friends I’m better at being a CYBERPUNK HAXOR than they are?
Zachtronics games have had the ability to compare the efficiency of your puzzle solutions against both everyone else who has ever beaten that puzzle, and specifically against your friends.

EXAPUNKS will measure your solutions based on:
- Cycles: CPU cycles needed for your solution to complete
- Size: Number of lines of code used
- Activity: Number of LINK and KILL instructions executed

They’ve even included histograms so you can eyeball what percentile your solution falls into.

We have a goon community on Steam here:
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/goontronics

Lots of people are linking their Steam names in the thread so they can add friends and compare scores.

I love cyberpunk poo poo and it just won’t be the same without physical ‘zines, 3D glasses, and a secret envelope!
It turns out Zachtronics caters to exactly your kind of nerd! Buy the Limited Edition off the website and Zachtronics will send you PHYSICAL ZINES, RED/BLUE 3D GLASSES, and a SECRET ENVELOPE CONTAINING A SECRET!

Mine already arrived and I’ve been reading the EXA Language Reference Guide in this ‘zine over a cup of coffee while I wait for the game to release.

I'm a professional computer jockey and I've failed to solve some Zachtronics puzzles in the past. Assembly is hard. :haw:

I was once stuck on a puzzle in TIS-100 so I showed it to a co-worker with a PhD in Compiler Design.

The next morning he came in with a solution written out on paper which, when I banged it in and tried it, matched the world-wide fewest cycles record.

The bastard.

Kinda amazing that Zachtronics have put out a good amount of games that are for the most part unique to one another. I mean, there are some lines of evolution (Assembly-likes like this one, from Shenzen, from TIS-100), but they have their own twists that I make it easy if someone were to go back to them from playing a later one for the first time.

This game is ridiculously good by Zachtronics standards, but also the production values are super high this time around. They're almost making VNs at this point.

The mechanics seem really cool in this one. A bit higher level than TIS and Shenzhen, and the way EXAs can duplicate and interact with each other, plus no length limits, (or at least much more generous ones) makes me really excited to see how crazy things get later on.

I don't get this game. It says you have to leave no trace, but you don't have to drop the file in the new server, or delete your EXA, or move your EXA back to your server or anything. You can just leave your exa in there holding file 200 and the game seems to count that as not leaving any exa on the server. Whassup?

If an EXA errors out at all it halts and gets deleted, and if its holding a file at the time it drops it. That includes running out of instructions. You didn't leave a trace.
