Thank you for making this thread!

I really think that the 8-bit series is super underrated. I heard good things about Tooth & Tail, do you guys think it holds up still? I know that the shelf life of games these days is pretty low.

A new 2D RTS thing in the style of Warcraft 2 and 3 just came out on Steam, made in Unity. It has a free demo. I played it and thought it was pretty decent. Their campaign is fully voice acted and has cutscenes and whatnot. Surpassed my expectations, at least.

Here's the link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/946660/Loria/

I think that the environment art is bad, but apart from that it's okay imo. I recommend at least playing the first couple of campaign missions in the Demo. The download for it is on the right in the sidebar.

Why would you copy Starcraft to that degree, just why. :psyduck:

Every month a new Minecraft-like or DayZ-like comes out and makes millions in sales while we refuse to support RTS developers, then we turn around and wonder why it feels like the genre is dead. imo developers who wear their inspirations on their sleeve (e.g. copying the starcraft formula) are cool and good, as long as the game turns out to be fun.

I remember that there was a guy who remade the main game loops of Myth 2 but nobody bought it on Steam so he shut it down. It really sucks that the video game people doesn't (financially) support indie RTS games.

Tooth and Tail is good

Northgard is good

I don't know why they aren't more popular (though Northgard is peaking around 3500-4000 players every month)

Does anyone feel like it's weird that the Age of Empires 2 has outlived and outlasted the Starcraft community and the C&C community? It's always been this weird island that's been detached from everything and it just somehow keeps going strong for some reason. I feel like all of the drama and issues that RTS communities have had over the decades doesn't apply to the AoE2 community.

I think AoE2 has way more people playing than watching though and I'd be surprised if SC2's daily player counts over the past 7 years can come anywhere close to AoE2's consistency (even after being split across 2 games):

Also, Tooth & Tail is very underrated right now imo: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/545898904?t=0h20m37s

I didn't buy in but was mildly curious at an attempted indie Warcraft 3. Turns out this was one of those cases where they needed EA money to complete the project and didn't get the sales needed to get across the finish line. Trying to make a MP and e-sports focused game probably didn't help.

Here's a released indie Warcraft 2: https://store.steampowered.com/app/946660/Loria/

It has a free demo and I thought the campaign was fun.

Petroglyph did a good job with the 8-Bit series, but why would they remake RA1? It has already been done by the OpenRA people, so they're not adding anything. Is it just because EA wants to take a dump on the OpenRA developers so they're giving Petroglyph a bunch of money to do it for them?

C++ code from 1995 isn't going to help inform new projects. The most it'll do is get some retired software people to make an open source version of command and conquer or red alert (i.e. an Open "RA", if you will) like what they did with Doom. It's just good PR to help you forget about that sense of pride and accomplishment they gave you a few years ago.

edit-- the mod support is good news though

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1500970/BlackChain/

A new indie RTS just popped up on steam for five bucks, and it seems interesting. It's set in a future where giant corporations use cryptocurrency (I think that's where 'BlackChain' comes in, as a pun on 'blockchain'), and the campaign is looking to be similar in gameplay execution to StarCraft, except you mine bitcoins and have to keep buildings separate enough for the bitcoin miners to stay cool (heat makes them slow down when mining bitcoins).

There's also a StarCraft style briefing for each campaign mission, and since you're working for a megacorp, it shows the various corporations' stock values rising and falling before each mission (although I think it's just fluff, fun fluff though). I hope to play more past the first two missions when I have more time.

Nice link, thanks! Will try it out. Was wondering why we don't have more Starcraft-likes.

Iron Harvest is a good video game that is fun, has a non-toxic casual multiplayer and co-op community, isn't corrupted by in-game ads or freemium content, and isn't made by skinhead developers who sexually assault their employees until they commit suicide only to cover it up by crunching everyone else to re-release the same game every year while smugly asking "do you really want chat channels?".

Also the bear is adorable, the voice acting is great, the characters are memorable, and the campaign's story is very good compared to its competitors. The game punches well above its weight for an indie team and the devs are worth supporting.

It's not that they don't exactly exist. But.. it's also 'good luck finding them without help'.

BlackChain was cool and good -- it hits the same notes that Brood War did and is a good game considering it was a solo dev project. It even comes with a map editor, of all things, modeled after Brood War's editor.

Human race is a mix between Terran and Humans. Elf race is a mix between Protoss and Night Elves. Orc race is a mix between Zerg and Orcs. Didn't notice any Undead mechanics. If the game's marketing goes well then probably they can do some kind of Undead stuff as a 4th race or something.

Favorite part was how nobody got sexually harrassed or abused during its development.
