I'm going to drown! For no reason at all!

Listening to some of the press out there today, and a developer mentioned that there are still half a million people playing CoH games monthly. Which is...more than I expected by a lot.

Sounds like this one is off to a decently promising start, too.

Edit: also, drat Sega Europe’s current strategy/management lineup looks quite good.

Lots of people who played the closed beta were straining against the NDA to say it was actually quite good, so I’m going in with a bit of optimism.

“More CoH” is probably pretty reassuring to a lot of people after DoW3.

It's made by the Northgard folks, so decent chance there's some gameplay similarities there.

Old World. It's a 4x like Civ but the choices are meatier and the AI is significantly more fun. It understands the game better and can put up a reasonable fight.

:yeah:

Especially if you enjoyed Civ V I’d give this a look.

Welcome to Return of Rome, a completely new type of expansion pack which brings Age of Empires, the title that started it all, into Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition as a brand new self-contained experience. This new expansion will allow you to challenge friends with the original sixteen Age of Empires civilizations — plus one brand-new Return of Rome exclusive civilization, the Lac Viet— and relive the triumph and trials of antiquity. Battle your way across the ancient world with three new campaigns featuring conquerors, empire-builders, and gifted tacticians fighting desperately against fate! As an additional bonus, the Romans will no longer be bound by time as they become a new playable civilization within Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, ready to battle in the new Age.

Falling Frontier got a new trailer and it continues to look like incredibly my jam. Been waiting for something else to make space combat that reminds me of SoaSE.

Also, go Hooded Horse. I feel like an appreciable percentage of the recent games I’ve really liked or upcoming games on my wishlist they’ve picked up to publish.

The AoE2DE expansion that leaked like last week went official today, launching the 31st: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2555420/Age_of_Empires_II_Definitive_Edition__The_Mountain_Royals

New civs are Georgia and Armenia with an update (and new campaign) for Persia.

Yeah I think things are probably way better now and goofing forward than they have been probably since release. It’s a shame studios keep doing this, but now that they’re back to making the things they’re good at the game will probably get better very fast. And I think it’s already very good.

Good for AoE. I wasn’t really expecting 4 to be so much of a success but it seems to have carved out its own place even with AoE2 still being very popular.

Is this the thread to ask for tactical rpg suggestions? I've played Final Fantasy Tactics ,Tactics Ogre and Into the Breach, and now I'm hooked.

If you want something more similar to the first two then try Triangle Strategy (or get into the world on FFT/TO mods).

Other recs that are more systems focused and not as big on story: Age of Wonders 3/4, XCOM 2 (with the War of the Chosen expansion), The Last Spell, Wartales, Battle Brothers, Jagged Alliance 3, TROUBLESHOOTER. All are solid tactical combat games with their own spins. If you’re really new to the genre I’d get XCOM 2/expansions first, especially if you’re on PC. It’s arguably the least RPG but still probably the best tactical combat+management game out there, with a gajillion mods to give you as much playtime as you want.

AoM Retold is out later this year: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1934680/Age_of_Mythology_Retold/

Also a new (campaign focused) AoE2DE expansion in a few weeks: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2805510/Age_of_Empires_II_Definitive_Edition__Victors_and_Vanquished/

Looks like it’s a combination of existing user-made scenarios updated with voice acting, new music, bug fixes and stuff and then five new ones. Pretty cool stuff if you’re into Age 2 campaigns.

Northgard is indeed really cool. Actually that studio in general is - last I checked they were like 70-80 people in France that had shipped 4 games in the last 7 years and still actively support 3 of them. Northgard has 2 new expansions and multiple free content updates planned for this year after initially releasing in 2017!

Dune doesn’t really look like my jam to play but I really enjoy watching PvP matches as a second screen kind of thing. It’s a fun mix of politicking, tactics and strategy that isn’t too short and (usually) not too long.

Sega sold Relic?

What's that mean for the future of CoH?

The announcement said they're still working on supporting their games. Idk if that means they own the IP now or at least have a license for it or what.

Longer term? Who knows. Relic's recent owned output doesn't seem like the sort that could keep a game company afloat - hopefully they can land some good contract work. Or maybe Microsoft can buy them and collect one of the last remaining RTS Pokemon.
