I don't like how instanced MMOs are and a lack of a decent metagame.

Instancing was the beginning of the anti-mmo, which wow is now the king of.

I get why they did it, but you now spend 80% of the game in instances, may as well be co-op instead of mmo.

EQ was the best mmo because you met strangers and came to rely on them. You'd get a sense of the server and see some guy you grouped with 10 levels ago on the other side of the world, and that meant something.

In wow, people who aren't in your guild or friend's list may as well not exist. Even worse, they exist only as obstacles, stealing items or mobs you need for your quest.

Eq was designed to be oppressive so people had to band together to survive. Abilities were scattered between classes and you only had a fraction available to yourself without others help.

Wow you can do everything solo except raids and dungeons.

PvE elements need to he more challenging and prevalent rather than trash you have to snooze through.

All that is fine. The 300 pound gorilla in the room is the dogshit combat mechanics. As soon as I see hotkeys I don't bother. I cannot play a game that has me jamming the 1 key until kingdom come. Worse yet is setting up macros, etc. Blah.

Elite was brought up and it's a cool immersive game but one of the most hostile when it comes to doing anything meaningful or interacting with other players.

PlanetSide 2 is a mechanically fun game that has nothing going for it in terms of metagame.

The next fantasy MMO that will do well needs a simple but fun melee mechanic like the original dark souls with even the same leveling system but much slower to level.

I think you'd find players accommodating to lag and latency if the reasons were sound, like being in an enormous battle or populated city.

Also I think 'levels' are a design crutch. Wanna see more MMOs without any levels. Other forms of progression are better and don't result in people with no life being unkillable.

For sure. Just make space, make interesting. Dragon's Dogmas map comes to mind that was expansive and not very 'level' like.

That said, I do understand instancing in the case of dungeons or small, tightly packed areas. but it needs to be more of a ... Let's say, 50 - 100 people in the instance as opposed to 5 - 10.

It would be devoid of creativity or fun. A raptor would he equivalent to a rogue and be described as the dps dealer. Press one to do the talon attack. The good Dino's vs the bad Dino's idea would be scrapped. A cosmetic scar on your Dino's eye will cost 980 dino bux which translates into 9.99 but half off if you buy it in 2 hours.

Name me a single MMO in recent history that could even capture this well. Also elite stinks because there are almost no way to meaningfully interact with other players. You can't even trade with each other. Send money. Nothing.

Speaking of creative, your "checks note" thing is cute. It's the new *bursts into thread*. I would argue you're devoid of creativity.

Sandbox MMO w/ PvP will only be good if there of an equal amount of care given to the PvE content and an interesting world. Most important of all is fun core mechanics that aren't smashing hot keys. Really, get away from the hot keys and people would be down for almost anything.

Sangmar/Azeb empire is getting crushed. Every castle defense is like 50 howling Norsemen or Western European knights crashing through the gates.

It's not even a population thing. The most dominant guild just stinks and gets steamrolled on the regs.

This idea is silly.

The thing that makes Dark Souls good and interesting is the developers sitting down and designing every encounter you're going to have on your linear treck through a linear area. Then they make it interesting and challenging by adjusting from which direction enemies attack, scripting how they ambush you, setting up archers that distract you or draw you into a different ambush, combine enemy types, et cetera. You can't design encounters or areas like this with hundreds of players running around.

All you end up with if you want a Dark Souls MMO is the infinite dragon butts of Izalith. Tons of enemies carelessly placed around an environment so that everyone has something to fight and it's "technically" a challenging encounter. Yet everyone skips this part for a reason and it's very obviously a bad part of an otherwise decent game.

Like, Dragons Dogma or stuff like Phantasy Star Online 2, Black Desert or whatever are more realistic when it comes to the MMO formula (and actually exist in that mold), but Dark Souls doesn't work with tons of people running around.

Just quoting this bad post to announce loudly that it is bad and full of nothing.

The entire gameplay experience is like the first month of an MMO over and over because each server wipes progress like once a week up to once a month. It's also full loot pvp with a ton of loaded player interaction and ~RP~. It feels kinda like a semi-primitive (as in has bows and crossbows and a range of guns and a melee system) fps combined with ultima online.

Only way it is really an RPG though is that a lot of the population role plays to some extent and instead of your character getting better, you just get better at the game

Like it obviously isn't an mmorpg, but it feels similar to and tbh scratches a similar itch as oldschool pvp servers. There's also a raiding endgame as well as super hard end game content that most of the playerbase isn't coordinated enough to ever experience.

Thanks for the answer but that's pretty far away from what an RPGooks like to me
