Do you guys have those cards in your town?

It's a shame thing here in the LA area - its one company that passes out these cards on... what they deem to be junk cars... many years ago when I lived in and monoploized a cul-de-sac with 4-5 classic cars - I managed to collect a pretty good stack of them, and I'd leave them on friends cars just for the poo poo of it.

... and it happened to me more recently

so I wanted to make them in to a sticker, and i didnt want to give props to the actual company - the 555 numbers are the standard - and the 818 and 323 are the two area codes to la!

I'll list them soon!

smalllllll world - What a beautiful car! those have some really cool unique stuff going on with them- still has the original drivetrain?

I wish la had "the fall colors" like.. you know... everywhere else aside from the southwest...

Funny enough, I just had an encounter with one of those, literally yesterday..

I took the car back to the transmission shop shortly after I discovered the leak, he had it for almost 2 weeks, this guy is really weird, but at least hes very transparent about things. he didn't charge me anything, and last time I got the car back, the battery was stone dead - there's another 150 bucks right there. - When I got the car back THIS TIME I started it up and I heard a tinking noise near the front of the motor and a small exhaust leak- I made sure he was there for this - to my dismay the fan had 3 badly bent blades - WHY would this happen if they were working on the transmission... whatever, they were easily bent back, I understand the exhaust leak, the flange never really seals well and they obviously had to remove it to service the transmission...

Whatever, its been 2 days, I have my car back and it hasn't leaked a drop, and I took it on a mildly difficult drive straight out of the shop

I spent half the week in the hell hole known as las vegas for work, but at least I made the best of it by getting to my favorite tiki bar

and indulging my love of neon.

I've never flown in to vegas before - a 3-4 hour drive is always more fun to me than flying - a flight from here to there is a bit under 40 minutes... barely enough time to suck down a v8 (why is it that people crave these when flying) or room temperature water.. but there was something at the airport I've known about for a while that I wanted to see...

here's the story and some great photos of it

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/longest-ever-continuous-flight-1959/index.html

theres a few other things that I thought were cool in that same general area

to go from history to modern life...

I also got to go to the new Sphere thing to see a movie - First thing that I have to say about it is that it is pretty incredible, a real experience for sure. Its so huge, it sounds so good and it really does ask some questions about what experiences will look like moving forward.

I saw a buddy there

and here's a non exciting picture of the outside of it

I didn't even bother to take photos inside of it - theres no shortage of youtube videos of it, but I can really say nothing will do it justice, you have to see it for yourself.

about the movie itself:

the movie was one of the dumbest premises, its your typical "blame humans for everything thats wrong with the world - its a narration about the history of the world to space travelers that had to flea earth because we hosed it up so bad - i felt the really missed the mark on doing some fighter jet shots or car racing shots or just some "America, gently caress yeah" stuff - the premise if the movie is dumb, but the visuals are mind bending - they put rumblers in the seats too so your rear end is getting bass blasted and its pretty intense - pretend the movie doesn't have a plot and you'll love it more

the city is so hosed up because of the F1 stuff coming to town, it is almost non navigable we had to walk several miles from the sphere back to the hotel, and with the lovely smells of human feces coming from just about everywhere, I was not enthused.

upon my return, I just wanted to do some car work so I pulled the radiator

looks pretty cool like this

and I had a visitor that inspected the rusty radiator

Friday we had our 3rd annual creepy cruise -

started off at my place

yesterday we were cruising around and found probably my favorite halloween decorations ever

my buddy had this awesome light bar

that reminded me of a photo sereis i saw years ago like this, but they were all shot at a junk yard - I have to find the source of those pics....

heres some crappy footage from the cruise

https://i.imgur.com/Y1SvE6s.mp4

there were about 100 cars following me up canyon roads to a cemetery at the top

anyway! if I find time this week, the 48 buick is getting the radio treatment just like the wagon!

more later!

Not to mention making it tough to walk anywhere on the east side of the strip for a bunch of blocks, especially with the wheelchair we got for my wife when there was too much walking involved.

Also, I wish I'd have known about that tiki bar when we were there...

I have to go back in early december - hoping its all cleared up by then - in addition to Frankies, there's the Golden Tiki which is fun, the peppermill thats a total 70s cocane fueled nightmare of a fantastic restaurant and of course the golden steer which is a classic red booth steakhouse thats been there forever. there's a few people left in my company who still think I'm cool so I've been pressing them hard to come out to these old places with me.

I think what I want most out of life is raising my boy with the same excitement and experiences that my mom raised me with. Incredible things that are not necessarily expensive, but things that benefit you in other ways.

I don't want him to fall in to the trappings of the modern kid and I want him to know that his mom and I gave him as many fun things to remember as I can. So many things in my life were dictated by my mothers unwavering dedication to the same things. Driving around and seeing things through his eyes pushes me hard, and I put myself in the shoes of my mom driving me around as a kid doing drat near the same things. The things that come out of my mouth remind me of my mom and I get all choked up like a big ol' bitch nearly every day - subconscious memories unlocked nearly 40 years later are a hard pill to swallow for me.

With that in mind, last weekend was huge - we did quite a bit and logged a lot of miles on the old LX

Saturday was spent at the So Cal Railway museum, which is a SUPER rad facility. Multiple tracks to actually run functioning trains and trolleys, super fun little towns and enough room to host cool events like semi truck shows and vintage machinery shows. Its amazing to kids and adults alike. The people that work or voulenteer there are also arch nerds and characters of the highest order - including ex disneyland and knotts berry farm engineers.

https://socalrailway.org/history/

My wife is super active with other parents at the school and organized a trip to their yearly Thomas the Tank Engine day - which was super fun - lifesize thomas trains pulling the museums cool restored rolling stock - the kids lose their poo poo.

I was in charge of 2x 3 year olds so I didn't take too many pics

https://i.imgur.com/r1EgyTF.mp4

they had 3 real ex-LA street cars running.

but all in all this was my day

anyway - it was fun, he had fun, but the fun of this museum was overshadowed by the Thomas stuff, which is fine, but kids wanted to be kids.

The next day I woke up early to go to a swapmeet with the homies and did a bit of a test and tune

https://i.imgur.com/mZZMdj6.mp4

bonus shot from when I was doing some adjusting the other day

https://i.imgur.com/PVMQSIr.mp4

the car has had a lifter knock that comes and goes for years now - The other day I got buck wild and started doing some adjustment - I've never messed with this before - I was gabbing on the phone to a buddy who has and I didn't realize how simple it was - the right way is a bit complicated, but doing a quick adjust just to find the source of the noise was super simple - I got the loudest knocks out of it, but there are a few that need a few more turns - I'm going to do it right soon and get the full adjustment in - but shockingly this really woke the car up power wise... hmmm.....

so all of that because... while I was out near that museum - I drove past this..

https://www.streetlegaldragway.com/

and had some a thought that I might elaborate on later.. but this is an... interesting... concept - a 330' drag strip, half of a 1/8th mile. It just opened and is gaining some real traction in my circles, they had a news piece come out on it and its blowing up - another friend of mine is a reservist stationed out there and he went to an event they had and said it was pretty cool. A real "tree" that can be set for any style of racing, and an ever increasing cash pot for getting the "perfect light" aka a 000 reaction

The whole idea of this place is that if you have a steet legal car, you can run there, if its a closed car, you don't even have to wear a helmet. just an interesting concept - they also somehow managed to get a contract with the city for this to operate for 5 years - meaning the housing track that was just built NEXT DOOR to it cant mess with it for at least 5 years at which point they can re-negotiate it.

So I google earth'd 330' on my block and jamed on it to see what it would feel like... kinda interesting, but also feels a bit short. hmmmmm

Anyway, after being throughly overdosed on other peoples children, I said gently caress it and we were off for something that I felt was super important

homie wanted the same shirt as me, so I guess he's in my club now

I had told him that we were going to go flying for the first time and he kinda got it, but I had had this in my mind for a long time that I wanted his first flight to be something really special

Nice try Lao Che....

The Ford Trimotor was essentially the first passenger plane, up until then, planes were mostly in their infancy and the public was still a bit weird about it. They made 199 of these. The one we rode on was built in 1929 - my wife and I had ridden on this plane back in 2015 as well.

He was not nervous at all leading up to it - they let us get on the plane first to help him get the booster situation sorted so he could see and then he started getting a bit nervous.

he didn't let go of my hand the whole time. I was a blubbering mess watching him experience this amazing thing for the first time in such an amazing way. I was literally crying with joy and trying to hold it together enough to show him things out the window - I had told him a "story" about flying a few weeks earlier because I was going on a business trip about how things that seem big every day all of a sudden get very small when you fly in an airplane.

These planes are loud as hell inside so he didn't have very much to say while we were up in the air - when we first took off he looked very nervous and said "I DONT THINK I LIKE THIS DADDY" but he slowly warmed up, he'd throw me nervous looks and I'd point at something and he'd snap out of it and focus on what I was pointing out - never letting go of my hand.

The flight lasted about 30 minutes and as soon as the plane landed and the engines throttled down he lit up like a christmas tree, let go of my hand and the first thing he said was "can we do it again tomorrow?"

he was saying "I cant believe I flew on an airplane"

Mom and him got off the plane first and I totally broke down, straight up crying like a baby, and im tearing up as I'm writing this - I told the pilot that he had just given my son his first ever plane ride on this plane and the pilot, who was most likely younger than me, nearly poo poo his pants, he ran over to get a little poster and he said "I hope you dont mind if I sign this for him" - he loved it, and held it close to him the whole way home.

I finally got my poo poo together and got off the plane and he was literally running around the plane to all the old guys that were showing him all sorts of stuff about the plane - one of these guys said "ive never seen a kid so interested in this, and to be honest I dont think most parents these days would let their kids do this, let alone be interested in it"

When we were leaving that old man came back over to us and told me "I wanted to tell you one more thing before you go, your son and Neil Armstrong now have something in common, their first plane ride was on a Trimotor" that really got me.

Sadly one of those little bastards at the train thing got him sick, but even under the weather, he's still going on about how cool it was and how he loved it, and now its his goal to go on a plane, a train, a boat and a old car all in the same day

I've

been

really

busy.

and yesterday, this happened:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSYwcTdplPk

you can see me make fumble words at about 2:50

I landed home from a work trip at about 11p on Wed night - thursday I put in a solid 10h day at real work, then started packing and getting the car prepped - It had been about 4 months since I started it, and it came to life with a few cranks - threw some Marvel in the tank, oil and a few splashes down the carb throats.

So now that its over I can give a bit more of a breakdown - the track is a new thing, its only been open a few months. We came to the owner/organizer with a very simple idea - you take the money, we promote it, we sell merch, you do the run of show.

Most everything worked out, we got there about 11a with a start time of 2p - we had to tech in cars, get car show stuff staged and get food vendors dialed and make sure things were going to plan. Again, the track is new, and its a new concept, there were definately hits and misses, and in my mind, they kinda canceled eachother out.

First off, the track guy that was doing tech... yes he was doing his job, but these cars are old, and this was just too much for this young man to handle - we had to calm him down, pack another zyn in his lip and tell him that there wasn't a single car there that wouldn't have a single leak. by the end of the night we could very much tell that he was ready to mother gently caress any one of us that even said a word to him, so we put him on ice.

the staging was weird and too short, cars coming off the track didn't know what lane to pick - we had a grudge lane that sent 2 cars at a time and 2 "run it" lanes where you raced whoever was next to you - this was at the tracks behest, and honestly, it was a cluster - the grudge line was long as hell and cars were literally just grudging from the other lanes too - we had a lot of redundancy, frustration and just general mayhem.

There was a LOT of racing, 80 registered cars went SO fast - some guys got 9-10 runs

So anyway - 2 came and went and the drivers meeting lingered on - at one point one of our guys whispered in the track guys ear "they get it, please lets race" - racing got started about an hr late, our original shut down time was 8p - the guy was very apologetic and gracefully gave us another hour.

the LAST thing we needed was for someone to oil down the track....

it was me

Full loving Sent that 93 year old transmission to the grave - I just wish it was more violent - it literally felt like the car just popped out of gear.. the starting guy started yelling and screaming "Stop I can see your gears still spinning"

The original trans has been a real soldier for many years of my abuse - me and the guys may or may not have done some dirt lot donuts just moments before..

This would have been the first time I'd ever taken the car thru a true "tree" timing system - everything else I've done in this car has been very analog as in girl with the flag drops said flag and someone at the end of the track tells you which lane wins. I was so happy I'd finally get actual timing slips to get some hard data, but nah - who needs that.

I'm falling asleep so pic dump

more soon -

Nope, blew up on my first pull, they pushed me back next to the announcer booth and thats where the car sat the entire race - so some of the pics coming out of cars sitting on the line have my car in the background

The youtube guy is a really good friend of mine, he's not that cringey in real life, but he found his niche and covers pretty much all so cal car shows - he used to own a vintage vespa/scooter shop and I've been pulling cars with him for years and years - his father had a movie car business and just tons of beautiful cars from the 40s to the 60s. He's getting a lot of traction, and actually told me he turns up the cringe because thats what the people want - he also shared some figures with me about how much he makes from doing this and honestly, he's killing it... from going to car shows... and being awkward... makes you feel like your in the wrong line of business.

This time of year is always stressful for me , with the super bowl just around the corner, every day is a struggle to get things in order so that we can enjoy at least a week of vacation between christmas and new year - Dec 31 is one of my favorite shows - the horsless carriage holiday motor excursion - for nearly the past 10 years, me and my friends disrupt the show by bringing period correct hot rods to a show where hot rods are considered "ruined" - yet stock appearing model a's with pinto motors, ac, cb radios and other senior citizen comfort devices are welcomed with open arms - We like to eat their donuts and try to get written in their wills.

I'm sitting in my home office hard at work when I hear my name being called - my friend showed up with a "new" model a transmission in hand - and against everything I stand for, he singlehandedly ripped out the old broken transmission and installed a "fresh" one

Well, almost...

a lovely view of the very nice flywheel we just installed a few months ago.

so here you can see just the tip of the ice berg

a few chipped teeth on the bigger gear, but the real damage is here

This gear cluster was literally forcing its way out of the blown apart case - I had to get the hammer to punch it all back in - if you look further down inside, you can see what really let go.

the real money shot is this

It's really amazing that this thing held together - maybe a few more RPM's on that dump may have completely blown it apart.

Anyhow - the new transmission is already in - it was a "good used" unit and the shifting already feels lightyears ahead of what I had - each gear clicks in with a very satisfying sound - I have to get it some 600w oil which is really hard to find these days - but there are a few sellers that have it. 600w is known as "liquid syncros" - We got the thing 90% of the way there, but I need some new U bolts and we have to detach the rear one more time because we didn't have a collar clocked the right way. - we do that, make sure the brakes are good, filler up and we're back in business.

Another model a transmission really was my last choice, hell, I have a T5, lasalle side shift and a v8-60 transmission here at the house, but each has their own set of challenges. I think I may have mentioned it, but I have another frame - My plan is to set it up with the quick change and the T5 - funny enough the mini v8-60 and the banger are interchangeable... Im a complete idiot and cant say no, so I have 2 more bangers AND a nailhead coming to me.

Speaking of nailheads...

I've pretty much been driving this thing daily while my 48 is getting some upgrades (stay tuned for that)

one of my favorite places on earth is closing

we took the opportunity to send it out with a little car cruise -

Its super upsetting, owner retired - but there are rumors that another vintage stand type restaurant will take it over, which is good. worst case is that it gets bulldozed.

cheers!

Glass-bottle milk / flavored milk is the best.

Broguieres has been pretty much the only glass bottle milk available in SoCal... nearly my whole life, it is by far the best in every way - Growing up there was always a bottle of this on hand, in my mom's words "it just tastes better" - Some residents see it a bit extravagant because of the cost, but what most fail to see is that if you return the bottle, you get a huge chunk of money back, making it equally as priced, and just beyond the best quality. Their chocolate milk may as well be a milk shake and is the best I've ever had. Its a real cult thing, I've seen these bottles in the homes of the extremely wealthy and just normal people alike. I grew up on it, and my son is too. A few years back there was literally a milk man service that I subscribed to for a good few years that supplied this milk and other fresh top shelf dairy stuff. Of course I'd be having a milk man... Sadly, my home was on the outskirts of his serviceable route and he had to drop me. I loved it, every bit of it. gave me a serious domesticated history/good times happy feeling boner.

along those same lines...

Growing up in southern California in the 80s and 90s, Huell Howser and his show "Californias Gold" was a staple on nearly every TV. He delved deep in to the history of California and his shows were probably my absolute favorite. They would play 4/5 episodes and the latest one every night on PBS - We lost Huell in 2013, but he left a VAST amount of shows - including one about this dairy. More on Huell: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huell_Howser

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3kjRUKBtV4

A number of years ago, the owner said he wanted to go out of business, there was literally a parade of fans from all over LA, including me, who went to the dairy and gave words of encouragement to keep going or pass the torch - the outcry was so big that he decided to keep it up. When I went there was maybe about 10-15 people there, and we were all telling stories, there wasn't a dry eye in the place - the owner talking about history, the cars we had brought, and just how weird things had gotten.

This eggnog is thick as elmers glue, and the secrets are ages old. It's in very very high demand and you can go to several markets to find it.

The baseball card collection triggers a memory that, somewhere in my Mom's house (now my sister's house, but with all of the junque still in the attic) is the Coin Collection.

My Mom went on & on about the family heirloom Coin Collection since time out of mind. It was really my father's; he started collecting coins as a child in the late 1930s, and had a subscription to the US Mint for proof sets, collecting them for 20-30-years. The whole thing was crammed into an old leather suitcase and hidden, Purloined Letter-style, amongst all of the other luggage in the attic, after they divorced in the early 80s.

Over the last 30-years of her life, my mom moved it around the house, and got it appraised ($8000 sometime in the '80s). I would come across it now & then up in the attic (sometimes behind the kneewalls), but have not seen it since the 1990s (married in 1990, and soon after, in my own house).

My mom died in March of '22 and I am the executor of her estate, which we're about to close out; so my mind turns to the fact that nobody has been able to find it. It should not have been that hard to locate a big suitcase in a small Cape Cod, but it has thus far eluded me & my sister (who, to be fair, is not very organized & not a diligent follower-through, whereas I would spend as long as it took to find it, Terminator-style, were I there long enough).

I'll be up there early in the new year, divvying up the blown glass Christmas ornament collection; some of these were acquired by my great- grandmother in Germany, where she was born & lived as a child, in the 1880s. Hopefully will have time to continue the search.

These cards and the autograph collection were almost lost too - When my mom moved out of my childhood house in 2010, these were packed deep in a box that had been up high in my garage essentially my whole life - when my dad and her split, this was a box that was left behind - when she moved, she didn't hire a mover because buying her son and his friends pizza+beer was cheaper - this particular box was left outside for a few days - I specifically remember INSTALLING SPRINKLERS and looking at this box saying - hey I need to move this, I moved it in the garage then when I was done, I came in and discovered... the items that are jaw dropping... it became white glove time.

I hope you find them - also wanting to see these hand blown ornaments too..

Anyway - I'm all twisted up over that stuff, but it will wait until after the bowl!

Woah- wanna talk about luck...

Last friday I was coming home from cruise night, late like midnight - I had been crusing the freeway for at least 6-7 miles, waiting for the light at the offramp, I hit the gas and heard "DING" -

the top bell of my ultra rare "bermuda bell" fell off, I whipped a bitch and flipped around and got it a SECOND before a pickup almost flattened it.

Anyway, this ultra weird bolt that holds the bell on came loose, dropped the nut

so if you dont know what this is, its a spring loaded bell that makes a distinct DING DONG sound - its bolted to the floor of the car and you use your foot to actuate it.

anyway, its all fixed up, the nut is loctited on there and its not going back in the buick - mostly because it goes in a place thats really hard to get to, I wanna put it on the model a so its a bit easier to get to.

Speaking of luck...

A friend came down from the bay area and brought a free gift - a 48 buick transmission,.. hey its the same one that I just had rebuilt, and it was a runner!- oh wait, I needed parts for mine to stop the leak!

my plan is to swap the somewhat bad parts out of mine in to this one and keep it a runner and keep it with the car so that if this one ever fails, I dont have to do a rebuild. with the way things are now, I don't think I'd ever be able to find someone to rebuild a dynaflow at a reasonable price.

after the rains, came outside and see this..

its back! we finished up the transmission install last friday - good news is that it runs - bad news is that this transmission is loud... very loud. I gotta get some thicker stuff for it, the original type of gear oil for these cars was called 600 weight - try googling that and you'll find LOTS of different ideas about what 600 actually is. Old timers tell us that they used to be able to find 600w at auto parts store, and when they did, they would buy it all up because it was considered "liquid syncros" - Mac's auto parts apparently makes a version of it, from some comments it may actually be a blend of heavy gear oil and lucas oil stabilizer aka motor honey... Model a transmissions arent really anything special, straight cut gears, no syncros, dogleg'd - so it makes sense these would take some heavy stuff.

When we were filling up the transmission, I thought I may go check the rear end, it was very low... so maybe dodged that bullet?

this transmission isn't forever, but I hope to get a few seasons out of it, so we'll see.

in other news, I'm so drat busy with work, I dont have time for much fun.. so we'll see!

Garfeield over here really isnt mine because the elderly dog creature that inhabits my home doesn't like him, I hear them yelling at eachother often.

My wife has taken the approach to throw food scraps out for the squirrels who themselves have also adopted us. they're friendlier than the orange cat, whom I believe is named Huckleberry (only because I hear someone yelling "HUCKLEBERRY" nightly when its time to come in) - anyway, the squirrels dont even pay us mind anymore, they're only a few steps away from coming in the house too.

If I understand it right, the bell mounts under the car and the plunger to ring it is like an old school floor mounted headlight switch?

The idea is that it's like a 'polite horn' for pedestrians?

exactly! - I also use mine to announce my arrival.

and here's the front of it - you can see the locktite holding the front bell on

I glooped it on there and down in the threads, I know it doesn't do much to hold it on when its not actually interlocked with the threads, but I can safely say that its down in there too.

Speaking of noisemakers in my stash I have one of the horns mentioned in this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZegcXOZ0jo

it looks like this:

When I first got it many years ago I was able to make it somewhat work, but its a real mechanical mystery - the bottom part is just a electrical motor, almost as big and heavy as a starter motor that turns a little thing that looks like a rotor to hit the individual notes, the contacts are all clean and I got it to make a revolution but the horns themselves didn't sound, its also pretty cool because it has its own...limiter... i guess in that when you give it the beans it only makes one revolution and stops, kinda complex stuff going on in there - only trouble is that its a 6v.. Also somewhere I have an original instruction book with a troubleshooting guide that I need to look at -

I don't think I've ever heard a flathead that rowdy. I'm assuming "AV8" means an Ardun OHV headed flatty.

edit: or V8 from a Model A?

Apparently. Same car, and it's still a flathead:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcBJesTuT7Y

AV8 typically means a model a with a V8- Model A went from 28-30 and never featured a v8, only the 4 banger, in 32 that all changed with the 21 stud flathead v8 - the 32 aka deuce was the more popular car, because in addition to the v8, they were slightly larger they had beautiful sculpted frames and they rode much better - the model a is pretty much the bridge gap between the model t and the more civilized cars - the 32 was the pinnacle of that.. I guess.

the car in the video is a local car, seen it around for years! the 2nd vid of it all painted up shows it with some pretty cool aftermarket heads, but not Arduns, the heads he's got on there are pretty rad Eddie Meyer dual plug heads, meaning you have to run a 16 point distributor ... Arduns are an overhead conversion to the flathead v8 - like my Miller, but instead of 1 head, you got 2, that added a lot of power to these little v8's - IIRC they were never used originally for racing applications but they were meant to be a power adder for big trucks and work vehicles and also IIRC, they only ever made a handful of the, so most every set you see out there these days is a repro, there was also a guy out there making fugazi ardun heads that literally were just for show with no internals

Re: rowdyness - flatheads can get pretty angry with a cam, a huge alure of them has always been the sound.

Audio guys!

I had a dream that I had an echo unit in my car and now I really want to do it but I don't know how!

I found these:

https://www.google.com/search?sca_e...208982822620315

and I have one in my CB radio - I love the delay and echo..

question is, can I use one of these.. or a variant of that, to capture the audio coming out of my little wacky bluetooth amp...

https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Am...ps%2C157&sr=8-4

to have an echo unit on a pot that I can roll up or down

just to play this song

and melt in to my seat.

I had a really long response to both of these comments in the chamber and I clicked off accidentally and lost it all, to paraphrase:

I really do wish I could understand audio, I've tried for a long time but it always vexes me - always like my brain is full and I just cant add any more knowledge to it. Vintage audio is even more black magic to me - the radios, jukeboxes and all other vintage audio stuff I have, I really lean on 2 guys I've met over the years that are experts at it. testing vac tubes, resistors and capactiors - I understand the testing processes, somewhat know how to read schematics and wiring diagrams, but I just cant put it all together, and I've really tried - its just vexing and I thank you both for your responses

the link that gives the history: again, theres a ton of info there that I can process but in regards to how it interfaces with the existing radio - I cant put it together.

There's a guy that I've been trying to find again that remakes these 60s and 70s era light bars - funny enough walmart seems to sell them... https://www.walmart.com/ip/Colorbar...ucks/1857749730 but his are of a way higher quality and more true to the originals - anyway, I used to see him at the swapmeets, and he's friends with a mutal friend, but I havent got to a swap in a long time and that friend doesn't have his contact - he made a reverb unit that was very compact and straight forward, when I saw it, it was just a little metal project box with a switch, a jeweled indicator light and a pot - painted in hammertone blue with a little metalic sticker that just said "reverb" - he sold them for original radios and these goofy aftermarket radios like this:

https://www.classiccarstereos.com/1954-1956-buick-roadmaster-radio-with-bluetooth-usa-740.html

About these radios - I've never paid any mind to them because for the applications they need, they look trashy and cheap - but there are some of these radios for more popular cars that do look factory - a buddy of mine bought one and it had some trick poo poo, it did the job, barely - the quality of it was pretty much on-par with my $10 amp board, he had spent a pretty penny on nice speakers and a woofer/amp combo and the sound coming out if it was honestly bad, it wound up getting broken at some point, and we pulled it apart to take a look at its guts, and basically it was a collection of off the shelf boards (that looked like my $10 unit) that were just kinda patched together - he wound up getting rid of that and just buying a nice modern head unit and shoving it in the glovebox - he put the original radio back in the holes and he runs it like that now - its in a 70 chevy truck, so its not some art deco chrome plated masterpiece, so he doesn't care, but I do.. which is why I'm doing this the hard way

Anyway, this guy making these units has eluded me, but he may or may not be the key... but I also have you guys sooooooooo...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/404392249897

this thing.. if I'm understanding?

can I de-solder the pots and wire 1 in to both boards?

ah, i had forgotten that your existing receiver was a bluetooth receiver + amplifier all in one. in that case, the thing i suggested won't work, since it is expecting the audio signal to be the low voltage before the amplifier. i was thinking you had a bluetooth receiver, and that was plugged into an amplifier, and we would insert reverb between the two.

since that's not the case, i will have to think of a better way to do this. is this the same unit you're using already? https://www.ebay.com/itm/175366460293

as for the pot, yes i was imagining that we could just use one knob. it's safest to not connect one pot to both boards, since they'll both have their own power supplies in there and they might forcefully disagree with one another, but you can get pots that have two separate windings in them. i think they're usually called stereo pots, actually. even better if we could find one that has the switch built in, so you can just twist fully counter clockwise and it clicks off.

anyway, that's neither here nor there, since my initial proposal is bust.

this is the exact unit I've been using

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081ZZ1KX2?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

in regards to the pots, I'd almost prefer a switch to activate - if I did make this happen I'd most likely try to find some old wacky bakelite knob and a old timey switch, all within some kind of vintage box or under dash unit or something like that.

I'm getting weird with the reverb stuff - I basically found all the chips that make up that little unit I have - a bluetooth receiver unit, a echo board (the one from the CB) and an amp - basically creating more - I was getting way too deep in to the chinese crap... even delving in to the temu world

so much so that me and da bois spent most of cruise night talking about temu

look at this junk - all of this crap for 30 bucks...

the winner of the junk roulette...

either way, the whole order was to get another $8 amp like the other ones I have in my cars already - I wanted a test unit and got lured by the rest of this crap.

surprise runner up is this crazy LED photo light that has full RGB settings and "effects" - dont have a pic of the actual unit but I used it to take these pics in silly colors..

Speaking of colors...

We had some rain a few weeks ago, and yay! roof leak! - it really made me sick because I had some damage, specifically to my 1937 Firestone console radio and a very very special painting from my moms collection.

the leak in the roof was directly over the radio and it splashed up on to the painting - there was really bad water spots and they looked like the painting was completely ruined. My wife was super upset because my late mom gave it to us before she passed - the painter was pretty well known and this particular one was done in the late 30s a few years before his passing in 1940.

I didn't take any photos of it in its damaged state, I could hardly look at it.. it really did make me sick to my stomach - my mom would always say "if the house is on fire, grab grandpas scrap book and the bullfighter painting"

last weekend I was having a "dadurday" and I was knocking around with lobsterboy II -

after that we stopped in to one of my favorite art stores that itself is a relic from the 40s, its an amazing store

https://www.cartersexton.com/

and they have possibly one of the best neon signs in LA.

I off the cuff mentioned to the gals behind the counter that I had an old painting that got damaged in the rain - they suggested I call "Sunny"

So I get in touch with her and she has me come over to her home - Holy crap... amazing woman - 87 years old, restoring fine art - with degrees in sound engineering and art restoration, she was happy to show me photos of her restoring fuckin hieroglyphics in Egypt in the late 50s, her work at the Abbey Road studios... list goes on. She was sharp as a tack and really engauging. She took me to her studio and took my painting. She went to her shelf and pulled out a merky gray/green solution, when she opened the jar, the smell was overwhelming. With her bare finger she gently dabbed some of this stuff on there and with a linen rag she wiped the damage right off, she'd wipe a bit, and look at the cloth to make sure nothing was coming off, she did that over and over again and the transformation was in-loving-credible.

She told me to leave the painting with her for a few days for it to "develop" - she said "it will look even better in a few days"

so I did - and holy poo poo did it ever look better

this was it shortly after she put her magic mix on it -

here it is now with moody 9pm lighting - not a very accurate representation of it, but you can see the changes in the painting.

Overall - it looks like the difference from 1080p to 4k - when she first put her mix on there, it looked bright and shiny I was a bit nervous because it looked almost too good and too new - took the vintage patina off - but when i saw it again after it had "developed" - it looked right - her explanation to this was that it was like wiping something with a solvent - she explained it like cleaning class with windex - you can see the glossy clean after the initial wipe off and the streaks dissapear quickly - she said that the "streaks" in relation to the damage on my painting will disapear over a day or 2 - the most shocking transformation is on his chest and clothes - she did not touch the painting up, and theres some science behind it, but when pigments mix over time sometimes different compounds will overwhelm others - as in the chest, her magic mix shocks those pigments back to life. Super incredible - she kept saying "you can get similar results with a $14 bottle of painting cleaner" but she had tweaked the mixtures in to shocking old faded colors out of remission . Her cost for this service - less than 100 bucks. I had an amazing time with her, such a special woman.

Back to cars!

The other night I was coming home I hit the freeway with a friend and the car started acting a bit weird more wobbly and loose than I'd like - I even caught a hint of a death wobble, like something was loose, brakes feeling a bit more squishy too - I've had a re-lined set of brake shoes on my bench fo the past year - I love Buicks because the same shoes that fit my 48 also fit my 54, so it was just a matter of which car was going to be up to bat first.

so the 48 got the following services

fill shocks with new fluid, namely power steering stop leak - I'll do a more in-depth write up on the horrors of buick shocks soon if anyone gives a hoot.. (I have to service the rears pretty soon here)
top off all fluids

and front brake service

this is before, and I didn't take any afters because i hate touching my phone with dirty hands.

So I got it all back together and decided to clean the tires

oh... cool...

these were bought new in July of 22.

oh cool, a bulge too..

rant posted:

So, when I first got in to this game in the early 2000's - bias ply tires for vintage cars cost $50 for a "blem" and $80 a good tire - the bigger ones like this were $90 - because they were antiquated tech and easier to build than modern performance radials - Coker was in its infancy and there were several stores that all carried different brands of vintage bias ply tires. now I'm no economics guy, but these kind of tires and lead acid car batteries haven't changed much... have they? at the risk of sounding like a grizzled younger old car guy - The tires of these days seemed to last forever - so much so by the time it was time to replace them, somehow magically it had become 12 years later... and the reason you replaced them is because the tread was worn off, not compromised sidewalls or cracking/seperating...

the price of these tires is well over 300 bucks now - is that inflation? the quality of them is worse and they're now 3x the cost for a tire that is the 100% antithesis of performance.

It was explained to me that all these tires are made in 1 factory on the east coast- they do not sell direct to consumer but companies like coker - they own all the molds of the old tires and these companies can order a specific tire - different stores order different makes, for instance, theres a shop in the south that sells all the vintage goodyear tires - another company ordered sears allstate tires - all of them seem to order these firestones..

I've heard stories, seen photos and witnessed first hand how the quality of these vintage bias plys has suffered over the past 2 decades yet the price is higher than ever before.

Granted the market for these kinds of tires is small, and I get it - but why gently caress us, loyal customers, with crappy quality - ok, we'll normalize 300 bucks for a tire that lasts.

Anyway, I have an email in to to the shop I got them from in 22 - we'll see what happens -

oh cool looks like my taillight lens is melting too!

until next time!

Funny aside on odds and betting -

In the past I usually would wait until halftime and make my way back to the hotel to avoid the madness, this year having just come off a overnight load in, I made it to the stadium to catch my yearly flyover and eat some food then stumble to the shuttle to get home.

https://i.imgur.com/W5E6f7h.mp4

as soon as I got back to the hotel, off came the pants and in to bed I got, I took a HARD power nap and woke up to my boss and some other colleagues blowing up my phone to come down, imbibe and then have a nice steak dinner - aka the "senior mens celebratory dinner"

The hotel we were in was where the Chiefs friends and family was staying, in essence the official hotel of the Chiefs - everywhere was booked up so we snuck to a little cafe right off the casino, I showed up with like 5 mins left in the 4th and there were some guys in front of us who were diehards, it also quickly became obvious that one of these guys had some money on the game, and stood to make a considerable sum if the chiefs won. My tech director started talking him up and the guy started to become more comfy with us, even joking around - he knew we were involved somehow so he gentily asked about that and when we told him he became even more comfy - so in the last few minutes plus the OT he was getting more and more agitated, every play he was standing up and holding his head - with a few minutes left, he proclaimed "TOP SHELF poo poo FOR MY BOYS IF THE CHIEFS WIN" - he pointed to our table and 2 random hotties at the bar. One thing leads to the other and he gets his wish, he starts jumping up and down and going nuts, he comes back over to our table and goes to give the TD a roundhouse high five and the GIANT gold pinky ring he was wearing flies off his finger, whizzes past my head, and 3 or 4 other tables and "tink tink tink's" off in to the busy casino, which itself is going nuts. the entire restaurant stopped, then collectively burst out laughing as he scrambled out the door and in to the casino - literally 3-5 minutes of off the wall laughing from this whole restaurant - I was laughing so hard I was crying and if my body didn't hurt so bad I probably would have fallen out of the chair. as quickly as he burst out, he bursts back in and holds the ring high over his head and lets out a primal scream, which made everyone laugh even harder - he pointed to our table and the hotties and said "ON THE loving HOUSE" - so before we know it we all had doubles of 1942 sitting in front of us.

Obviously I dont care about sports, but for a brief moment I was a fan for this guy - even typing this out I'm still laughing about it.

game day was pretty hectic - I made it to the stadium just in time to see lil' Billy

like all old rockers, he now talks too much and has more political opinions that never come off quite strong. nice day for a white wedding indeed.

The monday after the super bowl is always weird - they want us to "work" but literally no one does, in the past its just a "show face" kinda thing to make sure that you didn't get too wasted or lost the night before - me and another gal got released by the big man because we did the overnight previously - so she asked me if there was anything I really needed to see, this girl reminds me heavily of my wife in her attitude, so I used the classic "what do you want to see" line and her first idea was the Punk Rock Museum

This place was pretty cool - It was opened by Fat Mike and a few others about a year ago - the idea is that you get a tour from an old punk that was actually there - our tour guide was in a ton of bands from the early 80s onward, at nearly 50 years old, this guy was legt

pretty cool stuff in there

So theres more - about a week before I left, I got another job - which is incredible and I start the week after next, so this week is going to be spent doing all the stuff I need to do before settling in to a very different position than I'm used to - the great part about this new job is that it is completely a different speed, and it is somehow related to what I did - so much so that in some conversations with the CEO, he downright encouraged me to take other freelance roles including the super bowl. - I need to start the job to make sure its actually real and I'm not just dreaming - this position is 100% remote...

also a few weeks before I left - I caught wind that someone had made a painting of me!

So I bought it!

A day before I came back I got a few calls from a friend of mine that owed me something- he's completely crazy and has no sense of time. long story short, he came over to my house and dropped me off 2 model a engines...

https://i.imgur.com/spPplXg.mp4

my wife was less than thrilled about this.

but the other one was totally worth the price of admission

its a diamond block - meaning it was a replacment engine that was manufactured later.. these castings are typically thicker and sometimes even contained balanced cranks - fingers crossed thats the case.

see the small diamond above the edge of the timing cover?

this one has some oddball speed stuff on it

note the odd water pump block off plate and the wide set motor mounts - this was most likely in a 32+ car

the water pump block off is actually to run a higher efficiency v8 water pump - pretty cool if you ask me - this means more aluminum stuff to polish

This haul came with a ton more stuff including 4 transmissions and bellhousings - I'm probably going to assemble another screamer motor pretty soon here using this block - I want to move slow and do every last stinking detail on this engine, and just have this beautiful thing sitting there on the stand waiting to go in.

in sad news

A friends grandfather passed away, he was a early car customizer and was very well known in the scene for a long time, this was his final ride

in other news, I'm really happy to be home, I have a few housekeeping things to do for the new job, but next week I plan on spending most of my time getting in to mischief I normally couldnt becuase of work!

Stay tuned.

That it hasn't dissolved into a pile of rust chips by now - doubly amazing since this is a '57 Plymouth Belvedere - I'm assuming that the late prior owner kept it in a heated garage for most of its life.

There is very little rust on the exterior, and the original interior is disturbingly intact and unmolested. I have yet to crawl under it - there was no one home; I left a card - it just seemed weird to do that without talking to the owner, who had some interesting decor (check the door knocker).

Aside from the "V" call-outs on the front fenders, I don't know if it's equipped with on the the three V8s available in 1957, or the flathead six (which would be awesome)

that thing needs to be liberated! Those cars are sooooo hard to find in good shape which this one looks to be in - most of them rusted away long ago - IIRC Belvederes were like the top of the line car, so most likely it would have had the v8 - most people think fury was the top of the line, but, again IIRC, the fury was like the sport model - small body, big engine.

My FIL had a 59 Plymouth suburban 2d wagon for years - it had the flathead 6, 3 on the tree.

ahhhh nothing like a rainy day drive with a "sealed and good to go" transmission

I had people hanging out the window to take a picture of this car in the rain, the wipers have never worked and if they did, they probably wouldn't do much. so we just kept going.

This morning, I needed to run some errands, I pulled the car out and went to go retrieve the trashcans, and when I was walking back towards the car I saw a nice little oil slick under it

https://i.imgur.com/zvFxSye.mp4

ahhh... yes... so this will be the 3rd time the car goes back to the transmission shop for leaks - this guy is on my last nerve, and I've been so patient...

byeeeeee

https://i.imgur.com/F19PXJt.mp4

he said "bring it back" and I finally broke and said "you know, I've spent no less than 20 hours dealing with this over nearly a year" I brought the car there last april... "oh I can come get it, I'll drive it back" - you know what... no, send a goddamn tow truck, because not only do they have to drain the coolant out of it to get the transmission out, but they put straight water in it, thus flushing down 2 bottles of water wetter - I'm still patient with these guys, but I'm wearing really fuckin thin.

So next time, I'm going to pick it up, give it a hard drive up the canyon there, check it and if it does it again, drop it right back off.

Is there anybody else that can do that kind of work? That's incredibly frustrating to bring it back for a third time and I would never trust it especially if the guy doesn't even verify his own work. It's a shame because that's a beautiful car.

There are only a handful of people that will do it - but the key is, the money is already spent and I flat out refuse to pay $0.01 more for this transmission to be right. I'm not going to be so nice for much longer.

ok, so if its the front seal, hes an idiot, its not that hard to put it in - if its the torque converter - first off, if it was leaking, then I gave him one that was in better shape.. he did use parts from it because the other transmission was taken apart when I got there the last time - secondly, I feel like if that was leaking, I feel like a leak this heavy would be enough to have the car not move or be low on power, both of which is not true, the car has more power than its ever had.

moreso, they do stuff without telling me - they drained the cooling system because its connected to the transmission (thanks buick) - they broke an exhaust flange, it just needs to be re-welded, no big deal - the last time I picked it up the fan was all tweaked out like it hit something... little stuff I wouldn't care about if it was fixed...

EDIT: So a friend of mine has a bigger shop and has the same love of these big boats as I do - He's got a few oddball transmissions, as do I, so I think we're going to spend some time soon and get in to these things, read the book, learn the language and learn to do them ourselves - the lovely part is the tips and tricks that the old timers had that is not in the books, stuff like bend this slightly, or tweak this slightly, or put a smear of grease here - that kind of stuff - these aren't rocket science, and compared to modern stuff, they are dinosaurs.

weird...

speaking of lights - I went out last week for a night time run to a buddys place and between the LA rain and the dark nights... I realized I couldn't see poo poo out of my lexus

Headed to the parts store and picked up a new set of wipers and a full set of SilverStar Ultras

Someone along the line put bottom barrel bulbs in this thing, the corner lights were cool blue LED, the brights were some mad tyte tuner blue 9005's and the main headlights were just super dim

so here's the after

I couldn't help myself and picked up some Hella ultra yellows for the fogs. Obviously not LED good, but probably the best OE setup I could think of at least - I didn't take any before shots but this is night and day  different.

on sunday I went to the cars and coffee and for some reason got spotted and photo'd quite a bit

theres more, but you get the gist

back to the old garage

I've been pretty wrapped up in staring this new gig, so not a lot of work, but I'm trying to do SOMETHING every day out there

so I pulled off these rare parts from the new block I got...

a buddy of mine has access to a 3d scanner, he loves bangers so when I sent him these pics, I got a "I'm coming over" text

So last night I was just chillin in my library, sitting there minding my own business when I get tagged in a pretty fun post

So this is the 4th mystery motor I've ripped in to - the last one was a hit so I guess I now have a problem in that I'm now chasing the jackpot of opening one of these up to find some trick poo poo.

My buddy came over and bought some of this banger junk including the other complete motor that was sitting on my front porch - he bought another block and took one of the vintage stands with him to copy, as he's a woodworker, in addition to that he helped me muscle this one up on to a stand

I started with the wire wheel, cleaned it up pretty good, I pulled the oil tube, looks pretty clean inside, older oil... no real contamination.

So I was pretty excited because this thing is a diamond block... whats that? well its this little mark here:

oh whats that? you dont see it? well its the little diamond in the casting

why is that important?

https://www.fordgarage.com/pages/diamondblock.htm

quote:

Beginning in August 1932, complete Model A service block engines were all fitted at the Rouge with Model B camshafts and push rods (tappets), according to the Engine Production Foreman's records. This feature carried forward into diamond block production.

Another unique feature of many later diamond blocks is the presence of factory installed hardened steel valve seats on the exhaust valves.

Oh HELL YES!

oh... man this is pretty caked up

um those ridges are pretty deep

shes a bit pitty.

man, these pistons say .100 on them...

https://i.imgur.com/YewawqS.mp4

Soooo yeah. this thing is pretty worn in, and its already 100 over. They can go to 125 safely but.. sometimes they develop heating issues, but this is an diamond block... theyre thicker and yes, I know the pistons are supposed to be somewhat loose like this, but this is a bit too excessive for me. There's not too much twist so there's a possibility the bottom end may be ok - and if it is.... maybe I'll build it and send it, or build it and put a big flywheel on it to power something in my back yard.

I used the "phone a friend" option to call my 85 y/o friend Ray who said "nah I dont want it." but when he told me about a nice fresh rebuilt engine he has at his house for a reasonable price.. he said he may consider taking this one in trade for some bucks off - I didn't mention ray had a heart monitor installed on him a few days ago and he was "really pissed that doc said I can't lift anything over 10 pounds" "what the hell does he know" - Ray is a national treasure and most of our conversations are spent laughing with each other. The last time I talked to him he said something that was so funny and off color that I just burst out laughing, I dont even remember what the joke was, but in turn, that made him laugh and we spent the next, no poo poo, 10 minutues laughing with each other. I hate that I didn;t get more time with guys like Ray and my late friend Frank - I get pissed that their kids don't value their work, I get pissed that at nearly 40 myself, these guys have been here all along. Talking to them takes me to a better timeline, the timeline without Biff's casino, but when I hang up, or leave these guys places I come back to the Biff timeline.

anyway, I went to an antique swap and met a dude whos dad passed and he was selling lots of cool stuff - I wont see him for another few weeks but i really need to - I wound up buying this $200 accessory NOS fog light for $10.. cant go wrong with that..

speaking of big - last week I went out to dinner and this silly rear end truck parked next to me, the smallest guy at the restaurant was driving it.

Oh aircraft office chairs?

Here's mine

The cool thing about mine is that the frame and legs are magnesium, and its shockingly light - I got this from a garage sale and it was quite broken - I had a guy weld on the ring to retain the legs but my choice of 1/4" rod was a bit too small, and I just used the wheels that came with it that really were not quality, so I very quckly broke one of the flanges that he welded on - I have to re-do it but its not super high on my to-do list

Most likely not a p-38 seat - seats like that were usually in larger planes for radio operators or non pilot positions - I know there were plenty of seats that looked like that that could be put in as aux passenger seating in to larger cargo planes. That price is more than a bit cheeky considering it just has some office depot special swivel base on it. also, I don't think theres too many folks who'd really want to strap themselves in to their office chair - those belts have a fair bit of value not attached to the chair - no where near 2500 bucks worth of value.

I got a cryptic text from a friend earlier today with this photo...

turns out he was at Jay's today and passed him a tee from our drags - I designed this shirt - so Jay now has a real LBX original which is pretty cool - there will be more about Jay soon, stay tuned.

I opened up this distributor and I have to say this thing is clean as can be

so a bit more investigation...

https://pertronixbrands.com/products/pertronix-2541-ignitor-autolite-4-cyl

I mean... I think thats a fit.. I'm going to give pertronix a call tomorrow and see what thats all about -

a facebook memory came up and showed me my old "goldarado"

I really do miss this car - I often refer to it as the best worst car I've ever owned - I sold it in 2013 and I think I had it since 2004-5ish

I released this on etsy:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/170412...e_1&frs=1&crt=1

so in further news, a job opportunity came up for me and I decided to part ways with the company I just started with, it wasn't a good fit for me anyway, so sayonara - time to take a bit of time off then start another job thats more my speed in a week or two, that opens me up to do some other fun things - including a very special (non job related) meeting I'm having next wed -

in the meantime its time to address why this thing isn't charging... especially with a $400 alternator that looks like a generator

On Feb 27, 1997 I was home sick from school, I can't recall if I was actually sick or if I was just faking it to get out of going to school- back in those prehistoric days we had tv and no internet. I was on the couch watching tv and a special bulletin popped up talking about some bank robbers, a few miles from my house, shooting the everloving gently caress out of everything.. I quckly realized I had heard a lot of sirens and helicopters shortly before that.. scenes of the movie Heat were dancing in my head, and come to think of it - that could be a "meme" within itself - So many people my age remember seeing movies like "Heat" when they were most likely way too young to see stuff like that- die hard, true lies (boobs) and pretty much any Arnold movie.. anyway, I was glued to the TV

Anyway a few hours later my father came home wild eyed and super hyped (he wasn't the best guy and was most likely blasted on coke) and explained to my mom that he was at the gun shop when all of a sudden the cops busted in and basically cleared the shelves and that there was some serious poo poo going down - by that time the coverage of it had ended and I was probably watching something else - he came in and took the remote and turned back to the coverage of it

My dad was a gun collector, he was kinda bonkers and he took any opportunity when my mom wasn't around to ease me in to the idea of guns - of all his shortcomings, responsible gun ownership was not one of them. He was very responsible with them, how he dealt with them and even kept everything extremely and shockingly legal - it was probably the only thing that he kept legal.

Anyway, he had taken me to this particular shop a few times, my mom hated me going to places like that with him - all the while I was rather indifferent to it - I also was extremely bored when I'd go to that shop with my dad. only a few short years later, the shop would be gone, dad would be gone and so would my care in firearms - I still have a few, but mostly (duh) historical stuff. It's all locked up and now that I'm a dad, I see absolutely no reason to expose my son to it ANY time soon.

Only a few years after that, it was all gone, my dad, the shop, the memories..

Anyway a few years ago I was at a car show and I saw an old lady poking around and her sweater unlocked deep, long forgotten memories. I asked her politely if I could take a picture.

so I copied it

I did this because I wanted one - I don't think I'm going to sell them - the climate is very off right now.

What do you think?

well, i dont want to spoil things, but if you visit the tail-o-the-pup, Lucky Tiki isnt too far away -

Funny story about TOTP - the pragmatic hot dog has changed hands several times since it was dismantled after its last placment, and at one point it belonged to another friend of mine, I got to see it and examine it very close... what an amazing piece of history..

A less happy ending would be a local place, Phils Diner...

this stood for a long time in north hollywood, when I was a kid, my grandfather and I would go there, have some breakfast and just enjoy an old train car diner, one of 2 left in LA -

when I was in college I met a guy that actually owned the building and had been paying storage to keep it in a vacant lot for near 20 years - he finally got the chance to place it, and the place he chose for it was very much not right...

Long story short, it was a flop, bad location, too much money spent - its changed hands a few times, the original sign was stolen, and now it exists as a husk

https://www.google.com/maps/@34.165...i8192?entry=ttu

the place that occupies it now is pretty good, but they dont pay much mind to the history of this fantastic little dining car - guess I cant be too critical because the building still exists...

down the street you can visit this amazing place..

well today was the day.. I stayed out late last night like a dummy and got a bit of a late start.

https://i.imgur.com/R6aHnI2.mp4

After what I feel was a REALLY hair raising drive on the freeway at 7a, I got off and crossed the famous "Suicide Bridge" which is a staple of Pasadena.

this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KscbD_hYQbA&t=261s

I was WAY too jazzed to be taking pics, but there were a really amazing assortment of cars there, from really nicely done privateers to actual historic cars -

This run was started in 1947 and was held "annually" until now - its actually been 14 years since the last one, as most of the members of the Pasadena Roadster club had passed away - as of recently, the club has seen some new, younger guys starting up and they thankfully decided to restart the event, using the same route they did for the very first run, 77 years ago. Literally driving history.

Its not a race, but they do a baseline run following all road rules, and the closest to that "perfect" time gets the trophy.

the route took us up the famous angelest crest highway, one of the premier canyons here in LA - bikers, supercars and all types of crazy stuff up there daily. Including this https://www.autoweek.com/car-life/events/a39543506/new-favorite-destination-event-good-vibes-breakfast-club/, which is a HUGE event that happens on Fridays - how this many people don't have work on a weekday is always astounding to me.

the route took us over the mountain range and in to Acton, just 30-40 miles from the famous El Mirage dry lake bed, which was pretty shocking to me considering I never thought I'd be able to drive my car to elmo

Each driver is given a direction book, a door card, a tee... you can have a co-driver because the instruction book is literally just a "word of mouth" type thing - like "turn left a the 3 way stop" or "make a left at the first light after _________ ave" - stuff intentionally written to foul you up - My buddy O-man called me last night to ask if he could co-drive with me because they guy that he was origianally going to ride with got the flu and had to bow out today. I'm really glad he did come because driving the car was more than a handful, and having another guy to say "it said the 2nd stop sign, right?" was a pretty big sanity check

out of 70 or so cars doing the run, there were 4 banger powered cars doing the run, 2 of them were fiully built racing/touring motors with modern transmissions, 2 of them were trad builds and of those 2, I made it back, the other guy didnt.

I didn't feel like blowing the banger up so me and O-man made more than a few social stops for pictures and gum-flapping

coming down out of the mountains was a joy - I threw it in neutral and let gravity take hold, the engine noise went away, the vibrations stopped and we could have a conversation without screaming - 30 glorious miles of downhill, and the occational biker blasting by at over 100mph

We made it back down the the flats and proceeded to the finish!

notice the building in the background, thats the Norton Simon museum, the backdrop for the Rose Parade - the start/finsh was the historic Elks Lodge, which was too kind to let us come in, put the dawgs up and set a spell - the absoulte best part of this were the several guys that fell asleep in the comfy chairs, it was almost like a sleep clinic for ~40 y/o hot rodders, of which I almost fell victim to.

They had drinks and lunch ready to go, the club came up and talked a bit, handed out the trophies -

I've driven my car this far before, and at a certain point it just becomes unpleasant, factoring in the drive to and from the start point, and the drive itself, its just shy of 120 miles - and the prize for doing this amazing historic run

Driving these cars is obvously different, 120 miles in a regular car is a breeze, but those last 10-15 miles, I kept thinking "gosh this steering is getting tight, why is my clutch pedal so hard to push, my hands are killing me, I hope I dont get a clutch leg cramp" - I realized that this is actually hard, and I'm soft.

With that revelation, seeing old friends and new, and another white knuckle 40-50mph freeway ride to get home, I bid Pasadena farewell and headed home - I needed gas so I put 25 bucks in the tank (shockingly the car gets really good milage) and 2 quarts of oil that leaked out and headed home

First thing I wanted to do was inspect for damage, the rear end noise had grown a bit louder, but other than that, I had no visual damage, no odd sounds, no knocking or klunking - the car did stellar - and I'm super proud of it.

this dude was super happy to see me for some reason and wanted to show me how he drives "his" wagon like a racecar driver

phew... sleep came quickly!

They had 6 aircraft flying that day, our favorite was this silver mustang, followed by the pride of burbank, p38

on our way out I noticed this little gem on an old window

____

This little doober gave us quite a scare, he had a giant mass in his neck about 2 weeks ago, he was very inflamed and there was some less than favorable talk from the vet, but now, 2 weeks later, the mass is all but gone and he has no inflamation.

at 14 years old, our time with him is precious, but for his age, he's really doing well.

I noticed a break leak on the old wagon, and I don't feel like putzing with it right now, so I just used a little cinema light I got from Temu to take this lovely photo

in closing, a friend came over and saw this bike that he just had to have, he made me an offer so I pulled it out and got it a bit juiced up, but it still needs new tires - he wound up backing out of the deal, which I was totally fine with because I didn't want to sell it anyway.
