The sequel is in early access, it's more of a remaster really, but far from done. Go play the original and support Arcen, a very good games company (mainly run by a single dude!).

He's single now ladies.

Gladius is legit awesome. It's closer to a traditional RTS than a 4X even though it's turn based. You build up a base with different buildings churning out different units and you send them off into the meat grinder in the centre of the map. No diplomacy, a very basic economy. It's great.

More recent Total War games let you play coop with both the turnbased campaign and the RTS battles.

When your artist quits because you ask them to design a nice big "exterminate" button that you can press to liquify all those pesky minorities, maybe stop and think a little.

Before the explorminate site shuts down, you'll want to go save a copy of the 4X database on its site - probably the best index of every 4X game released.

This game owns bones. Turn based, but throws out all the old TBS conventions and plays more like an RTS. The AI is great and the factions all play really differently.

It takes a little bit of fiddling, mostly because you have to manually make an options file but shouldn't really be a problem.

Oh wow thanks for that. Here we are in TYOOL 2021 and I'm finally getting to play BFME2. I even got AOTR working.

Is there a strategy game that combines historical city building with some degree of military gameplay? Order of Battle is very good. The base game is free, and you buy modules. Avoid the naval stuff though.

Panzer Corps 2 is the classic. There are lots of modules for that too.

Unity of Command 1 is better than 2 for noobs. 1 keeps things simpler.

That was the good part of the recent Nebulous Fleet Command Dev diaries where they said they are introducing the whole economic management side simply to give you strategic options. A single doomstack fleet will not be able to protect the economy against multiple small raiding fleets.
