There were min/max hardcore players but they never pulled any harassment (or mean gaming horseshit on the kids) because not only did I not put up with that poo poo and had it spelled out in my house rules, but the shop manager and workers didn’t either. The manager had no qualms kicking guys out of the store who made nasty remarks (for example: making fun of a costumed overweight women on a packed weekend event night with a huge line of people watching) or intimidating would-be creeps to the point of their not returning to the shop. In retrospect my games actually helped some awkward nerds make friends and I think even a couple formed out of it. But yeah, it was absolutely doing the work in our space to say “hey, bad behavior will NOT be tolerated” that kept it out. And in all honestly this was years before I recognized my own personal issues and I STILL managed to help make a fun, positive space to play games and socialize in. BENGHAZI 2 posted:Thank you! One of the worst things Wizard seared into my brain was from one of their monthly top 10 heroes list. Caitlyn Fairchilde of Gen 13 was usually in the upper half while the book was popular (and when virtually no other female characters ever made the list) but someone thought a positive assessment was how she was sooooooo different from most heroines who were described as “oh no Cap’n Baddin tied me to the deflowering machine, eek!”

The pushback was enough for DC to change the cover, and of course chuds screeched censorship. I don’t remember what the changes were. I do think you could have done the exact same pose but changed Batgirl’s expression to be angry and annoyed - something that communicates she’s over Joker’s poo poo, unafraid of him, and the next 28 pages are her kicking his rear end in classic bat-fashion the average person would expect from a bat-book. I think someone even photoshopped the cancelled cover to that effect to demonstrate how the change in expression communicates a very different story.

Over ten years ago I overheard retailers chatting about EVS but making what at the time felt like typical dudebro remarks of "well it's his wife you REALLY have to watch out for," with her being the one that was supposedly more strict, more uptight, more conservative. Obviously what I overheard was rumor and opinion coming from guys who worked directly with the couple via conventions and signings, but I think back to that as I watch EVS carry out what's essentially grooming and terrorizing content for his dwindling but fanatic followers to lap up and wonder how complacent the rest of his family is.

Cyberfrog iirc was his original comic from the 90s, just one more indie book in a sea of same. I figured he pushes that because it’s his own IP and because he has no capability of coming up with anything else, plus he can twist the language of indie publishers by presenting his own work and “creator’s rights.”

Vic is related however tangentially because it’s an example of what’s happened at comic and anime conventions for the last 20+ years I’ve attended them finally getting caught and maybe even facing consequences for being a creep and a sex pest. Somehow, despite not being a FMA/anime fan, I “knew” Vic was a creep before all this went public. I can’t tell you exactly when I learned that, but at some point over a decade ago when I was volunteering someone gave me a heads-up to avoid the guy. And over time as social media grew I began to see people chatter about it. Vic was always a presence at comic shows, often a headlining guest, as anime got more and more popular, and he went to a lot of shows. That’s a lot of fans. And that’s as much as I want to think about it.

Another huge Planetary fan who has to seriously weigh getting rid of my absolute editions, tpbs, single issues, and all the other Ellis one-offs like Apparat, Ministry of Space, etc. I usually don’t have issues cutting off creators revealed to be poo poo as if they didn’t exist, but a bit oof on this one. Unsurprised, although I figured Ellis was just a crotchety flirt, not a career-impacting sex pest (or worse).

Clearing out my Ellis TPBs I came across collections of his essays and early blog posts from 95-01, including the “Old Bastard Manifesto” where he says “I’m part of the problem, gently caress you.” I’m not going to take the time to reread and pick apart 20+ year old bloviating for more evidence of awful behavior (he seems to mostly rag on and on about superhero books and the state of the industry) but bull-loving-poo poo at his claim of not knowing the power and influence he wielded when Transmetropolitan AND Planetary were current AND he was pointing out how he co-owned the latter.
