lol the newest veritasium is neat I guess but it's so very obvious a pet project of one of the channel's producers who just wanted to be able to swing an authentic katana around. he doesn't really offer anything valuable or insightful to the video and in fact at one point expresses disappointment that they used some modern equipment to smelt the iron.
|
# ? Mar 22, 2024 19:37 |
i genuinely thought veritasium would've gone belly-up with the exposé that was done on them a while ago

Idk which specific expose they're thinking of but Derek is definitely bad about just being a mouthpiece for big oil or the military or whoever will give him access to some vaguely interesting things. He also has gotten some stuff decently wrong, but the only thing I can think of off the dome is discussing the Super Mario 64 cosmic ray bit flip urban legend that's been disproven pretty heavily

iirc 3 years ago he was paid to shill for google self-driving cars in a pretty dishonest way, but I guess most people who watch veritasium are fine with it veritasium not knowing how to do basic dimensional analysis in the lightbulb switch video was pretty flagrant imo

if this thread has taught me one thing, it's that ProcessX has all the content you actually want "How Japanese samurai swords were made. A 75-year-old swordsman who has made 1,000 Japanese swords. This video does not include any paid promotion." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4seh3ugxJpA

Honestly I miss his old format before he went shill Tom Scott and got a PBS show or whatever. He used to just do man on the street interviews about physics conundrums and then explain with demonstrations. But I guess when Google comes a calling you pivot

The fourth video in the EnChroma saga was released today. TLDR: EnChroma is one of several companies that sell glasses with the false, unsubstantiated claim that they magically fix colourblindness. They paid influencers to make videos about them where they act as if the glasses do work, while they don't. The evidence of them being scammers is overwhelming. In the latest video, this youtuber discovered that EnChroma submitted misleading claims to the FDA, and he sent a formal complaint to the FDA. At this point he might well be at the point where he actually gets that scam company destroyed. Here are all four videos so far in order: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ppobi8VhWwo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QQtOv2PlOE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV4PLFP_7c8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFqDsE2-aFo
