Synopsis posted:

Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the fictional story of Police Sergeant David Budd (Rob Stark Richard Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keely Hawes), intent on pushing a new counterterrorism bill through Parliament which would give the security service enhanced surveillance powers, Budd finds himself torn between his duty and beliefs. Four of the six episodes have already aired with the series to end on September 23rd. I've caught up and it is a pretty decent show which packs a lot into its hour long runtime.

The show had the highest launch figure of any drama debut in the last decade in the UK with 10.4 million viewers.

I'm on Episode 2 and I'm loving this show so far. The opening scene was incredible and I'm liking all the political thriller melodrama. Richard Madden plays the role pretty well and I hope we get to see more of him shooting people across London. Also why does everyone call everyone else mum

Really enjoying it, my only irk so far has been the failure of the police / security forces in dentifying the shooter on the roof, I feel in real life they'd identify him in no time.

They’re saying “Ma’am”, but it sounds like “mum” because of their backwoods accents.

Yeah a few little bumps in the finale but solid show. I'm looking forward to seeing which US Network picks it up for the inevitable terrible reimagining.

I have started to watch Line of Duty which had been on my radar but I'd never given any time to before, it's also pretty fantastic. Only halfway through series 2 but I have to say Keeley Hawes is really impressive in both shows.

Someone recommended Line of Duty as being in same genre as this show. Anyone seen it?

Just started watching it since I enjoyed Bodyguard so much. I managed to smash through the first 2 seasons in a couple of nights.

Speaking of Season 2, Final Ep Spoilers
Wow the last 5 minutes of the season finale really took the wind out of my sails in a big way, although there were so many red flags about Lindsay I'd sympathised with the prison treatment and investigation into her, I felt liked I'd been played. Awesome show, probably the biggest compliment I can give it is I don't feel like reaching for my phone like many other shows as each detail can be so important.

Yeah I could see some complaints with the finale but I really did genuinely like it. More than anything I really appreciated the whole shellshocked vet finally owns up to getting mental health care and even then has a happy ending with his family which was a really nice touch. That bomb defusal had me at the edge of my seat and unable to look away. You could pick apart the specifics of the plot if you really wanted to, sure, but I think the overall emotional arc was really well done and satisfying. Great character I'd love to see again.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE DEAD, MOTHERFUCKER?

Fallen Rib
Show shot itself in the foot by having the original bomb girl confess to being a jihadi mastermind that helped orchestrate everything and wants to destroy the west. pure islamaphobic tripe out of an otherwise good show that looked like it was touching on an oft ignored bit of the middle east adventuring (ptsd soldiers coming back and hating the ones that sent them there)

Yeah the last 10-15mins of the finale were flat.

The rest was good though, I expect netflix to throw some money at the creator soon enough.

In case you're vaugely interested in the look of the show (which is not what the show is about, so why would you), I've done a bunch of interviews on it in the last couple of days:

Would you be at any liberty to share what was written in the kompromat files on the tablet? We only saw glimpses of a few words in the show and I was wondering if it was fully scripted out or if it was just lorem ipsum stuff.

We actually had product placement to use Bing on this one, which is still fairly uncommon as the character using it tends to have to be beyond reproach, but our director for the first couple of eps was really anti using Bing because "no-one uses it". This gave us about a month to get the use cleared with Google, and our clearance co-ordinator had a lot of 2am email chains refining the sequence to get it approved. I'm genuinely amazed we got it. We didn't get everything, I did a fake wiki that was close to the line, but it worked for the quick cutaways.

There was like... zero lorem ipsum anywhere in the show. Everything, the powerpoints, the NAIBS reports, scene of crime books, evidence folders etc were all filled in authentically. We had a couple of Police advisors who would explain to us the rough contents of what each bit of paperwork would involve, and then the script editors would write out a large chunk of the text, leaving us to fill other bits in. Continuity editors also broke down the time of day / date of all the scenes and flashbacks so we had accurate info like that (also useful for the CCTV shots). So yeah, the Kompromat was real! Not sure I can really post it in any detail in case somehow it would relate to a second series. There's a crazy amount of 'close ups of pieces of paper' in this show - more than any I've ever done - so I didn't want to get caught with my pants down (see: 123 Fake Street that my assistant put in, that got a close up in DW)

When you do an awesome job no one notices.

The moment you get something only 98% right, it sticks out worse than a badly fitted wig.

I think there was only 1 moment in the entire series where your stuff didn't convince me utterly and that's probably better than anything else I have seen (even The Wire because they used a WinXP search dialogue for an FBI database).

Yes I am saying you did a better job than The Wire.

The technical advisor to the script should have been shot tho.

In this case, I thought 'Blimey, that's a real search. How did they do that? They must have created that fake gov domain and then seeded results in order to get Google to display that result'
