So this is the 4th mystery motor I've ripped in to - the last one was a hit so I guess I now have a problem in that I'm now chasing the jackpot of opening one of these up to find some trick poo poo. My buddy came over and bought some of this banger junk including the other complete motor that was sitting on my front porch - he bought another block and took one of the vintage stands with him to copy, as he's a woodworker, in addition to that he helped me muscle this one up on to a stand   I started with the wire wheel, cleaned it up pretty good, I pulled the oil tube, looks pretty clean inside, older oil... no real contamination. They can go to 125 safely but.. sometimes they develop heating issues, but this is an diamond block... theyre thicker and yes, I know the pistons are supposed to be somewhat loose like this, but this is a bit too excessive for me. There's not too much twist so there's a possibility the bottom end may be ok - and if it is.... maybe I'll build it and send it, or build it and put a big flywheel on it to power something in my back yard. I used the "phone a friend" option to call my 85 y/o friend Ray who said "nah I dont want it." but when he told me about a nice fresh rebuilt engine he has at his house for a reasonable price.. he said he may consider taking this one in trade for some bucks off - I didn't mention ray had a heart monitor installed on him a few days ago and he was "really pissed that doc said I can't lift anything over 10 pounds" "what the hell does he know" - Ray is a national treasure and most of our conversations are spent laughing with each other. The last time I talked to him he said something that was so funny and off color that I just burst out laughing, I dont even remember what the joke was, but in turn, that made him laugh and we spent the next, no poo poo, 10 minutues laughing with each other. I hate that I didn;t get more time with guys like Ray and my late friend Frank - I get pissed that their kids don't value their work, I get pissed that at nearly 40 myself, these guys have been here all along. Talking to them takes me to a better timeline, the timeline without Biff's casino, but when I hang up, or leave these guys places I come back to the Biff timeline. anyway, I went to an antique swap and met a dude whos dad passed and he was selling lots of cool stuff - I wont see him for another few weeks but i really need to - I wound up buying this $200 accessory NOS fog light for $10.. cant go wrong with that..  more later

That piston is loose enough to be in slappy-town and the block maybe should be decked...but then you're into replacing the seats bc the valve faces probably would be proud. I want to move to southern California for a year, just to hit the garage & yard sales.

So I started a new job and while its great - its also very boring and I'm quickly realizing that what I did before this was pretty special and wild - and it also reminded me that I was being underpaid for what I was doing... oh well, we'll see what happens I haven't had much time for anything car related but I have been really enjoying my roadster.  I find spring and fall to be the optimal roadster weather.. so much so I entered a... thing..  The Pasadena Roadster club is a very VERY old club and since the mid 40's they've been doing a reliability run thats been mostly yearly since then here's some photos to prove it https://www.motortrend.com/articles/pasadena-reliability-run/photos/ in other news, I went to a swap last weekend and picked up this interesting distributor    so a little research tells me that this is a fordized version of a ww2 jeep distributor - but it also looks like autolite parts fit it - meaning I can get stuff for it from Brillman! https://brillman.com/product/autolite-prestolite-pcr-distributor-tune-up-kit-points-condenser-rotor/ so who knows! I have to call them - its also missing a clip which worries me. my friend came by with his newest creation "little big foot"   if you look past the beverly hillbillies aspect of it, he's stacked 2 frames on top of eachother, lifted it and put 21" wheels with MASSIVE tires - its wacky, hes wacky.. speaking of big - last week I went out to dinner and this silly rear end truck parked next to me, the smallest guy at the restaurant was driving it.  to continue the theme of "big" - I spent some big money on a silly new dishwasher  and to round things out, keeping me out of the archives - I pulled this sucker out to sell -

The easiest part to score for that distributor would be a retaining clip. You can fab one pretty quickly as well, but I'm betting a Jeep part will fit. And it's in great shape! very little lobe wear, & the screws aren't stripped/beat up. Great score! You're going to love the Bosch. The weather hasn't been cooperative here in NJ yet. Had my top down once, about a week ago, and it was glorious. Been crappy ever since so I replaced the convertible top bow seal. Hopefully, it will actually...seal & not rain on my passenger seat in inclement weather.

Oh aircraft office chairs? Here's mine    The cool thing about mine is that the frame and legs are magnesium, and its shockingly light - I got this from a garage sale and it was quite broken - I had a guy weld on the ring to retain the legs but my choice of 1/4" rod was a bit too small, and I just used the wheels that came with it that really were not quality, so I very quckly broke one of the flanges that he welded on - I have to re-do it but its not super high on my to-do list Most likely not a p-38 seat - seats like that were usually in larger planes for radio operators or non pilot positions - I know there were plenty of seats that looked like that that could be put in as aux passenger seating in to larger cargo planes. That price is more than a bit cheeky considering it just has some office depot special swivel base on it. also, I don't think theres too many folks who'd really want to strap themselves in to their office chair - those belts have a fair bit of value not attached to the chair - no where near 2500 bucks worth of value. I got a cryptic text from a friend earlier today with this photo...  turns out he was at Jay's today and passed him a tee from our drags - I designed this shirt - so Jay now has a real LBX original which is pretty cool - there will be more about Jay soon, stay tuned. On Feb 27, 1997 I was home sick from school, I can't recall if I was actually sick or if I was just faking it to get out of going to school- back in those prehistoric days we had tv and no internet. I was on the couch watching tv and a special bulletin popped up talking about some bank robbers, a few miles from my house, shooting the everloving gently caress out of everything.. I quckly realized I had heard a lot of sirens and helicopters shortly before that.. scenes of the movie Heat were dancing in my head, and come to think of it - that could be a "meme" within itself - So many people my age remember seeing movies like "Heat" when they were most likely way too young to see stuff like that- die hard, true lies (boobs) and pretty much any Arnold movie.. anyway, I was glued to the TV Anyway a few hours later my father came home wild eyed and super hyped (he wasn't the best guy and was most likely blasted on coke) and explained to my mom that he was at the gun shop when all of a sudden the cops busted in and basically cleared the shelves and that there was some serious poo poo going down - by that time the coverage of it had ended and I was probably watching something else - he came in and took the remote and turned back to the coverage of it My dad was a gun collector, he was kinda bonkers and he took any opportunity when my mom wasn't around to ease me in to the idea of guns - of all his shortcomings, responsible gun ownership was not one of them. He was very responsible with them, how he dealt with them and even kept everything extremely and shockingly legal - it was probably the only thing that he kept legal. Anyway, he had taken me to this particular shop a few times, my mom hated me going to places like that with him - all the while I was rather indifferent to it - I also was extremely bored when I'd go to that shop with my dad. only a few short years later, the shop would be gone, dad would be gone and so would my care in firearms - I still have a few, but mostly (duh) historical stuff. It's all locked up and now that I'm a dad, I see absolutely no reason to expose my son to it ANY time soon. Only a few years after that, it was all gone, my dad, the shop, the memories.. Anyway a few years ago I was at a car show and I saw an old lady poking around and her sweater unlocked deep, long forgotten memories. I asked her politely if I could take a picture.  so I copied it  I did this because I wanted one - I don't think I'm going to sell them - the climate is very off right now. What do you think? Well-executed. Also I get your point: you could sell a ton of those...at gun shows or other places that would attract a clientele that may not be the most attractive to one's world-view. Still lobbying to put that card on a T-shirt. Front & back, like the guys I'd see at Hershey & Carlisle with ads pinned or Sharpie'd on their shirts. I have been super-tempted to have a few printed up for myself only but I'm not big on cribbing other people's work without compensation.

 one of the scariest earthquake experiences for me was maybe about 8-9 years ago we had a 5.0 roller that happened as I was on a big freeway overpass - I was in my 58 caddy at the time - one second I was in one lane, the next I was not in that same lane. while that kind of thing was not uncommon, this one felt pretty weird. I was en-route to my wife (then girlfriends) house and she called me pretty quick, she said "did you feel that?" and I literally said "oh thats what that was" in other news, this thing is back...  and its not leaking... yet...  but the wrap on this smugmobile looks like an oil slick - for my next trick I'm finally going to hang this thing up

It was my fourth east coaster since 1982. This was the third-strongest ever measured in NJ. West coast folks would hardly notice. The one that got me good happened IIRC around 2011. Mostly because I was on the 7th floor of the Arbitration Center in Philadelphia. Walking alone down a hall, I suddenly veered left, then staggered right. Thought I was having a stroke until people spilled out of the arbitration hearing into the hall. Market St was filled with people after that one. In other news, picked up a Solex.  Not sure of the year, probably mid-80s. Looks like it hasn't been run much since the seller (Air Force vet) brought it back from France in 1988. It's complete (the seat is on a bench right out of frame, laughing) right down to the Euro valve stems for which I have no air chuck. It's going to be disassembled & refreshed, probably re-painted. Years from now I want to build a shed bar that's vaguely art nouveau/ deco styled. While I wait I picked up this playing card set and silver plated case, I think it's 1930's in origin but I haven't found much on it  Sadly the hinge is broken and I wouldn't know the first thing about getting something like that fixed - jewellers maybe? The queen of clubs is also missing but I think the chances of finding a matching one are slim to nil

well, i dont want to spoil things, but if you visit the tail-o-the-pup, Lucky Tiki isnt too far away - Funny story about TOTP - the pragmatic hot dog has changed hands several times since it was dismantled after its last placment, and at one point it belonged to another friend of mine, I got to see it and examine it very close... what an amazing piece of history.. A less happy ending would be a local place, Phils Diner...    this stood for a long time in north hollywood, when I was a kid, my grandfather and I would go there, have some breakfast and just enjoy an old train car diner, one of 2 left in LA - when I was in college I met a guy that actually owned the building and had been paying storage to keep it in a vacant lot for near 20 years - he finally got the chance to place it, and the place he chose for it was very much not right...
