So I finally got around to setting up my remote backups last week. Before that I had just been backing stuff up to a different drive on my computer, but it was all hooked up to the same motherboard. Basically they were good if I accidentally deleted something I needed, or if my boot drive died or something, but not for much else. Last week I remembered I had a Raspberry Pi kicking around and while I was setting it up to run as a remote book server, I figured it'd be nice to turn it into a NAS and just plop my backups there in case something happened to my entire computer. ONE WEEK LATER I was getting some and like a drat idiot I ran an .exe with some really robust viruses and had to nuke my whole system. Like fully reformat all of my drives and do a clean install of my OS. It's been a giant headache, but at least I still have all my files. I think I lost literally one picture I downloaded from somewhere or another. I am never ever going back to just having my backups on a different drive in my computer. Now I just have to convince my husband to plop his backups on my Pi too (there's plenty of space), but he's the type to procrastinate until something happens to him. Not even my adventures in computing this week seem to have lit a fire under his rear end. I might just have to go behind his back and set it up if I can remember the password on his computer.
