Fairly sure the Alex guy is a traditional artist. Feel free to correct me if otherwise.

The company is known for not paying talent.

Not the first time it's been said, been happening long before AI.

Apologies for being unclear, I meant a hypothetical AI "artist" who'd probably also not be getting paid if Valiant's refusing to pay for actual work.

If that's the only poo poo you've bought from people who turned out to be predators, consider yourself lucky. I have commissioned art from artists I later found out were ultra chuds and at least one piece where the artist was later outed as a predator. I've waited in long lines for the privilege of telling them how much I admire them and to get poo poo signed by a couple predators. It's a really icky lovely feeling but a) i didn't know at the time and b) i've already wasted the currency (either time or money) so i can't undo that, i just don't associate with that person anymore.

Ethan Van Sciver. Before I knew what a neo-Nazi adjacent POS he was, I met him once at an Orlando MegaCon and had him sign the Green Lantern issue he drew where the Tattooed Man killed a guy Geoff Johns named after me (from when I posted on Geoff's old message boards 20 years ago).

Yup.

I have some old sketches from Dave Sim, a bunch of pages from Mark Martin's Mirage TMNT stuff (he's super-rightwing, went to January 6th then wound up in a mental hospital because he went full Q Anon), piece Barry Blair did for me because he was a fan of the first game I worked on years ago and I had no idea he was a well known abuser, and some Dale Keown doodles on a Tiger-X TPB. Oh, and of course like a DOZEN books signed by Ed Piskor. I'm sure there's more pain lurking in my collection as time progresses.

I still have all of it, but it's locked away because I honestly don't know what the hell to do with it. I should probably just slap a padlock and one of these on it, then bury everything in the goddamn desert.

I mean, don’t feel bad about it, you’re not responsible for other people’s insanity or shittiness. Sure don’t display it if you want, but I also think displaying old art isn’t a tacit endorsement of their beliefs. Most people would just seen a cool picture of the TMNT.

My old roommate had a photo on her dating profile featuring our apartment/shared bookshelves featuring a complete run of Cerebus phonebooks, and at one point started getting some messages from people who were very impressed that she'd read all 300 issues of Cerebus and I had to explain what a red flag that was. We've both since moved and the Cerebus has been moved to a lower/less prominent place of display.

Though thinking about the history of comics (and literature, and journalism, and music, and really anything) I feel like a careful scan of any photo of anyone's sufficiently media-stuffed apartment is going to display some dubious creators.

I had a bad feeling even back around 2004, when Green Lantern was DC's hottest book that made Johns and Van Sciver into A-list superstars. Back then, Van Sciver's now ex-wife Sharis was a prolific poster on Johns' message boards, and I always remember how she once interjected into some random, unrelated conversation that she wanted to hold up Phyllis Schafly, of all people, as a strong female role model for her kids. That was so odd and off-putting, I never forgot it. Was she the person who put Ethan on his path to the far right?

Then there was a convention where Van Sciver and Mark Waid teamed up to confront and publicly discredit Rob Granito, an artist who was an infamous, shameless swiper and tracer of other, better-known artists. I forgot who called them this -- possibly Ethan himself -- but whoever it was said something about the biggest bleeding heart liberal in comics and a guy who is practically a Nazi finding common ground in calling out this talentless hack and thief.

I had no clue about Sharis, and I definitely remember her. I spoke with her a few times on the forum itself. She always came off nice and quiet. I figured she was the dutiful wife watching her husband succeed at the time, had no clue about her view points. When Ethan really started to go off the rails one of the first things I thought was that, she must be stuck in a horrible relationship and hoped she was able to get free of it. If it turns out she was the cause of Ethan going down that rabbit hole, that's a twist I didn't see coming.

I did know Ethan was a supporter of the right, not sure why but I definitely got that impression at the time. I’m fairly sure he went to the staff once to complain about someone’s view point about something that was going on. I can’t recall what. I do remember people were always uncomfortable with Sinestro’s look, it resembled you know who and he confirmed it was based off him. That was always off putting, if only we knew what was to come.

The situation about the artist that was selling copies of famous artist work and signing them as himself was such a mess. What caused the whole confrontation was someone had passed, Mike Wieringo? Might have been someone else. And the guy had ripped off his artwork, had signed and was selling it as his own at cons. It was a step too far at the time and the whole event unfolded.

Their channel got me way more into comics especially the year before and the first year of the pandemic. I hope anyone involved seriously reflects and changes their behaviour moving forward, and I also hope that the videos aren’t completely lost. There was an enormous amount of good stuff on that channel, some really great interviews and spotlights on stuff I’d never have heard of without them.

t's just that when I heard that he'd tried to capitalize off Dwayne's death, that was the last straw for me. I saw red and stormed over with Ethan. We were both livid. I told Fraudboy in no uncertain terms that I will personally contact every convention there is and warn them not to give him a table if they ever want to see me or MY friends there, EVER. I also screamed at him when he said "Well, truthfully--" that he is not allowed to use that word, ever, ever. That word means nothing coming from him.

I believe my exact endquote, two hours before the show closed, was, "Make your money here, because this is your last convention. Do you understand me? This is your last show." That's right, I was so pissed, I unilaterally appointed myself Sheriff of All Comicons. I should have a badge made.

I think my favorite moment was when this kid said to Ethan--after lying when asked if he'd actually claimed to have worked with Dwayne (a claim he ABSOLUTELY made)--"I just considered him a friend, same as I'd consider you a friend--" and Ethan growled "Let's make this clear: I am NOT YOUR FRIEND."
