I think they either explain it in the video or it's in a write down somewhere:

the beta kokiri and that little plane thing from the other game is in the original game.

Then it very quickly goes completely off script. The running man race is in there but they never programmed a win condition. Once they beat the running man and it starts that boss fight, it's all new stuff injected into the game. Everything after that is injected too, including the triforce. The triforce was seen in beta screenshots but wasn't in the real game.

A vid about GPT/language models.

TLDW: language models use tokens. Tokens are either common words or parts of words or individual characters. That way, rare words can be represented by characters, but common words/sentences take up less space. The choice of what words are tokens is simply based on how common those words were in the INITIAL data set.

There are some tokens that are really weird such as PsyNetMessage and SolidGoldMagikarp.
If you use those in a message, GPT-3 completely glitches out and returns nonsensical crap (not in ChatGPT, that has been patched since this was discovered).

Why? Well, what happened is PsyNetMessage is a term that appears very often in some game's debug log that somehow made it into the initial data set, and SolidGoldMagikarp is the name of a reddit user who was extremely active in r/counting... where people just count up numbers. Whatever web scraper they used for the initial dataset picked those up as really common.

Then, when they actually started training the model, the researchers cut out those weird terms and used more sensible data. However, the tokens already existed at that point. Result: the tokens exist but there's basically no information associated to them. The language model has no idea what they "mean" or how to respond to them. This causes the glitchy behaviour.

A similar thing happened 10 years earlier with "what the bleep do we know", a neo-spiritualism film which tried to connect spirituality with quantum woo

quote:

David Albert, a professor at the Columbia University physics department, has accused the filmmakers of warping his ideas to fit a spiritual agenda. "I don't think it's quite right to say I was 'tricked' into appearing," he said in a statement reposted by a critic on "What the Bleep's" Internet forum, "but it is certainly the case that I was edited in such a way as to completely suppress my actual views about the matters the movie discusses. I am, indeed, profoundly unsympathetic to attempts at linking quantum mechanics with consciousness. Moreover, I explained all that, at great length, on camera, to the producers of the film ... Had I known that I would have been so radically misrepresented in the movie, I would certainly not have agreed to be filmed."

"I certainly do not subscribe to the 'Ramtha School on Enlightenment,' whatever that is!" he finished.

It started out interesting. Then it went on an interesting tangent. Then it went on a tangent that made by head explode several times.

Would highly recommend.

neat.

the saddest part of nuclear physics is you can do like hydrogen or simple nuclei, but it's impossible to calculate/solve anything bigger. if you want to calculate stuff from bigger nuclei you just kind of have to make a whole lot of assumptions and it works pretty well, but not really.

Yes. More precisely: the formulae become impossible to solve once more than one particle is involved (for the hydrogen atom we can focus on just the electron and it's solvable, but helium with 2 electrons isn't). At that point, scientists use a combination of smart assumptions and just bruteforcing an answer using powerful computers.

The result of this ugly brute force solution is still orders of magnitude more precise than trying to solve it without quantum mechanics.

Isn't it ironic how the good youtubes video thread is now having a discussion about how bad videos are?

Carbon dioxide

There was somewhat of a cooperation with the channel Looking Glass Universe.

As in, mostly 3b1b gave her some advice, and they synced the release of the videos.

I won't link to it, it's two 30 min videos that meander quite a lot before they get to the point, but they had an interesting conclusion that 3b1b didn't mention.

Everything 3b1b mentions is based around the math of plane waves - infinitely long waves of light. Because that makes the math hell of a lot simpler.
But what it doesn't directly explain is why, when you send a PULSE of light through water, the front of the pulse is also slowed down. Based on the plane wave explanation, you might expect it's going at C, but just with a shifted phase. That's not what happens though.

So, she ended up trying to make a computer simulation. Which was very hard because the math of pulses of light is much more complicated than those of plane waves. It seemed to be that at the very front of the pulse, the secondary light from the electrons completely cancelled out the original light through destructive interference. This happened also for materials with a negative refraction index, which is why light still arrives slower than C through a material like that.

She couldn't really completely prove this, though. And she tried to get in touch with other experts but nobody else could or wanted to help her either. Apparently the Feynman lectures don't really explain it either.

I expect now the vid is out someone is going to publish a more concrete reply soon. Either way it's interesting to think about.

The fourth video in the EnChroma saga was released today.

TLDR: EnChroma is one of several companies that sell glasses with the false, unsubstantiated claim that they magically fix colourblindness. They paid influencers to make videos about them where they act as if the glasses do work, while they don't.
The evidence of them being scammers is overwhelming.

In the latest video, this youtuber discovered that EnChroma submitted misleading claims to the FDA, and he sent a formal complaint to the FDA.
At this point he might well be at the point where he actually gets that scam company destroyed.

Here are all four videos so far in order:
