the ones i saw were 720p and if they were upscales, they sure looked great! but then again, all i can compare it to are .rm files and central park media(?) VHS tapes. the movies in Actual HD look fantastic, too

Wow. It's been a long time since I've thought about my username. Yea, it's a Slayers reference.

I had some time so I went and finished Try. The episodic filler nonsense episodes were perfectly solid but the main plot was a little weak. It took too long to get going in the first half then Valgaav disappeared for most of the back half.

Watched the first episode of Revolution and am glad to see "being Lina Inverse" is still a crime.

At the very least I’d take a movie/special. But yeah, with the novels starting back up again a little while back a new anime revival isn’t out of the realm of possibility. We’ll see of course.

So I’ve been rewatching this series lately (this time in English), and out of curiosity why did Ameila’s dub actress suddenly get swapped out after episode 13?

Also why is it that the series and the movies/specials were handled by two different dubbing companies (though interestingly Crispin Freeman still voices Zell in both).

This is why I watch the subs.

I’ve already seen the whole series subbed but the dub was actually my first exposure to the franchise and I just felt like revisiting it.

While the original is better the dub’s honestly not that bad to be fair (though Veronica Taylor was a much better choice for Ameila than her first english VA), particularly in the case of Lisa Ortiz as Lina and the woman they got to play Naga in the movies/specials.

What I really like about Slayers is the lyrics of all the songs are positive and uplifting. Going through the show and the books really feels like going through an adventure. There's nothing about trying to level up or going to guild houses and doing quests. They go around and get into situations and meet strange people and solve/not solve problems.

I think someone here once described the show as D&D: The Anime, which sounds about right to me.

To that end, why was the show divided into seasons as opposed to just being one continuous series? Since it’s mostly just random adventures this seems like the kind of show you could probably just keep going with forever if you wanted to.

Though as mentioned, they are supposed to be making an announcement this March regarding the 30th anniversary of the series so hopefully a new anime will be on the way before too long.

Stories can go on forever, budgets can't.

around ep13ish, Central Park Media stopped production for a year. when they resumed, the original VAs for Zelgadiss and Amelia didn’t return CPMs calls and were ostensibly busy with other work. Crispin Freeman doesn’t come in until ep 18 and that was the next appearance of Zelgadiss after the hiatus. Daniel Cronin was the original VA.

this kind of goofy poo poo is part of why old weebs don’t care for dubs.

Eh, in this case I think Freeman and Taylor were better choices for the roles anyway (though in Zell’s case I don’t really notice that big a difference between the voices).

The voices they got for Gourry and Amelia in Slayers Premium weren’t bad either for that matter (Ortiz is the superior English Lina though). In fact, I kind of wish we’d gotten a chance to hear more of Luci Christian’s Amelia to be honest.

So what is everyone's ranking for the Slayers movies? Mine is the following

1. Slayers Return
2. Slayers Gorgeous
3. The Motion Picture
4. Great
5. Premium (Which sucks btw fight me)

1. Motion Picture
2. Return
3. Gorgeous
4. Great
5. Premium (I did like that everyone was in it, but 25-30mins is not enough)

You could probably interchange Return and Gorgeous every now and again. In general I liked the Top 3 a lot and can rewatch at any given time. Great and Premium were weaker entries. The OVA's were also awesome.

Also in regards to the latter, what was the point of bringing Naga back if she only had two lines and never actually interacted with anybody?

This “movie” is also just barely longer than your average episode, Amelia randomly disappears near the end and we don’t see her again until the closing credits.

Dubbed was all they had for El Hazard, which turned out to be fortuitous because that dub rules.

Seconded. Wasn’t a huge fan of Amelia’s original English VA either for that matter (though the voice she had in Premium was pretty good) so this change was probably for the best anyway.

Interestingly enough, despite it being done by the same company that handled the other films/specials Freeman was the only actor that wasn’t recast in the Premium dub for whatever reason.
