This is Jason we're talking about. I think, somehow, it still counts.

Does his actor improv bits because I remember seeing one of the gag reels from S1 where he basically does the same scene over again (him guessing how he died) but with incredulously dumb things that are still very Florida. Or is it a case of the writers having multiple options and letting the actor do them all and then picking the best one in editing?

Because I think this is a case of that.

Both sides seem to be willing to bend the rules to their advantage when it suits them, but only the Bad Place people, as far as we know, are willing to out and out break them, though it still seems to be in more covert ways. There's a Higher Power that would mete out punishment if said rules were openly broken but we have no idea as to if that's actually true or how it would be enforced.

It could be that they weren't getting any more work so they lost motivation to work on that in-pile since nothing new is gonna get added to it and unless the deadline isn't the end of the universe, there's probably no rush at that point.

The idea that it's super hard to get points now because the things that gave you points were decided on when you could only influence a few thousand people seems pretty legit and I like it.

But Mindy St Clair and the way time works feels like it hurts the revelation of the 512 years. St Clair means the bad place can't be hacking it, it's definitely down to making points mega loving hard to earn. We know that the threshold of points goes up as you get older as well, which is why Doug is hosed.
So if the good place is abandoned like this episode seems to infer (or at least they don't care) what was going on with St Clair? They really need to explain her again now I think. I guess she has the advantage of whatever she did was "new" so that they're assigning points values to it for the first time ever, at least.

But since time doesn't exist and the guys lived for 300 years in the Bad Place how can it be that "512 years passed"? It just feels like that time bit throws it out of whack.

With Mindy, I assume it's because her foundation would've been so large and so massive that it definitely would've breached the wide reaching scale that the Accountants seem to factor in. Unfortunately, she died just before she could actually put it into action. Remember that the point of contention was if her points could be added posthumously

As far as the "time stream" goes: say it with me: Jeremy Bearimy.

So far, whenever we get a look at a specific example of an action earning points, the description is always short, and to-the-point, but apparently we also need a mountain of context too that is never seen in that person's "file." We know that motivation matters, but we've still never seen someone's file mention it. When someone donates to a soup kitchen, we only see "Donated $X to a soup kitchen," not whether they did it out of compassion, to get into heaven, to avoid hell, for self-aggrandizement, or to get laid. And now we know that the effects matter to, except we've never seen "Donated to soup kitchen, only for most of it to go to the manager's salary," or another person getting more Good Place Points because the week they donated, their money went towards a more hungry person.

So why does Mindy St Claire count as the best human in centuries, but not another famous activist? Why does her posthumous legacy count for more that than person?

I bet the coke bender had something to do with it.

IMO the series should end with the judge rejecting Michael's appeals and affirming that, under modern capitalism, every single human being will live a life of moral failure that results in eternal damnation. it then cuts to the Museum of Torture and pans to a sign saying "Greatest Forms of Torture Invented By Humans" and pans across a few like Mustard Gas, Waterboarding, and Internet Shock Porn to reveal the worst thing ever: Capitalism

I don't think the answer was entirely satisfactory; Doug Forcett explicitly structured his life to make sure that he avoided unintended consequences. Edit: Also it really WAS because Chidi kept using almond milk!

I'd wager some of it is stuff like having lived on land that was forcefully taken from the natives hundreds of years ago and helping people who are bad or do bad things. I imagine that merely living in the Americas as a non-indigenous person (and even then) is a defacto point hit because of the consequences of that existence.

They've interacted with the world before, it's just that they constantly refuse to engage with it in any large way after a British admiral kidnapped some of the men to exhibit and possibly other unspeakable things before returning them to their home.

And then a few decades ago, a tanker had crashed on shore and the natives were really eager to murder the gently caress out of the crew. The crew got airlifted out and the natives got a source of metal for their weapons.

"Why let him keep saying mean stuff, right?"

This moment, and Michael's certainty in his rotating hypotheses, is pretty consistent with his S2/S3 shift in character: the demon's grasped that he should do good things to improve his friends' lives, but hasn't quite worked out the specifics. With the squad on the run, he's been frantically pulling metaphorical trolley levers all over the place. And when he kicks Shawn away, the joke is that it loses the group some information they (and we) really wanted to hear.

We're watching this show, so of course we know they'll tear down a new status quo as soon as they finish building one up. And with Schur's love of callbacks, I doubt we'll never see Evil Michael come back out in some circumstance at some point in the (lol) future. But there's no way Michael's currently scamming the gang.

Shawn is an rear end, but I don't blame him for it - if he accepts that Humans are better than he thinks they are, that's a inroad to something potentially very dangerous for him - empathy. A demon who suddenly empathises with his victims isn't going to be as effective at his only job - Michael was only able to cope because he changed his job himself by rebelling against the system. I think his current behaviour trying to psyche out Michael is partially motivated by fear. If the experiment succeeds, his entire worldview is neutered. Trillions of years of torture called into question because what if?

Or Shawn could be a dick because he chooses to be. He seems to enjoy being an rear end in a top hat, not just to humans, but to the demons around him. That's how he is. Trevor seemed to be in the same boat.

The only thing I didn't like about the episode is that wiping Chidi's memories also once again resets his relationship with Eleanor. It's an annoying and common practice on tv to constantly tease two main characters getting together in order to get views and talk among the fans, but never actually going through with it because the writers never know what to do afterwards. So I really hope they actually know what they want to do with the relationship.

It's specifically meant to mess with Chidi. In all other ways, it's an ultimately benign pick.

I sorta have faith in the writers that they'll restore their memories before too long given the pace and nature of the show. Probably by the second or third episode for the next season.
