Wasn't that partly determined to be an issue with the way the interceptor versions were running wiring or something? Or some kind of rubber floor plug not sealing right? Either way, it was only an issue if they sat idling for extended periods of time. Ford's supposedly fixed the issues that caused it.

I haven't seen Sun machine in use in at least 20 years. My very first dedicated mechanic had some Sun stuff, but he worked exclusively on Hondas, and mostly older Hondas at that time. Nothing for points or anything, but definitely some stuff that went PING.... and had thick layers of dust on it.

His son in law was my last solid mechanic (he spun off into his own shop about 15 years ago), and didn't have any Sun stuff. He mostly works on 80s and newer Japanese stuff, with the occasional domestic showing up through his church (he does a fair bit of cost-only work for people at his church). He knows HOW to work on old Hondas (he was a Honda dealer mechanic at one point), but that's about it once you get below ~1985 outside of 60s muscle cars. He'll look it up and he's drat good at what he does, but he does most of the carb stuff by ear. He'd need a bit of time researching if he touched something older than 60s.

I knew Lawry's had a restaurant (there's one in Dallas, though I've never been), knew about the salt (it was a staple in my grandmother's house, my mother's house, and my home as well... plus I kinda work in a grocery store). I remember seeing 80s and early 90s grocery commercials with super generic "beer", "paper towels", "corn", etc labels. The generic of generics. Always just a white package or can, with "BEER", "CORN", "PAPER TOWELS", etc on them.

I kinda wish it'd come back. With paper goods, it sort of has thanks to last year's panic shopping (my store has a bunch of stuff just labeled "toilet paper" and "paper towels" that we're struggling to get rid of below cost, most of it with packaging in Spanish, with English stickers on them).

e: here's an ad from Jewel (I assume the company that later became Jewel-Osco?) for generic dairy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_BZVHjce_Q

e2: my home town has been through a ton of different grocery chains, the only one that has stuck around has been Albertson's (the stores were originally Smith's Alpha-Beta, then Jewel-Osco, then Albertson's) and Big 8 (part of Lowe's Market - no, not that Lowe's). Growing up, we also had Furr's, which bought the local Safeway stores sometime in the late 80s or early 90s. Weird thing is Albertson's has kept almost all of their stores, both new and old - in DFW (where I lived for ~20 years), they closed ALL of their new format stores, and only kept their 60s-70s stores open with very modest remodels - but they also operate as Tom Thumb there, which is considered the most upmarket grocery retailer in the area. Kroger is king for affordability. Going back to my hometown, it's a mindfuck walking into the "modern" (90s) Albertson's - they just don't exist in the rest of the state, AFAIK. They closed the modern ones and kept the old ones everywhere else, AFAIK - the one by my old apt in DFW, for example, the meat counter person had been there since the store opened in 1975. Pretty sure she would have run me through the meat grinder if I mouthed off to her the wrong way. :v:

Where I'm at now, Randall's is literally Tom Thumb with a different sign, but it's also now part of Alberton's (but a different division). It's pretty much HEB or Randall's here, unless you want Whole Foods (they originated here, but really don't have many stores here). We have ONE Aldi that I know of, no Save-A-Lots, no Winco, etc. HEB is pretty reasonably priced, but not for the penny pincher. We have the other high end grocers here like Sprouts, Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, but the mainstream is essentially only HEB.

There was something clean about the basic font and white packaging, though.

You haven't been in a Safeway/Albertsons/Tom Thumb/Randall's recently, have you?

They are incredibly proud of their house brands... price-wise anyway - they're sometimes as expensive as name brands at competing stores. They taste just like Sam's Choice (Walmart's house brand) to me, and HEB's Hill Country Fair. HCF is the almost bottom-barrel HEB house brand.. the only one lower is Economax, where a bag of dog food is 99 cents (I think my store carries two Economax products... dog food and ranch dressing are all I've seen). There's nothing wrong with HCF stuff, it's just your typical store brand stuff. The stuff actually labeled "HEB" is a lot better (on par with name brand, sometimes better thanks to no HFCS), "HEB Select" is the stuff they're really proud of.

If I didn't have my employee discount at HEB, I'd probably be shopping at Aldi if we had one remotely close (there's only one in Austin metro that I know of, and it's in far east Pflugerville), MAYBE Walmart. Miss my Winco and Save-A-Lot :smith:

That LED bulb isn't going to last long at all in there, if you didn't know. LEDs hate enclosed fixtures (heat builds up and kills them). An incandescent is best for that fixture; barring that, a CFL.

I'm no expert, but I'm gonna say you pretty much stole it. They still sell it for $2300 (not identical, but pretty close).

That engraved plate looks late 80s to 90s though (definitely a computer controlled engraving machine), so I'm gonna guess not as old as you think - they've been making that chest in some form or fashion for nearly 100 years. I'm sure Lobsterboyx knows more than I do on the actual box, but that's a pretty generic engravable plate that you used to be able to pick up from thousands of mall kiosks and trophy stores for $5-10. Can't find anything about the cosmetics company - if it existed.

You can still get a replacement key for it.

You can find other parts here (takes a long time to fully load for me)

If you happen to be in MI, I found an obit for someone with that exact name married to a William. :iiam: Makes me wonder if someone gave it to their wife as a gift, with "Sir William Cosmetics" as a tongue-in-cheek joke. It looks incredibly clean, and probably a lot heavier than what a cosmetics rep would be lugging around.

I would suggest a spacer to move the speakers back a little - the cone being up against the metal will not only make them sound crappy, it'll rip the surrounds up. Normally the cone fires outward.

But if you wire the speakers backwards (negative to positive, positive to negative), they SHOULD fire backwards, which should keep the cones from hitting the metal. As long as both speakers are wired the same, you shouldn't notice much difference unless you really crank it up. There's always going to be a little bit of rebound, but the primary direction the cones will be moving will be backwards.

I'd wire it to ignition power, the bluetooth should take a few seconds to connect. You can usually configure your phone as to whether or not it'll resume playback once connected, though that's not always reliable.

As for a box - the bulk is behind the dash, that's usually enough. Doors aren't exactly sealed well, and that's where most speakers wind up. GM and a lot of imports used to just stick little 4" or 4x6" speakers in the dash or at the very bottom of the dash with nothing behind them; you're not going for sound quality here, you just want to hear it, right?

If the Cayenne has external CD changer support, there's almost guaranteed to be something out there that will mimic a CD changer to give you either an aux in or (better) bluetooth streaming audio. Same if it had something like Sirius or XM support.

If it has a 3.5mm aux input (unlikely given the year, but....), there's tons of decent bluetooth adapters. I can personally vouch for this one, but you'll need a USB power supply for it. One of the best sounding adapters I've used.

As far as tire vs brake cylinder, looks like you might be running a touch underinflated.

But I'd definitely try to fix both at the same time. If money is an issue, then the brake cylinder first, but the brake fluid isn't great for tires. I had a brake cylinder pop on my 80 F-150 on my way home from school one day, and managed to get it home between engine braking, what was left of the brakes (dual circuit thankfully) and the parking brake (not... my brightest idea). And of course the master cylinder failed shortly after, since the pedal was going to the floor (and thus, piston going way further in than normal).

There's something way way back in the cobwebs of what little bit of brain I still have that's telling me my kindergarten had those same trikes in the early 80s.

I can't really do thin shirts anymore, but not from living in the past - I just hate people being able to see exactly where my nipples are and how well they judge temperature, even with an undershirt (and I only wear undershirts in the summer or when I know I'm going to be sweating a lot). Good to know everything else, I'll get one ordered.

Sucks about the water heater, but you more than got your money's worth out of the old one. And at least it's outside, where it can't do much damage. We like to shove them into attics here when in SFHs, otherwise somewhere inconvenient in multifamily housing. Mine (also from 1998) is behind the drat washer, with shelving (that I can't even reach without climbing on top of the washer) above it. Apparently I'm in one of two apartments in the entire complex that doesn't have it in its own closet (I'm also in one of two one bedroom apartments with full size w/d hookups, all the others only accommodate stacks, despite being the exact same floorplan otherwise). My last apartment had it in a closet outside... electric.. and we actually do get winters here (sometimes). My electric bill was horrific in the winter unless I dropped the thermostats on it way down to barely doing anything (3000+ kWh/mo for a 1 bedroom apt with electric heat, I kept the heat around 60.. I could see a very obvious difference at the meter if I turned off the WH breaker).

That's been happening in my ~1998 2 story building pretty regularly, along with dishwashers flooding kitchens (when mine finally had the fill valve stick open last week, they found a metric ton of water damage to cabinets and subfloor from it leaking from the pump for years - our 4 year old cabinets are scrap at this point, and I've been reporting water dripping out of it for a couple of years now). Thankfully I'm on top of a garage, and the garage under my laundry room is just used for storage of... uh... judging by what I've seen on the rare occasion my neighbor opens it, a lot of hoarder stuff with a handful of actual stuff that should be kept (you can't even walk in it). I've already placed my PC and UPS on a milk crate for when our water heater finally lets go (it's not if, it's when), since they're all of 6 ft apart.

We have ~rules~ about how garages should be used, but nobody follows them. Including the rule about not parking in front of someone's garage unless it's yours (the garage comes with a driveway parking space)... I'm on 14 tows out of my driveway so far, waiting on the tow truck for #15 for show up. One car was towed 4 times before they finally stopped.. my SO leaves for work at 4:30am, it's drat near impossible to get an uber at that hour.
