Does any decent quality exist of the stuff where she's with Naga? I remember trying to watch all of Slayers way back since it was my introduction to anime and my favorite thing ever since I was also into D&D at the time, but nearly everything I found was like 240x120 real media format crap that was barely watchable.

I'm always bummed out there wasn't like a goofy mock Dragon Quest video game for Slayers. Or at least one that released in the West. I'd love to make a Create a Character that just gets roped by Lina into a disastrous cavalcade of stupidity across the land.

I know this might not be much consolation, but most of the Slayers games that came out are fairly decent. Never played the PS One game, though.

There is a SNES Slayers game that got a romhack translation. The story ends up pulling one over you too.

Don't read it you don't mind a bit of spoiling:
While the game starts you out as Lina Inverse, you start off strangely weak and everyone comments on this, but it turns out you are a Lina clone and the real Lina is max level wrecking havoc around the countryside while you do the mainplot. So you can eventually team up with Lina as Lina. It's great.

I forget how Evolution-R ended but given the setup of the show and the fact that I don't believe any of the main characters besides maybe Zelgadis have a specific end goal in mind they could honestly just keep this concept going forever if they wanted (I still kind of want to see at least one more season at any rate).

Hey so elephant in the room but can we talk about, you know, the other thing with slayer in the name? I mean normally I'd :justpost: because we're all adults here and nobody gets up in arms about brutal violence in their media but it's also kind of explicitly pornographic so I can see why there might be an issue.

Assuming there's even anything to talk about, that is. i mean it's not exactly well-known (i wouldn't even have heard of it if it wasn't for Gen Urobuchi's name being attached)

I wouldn't call Ninja Slayer explicitly pornographic just because it's animated by Trigger.

Xellos is the underling of one of Shabranigdu's five retainers. Since Shabranigdu is basically sealed and has been for some time, what his retainers are up to is their business and their business alone. Zelas (Xelloss' master) herself has never quite made an appearance in the series proper, but she seems content with letting her underling run amok and do wild, chaotic poo poo.

he was one of the mazoku priests, who were just below the generals. i don't think the general he worked for ever showed up? maybe they were in the notorious illustration in the last book.

xellos wasn't conflicted or anything; he was dedicated to reviving shabranigdu and destroying the world like any other mazoku. he was just focused on big grandiose plans toward that end instead of killing lina, which is something he was definitely capable of doing at any time.

Are the novels still going? I know one came out just recently but I don't know for sure if the series has been officially ended/abandoned just yet.

Regardless, there's still probably enough material out there for another season or two of anime content should they ever feel like coming back to it at some point (or even just flat out make something up like they did with Try). Though on that note, how well did the series actually do in Japan?

There hasn't been any mention of the 16th volume being the final volume, so there is probably going to be more novels coming out. Also, the latest novel got immediate reprints, so its presumably doing really well.

Good, hope that means an anime revival is in the cards at some point as I really want to see more of this series. Also as far as I can remember both the Japanese and English voice casts are more or less equally good in this regard.

Since we're on the subject of D&D, one thing I do find interesting in the setting of GS, if not the show itself, is Truth and Illusion, and how they represent a lovely DM and a good DM respectively.

Some context, since they aren't present in the anime or manga, Truth and Illusion are the two big 'Gods' of the setting, there are other deities that roll at the metaphysical table, but they're the ones who hold the keys.

Truth is a bad DM, he revels in the deaths of adventurers facing overwhelming, unfair odds. He wakes up the demon lord and ups the Goblin population because misery and suffering are what makes him think of a 'fun' game. He gets a kick not just out of the deaths of adventurers but watching them struggle through his unfair bullshit. Ultimately he's not hosting the game for the players, he's hosting the game for him. He's bullshit to be around but he owns the store, and it's the only store in town, and literally, no one else wants to GM, and if anyone tries he inserts himself into the game... You've all played with this fuckwit once if you've sat a table. They make you want to not play the game. He's the guy who whispers to the players "Hey, I'll give you more rewards if you look all the treasure before the party gets there, or you stab them in the back."

Illusion is the opposite, a good DM. She believes that fun is to be had when a well-balanced party, has a well-balanced adventure, against a well-balanced challenge, that they get an adequate reward from. She wants the adventurers she champion's to be having fun. She wants their fates to be happy and genuine and exciting, She throws festivals and doesn't believe she's doing a good job unless people are having fun.

The Gods don't actually directly control anyone, this is not a game, they made this world, and they are essentially the twin controllers of fate for those who inhabit it. Anything that doesn't have a reasonable explanation like... Why was suddenly a super difficult quest, why was there a beholder and poison traps and horrible things that shouldn't be fought by a level 1 party? That's Truth's direct interference.

The God's can choose to champion an inhabitant of the world, Illusion first wants to champion Priestess, and then moves on to Chosen Heroine... because, in the first episode/quest/whatever, she rolled a 1 on the Dice of Chance that dictates the fates of those you choose to champion. Which is... the in-story actual reason why the first party got TPKed.

I don't know why this info, which provides... a lot of context, isn't in the anime or manga. They mention the Gods as people rolling the dice, but a lot of people think GS and etc. are people at the table, and this is a game. No, it's just Gods treating people's lives like their game. I don't think this info would change anyone's mind, if you found it distasteful before, like... it doesn't make it more tasteful. I just found the concept neat, because I myself haven't really seen a similar idea, since the Animorph books Crayak and Ellimist.

Now, back to Slayers talk... You know I don't think I've actually had a chance to really experience Slayers outside of clips and screen grabs. I've experienced RoLW, but no Slayers... Well, I need something else to watch this season besides Jojo, so that gives me something to do!

I really love the world building and mechanics that come with it. Like the spell Gaav Flare, no longer working after Gaav has been killed. Since the spell can no longer channel the power of said character.

Also Dragon Slave might be the best goddamn black magic spell of all time.
