Also, what specific clue did I miss that let you distinguish between the carpenter and his mate?

The carpenter’s mate was one of the last I got. The carpenter is shown in the carpenter’s area fairly often and you hear him speak in an American accent once or twice, so I didn’t have too much trouble with him. But somehow I got the impression that the other black guy who isn’t Hamadou is the mate - I think maybe he is shown in the carpenter’s area once or twice or otherwise shown hanging out with the carpenter? Not until the very end did I realize that was wrong. There’s a scene in Soldiers of the Sea where the mate gets spiked and the carpenter is there and he calls the carpenter “boss” that eventually cleared it up for me.

Because that was marked one triangle, and I couldn't resolve it until close to the end of the game.

The hammock numbers again--or rather, he's the only Indian seaman who doesn't get a hammock number there.

You might want to check the rigging, that's where the topmen work, and looking up and outside the decks is generally good policy in The Doom. Also note the sword in the tattooed man's death scene that he dropped.

You're both right. The Formosans had only one shell in their possession. The others were captured with the mermaids; when they attack Nichols and his merry men in Chapter IV, you can see two of them wearing shells in their hair.

That explains the source. The question left is whether the mermaids' shells are anywhere near as important as The Shell, which I think they aren't.

The hammock numbers help. Three of the hammocks are occupied and the fourth is empty, so I inferred the man standing over the invalid was the one who occupied the empty hammock.

Is that the one Where the doctor says that he's seen worse? From memory his name is mentioned in the dialog

That one took me aaaaaages to get right because I assumed it was linked directly to the previous scene, instead of there being a scene missing where the dismemberment happened and that that was what the steward was being lead away for.

If it rises around the mizzen mast, like on the Obra Dinn, it is the famous poop deck.

Mark Brown's video on detective games is really interesting and has a few recommendations.

Her Story doesn't play like Obra Dinn mechanically but it does have the same feel where you are given a lot of freedom to piece together clues without any real hand-holding. You are given a series of videos taken from interviews with a witness in a murder case, and have to work out what happened and why. All you can do is find new videos based on keyword searches.

I got my first 3 Fates pretty easily, but I have 4-5 I have "done" right now that I'm pretty certain of. Yet I'm not getting another sequence/lock in.

Is this just the game telling me I got them wrong, or when they get paired in 3's, do they have to be somewhat related to each other?

I just finished this last night, and whoo boy, I felt like a detective by the end of it. My biggest problem was the stewards and the chinese topmen. I eventually was able to figure out which topman was which by their shoes while they were hanging in the hammocks after getting one right using the hammock number. I love the fact that the creator took the time to put in tiny details like that, otherwise I would have gone insane trying to finish the puzzle. The 2nd mate's steward and the captain's I narrowed down by uniform but the 2nd mate's steward cause of death was totally bs, he should have died from bleeding out. In the last chapter, am I right in assuming Evans didn't give you the details of what happened in the lazerette upfront to make sure the East India Company didn't fine the hell out of the people involved?

Two I'm really frusterated by, and then a question.

Lim was bitten by a beast. What do I even put as a cause of death. I tried eaten but that seems to be for cannibalism which this isn't. It's also obviously wrong since it didn't take from that.

Tattoo guy I'm assuming he's the Bosun's Mate, what with the conversation you hear around the Mutiny bit. "What happened to my Frenchmen." "He got ripped in half by the Squid.". But that's not taking either.

Should I be looking for people ripped in half by the spiderbeasts here? The way that sentence was said made it sound like the tentacles killed him. Or maybe I need to rewatch the Doom fight for other people ripped in half.

Lastly what's the tell for people who escaped?. Just kinda guess by what is nearby?

With the way they had to leave, they definitely didn't have any money left for passage on another ship. Besides, if they go back then the East India Company charges them with Boat Crimes and throws them in jail gaol.

The Obra Dinn was bound for the Orient; presumably none of the passengers planned on returning to England any time soon, even before disaster struck.

It does look like she’s about to be bitten but she’s already bleeding and done for at that point, there’s a wound description that lines up better with what has visibly happened to her

The bosuns mates fate is only described by the bosun’s own death scene. The cause of death is correct, you’ve just misidentified him. People who disappeared can have any number of fates, it just means there’s no corpse for them and you have to derive their fate another way, often by their last living appearance which suggests their imminent death

ive been playing with magnuts tying to change the wold as we know it

I really loved this game. It's such an accomplishment and must've taken ages to diagram out and think on before actually putting it all together.

The one part of the game that took a big chunk of time to figure out and I still can't wrap my head around is (spoilers are regarding a guy missing a leg being helped at the bottom of a stairwell) I don't know if I'm missing something here or if this is left intentionally vague. I had to replay these scenes again and again because the scene at the bottom of the stairwell takes place a minute or two after the previous scenes of the men tripping down the stairs. For a while I listed that the guy with the missing leg had broken his ankle on the fall down the stairs and had to have his leg removed. Then I realized that the stairwell he's at the bottom of is on the opposite end of the ship and down one level from the one he fell down. In addition, his foot is at the opposite end of the boat from where his scene occurs. I eventually figured out that the Captain's Steward had attacked his leg (I think I listed "torn apart by") but I have no idea how or why this went down. There's a blood trail from the other end of the boat to where the guy is found but none of the preceding scenes let you get a good view of the area where his leg is found. Did I miss something here that better explains this? I marked it down in the book but still had no idea why it happened. I understand that he was trying to prevent the poo poo that was on the ship from staying on the ship but I don't follow why that one seaman got so viciously attacked.

TonySnow
Mar 24, 2008
Probably just a guard on the lazarette. Captain mentioned throwing the steward in there with those "things" so the mermaids were probably already in there and the seaman was guarding the door. I put him down as killed by sword and got it correct. I think there was more time in between scenes then you may think.

So I'm stuck. Two left, I know them for certain, but uh.

I have technically 4 left. Third Mate, 2nd Mates Steward, Ship Steward, and Captain's Steward.

Third Mate and Captain's Steward I know exactly who they are. Captain's Steward was brought to the Lazarette and I can't see him at all, so I assume he's Epilogue.

Third Mate doesn't have a death, and I can't do anything with him. Again I assume Epilogue.

So it's 2nd Mates Steward and Ship Steward.

I assume 2nd Mates Steward went along on the Calling. I see his death. He's been stabbed in the neck by Sia, then thrown overboard. I have put stabbed and drowned by Sia, no dice.

Ok then, so my other person is Ship Steward. Only other person on the ship it could be is the guy who got spiked in a hallway. So I attached that to him. No dice.

I've swapped them just in case. Fiddled with potential deaths ( maybe he got speared by the beast! maybe he got speared by Sia! ), and no dice.

Am I just not able to get these two, and need to go back on the boat? If so this isn't telegraphed at all.

That motherfucker.

I'm kinda annoyed because the gunshot sound happens way earlier then it sounds like it should, so I never attached it. I spent a solid 4-5 minutes on every scene in that bit, until I finally was walking back up along the hallway and saw it.

Good game. Literally my only complaint is the Chinese are a mess to figure out. Every other group made sense, but I never got their trigger.

English/Scottish/Irish were just a matter of rank/how they dressed/what they did in various battles, which pegged it down quite a bit. I boiled it down until I had the Purser/mutiny Knife guy/balding guy who died with Wolff by the cannons, then I just correctly deduced that the Purser would be leaving with the books.

Russians were simple, one was a Topman, the other two died together. Just found a guy I knew 100%, then swapped their names until it worked.

Indians were also largely easy, once I learned the tagging. One is named, his buddy is tagged while asleep, the other two are a Topman/Seamen so it was just seeing them in their work roles.

But the Chinese I basically just bruteforced. I couldn't see any of them near/around the tagging. None of them ever say their names. They all have the same job. I felt like I missed something here.

Well well, mister fancy-pants, I hope you're wearing your matching sweater today, or you'll be cut down like the ugly tree you are.
I identified the Purser via the scene in the port walk during the crab beast fight. If you head down the walk there's a hole where you can peek into the Purser's office, and he's in there.

I love how there are so many ways to identify the higher-rank people that are all correct.

I was able to find out one of the Chinese by matching him to the cot that he was sitting near in one of the scenes. The rest though, I had to brute force, though brute forcing 3 men (6 possibilities) is a lot more doable than 4 (24 possibilities).
