I don't think providing new content is anywhere even approaching as bad as literal worthless gambling but I agree that I wish MMOs would keep older content relevant somehow.

Fair enough, I didn't know anything about it before I got the alpha invite. I'm not pre-ordering and will def take a closer look before/if I buy it in 2 months.

i dunno if it;s capturing the first mmo feel. my first mmo was eq but i also played uo and asherons call and the thing was those games were all very different. every mmo now just plays like wow (had to lol at old republic saying it wasn't just gonna be wow when every video made it clear it was gonna be).

I miss asherons call. Unlike any mmo ever. So much freedom.

I talked about this one Reddit because people point that out to be like 'no itll be different and good' but Anthem won't have loot boxes, however it will have a huge focus on grinding, looting things, and content updates will come frequently through paid DLC systems. Each DLC will render previous content obsolete of course.

Instead of paying per hand, you're paying to get access into the casino to play all the slots you want for free, but once you're inside they charge you an entry fee to get into the blackjack area where you play as much as you want for free with a higher win% than the slots and also it features attractive dealers. In 2 months, the poker area will be released and there's a charge to get in there, with a higher chance of winning than black jack and more attractive dealers. And so on and so on.

I feel like you've just framed a fairly standard game design practice that's been happening forever in the most sinister way possible.

I have no strong opinions about Anthem either way, but if I'm actually enjoying a game I don't have a problem paying for new content/progression opportunities for my character every so often. If I'm playing a persistent online, progression based game I WANT them to be continuously adding new stuff to make my numbers go up, and I'd prefer a DLC style of monetization to a F2P or subscription based one. Of course the content has to be good, and the price has to be reasonable, but I don't think there's anything objectionable about the scheme itself.

Is this actually true though? I feel like this was just some speculation that sounded kind of bogus but CoH fans were mad enough, Wildstar was unpopular enough, and it got repeated enough that it was eventually just sort of accepted without any real proof or confirmation.

To be more specific: the tell-alls I've seen have said that the root cause of CoH's shuttering was that NCSoft had actually given Paragon Studios a bundle of money towards the development of a theoretical CoH2, since they valued the IP and thought it could be a good property going forwards. This money was internally diverted to a completely unrelated new project at Paragon. When NCSoft found out, they (perhaps understandably) decided to pull ongoing support for the game and simply use the IP in other projects like Master X Master.

Yeah. the only "proof" for this is that some server component or something was reused for Wildstar. Not even NCCsoft would shutter a successful game to recoup some lovely outdated hardware for another game.

The real reason was that Paragon as a studio was a massive loss for NCSoft, having had 3 or more games funded then scrapped. Plus even if COH was making money, it was still on the decline, with no major shakeup on the way that would bring in new users.

I was thinking Black Temple attunement in TBC was longer than wildstars but at least you could raid before that attunement.

More than ten steps for sure

To be fair, the only real awful bits where getting Kael/Vashj kills and getting rep for heroics. Almost all of the 5man stuff is stuff you're going to do anyways for badges. Also later patches made heroic keys need less rep (just honored I think? which you got from leveling for all of them but TK) and flat out removed some attunments.

Wildstar raid attunment was stupid as poo poo at almost every step because most of it didn't feel like poo poo you'd be doing anyways (world bosses), or you would be doing it but it had some other poo poo attached to it just because it could (getting Silver on every 5man, which would of been more sane if poo poo didn't bug out or the servers didn't crash half the time or Skullcano didn't exist). Also you couldn't start attunment for a full week after hitting 50 because you could only get 140 badges a week, and these badges you could use to buy more talent points so having to spend 150 of them off the bat felt like poo poo.

The Kael and Vashj kills were only bad very early on when only 1 person could get attuned per week. Once Black Temple was actually a finished raid they changed it to the entire raid in one hit and it became trivial.

How many people did you rotate into BT because rekilling Kael was basically a full raid night thanks to how long that fight is.

Yeah, I really can’t get annoyed at paying for more content.

Here’s the thing: if a game is going to run for a long time, it needs to generate revenue beyond the initial sale to fund continued development of new content. Some games do this through microtransactions and gambling. Others do it with subscriptions. Others do it by just selling that content.

There are absolutely bad ways to do this, but I don’t think the core idea of “selling new content” is somehow inherently predatory.

The same is true of making that new content offer rewards beyond what older content could. I do love horizontal progression, don’t get me wrong—if you can add new rewards that are desirable but don’t invalidate older rewards, that’s always great. But that’s not always sustainable long term. Sometimes you need to let new content make players more powerful.

I guess that can be annoying for players who don’t want to pay for new content, but ultimately that new development needs to be paid for somehow, and I’d rather buy a DLC every few months than deal with a loot box-influenced economy.

20 dollars for an extra zone+raid+dungeon and some new mechanics is usually a fine price in the pseudo mmo space inhabited by all the looter shooters. You can look at something like The division for that style of content drop system done well and Destiny 2 for it being done horribly.

On the BT question, by the time it worked We had got all the gear we wanted from SSC and TK. My guild was pretty casual but very large, we had 2 25 man raids and swapped which raid we did each week, so one week weekend did Hyjal and the next weekend they did Black Temple. It helped to keep everything fresh.

The real story is a lot closer to paragon overall was losing money because CoH wasn't bringing in enough to cover the studio's costs. The management wanted to buy CoH from NCSoft but didn't make an acceptable offer. At the same time NCSoft was in a life or death battle with Nexon over a hostile takeover and didn't have the funds to throw on edge case properties.
