I feel like movie critics by and large just don’t know what to do with movies that are cinematic dumpster fires but also wildly entertaining. By pretty much any critical standard, Venom is a real bad movie. The tone is inconsistent, the writing is a mess, the cinematography and score are nothing special, the CGI is shoddy. The only thing I think most people could agree is actually good is Tom Hardy’s performance. It’s a bad movie.

It’s also really loving fun.
