A lot less people. A lot more terrain. Grooming is so-so, so if you prefer groomers, Baker is not the place. Food is good and cheap. Lifts are ancient. The main thing is that you need half-decent snow for Baker to be worthwhile.

My last trip to Whistler ( 3 years ago) was a mid week day, deliberately planned to avoid the crowds...and everything was tracked out by 10am and had 20 min line-ups. Roughly around the same time the Whistler mayor said that they didn't want day-trippers from the lower mainland, because they brought their own lunch and didn't spent enough. I haven't been back since. When I moved to Vancouver 10 years ago, a local single day ticket was $70 (Edge cards were even cheaper!)...it's now $140+ and my salary sure as hell hasn't doubled in that time frame.

Tons of fresh snow, instructor was stoked when he realized that I wasn't a beginner. Getting off the chair, he goes 'follow me, but not too close', turns into the 'powder' and promptly endos onto his face as the 'powder' is soaking wet. I , as I was following, managed to just miss him and face plant right next to him. Waist high fresh snow and completely unrideable. We knew it wouldn't be ideal, but was not expecting it to be that bad!!

I'm thinking of getting new boots and bindings. Boots will probably be a pair of ThirtyTwo Lashed, but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for in bindings. I got a 5 year old pair of Ride Rodeos, probably got 60 days on them. Has binding tech changed much in the last 5 years? All mountain riding.

A whole house, usually costs less than a single hotel room in Whistler. The big gotcha is the variable weather. If you get crappy weather, there really is nothing to do...which may be fine for some.

If you look like you're over 30, don't bother with the BoardRoomShop in Vancouver. Go to Pacific Boarder or Comor instead, (if you want any service that is). Tyler at Pacific Boarder is easily the best snowboard boot guy I've ever dealt with. I almost bought a pair of Vans, but we agreed that I should try Comor instead as they had a different selection and I might find the perfect pair there. This is after more than an hour trying out boots, footbeds, etc.

I actually got out riding last night. (First time in 2 years!). Always that sketchy moment when getting off the lift the first time, but yeah, I still know how to ride a board. Legs are crying today, though.

Is it just a Vancouver thing, where people think that going up a mountain in low-profile summer tires during a snow storm is a good idea?. The road wasn't even bad, but there was several cars in the ditch (despite traffic moving at like 20km/h). Similar when leaving, there was sooo many people stuck in parking lot, or getting stuck trying to exit, blocking the road. I know this was the first real powder day of the season (and it was pretty sweet!), but still. On the plus side, my new boot/binding combination is awesome. (Vans infusion/Now Drive). So much more control.

Having only ridden 4 snowboards in my life I'm pretty tempted to give the rentals a shot. I'd take a Jones Mountain twin, probably even a day on the Hovercraft, if the conditions are good. No, you can easily walk to the peak 2 peak. No tickets needed. (other than getting up to the gondola itself). Blackcomb glacier can be epic with fresh snow, but otherwise I wouldn't bother. Hookshot probably knows it better than me.

So, I have a non-snow related trip to Japan planned in late March, but the Corona thing may put the planned events at risk. I can't get a refund on my flight ticket, so I'm now thinking of bringing my snowboard and head up to Hokkaido instead. What resorts should I look at?. I'd have ~7 days or so, although may stop by some friends in Tohoku on the way. Trying to keep it to a reasonably budget. I speak a little Japanese and can in general, get around on my own.
