Well, this should be entertaining.

I will say that Komaru is cute and good, at least.

Is there a summary of the previous two games that doesn't involve going through multiple ~150 part LPs? I'm interested, but I'm not that interested.

DR1: A high school for talented kids is made, but crazy fashionista destroys the world and subjects her classmates to a murder game. Six people survive, those being an average Joe (Komaru's brother), a kid who is basically Seto Kaiba (Byakuya), a detective who might as well be the love interest of average Joe, an authoress with a serial killer persona, a dumb swimmer, and a fortune teller who is basically a gag character. Fashionista kills herself.

DR2: Survivors of the first game try their best to reform Fashionista's henchmen in the Matrix after joining an organization trying to save the dying world. Most of them seemingly die, but are told there is a very slim possibility they might live. Five of the henchmen reform to the way they were before they met crazy fashionista.

Maybe it's just me, but there's something I find a little excessive about this introduction sequence? I mean, I know this is a different type of game from the preceding two, but in those games, people only died when it was important to the plot or at the culmination of a trial. Here, we literally have mobs of faceless people being slaughtered, and it feels a little... I dunno. Maybe I'm just being overly critical, but that kind of took me out of things immediately. I think a more personal, intimate kind of setting where maybe it's a group of 16 that have to navigate an empty, already destroyed city and survive might've been more my thing.

Also, invariably someone is going to draw attention to it, so I'll just go ahead and say

One of the ones who reform is also a literally crafted super genius with every talent possible made by the school performing brain surgery on an even more average joe than the first main character.

Nagito wanted to commit murder for muh hope, Teruteru tried to kill him for everyone else (or so he could escape and see his mom) only to wind up killing the fake Togami, Nagito preys on that desire to escape and helps him because muh hope vs despair, only to wind up ditching him at the end because he couldn't lie/bluff to literally save his life.

Worth noting that Mondo beating Chihiro to death was an accidental murder. Or, at least, the most accidental of the bunch. That case also has Byakuya's biggest rear end in a top hat moment that he never really gets comeuppance for, in hindsight.

Nagito's Wild Ride was started to kill SHSL Despair.

At the end of the game, the survivors are no longer SHSL Despair.

Yasuhiro was actually the murder victim of the demo case of DR1, as I recall. Then he was replaced with Sayaka in the actual game.

TheMcD posted:

Game sets up Sayaka as a childhood friend sidekick type? BAM, she's dead, and she actually never liked you and wanted to frame you for her attempted murder.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. It's just implied that she did a lot of shady things to become an idol/pop sensation and figured "What's one more bad thing to secure my spot in that position?".

Well, Komaru seems to be involved in a game of sorts, so I think it's not quite fourth wall breaking as kinda sorta poking at the fourth wall.

Also, I always wondered why Nagito would be a servant to the kids that are using Monokumas considering he's in SHSL Despair.

I think Nagito wasn't required to put the collar and chain leash on, he just did it himself one day and all of the kids think someone else asked him to do it.

I'd believe either

A. Monaca told him to

B. When he came in saying he was SHSL Despair they were impressed, only for him to go on about hope or something, causing them to collar him.

So we've got a bunch of kids who seem to have it in for all adults, to the extent that they'll distrust and/or kill anyone over 18(?). They all seem to have suffered some form of abuse or neglect from adults (Daimon seems a possible exception, but we know Leon hated baseball so it could be something like that). I think it's a possible theory, especially given the way this series tends to portray the motivation for evil. That does not bode well for Utsugi's backstory at this point.

Generally teenaged and up seems to be the age range. I don't think Komaru is older than 16, but I could be wrong.

This is the second time that Touko has called Komaru cute within probably an hour of meeting her, and I'm fairly certain that's more compliments she's paid her than everyone who isn't Byakuya in the first game combined.

So maybe this is her awkward attempt at flirting. :v:

If you told me that Komaru was quirky enough to get into Hope's Peak but Makoto's luck caused the letter to wind up in his hands instead, I'd believe it.

It'd require no first name or gender pronouns to be used in the letter, but I'd believe it.
