I was in Madrid earlier this year and stayed a few nights at https://www.hostalflores.com. It's like this couple has a big apartment that they've turned into a hotel. Its not what you'd expect from an Ibis or whatever, but it's right off of Gran Vía and only 50€ a night for a private double. Calle de Pozano was a nice place to go for drinks and a bite to eat on the weekend. Otherwise...I guess try out Malasaña for the night life (the mercado right on Fuencarral is nice as is the rooftop bar at the mercado in Cheuca). And I hadn't ever spent much time there before, but this last time I was there I enjoyed hanging out in Chamberí/Salamanca.
