With this room being in disarray comes new commentaries from Kyle.

Music: Hidden Proof

Books Some books that must have fallen off the shelf are scattered around on the floor.
Fallen case Some insect specimens are just lying on the floor.

Newspaper There's a newspaper lying on the desk.

Drawers There's a chest of drawers next to the bed. The bottom drawer is open.

Keys There's a bunch of keys inside the drawer.
(They must be the keys for the apartments.)
(As if Dylan needs all these keys.)

Closet The closet is open and there are clothes in a heap at the bottom.
Angel puzzle A framed jigsaw puzzle is hanging on the wall.

Zoomed-in puzzle The picture on the puzzle is of an angel.

You know, Dit's kinda eerie about how Dylan know about this painting considering what we know about him.

Music: Overstepped Memory
Anyway, that's everything new in this room. Despite the kitchen area also being messed up, Kyle won't comment on them. So it's time to...

...do exactly that.

Knock "Who's there?" I hear Marie's voice from inside her room.

It's me, Kyle.

"Ah, Mr Hyde."

Open the door.

"Okay, just a moment."

What?
He was also the person keeping tabs on your whereabouts.
So he is with Nile after all?
Yeah, he is.
The good news is that, after I exposed him, he left.
Really? He's gone?
Yeah.
Let's just say I gave the guy a little scare that sent him packing. It should be enough to keep him away until you're safely out of town, anyway.

It goes without saying that Dylan will make no more appearances in this game.

Mr Hyde...
Here's your letter back. *gives the letter back*
Mr Hyde...

Music: Deep Distrust

I see.
Please don't worry about me.
After all, I already told you, I'm stronger than I look.
Marie...
You've helped me so much. After talking to you, I think I'm ready to make a run for it, no matter what lies ahead.
Thank you for everything.

:unsmith:

As soon as I leave here, lock the door and don't let anyone in, you got that?
And when you leave tomorrow, don't tell a soul what you're doing.

*Marie nods and goes back to her room*

This is Marie's final appearance in this game. We have plenty of people exiting the stage left and right.

(4 o'clock... I'd better make my way to see Mags.)

Music: Overstepped Memory

Knock "Who is it?"

It's Kyle Hyde.

"Oh, Mr Hyde..."

You said 4 o'clock, right? Care to open the door?
I've got something really important that we need to talk about.

"I'm sorry Mr Hyde... I'm a little busy at the moment... Could we continue the chat from this morning another time?"

Are you serious?

"Now isn't a very good time, please come back later!"

(Now what?)
(Maybe I should just head back upstairs and try again later.)

Well that was a waste of our time.

The trigger for this is at the second floor stairs, which is a big "gently caress you" if you're using the elevator (for some reason).

(Great, now Frank wants me.)

Music: Blue Lady
I've been looking for you.
I thought we were meeting later... What do you want?
You were in Dylan's room earlier, am I right?
Yeah.
He looked quite agitated when he left...
May I ask what happened in there?
He's gone. He cut his losses and left.
He left?
As it turns out, he's on Nile's payroll. Once I'd managed to get that out of him, he fled.
It's all slotting into place.
Looks like it's true about him being the person Nile sent here, then.

(You mean you suspected him?)

It seems my instinct haven't let me down after all.

Music: Gusty Town

Did you suspect Dylan?

Did you suspect Dylan?
In a manner of speaking.
Did you manage to uncover something about Dylan then?
Not directly, but I noticed how defensive he was.
So what put you onto him?
there was something strange about him. Something he just couldn't hide.

Or Kyle. Or people in the thread.

Guess he set off your detective instincts.
Yes, you could say that.
I noticed that his movements seemed deliberate, and they were done to match hers.
Hers?
Yes, Mrs Patrice of course.
And when you understand what kind of woman she is, as I do...

(What kind of woman she is?)

You would appreciate that Dylan's movement are rather suspicious.
That was the motivation behind me wanting to investigate where he was frequenting.

(Where was he frequenting?)

What kind of woman do you think she is?

What kind of woman do you think Mrs Patrice is?
Of course, I had my own information about her, but after hearing yours,

Her late husband, George Patrice, was a close friend of Michael McGrath, the one-time owner of Hotel Cape West.
He also just happened to be the prime suspect in the murder of Kathy McGrath.
You told me that you were able to have a conversation with Michael's son.
I would think that he would've told you then that he had marked a certain individual
as Kathy's murderer.
And that individual was George Patrice.
Precisely.

So George Patrice was the number one suspect, huh?
That's what the detective in charge of the original case thought at least.
At the time of the victim's death, he was absent from the party and without an alibi. Conveniently for him though, his wife, Margaret, provided him with an alibi later on.
Do you believe he was responsible for the murder?
I must admit, I do.
I see.
Not only that.

What?
And if Nile have been using Dylan to watch Mrs Patrice, then there's no doubt.
Let me get this straight... Earlier you said there was only one person who knew where the Scarlet Star was, and that person was the hotel manager, Michael McGrath...
Why then would you say that George Patrice knew?
I meant that McGrath was the only person working at the hotel who knew.
But when we're talking about George Patrice, Condor's ringleader... Well, I find it hard to believe he didn't know all there was to know.
There's something more I have to say about the Scarlet Star, though.

(You know more?)

Where was Dylan frequenting?

Where was Dylan frequenting?

He also tended to enter other tenants' room insisting he was merely doing maintenance.
I can't tell you how many times I spotted him leaving room 306, for example.
It goes without saying that he would enter Mrs Patrice's room as well.

And that is why you shouldn't give the full set of duplicate keys to your repairman.

What do you think he was up to?
Monitoring and information gathering, all to find clues to locate the Scarlet Star.
He was looking for it?
(So Dylan knew about it too? They let some underling know about the Scarlet Star?)

As you can see, the music box doesn't make an appearance in the update. It will not make its appearance in a few updates, so feel free to think about how to get the key in it.

Just closing the lid yields nothing. Breaking the DS does something, but if I do that I won't be able to continue this LP :ohdearsass:

What else do you know?

What else do you know?
I had intended to talk about that in the café...
Come on, you've mentioned this much, I think you need to tell me everything.
You're very persuasive, Mr Hyde.
This is how I see it.
Michael McGrath was in possession of the Scarlet Star.
But when his wife was killed off, he naturally became frightened...
and hid it where nobody else would be able to find it.

Of course it's in this building. It's not like we can go anywhere else.

Indeed.
And I'm positive that he left some sort of means to locate it again later on.
He must've figured that, at some point, somebody would try to obtain the Scarlet Star.
He thought that someone would come looking for it?
Yes, the same people that knew the truth behind its disappearance.
But who are those people?
Condor ringleaders George Patrice and his wife, Margaret. Mike Porter and Peter Rivet, too. Naturally, Nile would have been aware, as well.
(Mike and Peter were part of Marie's family.)
The only ones to survive up until the present day are Mrs Patrice and Nile.
(Out of all the people who knew the truth behind how the Scarlet Star disappeared...only Mrs Patrice and Nile are left.)
(Hold on!)
Frank...

There is?
You!
You know exactly how it came to be missing, don't you?
I...
If you won't come clean now, this conversation is over!
Fine, have it your way.
The reason I've been looking into the events of this building's past is to restore a certain reputation.

(Reputation?)

Whose reputation needs restoring?

Whose reputation needs restoring?
Mine of course!
Yours?
25 years ago, I was part of the investigations into Condor, Mr Hyde. During this investigation, I learned something about Hotel Cape West. I found out that this was where Condor conducted their fencing of stolen jewellery. Soon after that, an internal investigation took place and I was removed from the case.

What kind of conspiracy?
It was a plot to remove the person poised to unveil the truth about Condor.
Not only did he ruin my good name, but he also deepened his allegiance with Nile.
This person, the one who orchestrated the conspiracy... Are you talking about...

Michael McGrath?

Are you talking about the hotel manager, Michael McGrath?
The manager of Hotel Cape West had nothing to do with this. If you're not going to say anything intelligent, you may as well not say anything.
Whatever, Frank!
This person, the one who orchestrated the conspiracy... Are you talking about...

Hugh Speck?

Are you talking about the mayoral candidate, Hugh Speck?
I am.
He rants incessantly about crushing crime, which got him into the world of politics.
But the truth is it's all a front. He doesn't mean a word of it!

I knew Hugh Speck is evil! :sassargh:

I'll tell you now, my ultimate aim is to bring him and his corruption down. If I can do that, I have no doubt my reputation will be restored.

Music: Blue Lady
Mr Hyde...
Listen to me, I must sound like some doddering old fool.
I was once just a plain and simple detective who wanted for nothing.
When I was younger, I was bad-tempered and eager to prove myself. Even though I didn't conform with the norm, I did my job and fought for justice. Then that man and his damned internal investigation stripped me of everything. And all of a sudden I was just a cog in the machine, working behind a desk.

Rex said pretty much the exact same thing.

I quit my job and vowed to uncover the truth behind what happened.
Let me get this straight. Your reason for searching for dirt on Hugh Speck is to try and
expose the link between Nile and the LAPD?
Exactly.
I'm positive, Mr Hyde, that the Scarlet Star lays hidden somewhere in this building.
If I can only find it, I know it will prove to be an invaluable piece of evidence. Michael McGrath definitely left some sort of clue behind before he died.
Something that will enable me to finish what I've been trying to do all these years.
So you've been trying to find some sort of clue up on the fourth floor?

There's always a chance that somebody got to it before me and moved it, though.
Moved it?
(That reminds me, didn't Dylan say something...)

Patrice especially. I'm sure she's still hiding something in her room.
Yeah, there's no mistaking it if you've watched her like I have.
Mr Hyde...
Yeah?
What are you thinking about?
Would I be wrong if I suspected you of knowing something? Perhaps something about the place Michael McGrath hid that clue?
Dream on. If I knew something about that, you think I'd still be gassing to you?
Then forgive me. It's just that the look you had on your face made me think so.
you must tell me if you know something!

I told you, I don't know anything.
You're lying, I know it!
Look, when I say I don't know, it means I don't know!
You can't trick me, Mr Hyde. You know something and there's no denying it!
Now tell me what it is!
Hey! Keep bawling like that and you'll draw a crowd. Is that what you want?
Why are you so agitated all of a sudden, anyway?
I'm not agitated at all.
I just needed to be sure you weren't attempting to hide anything from me.
Trying to force it out of me, huh?
Well, Mr Hyde, since we appear to have exhausted this line of conversation,
I see no need to meet in the café after all.
I assume you agree? Well then, I'll be going.

Frank moves away and heads up the stairs.

(Got to give it to the old guy, he sure wants to find that hiding place. Guess he won't give up until he's found Michael McGrath's secret.)

He's still a dick either way, though :sassargh:

*footsteps*

Music stops

Mr Hyde, can you spare a moment?
What now? I thought we said all we needed to say to each other.
I wanted to apologise for how I acted just now.
I didn't intend to make you angry.

This feels like Frank made the wrong choice, and went back to make the right one because he can't move on otherwise.

In other words, there could probably be a game about Frank's investigation.

It's just like you said...
I am looking for some kind of evidence on Hugh Speck.
And that's why I need to find what Michael McGrath left behind.
I was curious to see what we could turn up if we put our minds together.
Do you have any idea where it might be hidden?
Yes, I'm sure it's in one of two places.
Either the fourth floor, in a place I haven't checked yet, or inside Mrs Patrice's room.
In Mags's room?
Yes, there's a very high likelihood that something is hidden in there.
I was hoping you might have already discovered something on one of your visits there.
But since it appears you haven't...
Come on, spit it out, what do you want to say?
If you've got something you want to say, I'd rather you just said it!
Very well, I will.

Seriously?
You're the only one who I can talk to candidly regarding this.
Let's say I agree. How are you proposing we go about searching her place?
My plan is to ask her to meet me in the café where I'll keep her talking for an hour or so. During which time, you can take a thorough look around her room.
And the small matter of a key?
Don't you worry about that. I'll see that she leaves the door unlocked.

How?

You can leave that side of the operation to me.
Does Mags know you've been looking into Condor?
I doubt it, Mr Hyde. As far as I can tell, she suspects nothing.
I'm sure you're just as eager to have a closer look around her room as I am, Mr Hyde.
Am I right?
You might be.
Then it's settled!
I'll go and ask her to join me in the café. As soon as she's left her room and come with me to the café, you should go inside.
What you're looking for is...
Yeah, I know. You want me to find something left behind by Michael McGrath.
Precisely.
Once you're done with your search, come to the café.
We can discuss what you find after you arrive.
Yeah, got it, loud and clear.
Then we'll regroup there.

Frank nods and heads towards Mags's room.

This game isn't as bad as Hotel Duck with everybody in the building being connected to Nile/Condor (Mags, Marie, Frank, Dylan, Will, am I missing anybody?), but more importantly, it at least makes narrative sense for them all to be living here, as opposed to everybody who was staying at Dusk at the same time. I think I might like this game's plot more than Dusk (with the caveat that the LPer has gotten further in the game than I ever made it so I don't know how it ends).

Music: Belief (or whichever music was picked in the jukebox)

It's time for this LP's first (and probably only) alternate timeline update. We're going to see what happens if we give our $1000 to different people.

In the main timeline, we ended up giving it to Tony to jumpstart his career.

You'll be fine

You'll be fine.
You think?
Sure, a professionally-made demo tape would be the normal way to get their attention...
but your music speaks for itself. Once they hear that, it won't matter.
I guess you've got a point.
Where did you make the tape you played on the radio?

I rented the space after the place closed for the night.
Then rent it again and record the demo there.
Give it your all and knock 'em dead!
Yeah, I think I'll do that, Hyde.
I think it's time I decided whether I'm a man or a mouse!
Thanks for the advice, man!

Sure thing, buddy :unsmith:

Music: Glass in the Hand

It's got a smooth taste with a fruity aroma and real impact. Sure, it'll get you drunk alright, but at least you'll be a sophisticated drunk. Sidney and I raise a toast and drink our fill of the exquisite brandy.

Like I said before, our second opportunity to spend our money is with Sidney.

This is certainly good stuff.
Isn't it?
It's a fine Cognac, distilled in the region of the same name. The main ingredient, grapes, are meticulously selected and kept in oak barrels.
I see.

How much does a bottle of this go for?
Close to $1000 for one.
$1000!
No need to burst a blood vessel!
Although, that's a steep price now that I think about it.
Hey, Sidney...

Get another bottle of this stuff

Take this and use it to get another bottle of this stuff. *gives the check*
Isn't this the money you won in the quiz though?
Yeah, but I feel bad that we're drinking your special bottle. I'd feel better if you could get another bottle to replace it.
Don't make the mistake of assuming I opened it just for you, Mr Hyde.
I'm not interested in taking your money either.
Please, take it.

And that's just the cost of me drinking my usual!
You only opened the good stuff because it's Christmas Eve.
I wouldn't wanna think that I was drinking it for free.
You understand where I'm coming from, right?
I think I'm getting there.
Have it your way, Mr Hyde. I'll accept your money and we can say you treated me.
Think of it as my way of saying thanks for four years' worth of eating your food, and drinking all that coffee.
Ha ha ha!

You sure you wanna waste it on me?

You sure you wanna waste it on me?
It's fine, this is my way of saying thanks. You know, for you being a customer of my humble café.
It's my pleasure. There isn't a place in town that can hold a candle to the food here.
Steady on there, Mr Hyde.
A compliment's a compliment, but that's got to be an exaggeration.
I'm going to miss this place alright.
Sidney...
Right, I think it's about time we changed the subject, don't you think?
Let's focus on enjoying this fine beverage we have before us.
Sure.

This way, we keep the check, which we can give to our third possible recipient.

Music: Deep Distrust

I see.
Please don't worry about me.
After all, I already told you, I'm stronger than I look.
Marie...
You've helped me so much. After talking to you, I think I'm ready to make a run for it, no matter what lies ahead.
Thank you for everything.

Yes, we're skipping an entire chapter.

You sure you're really okay?
I appreciate your concern.
And if the truth be known...
I'm a little worried myself, but I'm sure everything will be fine.
Unfortunately, I'm not gonna be able to see you off tomorrow.
If Dylan sees us together, he might make a move. Rex as well. He might still have something up his sleeve.
I understand.
There's still a chance that something might happen before you get out of town.

*Kyle gives Marie the check*

What's this?
It's a cheque for $1000. You never know when yu might suddenly need some cash.
I can't possibly accept this, Mr Hyde.
No arguments, just take the drat thing. You're gonna need it more than me.
But...

You may put on a brave face all the time,
but you might not be as tough a broad as you make out!
Mr Hyde...
Marie...
Thank you.
I'm sure this money will come in handy.

Notice how Kyle will automatically give the money to Marie. This means that Marie is our third and final potential recipient.

She has a very good reason to need the money too, but it's one that couldn't be said without spoiling things.

Lastly, here's some reactions to the check.

No way... Is this what I think it is?
Don't tell me you won the prize draw!
I'm crushed, man. I totally thought I'd win.

Wow, Mr Hyde! What are you going to do with all that money? reaction we haven't seen. Except Frank, whom I forgot to show the check to :sweatdrop:[/i]

"Yes, I understand. Then let's go to the café."

The sound of footsteps and the two voices trail off towards the café.

Knob

(I dunno how he did it, but the door's unlocked. "Secret Mission: Rifle Through Mags's Room for Clues" is now in effect.)

Music: Creeping Shadow

This room is still as uneventful as ever.

We've cleared out this room on our numerous visit. That leaves one room left...

(Her bedroom... I'd better search here, too.)

There we go. We have a lot to go through, so let's get started.

Plant There's a pot plant over this side. Every branch has several long, thin leaves coming out of it.
Table There's a little table next to the bathtub. Convenient.
Bottles Some shampoo bottles have been left on the table.
(These look a little pricey. Only the best for Mags.)
Bathtub The bathtub is immaculate. Does she ever leave anything dirty?
Curtain There's a light pink shower curtain in front of the bath.
Toilet The toilet has a wooden cover to match the rest of the décor.
Tissue The toilet paper holder is right next to the toilet, present and correct.
Lamp There's a small lamp fixed to the wall.
Mirror The bathroom mirror is oval-shaped. Like everything else under Mags's dominion, it's practically gleaming.
Sink There's a sink on one side of the room. Well, it is a bathroom. There are cupboards underneath it as well.
(This is nothing like the rooms she rents out. I'm almost insulted.)

Bookcase A bookcase that's showing its age. Through the glass doors I can see rows of books with discoloured spines.
(I don't need to waste any more time looking at this.)

Right drawers It's a chest of drawers. In my infinite wisdom, I'd guess that it's been re-varnished.
(Either way, she's clearly been using it a long time.)
Bed This is Mags's bed. There's a pattern engraved on the headboard.
(Doesn't look like I'll ever have any reason to own a big bed like this.)
Blanket Mags's quilt cover is bright red.
Right pillow There are three pillows on the bed.
Middle pillow There are three pillows on the bed. The pillowcases smell brand new. Or maybe Mags just washed them?
Left pillow There are three pillows on the bed. The pillows are springy and soft to the touch. Must have been pricey.
Left drawers There's a chest of drawers next to the bed. I'll take a look inside.

Cloths It's a neatly-folded pile of washcloths with a check pattern on them.
(Definitely worth investigating.)
Gloves A pair of leather gloves with an understated hue.
Lamp There's a lamp on the chest of drawers next to the bed.

Still plenty more to go!

Flower There's a ceramic vase on the table. Some of the flowers are pink and some are yellow. I think they're tulips.
Table There's a small semicircular table pressed up against the wall. Not a mark on it.

Phone It's a black telephone.
Ink There's an inkwell on the desk. I'd say about half the ink has been used up.
Pen A quill pen in a stand. Very traditional.
Notepad It's a fancy notepad. I can't see anything written on it.
Lamp There's a lamp on the desk. It's been left on.
(I wonder what Mags was doing here?)
Table In this corner of the room is a wooden desk with a drawer.
Chair There's a slightly uncomfortable wooden chair in front of the desk.
Paper Something's on the floor under the table.
What's this? Looks like a piece of paper. It's got something written on it alright, but the lower part's missing.

"We know everything. Leave this apartment and its secrets immediately. Nile doesn't forget and still bears a grudge against the wife of George Patrice..."

(This is part of a threatening letter.)
(That reminds me, Mags said something when she received that package...)

I thought it was somebody's idea of a joke at first and tore it up.
But when I saw the lack of a sender on that package just now,
the contents of this letter came back to me in a flash.
(This must be the missing piece of the letter she showed me from before. So the sender was Nile...)

Mirror The dresser includes a three-part mirror. Just in case you want to look at yourself from every angle.
Dresser Her dresser looks like one that a refined lady might use.

Brown box A make-up box covered in slightly cracked leather. Looks like it's empty.
Accessories A necklace, a mirror and various other small accessories are lying about in a jumble.
Items Nail polish and lipstick are just some of the thrilling items found in this box.
(Mags sure has a lot of make-up.)
Chair There's a soft chair in front of the dresser.
(The pattern on the fabric is the same as on the sofa and armchair in the living room.)
Closet This closet is pretty big. Mags must have a lot of clothes.

Clothes Women's clothes. I don't think I'll be trying them on.
Brown bag At the back I can see a big overnight bag.
Red bag There's a red handbag at the bottom of the closet.
(It looks like it's seen a few wars.)
White cover There's something covered in a white cloth stuffed into a corner of the closet.
(What the hell's that? Maybe I should open it up and take a look.)

Music box There's a nice-looking, ornamental wooden box inside.

(Hmm. I wonder what's inside this thing.)

New Music: Promise (music box)

Wait... There's something stuck in the drum... Looks like...a key? What's a key doing in here?

Welcome to this game's hardest. First thing you should do is click that music link; this is the only time the music plays.

As Kyle said, we're dealing with a music box. Our objective is to get the key from the music box. So how do we do that?

FoolyCharged posted:

Given the history of folding the screen to make stuff happen and the slit above the key, I'm going to go with that

Well, it moves the horizontal rod and stops the music, but nothing meaningful. Let's see what else is suggested.

Truthkeeper posted:

Clearly you need to break the music box to retrieve the key, which you do by breaking the DS in half.

...Yeah, no thanks. I kinda prefer not having to abort this LP due to "hardware difficulties" :sweatdrop:

The music box doesn't loop, so we're kicked out after the music ends. We can just go back into the music box and try again, though.

What the hell am I supposed to do? Think, Hyde!

That "R" text above the comb looks suspicious. And there's an "R" button on the DS right next to the text. What happens if we push it?

Here we go... I think I can move the key if I push this thing...

Well, obviously we push the button when the cylinder's hole is right on the key, right?

The drum's keeping it in there...

Welp. Let's try that again.

Gah! I can't get that key out with the drum in the way! I need to find a way to stop the drum moving...

Even that doesn't work. Kyle's so pissed off that he forgot a word. So what should we do? :thunk:

At least we have good music to keep us company.

Why, combining the two, of course! The tricky part is to realize that you have to actually press the "R" button (or "L" if the game is configured as left-handed).

Well, there's also the part where you need to hold the button before, during, and after closing the DS. Including while actually grabbing the key itself.

The Gamefaqs guide says that you have to open the DS only a little to grab the key, otherwise the cylinder will continue spinning. That's not true; the DS can't even know how much the lid is opened. It does make a lot of people confused as to whether this is possible on an emulator/2DS, though.

Got it!

(Hmm? The key has a Condor mark on it.)

I take the Condor key.

(Well, despite what Frank seems to think, I can't find anything from Michael here.)
(All I've got to show for my search is part of a letter and a key with a Condor mark. Maybe the key will lead to some sort of clue...)
(Almost time to meet Frank. I'd better make tracks before Mags comes back.)

Mr Hyde...
I apologise for before.
Don't worry about it.
Maybe we can chat again sometime later?
As long as that's okay with you.
No problem.
Okay, good.
Now, I must be going.

Mags goes back inside her room.

Music: Overstepped Memory
Now to share our findings with Frank...

Music: A Drink in the Evening

Ah, Mr Hyde.

Music: Blue Lady
How did it go?
I managed to have a pretty good look around while you kept her busy.
Problem is, I didn't find anything left behind by Michael in there.
I see.
It wasn't a total waste of time, though. I found this.
What have you got?
It's a key with a Condor mark on it.
A key? With a Condor mark?
Give it here, Mr Hyde!
And you should avoid trying to go any further in this investigation.

I thought we've teamed up! :sassargh:

Why should I stop? And who gave you the right to order me around?
I beg your pardon?
Sorry to disappoint you, but I've got plenty of things I still want to investigate.
I have a feeling that key's gonna open more than simply a door.
If I'm lucky, it might even reveal some of the secrets around here.
Are you trying to say you intend to return to the fourth floor to search?
drat right!
Then I'll tell you again...
Stop your investigation.
There's no need to waste your time up there. I've searched it thoroughly enough.
Just because you haven't managed to find anything, doesn't mean I won't. I've got a feeling I'm gonna get lucky up there.
Now you listen to me!

I'll be on my way.
Hold it, Frank!
What is it?
What did you and Mags talk about here?

Personally I'm more concerned with how Frank manage to keep Mags' door unlocked.

It was nothing important, we just took the opportunity to do a spot of complaining.
Did Dylan come up during the conversation at all?
It seems she was already aware of him leaving,
but she's got no idea that he's with Nile.
I see.
Anyway, I must be going. *leaves*
(Frank gets all hot under the collar whenever the subject of the fourth floor comes up.)

*Door opens*

Music: Shadowy Men

Tony...
Yo!
Didn't think you and old man Raver would be the sort to sit down together for drinks.
Yeah, well, we had things to discuss.
Hey, you're not trying to keep secrets from me now, are you?
And why would I wanna do that?
No reason, I guess.

Nice deflection.

Anyway, I need to tell you something, Hyde.
Tell me what?
It's about Betty.

You don't say!
She told me that she thinks I've changed. For the better, too.
And she wants to stick with me from now on.
Sounds like you're on to a winner there. Good job!

Congratulations! :neckbeard:

What I'm trying to say is that I owe it all to you, man.
To me? What the hell did I do?
If you hadn't been around, I would've been stuck drowning my sorrows, going nowhere.
And then how would I have gotten with Betty?
I owe you one, man, seriously.
Tony, I...
Before you say anything...
I want to find a way to show my gratitude.

Easy, Tony.
You don't want to start making promises you can't keep now, do you?
Give me a chance here, man! We don't have much time left in this old place, you know. I really don't wanna leave without having the chance to pay you back.
If you think of some way I can help out, just give me a shout.
Okay, okay, I'll think about it.

I had a feeling you'd ask that.
Do you really need me to answer? There's no way I'm gonna turn from rags to riches overnight, you know!
What if I told you I knew a way to make big bucks in next to no time?
I'd say you'd better tell me what you have in mind.
So you're interested?

The way Kyle phrases this reminds me of Tony's scam back in the beginning of the game.

Just tell me what the deal is, first.
You gotta promise me you're not going to spread this around, though. The truth is, there's a precious jewel hidden somewhere on the fourth floor.
A jewel? On the fourth floor? You are talking about this place, right?
Sure I am. It's known as the Scarlet Star and it went missing 25 years ago. I only heard about it by chance,
but what I heard seems to suggest it's hidden right here, in this apartment building.
Say no more, man! I'm in!

Got it in one, TOny.
Far out.
I think it's fair to warn you though, this could get a little dangerous.
So tell me, are you still down with it?
Down like a clown, man!
you think I'd pass up the chance to get in on action like this?
Just tell me what you need doing. Say the word and I'll get started.
Great.

And thus Tony's status as Louie's successor is cemented.

So what're we gonna do first?
That's a good question...

Got it, by the fire door on the fourth floor.
We better be careful not to go there together. If we're spotted...
You think people'll guess we're up to something?
Yeah, the people round here get jumpy real quick.

Half of them have already moved out, though.

Understood. I'll get going then. See you up there, Hyde!
Sure, I'll be up later.
Ten-four!

Tony leaves the café.

Sidney and Claire are here, but...

Music: Glass in the Hand
Hi there, Mr Hyde!
Can I get you anything?
Not just now.
Suit yourself.

Can I help you with anything, Mr Hyde?
No, not right now.

...none of them has anything interesting to say.

Music: A Drink in the Evening
Music: Overstepped Memory
Music: Sorrowful Nightfall

Music: Shadowy Men
I got the fire door open, but we've got a new problem.
There aren't any lights on in there. It's pitch black.
(Of course... Mags said that the power was gonna be switched off.)
The next problem is, even if we find a light, we don't have any keys.
Yeah, I already thought about that.
The only people who have access to the keys are Mags and Dylan.
So...if we ask Dylan, maybe he'll help us, right?
What, you wanna ask Dylan to try and get the keys from Mags?
Nah, that'd take forever...

I think he got himself a set just for the fourth floor.
Are you sure about that?
Yeah, I'm positive!
I know because he's opened the place up for me before.
Then it's settled. I'll get those keys.
Tony, you need to go and get a flashlight.
I'm pretty sure I saw a couple downstairs in the storage room.
Leave it to me!
And good luck getting those keys!
Right...
Okay, here goes nothing!

Tony rushes off and heads downstairs.

(Right, now to find those fourth floor keys.)

I'd do an audience challenge here, but I think we all know where we can find those keys.

Oct 6, 2017

Music: Hidden Proof

Keys There's a bunch of keys inside the drawer.

(This looks like what Tony was telling me about.)

Well that was easy.

Music: Overstepped Memory
Music: Sorrowful Nightfall

Music: Shadowy Men
What took you so long?
So, how did it go?
Without a hitch, that's how!
And you? Did you get the keys?
Yeah.
Knew you would, man.
Here you go.

I take the flashlight from Tony.

Now I think it's about time we searched the fourth floor.
Ready when you are!

Music: Creeping Shadow

Welcome to the fourth floor's dark mode. There's actually supposed to be a flashlight for the bottom screen too, but DesMuMe causes it to darken things up instead.

Use fourth floor keys on knob I take out the fourth floor keys and unlock room 401.

We have to unlock each door manually. I'll be skipping the rest since I'm sure everyone know how the process of unlocking doors work.

The malfunctioning flashlight makes navigating awful, so let me just change to melonDS...

There we go! Much better. Now strap in, because there's plenty to examine this update. If you don't care about these, just skip until you see Tony.

Dresser The dresser looks ancient. I guess that figures in this place. The mirror is clouded over with years of dust and dirt.
Stool The stool for the dresser is looking kind of faded. Looks like it's been repaired a few times.

Mirror It's a mirror, but it doesn't reflect much through all the grime. Finally, I don't have to look at my ugly mug anymore.
Sink This wash basin certainly seems more hotel-like than the ones in the apartments. Shame it's so covered in dust.
(I think I prefer the plain and simple kind in my room, though.)

Sofa It's a two-seater sofa.
Left curtains The curtains smell damp and mouldy. I won't investigate how they look up close.
Right curtains The curtains are closed, and they're gonna stay that way because I'm not touching them.
Table It's a wooden coffee table covered up with a big white cloth.

Can't examine the frames for whatever reason.

Curtains These curtains have seen better days.
Bed There's a huge bed on this side of the room. The mattress could really do with being turned.

Rectangular table A rectangular table has been left in the corner at a strange angle. The legs are scratched and splintered.
Circular table A round wooden table. Like all the other crap in here, it's covered in dust.
Left chair Some chairs with plush seats have been left lying around. I'd rather not go too near this one. The back is covered in something nasty.
Right chair An old chair with a plush seat. It must have been sitting here for 13 years.

On to the next room! The game really nails the atmosphere here, what with the lights being turned off and the creepy music. It's much more apparent when actually playing it, though.

Dresser The dresser's covered in a big sheet. Even the sheet is dirty and stained.
Stool The stool is covered in a sheet, just like the dresser.
Left candelabra There are some candlestick holders on the wall.
Right candelabra There are some candlestick holders on the wall. There's a pool of hardened wax at the bottom of each candle.

Closet There's an old-looking closet in the corner of the room. There's nothing inside.

Curtains Eurth, the curtains are mouldy. How much work would it really be to throw them out?
Bed There's a large bed roughly in the middle of the room.
(No doubt a leftover from the hotel days.)
Drawers It's a small bedside chest of drawers. I can't open it.
(I think something's stuck inside it.)

Table It's a table covered in a slightly dirty sheet.

There's more rooms and more descriptions of abandoned furnitures to go!

Dresser It's a dresser covered in a really dusty sheet. I won't try and take the sheet off. The dust would go in my face.
Stool The stool is all covered up.

Mirror There's a mirror above the wash basin, as is the trend in this building. I can see something strange under all the dust. Wait, that's my face.
Sink In the battle between dust and sink, I think the dust is winning.

Bathtub I write my name in the dust on the inside of the bathtub.
Faucet Another bath, another set of taps.
(These ones are pretty drat rusty.)
Toilet The less said about the toilet the better.
Tissue holder This room is all out of toilet paper. Can't even see any extra lying around. But I can live with that.

Closet Another faded old closet for me to marvel at. The doors on the left don't quite seem to be nailed in properly. They won't open.

Right chairThis chair is dirtier in some places than others...not that any of it is clean.
Middle chair There's a wooden chair. The leather covering seems to be quite worn and has become tattered.
Left chairs Two chairs are stacked on top of each other. A spider has made a web between them.
Right table Over in the corner is a table covered in a dirty sheet.
Left table A table underneath a sheet. The sheet has a few stains.
(The surface feels pretty rough.)
(I don't think time has been kind to it.)

Table It's a coffee table. What does it look like under the sheet? I'll probably never know.
Lamp At least this lamp isn't covered in a sheet.
Sofa I think that's a sofa under the sheet. The sheet is dusty and stained. I guess they didn't intend anyone to see it...

Next up is...nothing, really. We've explored the remaining 3 rooms at various points, so let's progress the story.

This room was where Dylan found the Condor mark on the wall and uses it as an excuse for how he knows about Condor.

What?
Get a load of this safe!
A safe, huh?
Got any idea what's inside?
Only one way to find out. Guess we need to take a look.

Music: Shadowy Men
Tony...
About this safe...
We'd better try and get it open.

Music: Creeping Shadow

Safe There's a safe with a dial up against the wall.

Looks like it's been here for quite a while.

Of course, the safe won't open that easily.

It's no good, this thing's not gonna open. I think we're gonna need some sort of tool.
Maybe a crowbar will do the trick.
You stay here, I'll go and grab one.
Make it quick.
Do you need a light?
Nah, man, I've got another flashlight.
Be back soon.

(Am I really gonna find the Scarlet Star up here on the fourth floor?)

Music: Clearing the Mist

While my head was full of the things Will McGrath told me last night, I was visited by somebody in the morning. It was...

Ed
No, that's not who it was. Ed definitely didn't come to visit me in my room.
I did get a call about him checking out of hospital early, though.
Mrs Patrice
No, that's not who it was. She was the second person I met. I met somebody else before her.

Ed never bothered visiting us :(

Dylan

Dylan was the one who paid me a visit first thing in the morning. He was itching to find out what Will and I had spoken about.

They interviewed the store owner, who described a woman that appeared on the scene. The description reminded me of Marie, so I went and had it out with her. She fled to the roof and eventually confessed to me about...

The details of Jack Green's article
No, that's not it. Rachel told me about Jack Green's article.
Tony's song being recorded
No, that's not it. Tony himself told me about his song being recorded when we were at Lucky's Café.

Her brother and husband working for Condor

Right. She told me about her brother and husband once working for Condor. She went on to say that Nile had forced her to play the part of the mysterious woman.
I also had the opportunity to talk to Rex, who came to the roof as well. He let me in on the fact that he plans to expose Nile to the world.

I learned that it was none other than Dylan who had been threatening her. We had a chat and he admitted to working for Nile. His job in the apartment was...

To look into Marie's insurance
No, that's not it. Dylan wasn't at all interested in Marie's insurance.
To perform maintenance
No, that's not it. He was only using the maintenance thing as a cover.

Then why did Dylan causes us a Game Over when we lied to him about Marie's insurance? :sassargh:

To watch Mags and find cues about the Scarlet Star

Right. Dylan was placed in this building to keep an eye on Mags. While he did so, he was trying to uncover clues about the Scarlet Star.
When I exposed him for what he was, he quickly fled from the building.

He told me about Nile and the connection it had with the LAPD. He also let slip that his goal was to expose Hugh Speck and regain his reputation. Lastly, he told me that the one who knew the location of the Scarlet Star was...

Kathy McGrath
No, that's not who it was. Frank didn't say it was Kathy.
George Patrice
No, that's not who it was. Frank didn't say it was George.

Michael McGrath

He told me that Michael knew the whereabouts of the Scarlet Star. He also said that he was sure that Michael had left behind some sort of clue.
Thanks to Frank, I now know more about the Scarlet Star. I also learned that Nile was the organisation behind Condor, and that Mags was connected to it all.

I was keen on finding this so-called clue that Michael had left behind and with Frank's help luring Mags away, I was able to search her room. Unfortunately, my search proved fruitless and I never found what I was looking for. Instead, I found...

A hat and sunglasses
No, that's not it. I found the hat and sunglasses in Marie's room.
The fourth floor keys
No, that's not it. I found the fourth floor keys in Dylan's room.

A shame "the trickiest puzzle in the game" isn't an answer :v:

A key with a Condor mark

Right. I found a key which had a Condor mark on it.

Music: Mulling It Over

Tony and I then made our way to the fourth floor to take a look around. There's little doubt left in my mind that there are clues to be found here. But will it reveal the clues that Michael left behind? And where is the Scarlet Star hidden? Will I find something to shed light on the truth behind the incident with my dad? With any luck, everything'll become clear once I find what I'm looking for. But as I think about it, I notice an uneasy feeling creeping into my mind.

No chapter intro for this one.

It keeps beeping as I slowly regain my focus. By the time I'm fully conscious, the beeping's stopped, but not the pounding in my head. I find myself lying on the floor for some reason... My body feels like a lead weight, and my limbs are like rubber. No strength... My head's throbbing and my throat's hurting, too. As my eyelids slowly open, I'm treated to a scene of utter darkness, punctuated by a single point of light.

Music: Creeping Shadow

pain in my eyes and I force them shut once more. Tears seep out from beneath my closed eyelids.

Can't come up with a better answer, so I try and think back to the moment it happened... Whatever that stuff was, it certainly did what the sprayer wanted.

I try to stand, but then realise I'm unable... My hands and feet have been bound.

As I try to endure the pain from my eyes and my head, I attempt to lift my eyelids. I manage to focus on a dimly-lit room. I regain my sight and manage to get myself into a sitting position. I look around.

Music: Deep Distrust (This replaces all map and examination music from now on)

With Kyle's hands and feet tied, all he can do is hobble around very slowly.

This is even tougher than I thought it'd be.
Still, if I take it slowly, I think I can get a little mobility.

We can't examine anything that's not covered by the light, so our range is very limited.

There's a vase on top of an unsteady-looking table.

Hmm... I think I managed to shake the vase a little...

Let's ram into it again!

I slam into the table using my body.

Almost...
Just a little more...!

Third time's the charm!

Got it!

Shards The shards of the broken vase are littering the floor.

Right, now to put one of these shards to good use.

I stretch one of my fingers out from beneath the rope and snag myself a shard.

I sever the ropes binding me with the shard.

:woop:

Good to have the use of my hands back.

Good. Hobbling around on my rear end for the rest of the night wouldn't be my idea of fun.
(Now I just need to find the joker who thinks they can get away with this.)
(I'm worried about Tony, too. First things first though, I need to get out of this room.)

Knob Looks like there's something on the other side jamming the door shut.

Of course things wouldn't be that easy.

Crap! I'm trapped in here.
What the hell am I gonna do now?

And that's where you guys come in with this :siren:Audience Challenge:siren:

We're stuck in this room, so we have to get out using the items here. We examined this room before in this update.

Obviously, there's one big difference.

Broken vase The shards of the broken vase are littering the floor.

Shards The floor is covered in pieces of the vase that was on the table.

These shards aren't how we're going to bust through the doors, though. Spoilers, I guess.

In the meantime, let's look at the descriptions. Let's start with our new items.

Music: Sobering Dream

Next up we have the updated character descriptions. A lot have changed since we last took a look at them.

I think we last took a look at these right before we got into Will's room.

I just noticed that the characters are smiling after we finished with their confrontation.

I forgot when George's description updates. It's probably after our talk with Frank.
