The meteor balls really are the apotheosis of CrossCode puzzles.

They have a unique reaction for each element you hit them with, can combine with any other puzzle element and can combine multiple puzzle elements!

They're... perfect.

In further fuckery, on rexamination of my footage I have managed to get a double-KO while fighting Apollo. I'm not completely sure exactly what happened. I think Lea shifted out of Wave into Fire and wound up on critical HP while having Jolt (whoops), then hit Apollo with Scarlet Rain, which almost KO'd him and set him on fire, and then in the next instant or close enough as the game cares, Jolt procced on Lea and the KO marker came up and Apollo got a point, and then Burn procced on Apollo and the KO marker refreshed itself and Lea got a point. The spectators proceeded as though Lea had won that round. Lea got all HP back and Apollo only got half. I had to go frame by frame through the video to determine this.

E: in further further fuckery, I am prepared to swear that on my PS4 run there was a bit in Ku'lero where Wervyn the guide author shows up next to a chest and has a dialogue bit where he's all "no we can't progress I need to update the guide" but in my PC run there was no trace of this. What's deal?

Maybe their location changes depending on your own progress with the dungeon? A few characters show up in different areas at different times and you'll probably miss a few of them. I definitely remember seeing Wervyn and Puella having that convo there and I play PC.

God drat it all. I'm so close to getting The Take of Ku'lero Temple - The Fall. I've been at this for nearly a week.

This is the most agonisingly closest I've gotten so far. I have to share this with someone, even though the finished take will end up in the LP.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR_rIiAFbW0

It's not enough I clear this room well. It needs to look good. This needs to be Smokin' Spheromancer Style.

Checklist:
Suffering not a (solo) guardian to live beyond the first attack
Critical Eternal Winter
720 noscope Ether Snipe trickshot
The Correct Way To Break Beearbot
Flare Burn Shield Vault
Finally actually use Flickering Stars
[TBD decent use of shock tech vs the Wave Crystallids]
First Cut Anime Finisher on last remaining Guardian
Absolute dedication to Walking Away From The Explosion

I'm getting there. I ate a stupid hit against Wave Guardian because his shield attacks keeps going even if you dash through it and it can hit you out of Lv2 dash techs (I think it does actually stop if you fully break the Guardian but I need to be quicker to do that, and I need to do it in a ways that conserves some SP). I also got unbelievably lucky with the positioning of the dual guardians and then proceeded to target the wrong one with the dash (although this meant I could get the correct Anime Finisher later. Also in this take I didn't deal with the Cold Crystallids as convincingly as I'd like.

I'll get this!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPUG2gbJbe4

It still isn't quite perfect perfect, there were one or two slight whiffs, the framerate got a bit fucky on the first floor, and it turns out Gungnir doesn't have i-frames so I had to take a single hit, but that single hit was what makes That Ether Snipe possible so I'm afraid it's non negotiable. This took far to goddamn long to do but it's going in the LP for goddamn sure. I can rest now.

I still feel that the characters give Apollo too much credit for too little actual change, but I am also extremely glad that they made Apollo and Joern explicitly a gay couple rather than just hinting at it with subtext. It bugs me when writers try to have their cake and eat it with queer content by hinting and insinuating at it in a plausibly deniable way and pretending that's the same as representation, and I'm really glad that CrossCode didn't go down that path.

I have the feeling that this was done in response to fandom interpretation, although it's still possible that it was considered canonically true by the developers beforehand but just left open in the game. But, like, come on, they own cats together and get in arguments over watering the plants... the fandom interpretation was inevitable.

Farewell, marble-dwellers!
I got this game recently and I'm having some struggles with the controls (kb+m). Specifically, melee attacks don't orient to the mouse cursor. It makes it hard to pivot while using melee as trying to re-orient with the keyboard will move the character slightly. Ranged controls seem fine except I do find the "melee circle" cumbersome. Is there some config editing I can do or a mod I can download to change these things?

I'm (pleasantly) surprised that that tweet has already gotten over 12k likes. Is Radical Fish not as obscure an indie dev as I thought? Or maybe that guy's just a legend in the indie pixel art community. Either way, happy about the apparent reach they have.

Also, I can't tell if this is just joke placeholder text, or something that could realistically end up in the game. It could easily fit in as CrossCode NPC dialogue. Will Project Terra also be set in a virtual world?

Radical Fish aren't massively popular (although frankly they deserve to be) but sometimes if you just make something that looks really impressive and tweet it out it turns out people will share it around and you'll briefly earn The Favour Of The Algorithm.

They have separately confirmed that that dialogue is all placeholder. We don't know anything about the plot or setting of Project Terra yet. I recall them saying it will not be any kind of continuation of CrossCode, although if I were them I might be lying about that. Still, that's what they've said.

As far as I can tell it's impossible: there's no cross-save between versions of any kind except the Xboxes One and Xboxes Series (I think).

I'm also completely mystified as to what's holding up the DLC on PS5. I can only presume it is some kind of esoteric code catastrophe, since the PS4 version is functioning fine and the Xboxes Series have had their enhanced version since more or less day one. CrossCode's console ports are kind of some technical nonsense to begin with.

It's really cool that they built all the graphics in HTML5 but that made porting the game to consoles a pretty serious undertaking. I don't know why that would be a bigger issue for the PS5 than any other system, but I'm betting that's the root cause.

C'tron's water trutherism seems fishy to me. I'unno, I think the whole idea of water trutherism is a conspiracy.

I'm serious. I think C'tron came up with it as a joke, and leaned into the notion that philosophically speaking there really is no way for an avatar to prove the water in the Playground is real, and when he realised how much it annoyed Emilie he started playing it up as revenge for all the dialogues in which she called him a nerd.

You can, like, not do them?

On the whole, every quest in CrossCode is either

a) Some kind of unique combat encounter or boss
b) Basically passively completable as you explore an area doing other things
c) Actually a fetch quest but there to make sure you've explored a future area first, basically a little hook to make you remember to come back to town later, otherwise as above

Often they are c followed by b followed by a.

Basically, if someone asks you to bring them some stuff, just nod along and go on your way until the game pops up a notification telling you you've got the stuff, which will happen without your direct will.

It was long overdue, but I finally picked this back up where I left off 3 years ago, having been too intimidated by relearning everything (especially the combat). I left off at Sapphire Ridge and predictably got my rear end kicked by some of those monsters coming back. But I eventually got back into the swing of things and spent 50+ hours over the past 2 weeks 100%ing chests/quests and finishing both the main game and DLC. I might even understand the combat system now way better than I did before.

Anyway, this game is simply a masterpiece and deserves the kind of acclaim enjoyed by the big indie names, like Hades, Hollow Knight, Celeste, etc. Now that I'm done after ~120 hours, I can finally feel legitimate saying this is one of my absolute favorite games of all time.

It's kind of bittersweet knowing there's pretty much no more new story/world for me to experience with CrossCode, minus whatever minor dialogue changes NG+ brings. But I have no doubt Radical Fish will deliver something amazing with their next project.

Speaking of which... One of my favorite Twitch streamers has been doing a first playthrough (which was kind of my impetus for finishing my own), and a dev has popped in from time to time. I asked them if we can expect any big news about Project Terra anytime soon, and they hinted about Gamescom. Not to hype anyone up too much.

My secret? I don't have any bones.
Upon steam saying theyre going to gently caress up library share, I decided to finally give crosscode a proper try after losing to apollo 1 a few years ago, saying i would try again after a break, and not doing that.

Holy gently caress, this game rules??? its my #2 game of all time and while I have nitpicks (omega plant drops are dumb, some quests like the monk trials are terrible) i dont really have overall complaints.

Also may have helped i played the entire thing in a discord call while streaming. I do well with groups, and was on break, so my schedule was frequently to, upon finishing my morning stuff, hop on my computer and play crosscode for 8 hours straight, every day, for about a week.

best arts in the game are lightning prophecy and ether snipe. best fights are shizuka and the gods. I can't pick a favorite for a number of aspects but i like Improvising as far as songs go. the worst area is autumns rise because Im a terrible judge of what parts of the houses can be jumped on and it has multiple chests that made me go "oh, come on" while trying to complete the area

longest recorded S rank streak was in gaia's garden, game logs it at slightly over an hour and 673 enemies killed. I feel like the time isnt quite accurate (too high) but im also just not a good judge of that and sometimes you do just get stuck in the zone

only 2 puzzles ever stumped me: faj'ro temple dented crown puzzle (either solution), and the hidden shock/wave room in gaia's garden, and I think anyone who took over 15 minutes on final basegame ball escort has a skill issue (which is fine, assist mode exists for a reason, but don't blame the game for your own faults)

The final baseball escort puzzle owns because you get this horrible sinking feeling as you see the puzzle elements all manifest and the characters even comment on it, but I'm pretty sure it is much easier than it looks by design.

My secret? I don't have any bones.
oh for sure it is. The wind walls are angled correct by default, and there's always the floor guiding you.

My strat was, contrary to every other ball escort, to actually look at the room and figure out the path ahead of time. And then i didnt bother with the top left, since the rest was expansive enough that I didnt think i'd be reasonably able to memorize the entire room.

and then the top left can be easily sightread in time so i did that part of it first try.

But at the very least it seems very possible to brute force/trial and error your way to doing it right. Just about the only actually tricky part is what you're doing with the box, but if you trust the designer (ha) and go with the flow in regards to where magnets are placed, it'll work out pretty easily as well.

GimmickMan
Dec 27, 2011

Its a deceptively simple room and I think its meant to make you feel like a genius for getting it done on first try. Like, the elevator in the same dungeon skips a whole bunch of floors after making you think doing all of them individually is going to take like 6 hours to complete. I can't think of a reason to do the latter other than to deceive the player and give them a sense of relief when their expectations are proven wrong, and if that's what they're doing then the puzzle being easy complements that.

The puzzle design in CrossCode is genuinely the most interesting I've ever seen, not necessarily because of the puzzles themselves, but moreso in the way they are paced and the affective design of any given dungeon or section of a dungeon.

Add to this that good puzzle design is very hard and I can't help but be extremely impressed.

I have said over and over again that there are things that Actual Puzzle Games can learn from CrossCode. I've never seen a game nail this balance more precisely. But yeah. CrossCode steps over a crucial design threshold, in that its puzzles are specifically not designed in a way to prevent any possibility of you getting actually stuck. You can fiddle with the accessibility timers a little, insofar as that helps much of anything, but you absolutely cannot proceed until you solve the things (or commit to a stupid cheese on occasion). They are real puzzles. And yet, they are curved so elegantly that in practice this will almost never happen, enabling them to keep up the optimal level of friction the whole way through.

I still don’t get why some things are even described as puzzles. In a Zelda game where go into a room with an unlit torch and light it and a door opens, I don’t know what exactly I would call that interaction but my instinct would be that I did an activity and not that I solved a puzzle. Same for shooting an arrow into a statue with an eyeball when there is nothing else even in the room. What puzzle? I just did an activity. I of course understand “why” these things are in Zelda games (so children can do them) but I rarely solve a puzzle.
