it’s for sure his brand at this point. the few times he’s shown up in videos without the makeup it’s almost jarring seeing his bare face

eeh, disagree. if hitting-some-metric-success was the aim and he could focus on that i honestly think the guy would do way better than he is (and he was on *pathetic* subscription numbers a couple of years back, went on some other channels without makeup and got a bit of a bump). i think he just likes the weirdness.

this being the thread, not being a great public speaker myself i draw a lot of inspiration from his blendercon talk:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qSTcxt2t74

it is not that he is a natural at the form, but loving hell it is an inspiration for putting what effort you can in (and he is above and beyond on effort).

the thing i learned about woodbending is that its compression. You can get away with bending some very thick woods as long as you constrain its length and force the bend to be in compression instead of in tension, which will much more easily break out.

This series of videos is pretty interesting. Basically it's just talking about movies where claims of not using cgi were made and showing that it's complete bullshit. I particularly enjoyed the third video which also gets into the history of matte paintings and talks about movies like Oppenheimer where it seems like all the elements used in the film were originally shot practically, but there's so much going on in the compositing that it's impossible to answer the question of whether it used "CGI" in any meaningful sense.

just finished the first one and yeah, really great stuff. the corridor crew vfx/animation/stunts react/breakdown videos they put out every saturday cover a lot of similar ground, i'd recommend them too.

The most impressive thing to me in this, the age of maximizing shareholder value, and Venture Capital Vultures squeezing blood from stones, is that he was able to just sort of go and do what he needed to do even with his boss saying he shouldn't do it.

Somebody today would see some errant charge come through Concur and your whole research world would come crashing down.
