I've been hearing about fights with libraries for years and years. They are (usually) good for fighting it.

I did once walk into a Barnes and Noble and they had a table labeled "Banned Books" and selling tons of things that have been fought over for years (eg, Catch-22). Was super happy to see them doing that.

My store has a table for that and we keep running out of Maus and having to buy more. In a way, it getting banned in a single school district was really good for it.

To be clear it getting banned was still bullshit, but it gets eyes on the book and people go to read it

I'm trying to think of any live action superhero, where the actor being completely ripped has ever made a positive difference to me. Perhaps Captain America should be in peak physical condition, but other than that I don't get any extra enjoyment out of it.
Just as a Tom Cruise movie isn't actually better because he does his own stunts, it may actually make them worse.

The scene in Captain America where he comes out of the syrum machine totally buff and the lady trembles as she goes to touch his pec is…

Look it was worth it.

They've largely switched to original stuff, with a little bit of licensed IPs. I'm not sure who owns the original work - if it's creator-owned, Dark Horse-owned or some combination.

Have they? Most of their sales comes from Avatar tie-ins and Berserk. Their other big sellers of 2022 were Minecraft and Critical Role books

I saw this too! He apparently also hates comics

Some not great stuff about Iron Circus Comics/its owner, Spike. Interpersonal/management issues but also she hasn’t been paying people.

So, this year’s Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work went to Flung Out of Space, a biography of Patricia Highsmith, an early comics writer who was an open lesbian who went on to write one of the first lesbian novels with a happy ending. Just, she was a racist. And not a racist that was of the times, she was on record saying that she thought that the Holocaust didn’t go far enough. And this never is depicted in the book.

It’s extremely disappointing that the Eisners rewarded the creators.

(Also Shuna’s Journey shouldn’t have won Best International Work—Asia because while it’s a wonderful picture book it isn’t a goddamn comic and I will die on this hill)

Are there alternate reviews you’d point me to?

Not a review per se but this thread is a comics fan with a good knowledge of comics history reading through the book and commenting on it.

He’s Jewish and he notes that they really tone down her bigotry and go out of their way to make her look cool.

Edit: for those who don’t want to use Twitter (understandable) one of his criticisms is that she never uses any language stronger than “Jewish” when talking about Jews. This is a lady who called the Holocaust the Semicaust because she didn’t think it killed enough Jews. It’s a major whitewashing considering the level of bigotry she espoused in her real life

What do you mean by “early comics writer”? I’ve read a few of her novels but also Devils, Lusts and Strange Desires a biography and I don’t think there’s anything mentioned. It’s been awhile but I think I’d remember that. Also, hoooly poo poo I knew she had a reputation for being kinda terrible but didn’t realize just how much of a miserable hateful pile poo poo she was til I read that. Killed any interest in reading more of her stuff.

She wrote a lot of comics for hire during the 1940s. She loving hated that she made comics; she really felt like she was slumming it. To be fair, comics writers were widely looked down upon at the time

Do we have any idea what? I know most comics work was uncredited back then, but I’d be kinda interested. Piece of poo poo or not she wrote pretty drat well. If I recall from the biography they just mention freelance work in New York, like ad copy and puff pieces for women’s magazines and whatnot, but nothing about comics. Going to the library tomorrow anyway, I’ll see if they have it.

You can check her Wikipedia page. Looks like lots of all types. War comics, westerns. biographies, some super hero stuff. No characters I recognize though

Webtoons is pushing some really bad contracts. Basically "we'll throw you a couple grand and we own everything" kind of deals.

Yeah, Webtoons is pretty lovely. There’s also historically been some conflicts between the creators and the website about advertising (even mid-tier popularity series barely get advertising on the website) and they pay their translators pretty poorly, too
