hasnt there been massive turnover due to the outcome of that scab reffing poo poo? they crushed the union and all the old guys left pretty quickly cause the new rules were awful, even if they were grandfathered out of the most obnoxious ones(like not being allowed to have offseason jobs)

IT'S ME
Things just seem to be running much more undisciplined in regards to refereeing, I’ve seen multiple make-up holding calls just in the random games I’ve caught. I try to avoid being too hard on em, and I hate agreeing with commentators on any of this but it seems like five years ago, refs used to make a conscious effort to not alter the flow of the game. I’m trying not to be too whiny about this, but ref actions seem especially ham-fisted this year.

Hell, I actually figured a teachable way for sack specialists to pull their weight under the new regime: just wrap up the quarterback, squeeze their shoulders and elbows and shake them until the ball comes out! There shouldn’t be a particular rule against that unless the refs start whistling all contact dead

Bad, very bad!
That particular part of the rule isn't new and has been going on for a while. I think originally it was intended for egregious contact, but for years it's been the case that you can't touch a quarterback's head at all

I think if the NFl was more honest about it - it's less about player safety and more about NFL owners protecting their financial investment - we'd be having a better dialog right now. instead, it's just further hypocrisy.

Just frustrating. Tonight was ridiculous too - the first half of that game had, what, 5 roughing the passer penalties? Just insanity.

I think the official focused on the hit to the head, but A. Ben sold the hell out of it, and B. It wasn't even that hard of a hit. If it's a zero-tolerance policy for contact to the head (which isn't an unreasonable stance to take) then the league should be more clear about it.

Yeah it has been a rule for a long time, it's just another one that gets called very inconsistently.

I thought so too but if you watch carefully he was putting that leg out in order to try and avoid putting weight on the quarterback. He wouldn't have caught his cleat otherwise, ergo he wouldn't have torn his ACL otherwise. It's a bit of a stretch but not a huge one at all

gently caress all notions of physical health. A good percentage of their wages comes from the nascar principle: some interest from a substantial part of their viewership comes from people who want to see human carnage. It's a roll of the dice as to whether your knee will blow out before you earn your millions (or as to whether you'll experience both: The Jimmy G Method).
Every player has access to the data now. Every parent does as well. When you strap up, you can't complain about any potential physical outcome.

And knowing that the success of the league is a result of its physicality, you can't complain if the focus on health dilutes its quality if you care about the league's longevity at all.

Accept new rules if they let you keep watching hundreds of pounds of flesh run into each other at speeds that would be registered on traffic cameras. It's called adapting rather than becoming extinct, you Neanderthals

Ben, along with Cam Newton have gotten very few of these calls over the years to the point where it's been ridiculous, so I give very little fucks about him finally benefiting from QB protection calls. Good for him

These rules are poo poo though and need to be tweaked. We really shouldn't just accept any rule the NFL cares to come up with, and we should criticize something if it isn't good. The way the NFL comes up with rule changes it's like they don't understand at all what the consequences will be.

I hear you but it's impossible for me to care about Ben in any way but a negative one. The thought of him getting slammed by D lineman actually makes me smile. Also, flopping is shameful and always will be, and I'll gladly criticize any player who does it.

quote:

However, according to several people who were on the call, the expectation is that there will be fewer roughing the passer calls moving forward. The league is emphasizing to officials they need to be sure a player applied all or most of his body weight when making a hit before throwing the flag, sources said.

Many of the competition committee members felt the hit by Packers pass rusher Clay Matthews on Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins in Week 2 was not a foul, sources said.
[...]
The ultra-simplified message from the competition committee to officials is this: See the entire act. Make sure you see all of it. If you aren't sure, don't throw the flag. The NFL can always review the play later and issue fines if warranted.

So far this week I haven't seen a single call of roughing the passer. The emphasis on fining later is a good compromise at the moment I think.
