2022 update: jump to page 2 for new album and single info. 2018 OP follows. === Muse's new album, Remember The 80s? is out on November 9th! Check out the awful great cover art: Oh wait the album is called Simulation Theory? Sure, ok. --- Tracklist: 1. Algorithm 2. The Dark Side 3. Pressure 4. Propaganda 5. Break it to Me 6. Something Human 7. Thought Contagion 8. Get Up and Fight 9. Blockades 10. Dig Down 11. The Void The deluxe CD adds these tracks: 12. Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) 13. The Dark Side (Alternate Reality Version) 14. Propaganda (Acoustic) 15. Something Human (Acoustic) 16. Dig Down (Acoustic Gospel Version) The super deluxe CD/vinyl boxset adds a second disc of bonus tracks: 1. Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) 2. The Dark Side (Alternate Reality Version) 3. Pressure (featuring the UCLA Bruin Marching Band) 4. Propaganda (Acoustic) 5. Break it to Me (Sam de Jong Remix) 6. Something Human (Acoustic) 7. Thought Contagion (Live) 8. Dig Down (Acoustic Gospel Version) 9. The Void (Acoustic) 10. The Dark Side (Alternate Reality Instrumental) I'm so down for marching bands and gospel choirs! --- 4 songs are out so far: Dig Down https://youtu.be/b4ozdiGys5g Thought Contagion https://youtu.be/QQ_3S-IQm38 Something Human https://youtu.be/azAEHCQgcUI The Dark Side (definitely the best one and most reminiscent of old Muse) https://youtu.be/e0UWT0dFSQE --- My thoughts: I hated Dig Down at first but it's grown on me despite it being a carbon copy of Madness. I like the rest a lot, especially The Dark Side. And I kind of love the cheesy 80s aesthetic they're going for even though it's dime-a-dozen these days. I'm hyped for this. By the way if you haven't realised, Muse has been a parody band since 2006.

making GBS threads hell that cover is all awful and no great, but Dark Side is actually decent. I havent listened to Muse since they went full-on self-parody, did I miss anything after The Resistance (ten loving years ago)?

I'm looking forward to a Muse album for the first time since forever, and I can barely tell whether that's ironic or not

the Dark Side actually sounds like a Muse song. But yeah, Something Human and Thought Contagion suuuuccckkkk They’re still amazing live, though.

I'm a massive dork for the entire outrun aesthetic (mainly because I'm old enough to remember sinking shitloads of quarters into arcade cabinets), and I love the video for The Dark Side. Feels like a Carpenter Brut video met a Boris Groh painting. It's perfect 80s cheese.

Simiain posted:I havent listened to Muse since they went full-on self-parody, did I miss anything after The Resistance (ten loving years ago)? Not a whole lot. On The 2nd Law they seemed to be (correctly) realizing that they'd found the limit of their old sound on The Resistance, and tried to do something new, at least halfway. They sprinkled some dubstep and other synth stuff around, although mostly it was the overall production technique that sounded different. Not necessarily in a good way. It was a drastically "cleaner" sound. They also let the bassist sing 2 songs, one which was pretty good albeit overproduced, and the other which sounded like a mediocre Foo Fighters song got dropped into the playlist by mistake. In any event, they also sabotaged it with pretty much the worst track order imaginable. I guess the songs weren't amazing either, but there were definitely some good ones and you can rearrange the album to make it flow better. I mean like basically any other order would be better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq9zhpBweDk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU8v9q3v4zU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO49PZwTPco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXr-9tWhefo Then Drones was a misguided attempt to backpedal on the synth pop stuff and "rock out", which led to embarrassing stuff like "Psycho". It still had that same overly clean production and obviously overdubbed drums, which really didn't lend itself to the music 90% of the time. And then on top of that, the most cringe-inducing "the government is trying to control you, maaaaaan" lyrics of their career (which is saying a LOT), stretched out over a whole concept album that doesn't really make much sense aside from repeated use of the word "drones" and the vague sense of being Very Serious about Fighting The Man. There are 2 gems from Drones though: "Dead Inside", which is straight-up synth pop unlike the rest of the album, and "The Handler", which is really just good ol' Muse with a slight undercurrent of dubstep to keep things interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5sJhSNUkwQ (Phoneposting but I feel like I remember this being slightly unless I'm thinking of the other video for it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF1DQr5dKW8 I'm cautiously optimistic that the new album will be... interesting. Probably not a classic. But many of the best moments of their past few albums have been when they gave up their pretentions of being a Serious Rock Band and just had fun. So... there's a chance. The singles haven't been great, but "The Dark Side" has grown on me, and they usually have pretty bad singles anyway. Sir Lemming fucked around with this message at 19:25 on Sep 7, 2018 |

I dont get the point in making all the artwork and videos 80s inspired in concept if none of the songs actually sound like that. Except for the broad concept of 'having synths in the music' I guess but they're not particularly 80's sounding synths. So hmm. I've seen muse at various festivals 3 times over the last 15 years, at some point in their career they found this horrible boring marching midtempo groove for all their songs and got stuck in it. When they were a straight up guitar rock band at least they never had that problem, but as being a pseudo dancey synth rock band all the tongue in cheek flamboyant vocal layers and samples cant make up for how grindingly dull their rhythms are. so thats my thesis for why Supermassive Black hHole is the exact point at which Muse became a Very Bad Band ok thanks. massive spider fucked around with this message at 16:20 on Sep 10, 2018 |

The Dark Side is the first song I've liked since The Resistance, and even then I only came to that later on. These guys were loving amazing when I saw them live in 2003, but that was pretty distinctly before they became 'big' and they were really pouring everything into their shows then. I saw them in ~2009 and it was pretty much just boring.

New song “Pressure” leaked. It’s incredibly easy to find on the Muse subreddit. I’m going to wait until the official release which apparently is this Thursday. But the overall fan reaction is positive. People are comparing it to SMBH, Panic Station, The Groove etc.

First listen I wasn't sure, but on second listen, The Pressure is good. This and Dark Side represent a pretty good argument for how Muse could keep things interesting going forward. They've successfully re-framed "Museyness" in a more modern sensibility. I'm not really sold on the other songs yet, but if more of them end up like these, it could be a good album.

The album’s leaked if you care to find it - it’s really easy. I’m gonna hold out for my real copy. Fan reaction is incredibly positive which is surprising. People are loving Algorithm, Blockades and The Void in particular. Also apparently some of the alternate versions in the bonus tracks are amazing too.

There is a local band in Seattle called Bad Optics who have a pretty strong Muse influence (among other things). Never been much of a Muse fan to be honest, but some of you might appreciate it. Two vocalists who switch off lead vocal duties. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQNmm3ILJXM https://badoptics.bandcamp.com/ Fors Yard fucked around with this message at 21:42 on Nov 8, 2018 |

Album out. It good. Break It To Me is the weirdest song Muse has done since Screenager and one of the best in 10 years. Blockades is MK Ultra mixed with power metal, which is *good*. The rest is great too.

Jeez they’re bad at picking songs to promote. I was expecting to not like this but yeah, most of the stuff we haven’t heard is great! Should be good live too. -Propaganda owns. Was not expecting to groove so much. -Break It To Me is indeed weird as gently caress, but good! Awesome to see them do this. -Blockades, woo! -Algorithm, Dark Side, and The Void are all drat good. -Pressure had a lot of potential to be good, I like most of it but the “Don’t Push Me” part really ruins it for me. -and Something Human, Thought Contagion, and Dig Down are probably the worst on the album. What a relief

I... I might buy tickets for the tour next year. ~150 European funbux for cheapseats in Cologne apparently but idk. I've never seen them live (and honestly haven't seen anything live more rocky than Ben Folds live... I'm lame) but I hear great things about their shows. I'm only a few songs deep atm but so far it's pretty good. Not really catching me like I haven't been since The Resistance but still good. Edit: Break it To Me is weird and strange and kinda awesome. Edit2: Blockades fuckin' rips. Edit3: the marching band version of Pressure is stupidly catchy. Drone fucked around with this message at 11:23 on Nov 9, 2018 |
