Mmm yes... it’s almost as if we need to make sure both sides are equally heard. Perhaps some sort of doctrine... a “fairness” doctrine, perhaps... would be the kind of conservative solution so historically championed by Republicans.

The guy who won this exchange declined to press charges, stating that angry parking lot man probably learned his lesson.

There’s longer video floating around of the whole exchange. That white dude was a loving idiot and it was super satisfying seeing him get punched, but that other guy escalated that poo poo by drawing his pistol, even if he didn’t point it. There were a few points where he turned his back on the white guy too, and it looked like there was a few times when he was sizing up whether he could try to take the weapon.

I won’t fault the guy for intervening on their behalf because that dude was way the gently caress out of line. But he drew too early, and frankly was kind of lucky that the white guy was more of a loudmouth rear end in a top hat than anything.

The ground is pretty saturated as it is and I’ll be worried about some flooding as far north as DC and MD, or at the very least, trees coming down and a lot of storm damage.

My girlfriend is home alone with Lando. At least we’ve got enough food and water to last her alone for at least a week if things get a bit hinky in DC (supply chain disruptions and whatnot more than an acute humanitarian situation.)

The low to medium settings are great for normal usage, and reserve the bright for “gently caress I dropped my keys in this unlit parking lot” situations.

I would happily join the GRA and its wine club, too.

From that WaPo article, which is pretty ridiculous:

quote:

About 4,000 people are arrested each year in New York City for carrying illegal knives, many of them tradesmen who have no idea their tools are prohibited, according to the Legal Aid Society. Most of those arrested are minorities.

This almost happened to me ten years ago. I had spent my summer bike touring and doing Katrina reconstruction work in NOLA’s Lower Ninth Ward, and carried a small folding knife (maybe a 2” blade) with me, usually clipped in my back pocket. Not as a weapon, but as a tool for all those little small tasks that you might need a pocket knife for.

Coming home to NY, I got invited out to meet with friends, so I threw on some pants and walked to the subway. Walking in, I got grabbed by two cops and detained, and then was informed I was getting a ticket for having a knife open to public view- the clip securing it to my pocket. One cop said it wasn’t a big deal and I’d probably get my charges dropped just by showing up to court (which is what happened) and the other one grabbed me by the collar and said he should have arrested me for this, and if I was going to carry a knife, to keep it in my pocket so he wouldn’t see it and to only take it out when the time was right, like if I was up by a certain housing project in my neighborhood.

So basically, this jerk cop was telling me to carry a concealed weapon for the purpose of stabbing someone instead of peeling an apple or notching a board where it needed to be cut. It was loving dumb.

The Kavanaugh thing has brought back something that I hadn’t thought about in years. I went to high school in a fairly wealthy area in Southern California, and the “popular” kids were among the super rich, upper crust, hard drinking/partying type with way too much money and not nearly enough common sense. To give you an idea of this, there was one guy who spent tens of thousands of dollars tricking out his Suburban so that it was lifted like 4’ off the ground, then got so hosed up at a party that he ended up waking up with his truck parked on top of another parked car and a police helicopter hovering overhead. And he was actually one of the less lovely of the whole cohort.

My senior year, a scandal broke open that involved a lot of the shithead rich jocks and preppy types. They had this thing called the “31 Flavors” club, where a group of them had a competition going to see how many of the 31 hottest freshman girls they could nail (remember that a good portion of these dudes were already 18.) Some of the teachers got wind of this, and got the administration and LE involved. They never got enough hard evidence to go after them, but our senior class president ended up getting his title stripped because his booze-soaked website, which was oh so cleverly named after the school and contained pictures of him and his buddies partying, got discovered. One of the pics also involved someone “helping” a girl who went to another high school flash the camera.

This is why I have no problem whatsoever believing any accusation that places Kavanaugh at the center of a hosed up whirlpool of rich white kid entitlement and sexual assault. If these shitheads in my class thought they could get away with it- in an age where the consequences of putting dumb poo poo on the Internet were becoming increasingly profound- then imagine what a dweeb like Kavanaugh and his ilk thought they could pull off when the armor of upper class privilege and accompanying code of unaccountability was even more impenetrable.

I left high school hating anyone who drank, thinking it turned people into assholes at best and predators at worst. It wasn’t until I was nearly 21 that I realized that booze isn’t the issue, it’s the people who use it as an excuse to be the monsters they’ve always been or aspired to be.

I hope what’s happening to Kavanaugh is a shot across the bow for my former classmates and that they’re living in fear now.
