Oscar, rule of thumb; your torpedo range is 10nm, and one knot is one nautical mile per hour. So if you're going 10 knots you'll be at the edge of that circle in an hour, vs 5 knots puts you there in two hours. Eyeballing it, your waypoint is around 30nm away.

Here's some ToT info.

If you launch the P-3's immediately they will arrive at Chitose around 0905. (~30 minutes transit time)

At 0912 five (5) Eagles will be available.

Four minutes later all the F-4's and the Eagles can be in the air. (0916)

For this round about all you have to decide is 5 Eagles now, or wait until more Eagles. If 5 Eagles is the go then getting the P-3's to depart this round would make sense.

After the strike package is in the air it will take roughly 1:15 to reach the furthest point the convoy could have traveled. Again, this will vary depending on how close to Iturup you stray.

Be aware there is ~11 MIG-31's and a MIG-29SMT currently on patrol between you and the convoy.

The Eagle crews are waiting. But, as these things go, it can be slow. In roughly 1/2 hour you'll have 5 eagles. In 2:22 you'll have 11 Eagles. That puts you nearly on par with the MIG-31's.

Three subs creep ahead. Well, one creeps, the other two are at 10 knots. Oscar, at the current speed, will reach his target point in 4 hrs.

First Eagles become ready.

MIG front remains stable.

After an hour not much has changed. MIGCAP is still holding south of Iturup. No sighting of the convoy. Oscar is roughly 3 hours to position. Bac is roughly 1:20.

Eagles. 5 are a go. 6 more will become available in 1:22.

Orders by Sunday!

Yeah, it's risky as hell, but I think we're going to want to just use 11 Eagles instead of going in half cocked, since we're only getting one shot at this anyway. That means our P-3s should start taking off in around 50 minutes' time.

Rgr that! I'll have my P-3's ready to launch at +50 minutes. Crews get the last of their coffees and fire up the skillets, lets make some tempura out there!

At the start of our round we'll have Oscar adjusting slightly. Beyond that it'll be P-3's launched in +50 minutes. Yes, this'll be a hour round round. After that you guys can plan the strike.

Oscar adjusts course and heads south at 10 knots.

Three bogeys lift off from Dolinsk Sobol. Course looks to take them towards Iturup. The Patriot battery is still passive and will remain so as the bogeys aren't headed near it.

P-3's are in the air. Headed to Chitose for rendezvous.

:frogsiren: Torpedo!

Oscar goes defensive!

And he's spoofs the torpedo!

But alas his luck does not hold. RIP Oscar Diggs.

Sub Update. Bacs subs are headed for the black sea mount.

The closer sub will arrive in 20 minutes. Further will arrive in 1:30. Both have harpoons loaded (4). Battery power is down to about 20%, but both have full AIP.

Eagles. You'll have 9 available in 12 minutes. An additional pair ready in 22 minutes. Everything else is ready to go.

In order to use a "strike" mission you need a target. I can either manually steer the strike package into the last known direction and, when detected, engage, or you can begin diverting the 767 and get eyes on the hostile fleet.

If possible I'd like to get two E-767s in the air ASAP and headed to these flightpaths, if only one, then GREEN takes priority.

Goddamn I hope y'all have a plan cause this is gonna be tight.

Here is Radio Free Kobold's map of the convoy's predicted path. The time is now 1036, so they are a little over halfway between the 3 and 4 hour mark. When we arrive they'll probably be closer to the 4 hour mark. Plan your aircraft to head for there.

I advise launching at around 1047, when the final pair of Eagles has 10 minutes left to ready--that way they'll be ready to launch just as the final set of already readied aircraft clear the runways for them.

Strike Missions and You!

You guys have two options. One is a patrol area over where you think the convoy is or a strike mission.

By using a strike mission you'll, hopefully, allow a weapons system to be used as optimally as possible.

In this case the aircraft will go at 36k ft, drop down to the deck, and then go back hi before launch. The intention is to hide behind the curvature of the earth from the boats. In this case there is an AEW up so that might be tricky, or even detrimental as your Phantoms get bounced by MIG's.

We can assign Eagles as Escorts and they'll do everything they can to intercept the bogeys and keep the strike package clear.

The other option is set a patrol area with the bound near where the convoy is. The aircraft will transit at altitude and upon sighting convoy fire on it.

In either case specify a generic route. This can be as simple as "directly over Iturup and drat the SAM's!", or "attempt to skirt north-south and avoid the SAM's."

You don't have a ton of fuel in the Phantoms. This loadout is good to 425 nm.

That is a slightly diverted path.

This one diverts to the south.

And that's directly overhead Iturup.

You can do the same for the Eagles. Either we set the patrol area so it follows the Phantoms, or I can keep it so they'll try to clear the skies before the strike.

The P-3's are much slower than the Phantoms as well, so it may behoove you to get them going now and then flights would catch up.

As you look at Yooper's maps, remember that your missiles have range! ~75 miles for the Phantoms, ~35 miles for the P-3s. You don't have to be right on top of the enemy ships to engage them.

F-4 Mission Orders

quote:

TEAM 1 - CALLSIGN SPADE

Total Aircraft: 6 F-4s

Launch after F-15s. Strike Mission on projected location of convoy, course correct when Convoy is identified. Take South Diversion route. High-Low-High. Cruising Speed at 36K. 100nm Dash. Engage at Maximum Distance, dump all available ordnance. Form up and return to base at 20k ft.

TEAM 2 - CALLSIGN JOKER

Total Aircraft: 2 F-4s

Launch after SPADE. Patrol Mission with engagement zone 100nm North, 50nm South, and 100nm East of the NE tip of Iturup. Patrol zone is around the 300' mark on the North Diverted Path. Cruise at 36k to patrol zone.

If targets spotted in engagement zone: Dive and Dash, unload missiles, return to base.

The idea is to form a main strike force and a reserve to hit anything that gets through... or at least have a shot at getting them if they got spooked and diverted North around the island.

I am okay without an escort for the reserve force, or a minimal escort to keep the enemy honest.

I'm thinking the southern divert for the P-3's will be the best bet since if we have to dance with SAMs I won't have as much of a chance as the Phantoms.

P-3's are headed north and will link up with the Spade Strike Mission. The Eagles will launch prior and sweep the area of hostiles aircraft. The two remaining Soryu's will fire once ASM's are inbound. Taint is bringing one 767 to the east and a second is to launch and go north of Hokkaido.

We go until the strike is complete.

The three bogeys from Dolinsk are now EMCON active. No surprise, SU-27's.

2nd AEW launches.

Eagles are almost ready. As soon as the 7 minute Eagles are ready we'll start launching.

Bac picks up a skunk. A second later it's classified as a Commercial Ferry, 1,900 DWT.

More skunks are detected.

A bogey pops up, 55 knots, 1000 ft. Likely helicopter of some sort.

This is it. Eagles are launching.

:frogsiren:

Once these folks are in the air we'll get the strike mission launched.

The AEW is far enough east to detect the convoy. They are 20 nm from destination. This is going to be close.

Eagles are in the air! Phantoms will go up shortly.

Phantoms have launched! Joker Patrol is headed north while Spade is headed to the south.

Simultaneous goblin and vampire?

There's a loving hero. Val Helmethead leads the Phantom strike. This gentlegoon has been waiting. For 3 months. 3 months. To launch this loving strike. Goonspeed.

Uh oh.

:frogsiren:

Torpedo on North Bac's Soryu!

Spoofed!

RIP Bac. I tried to bring him to depth to get off a batch of Harpoons but wasn't able to in time.

(about now is when I checked Discord and saw his refined orders. Oops. His other sub will now come to depth and fire harpoons at the nearest contact.)

Harpoons away!

They'll have to dive through a bunch of SAM's!

Two die before the third goes live. A moment later both are dead. All 4 Harpoons were intercepted.

Eagles begin firing on the Flankers. A moment later the Flankers return fire!

Tons of missiles in the air. On both sides. To the south it appears that a flight of MIG's is detaching and headed for the P-3's.

Scratch one Eagle. Two more follow suit but a Flanker is hit.

MIG-31's are firing on Jimmy's flight. A pair of Eagles are racing to intercept.

One more Flanker is down. The Eagles are still hunting.

P-3's are in trouble.

In the wave of missiles every single P-3 falls from the sky.

RIP Jimmy.

But the Eagles are firing back.

Just as the Eagles are about to sweep the sky the SAM battery opens up!

Right now there is 3 Eagles near Iturup and a pair avenging Jimmy.

Gun run! gently caress yah!

But on the downside... it's a Gargoyle.

11 nm.

The Gargoyle seemed to have waited until the Eagles were on top to engage. It took one Eagle down, one more is evading.

The southern Eagles knock out all 6 of the MIg-31's. A line of missiles stream towards the Phantoms though...

The last northern Eagle succumbs to the Gargoyle.

The missiles pass harmlessly behind the Phantoms.

The Phantoms approach. Two Eagles remain. Only a single MIg-31 is between the Phantoms and the ships.

But the convoy is almost there...

Val Helmethead is the first to launch his payload!

One of the Eagles went in for a gun run on a Bear and discovered it has a tail gun!

First Harpoons claim a Grisha.

5 of the 6 Harpoons are intercepted but one makes it through!

This same thing happens over and over as SAM's intercept the incoming Harpoons. Only two remain.

To add insult to injury Bac is hit by a torpedo and has sustained serious damage. A moment later another torpedo drops and detonates.

RIP Bacaruda.

Then his first torpedo strikes DandyWalken in an MPK, sinking it.

All of the ASM's are intercepted. Only Bac's errant torpedos continue toward targets.

Next the Metel is struck.

Then a ferry.

And a dud! Japan, of all nations, creator of the Long Lance, has a dud.

Another torpedo takes out the KP-19!

RIP another ferry!

RIP another ferry, the Kharon.

RIP the KP-62!

RIP the KP-35.

But boats remain.

Eventually the delapitated convoy limps into the coastal waters of Iturup.

As valiant as the JDF fought, the troops landed on Iturup settled the issue. Moscow can claim a victory while the newly resurgent nationalist elements in Japan are being driven from power.
