What is Wandersong?

Wandersong is a game that was released on September 27, 2018 for PC and Nintendo Switch. It did get a kickstarter in February of 2016 that was able to raise about $22,000. Since then, it's been in development by three people: Greg Lobanov, the main developer and creator, Em Halberstadt, the sound designer, and Gordon McGladdery (A Shell in the Pit) who was the main composer along with Lobanov. Together, they made a game who's soundtrack consists of over 140 songs, and soundfiles that make up nearly 5 gigs when uncompressed.

The game itself, is about a Bard who goes on an adventure to save the world through music. It functions mostly as a side scroller with mild puzzles and platforming. The gameplay is never intense, and is more a vehicle to explore the rest of the game. The game can play similiar to Night in the Woods, but also definitely has some Earthbound and Undertale inspiration.

Where can I get this game?

As it just came out, this game should be easy to find. But specifically, you can get it on Steam, The Switch, The Humble Store, or GOG.

Cool! So what about this LP? What's the format going to be?

I really agonized over what the best way to present this game is. There's a lot of neat little animations, audio cues, and music that can be difficult to show off through screenshots. However, this is also a text heavy game that really wouldn't go well with video. On top of which, I didn't feel like my commentary through video (audio or subtitle) would provide much to the game compared to screenshot.

Screenshots, however, will NOT get across how great some sections of this game are. There are some things that just need to be seen in motion, rather than through images. As such, it's going to be about as hybrid an LP as I can make it. Screenshots will be for most of the game, but some sections will be placed in video. If I feel a video section translates decently to images, I'll try and provide both.

Why this game?

Because it's a very positive game! As I mentioned before, it can play similar to Night in the Woods, in that you're running around talking to people for most of the game. But where that game can be incredibly real and depressing, this game prefers to try and stay positive and uplifting about as much as it can! That doesn't mean it doesn't know proper pacing or how to tell a story, but just that I feel the game has a positive message. And I want to help spread that. Also the music is utterly fantastic and well worth it on that alone.

Spoiler policy?

Not a single spoiler in this thread. No black bars for spoilers, no tee hee can't wait till x happens. Nothing! This indie game came out about three weeks ago as of this post, and I'd like for people to either check it out themselves, or follow along and see what makes it good!

Update Schedule?

My last LP, I said I was going to try and do a sensible schedule and ended up updating every day. I'd like to not do that again, so I'll try for Monday, Wednesday, Friday and see if that works out. poo poo can change at my whim and at any circumstance though.

Update 1 - The Test

MUSIC: Falling Stars

Welcome to Wandersong! A game I discovered thanks to a friend's recommendation, and gift. I felt like I had a special enough of a time to want to share it with others. Which leads to this LP!

MUSIC: The Sword

So starting off, we're this Bard! He even looks like ye olde medieval bard a bit huh? We seem to be having a dream at this moment, as we went from the main menu straight to here!

Moving is pretty basic on PC. WASD to move, space to jump. I don't know for sure what the controls are like on the switch, but I assume "standard controls" would be a safe bet.

We continue moving upwards and over these ledges. We still aren't sure what we're looking for, but we hope to find it soon!

Oooh, that's probably it!

Alright! Our first weapon!

As the on screen prompt shows, you wield the sword with with the left mouse button. You want to use this to tear down any monster that gets in your way!

After pressing the left mouse button, we can choose the direction we want to wield the sword in. It's somewhat clumsy, but becomes good fun as you have to stab bats in the mid-air while still watching out for goblins on the ground.

Our... hero... is having trouble wielding the sword right now. That's ok! That's just because we haven't grinded enough resources to create a strength potion and increase our muscle density.

Regardless, our hero marches forward to fight the foul beasts of the land!

Wow! This is... uh a big one! Ok Bard, show em what you got! You can do this!

...Uh oh...

Without our sword we can't fight back!! The only thing we can do is sing at her! We are a bard after all...

It seems to be working?

MUSIC: Mysterious Rainbow Girl

You are SO CUTE!!! I'm sorry for scarin you. This was supposed to test if you were a hero... which you're not.

So yeah, we aren't actually the hero who's going to go off and fight some adventure across time, or worlds. We're just a bard who likes singing!

Just a bard! Who are you?

Messenger of the goddess Eya. Forever ago, her song of creation set your universe into motion. And she's gonna sing her song again pretty soon. Which, um... is gonna replace this universe with a new one.

Uh, end of the universe you say?

But don't freak out about it too much, your universe is pretty old. She likes to start over fresh after a while, y'know?

She's acting as if she's getting a new car, or a new appliance! This is the whole universe you're talking about!

This sucks actually. I really like you

And so ends the prologue... with us being told the whole universe is about to stop being a thing! Welp, I hope that hero comes along and solves this for us!

Loving this LP! I was playing through the game myself, but this covers a lot of things I missed completely, like buying thousands of beans. Can't wait for more!

(Side note, I think Ash is non-binary; they're always referred to by gender-neutral pronouns, and their mom calls them "my kid".)

I knew that Ash was supposed to be non-binary, but I could have sworn I saw someone in-game refer to them as he. I went back and... I guess I made that up? Either way, I went back over and changed the pronouns to be gender neutral. There shouldn't be any other gendered pronouns for Ash, but if I missed any let me know.

Also, there may be a part in the future that requires us to create our own... songs. As I am very bad at this and created some hot garbage my first go through, I'm taking any suggestions you guys have. The notes just have to be on the color wheel, so here's a video to demonstrate that if you're unfamiliar with what it sounds like. I'll take any submission, as no submissions means... Count me as one of the people who got this game thanks to the LP! I had a blast with it, even if the singing was a little finicky on the Switch.

Also, I can't remember if OP mentioned it, but whenever you talk to Manny he has voiceclips like "Eyyyy" and "Badabing".

I don't know why that (and the bard snoring) amused me so much, but they did.

Just about everybody in the game has voiceclips or audio cues when they talk, as well as their own fonts in comparison to others. It's really cool, but hard to show off except through video. I've been having to manually rip SFX through the game, which has led to... mixed results. Which has been why I've included dialogue in video clips at times.

fluffyDeathbringer posted:

Not to try to invalidate anyone's reading of the game, but to me, Bard wasn't trying to find Ash's mother to have her speak with them out of selfish desire to have them play with him or because of the universe (he didn't even know they knew the Overseer's Song at the time), but just because he wanted to help them get out of their funk. Although he did show his more savvy and pushy side in the wind land, the Ash encounter read to me as just seeing someone in pain and not being able to let that go without trying to alleviate it.

I was mostly joking when I said that. Bard is a ball of pure happiness. I'd never expect him to have malicious intent at any point. He can be more savvy than he comes off, but he believes in people... to a definite fault.

I bought this game entirely because of this LP - I actually had never even heard about it before. I am now a bit ahead of the LP, currently working on the 3rd Act. I love this game, so thanks for turning me on to it and doing an excellent job with the LP! The work you are putting into it really shows.

You also have shown me some nice little scenes that I missed, for example singing the love song to Frederick to unite the two lovers.

:3:

Thank you! I just really wanted to show this game off to people and act as some marketing for it, since it's really good and deserves a spot in the light. I've tried to show off everything about the game that I can, to the point that there are things coming up that I missed my first time through.

I'd gotten PM'd about this and... forgot to mention it in the thread :v:

Either way, I'm gonna keep watching this LP since you're often seeing stuff I managed to miss in here and I like your commentary.

I've definitely gotten a paper mario vibe from the game, especially with how characters are clearly two-dimensional in how they turn. Glad you enjoyed the game!

So remember how I was insistent on trying to get to Miriam on the first day? That's because you can totally wait a couple days and get different dialogue for her. For completion sake, I also already talked to the astronomer as well, which means Miriam has different dialogue for that as well.

Well lookie who it is!! Do you know how long I've been waiting here? Where were you??

Well, I met an astronomer... who wants to shut down the factory...

SFX: Miriam Angry

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

There's a Hero prancing around killing Overseers! We don't have time for your shenanigans!

Sorry.

Well, while you were busy prancing around... I actually got a lot done for us. I found the Overseer song! So we can skip right to the Overseer of this place.

...There's an Overseer here...?

Uh. Yeah!

Oh!

And get this, the Overseer song? It's the lullaby your mom used to sing to you.

I already know that song!

Yeah, total plot twist, I know.

So I just have to sing it...

That's what I'm saying. Ready when you are.

Singing the song plays out the same way.

Uuuuugh. Are you kidding me... the nexus point is blocked!

...Guess I wasn't useful after all.

Don't be like this right now!!

...

It's probably the disgusting smog in the sky... which means... we have to shut down the factory... So I guess... you were on the right track after all. Ugh. Y'know, just once I'd like to be ahead of the curve.

Sorry Miriam.

Whatever. Just keep doing what you're doing, I guess. I'll wander around as your hapless sidekick.

While a couple of lines were exact copies, most of this dialogue is brand new, and also gives much more explicit hints as to what Miriam is feeling. The game shows flashes of brilliance in the first three acts, but Act 4 is what starts to make the game something that I could stomach putting hundreds of hours of work into an LP for.

Update 34 - The End

It's time to climb our way to the Bell Tower and meet with the Dream King again. We've got the Earthsong almost in its entirety... we just need his piece and we can save the world! But if he dies before we get it... that's The End... for all of existence. So y'know, there's no pressure!

VIDEO: Confronting the Dream King

(Video will cover the whole update if you'd prefer that.)

Last time we made this climb, the Dream Fairy was chasing us and trying to prevent us from waking the Dream King... it's somewhat hard to comprehend what's happened since then.

That uh... doesn't look good... at ALL.

MUSIC: The Dream King

Ugh......

How, uh... how ya doin?

Faaaaaantastic. Definitely not... deteriorating at an alarming rate... still got my winning personality and charm. See?

Mr. Dream King... we really gotta talk!!!

MUSIC: Out of Order

Oh boy. Great.

The Hero is on her way here right now!!! And you're the very last Overseer! If she kills you... that's the end of the world!!!

Ohhhhhh. Wow, really? Thanks. Didn't know that.

SFX: Miriam Angry

GRAARGH, enough with the sass!!! We need the Earthsong from you! BEFORE you're dead!

Give Bard the last piece now!!!

Okay, sure.

YOU WILL???

You know, it almost makes me sad... realizing you will NEVER get it.

Because you won't give it!

I don't mean the Earthsong. I mean...

You've travelled all over the world now. You must have seen yourself... everything is falling apart. Everyone's losing hope.

It's inevitable. Collecting song pieces doesn't matter, and clinging onto the Earthsong... as some kind of easy answer... for all our problems... that's what's sad. This world was over before you even started.

...

That's it? You want to just give up?

On the Earthsong? It's impossible. Everyone and everything are moving apart... always have been. Ever since the universe started. Expanding. Decaying. If the whole world could still act together as one... The End wouldn't have come in the first place.

Look. I don't want it to be over either. I did everything I could to delay it. I broke the rules. But that made everything worse. The world outside turned ugly while I stalled. People are suffering. Making the world go on longer... just isn't natural.

WELP! gently caress!

That was easy!

That's the end then, right? Credits roll! "Thanks for playing!"

SFX: Miriam Angry

YOU!!!!!......

I can't believe you did that, Audrey...

Quit acting so surprised. You both did a great job... getting in my way at every step! But in the long run it was pointless!

You losers never stood a chance. Feels good, to be honest! I almost wish it wasn't this easy...

Eyala told me... about what happened between you.

She didn't lie to you. Did she? She believed in us! If you had just waited... we could have saved the Dream King.

She told you that, huh?

Okay! It's true. In the end, even Eyala turned on me. That's why I ditched her.

Because she was WRONG.

*Sounds of ground rumbling*

VIDEO: It's Happening

MUSIC: The Nightmare

A REAL final boss!

You're insane.

That means... WE STILL HAVE A CHANCE!!! We have to stop her from killing the Dream King!!!

I know that! One last chance. You, me, and a giant evil boss monster... against one lone hero. Pretty good odds, right?

The Dream King still lives! We have to protect him no matter what happens! The world will literally end the moment he dies, and we're the only ones who can stop Audrey... so... no pressure!!!

:siren: :siren: :siren: :siren:
:siren: :siren: MUSIC: Nightmare King :siren: :siren:

So this boss fight... As you know, the gameplay for this game has never been very stellar. It can still be fun, but the game's main focus has been its story and characters. The last boss fight did a bit more with the gameplay and made it pretty fun because of that! So how does this fight compare?

It'd probably rank as one of my favorite gameplay sections from any game, honestly. I thoroughly enjoyed the living heck out of this fight. So what makes it so good? We'll get to that soon... but first, we need to know what our goal is, beyond keeping the Dream King alive.

Audrey will begin charging her sword up, and she will charge it much faster than in the King of Hearts fight. Miriam will launch a spell at her to try and get her to stop, but this will usually fail.

The Dream King will try to attack Audrey by raining down the stars on top of us. We can maneuver these stars by singing in the direction we want them to go. We have to be close to take hold of them, however. Which could mean they land on top of us, if we aren't careful.

Take too long to prevent her from charging up, and she attacks the Dream King. The bar over his head reveals itself as a health bar... and he's already lost a bit of it now.

We can't protect the Dream King forever!

Eventually... she's just gonna win!

...

Steal her sword.

She can't do anything without it!

Steal her SWORD???

That's RIDICULOUS!!!

But okay!!! You focus on distracting her. I'll go for the sword!

Our goal is now to take Audrey's sword away as quickly as we can! The longer we take, the more likely she'll be able to kill the Dream King. So how do we go about distracting her?

As before, the Dream King will send a star down from on high. We need to take this star, and have it hit Audrey.

...Take too long to hit her and she's able to get off her bursts. Audrey does not hold back in this fight! And we need to be prepared to do anything we can to take her down.

We managed to hit her, but also ourselves! Bard takes no damage, like with the rest of the game. But it does take up precious time if he gets hurt. Time for Audrey to continue charging and attacking. If we hit Audrey, it doesn't hurt her, she just has to shield herself from the attack, which lowers her sword.

Get too close to Audrey, and she will just straight up kick Bard. This may seem bad (and to Bard it probably really sucks) but it also counts as a distraction that causes Audrey to lower her guard! So if she's charging too quickly, running into her so she kicks Bard is an absolutely viable strat! If we can distract Audrey for just long enough...

GAH! Almost...

She uh... didn't like that we tried to take her sword away.

Despite being shocked, the Dream King was able to get off his alternate attack - the Dream Roots. They'll grow under him and come up at a certain point, but if we instead start singing, we can take control of them and have them come up whenever we want them to!

If we manage to hit Audrey with them, she'll be stunned and forced to stop charging an attack.

Like with the King of Hearts, Audrey does not have perfect aim and will miss on occasion. I didn't have this happen to me my first playthrough, so it might be just a random chance to happen.

If we're not careful (and spoilers I'm super not careful in this fight), then we can also get hurt by the roots. Just about everything in this fight can hurt Bard too. Poor guy is gonna be sore tomorrow...! If there is a tomorrow...

With less than half his health left, the Dream King begins attacking near constantly, sending down a wave of stars or roots right after each other. Making it a little bit easier to hit Audrey.

Audrey attacked, then did a perfect dodge from the roots. If we were playing as the Hero... that would have been really cool! Instead this is super frustrating and I hate her... stop trying to destroy the world!! :argh:

With the Dream King getting lower on health, I start to rely on the kick strat quite heavily to keep Audrey from continuing to attack. Until we can get the sword from her, the world could end at literally any moment!

Gah!! We can't keep doing this for much longer!!

And I do mean that in the very literal sense!

From this point on, Audrey ups her game by reflecting the stars right back at Bard! These reflected stars can still be controlled, but are much more weighty and even make broken sounds. The stars themselves will no longer work on Audrey, we have to hit her with a broken one to stun her now.

As a broken one will shatter upon being smashed, and will stun her in return.

Of course, we can always let her lower her guard by getting Bard kicked! Bard is literally sacrificing his body for the sake of the universe here.

It's at this point, the fight enters its most chaotic phase. Where roots and stars are coming at a near constant state, and the problem becomes choosing which weapon would be easier to hit Audrey with. As the roots only need to be done once, but are more easily dodged by her. This is my absolute favorite part of the fight as it just becomes a giant clusterfuck in trying to keep the dream king, and the universe, alive for as long as we can.

Bard's pain is everyone else's gain.

If there's no stars or roots and she's charging... Bard gulps as he knows what must come next.

Bard takes an absolute beating in this fight, mostly because of how chaotic everything falling down is, but also because it's usually better to stay where you're going to get hurt if it means getting an attack off on Audrey. If she wins, we all lose.

MUSIC: The End?

Don't move!

You...

Audrey...

You LOSERS!!! Ruining everything!!!

And I actually mean ruining everything! This is my quest! This is MY STORY! EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS is at stake!

How DARE you try to take that for yourself! How DARE you... try to make it about YOU!!!

IT ISN'T!

Audrey!

Uhhhhhh??? Bard, now is NOT the time to try and win her over! Just throw the sword away and talk to the Dream King... Nightmare King... just get the drat piece of song, okay???

What?

I said, you're special! Even if you weren't the Hero, I mean! Audrey, you're super strong... and super smart, and really great at everything you do. I get why you were picked to be the Hero! You deserve it! But... that doesn't mean you have to do it!

...Okay Miriam, listen, just keep the sword away from her, okay? Please... stop staring at Bard...

Being the Hero... is just a title! You can do whatever you want!

I really mean it! Let's stop fighting. If you just give up on doing it your way... maybe you wouldn't be The Hero... but I could learn the Earthsong from the Dream King! And stop the world from ending! We could ACTUALLY save the world! Everyone would be okay!

Did... did it work?

Oh poo poo... MIRIAM!
