Another day, another set of slack outages.

IRC still running fine though.

[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
we still run a freenode irc channel for work support, theres no SLA or anything but some of our beardier customers prefer it over slack

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
as well they should

I idle in a few channels on Freenode and couldn’t imagine having Slack running 24/7

the Lisp community is also still IRC- and mailing list-based

there’s occasionally a newbie who’s like “hey if we switch to Slack and a web forum we’ll get so many more people into Lisp!!!”

the result is inevitably “gently caress off millennial” as is right and good

we used irc at redhat and it was good because it kept non-technical people from participating in any discussions.

i also really loved opening a ticket to setup persistence. and then more tickets every time znc broke.

unironically worth it to prevent the proliferation of memes, though.

i like irc because its beginner-unfriendlyness and lack of features make an organization less likely to rely on it as the primary mode of communication. at red hat, we supplemented irc with email, and the combination of the two covered most use cases. irc was for ephemeral conversations, and email was for ongoing discussions.

this was nice. at my last company, we basically only used slack. it's really terrible when your primary mode of communication is high interrupt.

still, it really sucked to log into irc during some outage and have no idea what was going on because all the logs were missing.

im sure it was logged somewhere but that doesn’t matter if it’s not accessible

i honestly don’t remember the specifics, my point is that the system was complete garbage for people who didn’t janitor their loving irc setup. and that the janitoring was non-trivial due to corporate security requirements.

i'm super ignorant about how irc works if you can't tell

irc is extremely full of janitorial duties but there's no excuse for javascript based desktop clients in the recent decade being hundreds of megabytes fatter while delivering the same essential experience of fellow idiots bothering one another

every irc daemon seems completely awful and a total quagmire when trying to actually run one while reading the man pages

the institutional knowledge of networks that are decades old now is gonna be :rip: soon enough while clients don't bother using the inordinate combinations of default flags
