I was listening to the soundtrack from Day of the Doctor and heard the same song from when 12 breaks the wall. Didn't know they used it so early - it feels so 12 that knowing it actually came earlier feels wrong.

It's like how the "Doomsday" music is very noticeable in "Rose" on rewatches.

Or how the Curator scene uses the music from "Wedding of River Song":

Also, totally unrelated, the Hologram scene in "The Parting of the Ways" is much better scored with the intended music.

Aren't episodes officially going to 50 minutes now? That's only 40 minutes shy of 12x45.

I remember when it was a big thing that Last of the Time Lords got extended to 52. Since then, most episodes have been poking at around 45–47.

The only thing that was unrealistic was the train scene. The lights going off and a bundle of wires attacking you is just a normal day on Northern Rail. :colbert:

Apart from the casting I actually noticed less political correctness pushing in this episode than some of the series 10 stories. The Doctor even allowed her companions to break health and safety rules by climbing up a crane.

I like the implication in Death of the Doctor that before regenerating, the Doctor piloted his TARDIS over the Earth to watch Adric smash into the planet.

The last episode to do as well was “Time of the Doctor”.

The last non-special to do as well was City of Death. Which was helped by ITV being on strike.

She even bagged the number one spot for the week, being the fifth episode to do so after “Journey’s End”, both parts of The End of Time, and “Day of the Doctor”.

It’s also the highest rated New Doctor story ever.

In case you were wondering, the previous record holder was “Rose”, with 10.81m and just below that, Robot with 10.8m.

A final rating in the high eights for The Ghost Monument is both probable and would be a very good result.

Obviously the whole episode was about an anti-racism message. Nothing wrong with that but surely the message would have worked better if it were presented in a more subtle way. Did every single white American have to be utterly racist? Were there not white anti-racists in the US? I seem to recall some of the Mississippi Burnings victims being white.

Final ratings for "The Ghost Monument" put it on a cool 9 million on the dot.

For comparison, the regular episodes to have done better than that since the revival are:
  • "Rose"
  • "Tooth and Claw"
  • "Rise of the Cybermen"
  • "The Runaway Bride"
  • "Partners in Crime"
  • "The Fires of Pompeii"
  • "Journey's End"
  • "The Eleventh Hour"
  • "Deep Breath"
As well as every Tennant and Smith special.

I've softened a lot on that two-parter. It's written by the same woman who wrote Daleks in Manhattan and it has some similar "trying to do too much" going on, but at least it isn't quite so bizarrely badly designed and terrible at understanding its setting. It is really fun to watch the Doctor goad the little tech bro genius, even if all the clone batch stuff is nonsense.

I still think, though, that the RTD years, it's a huge waste to do a Sontaran two-parter and not have the cliffhanger being David Tennant, after stopping the Sontaran fleet, realiize it was a set-up and say "Oh no. Oh no! It's the Rutans!" It's exactly the kind of silly, over-the-top nonsense twist he was so good at making fun.
