there's not a lot of rts out there with set pieces as good as destroying the dam in generals

there's a new rts out, called king of the world, based on the old warcraft 3 risk maps. i bought it and tried for half an hour to get a game going, and saw 0 other players. don't bother

i didn't care for tooth and tail at all. the campaign was way too easy, the gameplay too simple and having every map be procedurally generated is a major turn off. plus the multiplayer was dead

they got frank klepacki for the music too

they were actually making a new game like myth. it got stuck in early access though and then development stopped without it ever getting a real release

cossacks 1 is great but i thought 3 was pretty bad. they hosed up the campaign so every mission is either forever war against opponents with unlimited resources until you manage to grind them down (or rush them instantly) or overtuned missions where you have like 5 guys against 5000 that they made impossible through patches. not exactly enough to it to recommend it over 1 multiplayer wise either

its been like a decade since i played 1 so i'm not 100% on the details but there didn't seem to be much new gameplay wise outside of the new campaigns missions (and several factions being ripped out so they can be dlc)

Can someone explain the appeal of the C&C series to me? Is it that multiplayer is particularly fun?

I've never been enamored of C&C in single player. The non-fighty bits are too slow, while fighty bits felt too fast (ie, units seem to be made of tissue paper) and too unit-spammy to me to actually rate as enjoyable. I liked the concept/setting (particularly Tiberian Sun) but never really seemed the enjoy the execution.

The only one in the series I actually liked was Red Alert 3 and that's largely because of how ridiculous a lot of it was and the sheer amount of ham on display in the cinematics. I literally only bought the game because of Tim Curry.

the incredibly over the top story and fun varied campaign missions really. whether its cultists vs globalists or soviets vs capitalists watching all the over the top cutscenes and pretending i was invading america brought me a lot of joy when i played them as a kid

the trailer made it seem like a very budget and outdated they are billions clone so i dont have high hopes for it

i've tried every spellforce but i always thought both the rpg and the rts sides were too shallow to really enjoy. both parts consisted mostly of attack moving and throwing a few incredibly powerful hero moves to beat everything

Anyone have opinions on Stellar Monarch? I haven't played it but the videos I've seen make it look like a budget CK2 in space.

i thought it was a bit too shallow to enjoy, not all that much to engage with nor all that much personality to the whole thing which makes it hard to care

Generals was really, really good about that. We played a number of LANs where I used the sneaky terrorist faction to become a night unkillable thorn in everyone else's side due to my dozen or so invisible bases.

i tried doing that but my friends would always ban me from playing them, its hard to be a sneaky rear end in a top hat...

there's a very... very indie looking myth clone coming up

you could capture buildings in Z, from 1996, as well. gameplay revolved around it

does anyone remember the eastern front game where you have to balance obeying your superiors for resources/not ending up in jail at the end of the game?

Battle Realms is great and has a recent remake (i havent played) out.

I’d also like to mention Dawn of War 1 and 2 and Battle for Middle earth.

Less character driven but still with fun scenarios are the non mythology age of empires games, Company of heroes (basically just saving private ryan), world in conflict and the Men of War series

how is the campaign? i can't imagine the multiplayer lasting all that long considering its a dlc of a not super popular game so i'd have to get my money's worth from that, really enjoyed the mow campaign back in the day

They're good but they're hard as balls, especially Barb. Specialists and reinforcements are way more expensive in Barb (justifiably, I guess; they were incredibly cost-effective in the base campaign), and they tend to get more difficult over time, whereas when I play the original campaign I just snowball through the last couple scenarios.

Blitzkrieg has some fun alt-hist scenarios (like invading France before Scandinavia, and invading Britain). Barbarossa doesn't really have any of that. If you count the two alternate paths in Blitz, the two DLC campaigns are about equal in length. If you want more UoC, just go with Blitz for now.

do these add anything for the base game, or are the new mechanics i spy on the steam page only available in the dlc?

I've never heard about most of these. How many of them are actually good? I'm disappointed Tzar isn't there :crossarms:

a lot of them were fairly standard clones cause the genre was still profitable, but theres some unique stuff in there. Arsenal as an example had a somewhat basic grognard like supply system in it where you needed to keep your units supplied with fuel, and money was made by building apartments. if you destroyed your enemies apartments it was seen as an evil act to do, and the evil nazi-esque leaders would like you more, while the american likes would like you less
