Gio posted:i think this is the right thread Slift are pretty unique imho, because they combine a lot of different genres really well. You have stoner-ish fuzzy riffs, some punk influences, a lot of space rock, some jammy guitar stuff, a bit of krautrock. There are bands that are similar to aspects of their music, but I don’t know if there are any that would sound similar overall. That said, here are some albums I think you’d enjoy if you like Slift. Gondhawa - Käampâla (also from France, really diverse, genre bending stoner/psych, with some microtonal stuff thrown in, some kraut influences, and they sing in a moon language so you don’t even have to worry about lyrics) GLEN - PULL (instrumental stoner psych with longer songs, I’d say more similar to Elder than Slift, but worth checking out if you like both) Hollow Mirrors - II (this lacks the stoner influences until the last song, but otherwise it’s spacey, sometimes punky, sometimes proggy krautrock - less intense than Slift, though) Howling Giant - The Space Between Worlds and/or Alteration (Space Between etc. is their last proper album and has vocals, it’s spacey prog/psych rock with some good crunchy riffs - it lacks Slift’s improvisational/jammy side, but I’d place them in the same genre, roughly; Alteration is their latest release, an instrumental EP based on jams that they worked on during quarantine, it has some bangers) They also have a split release with Sergeant Thunderhoof, a concept album based on the lore of Masamune and Muramasa. It’s really good if you’re into proggy stoner stuff. I’d actually go as far as saying this is probably my favourite material from either band. Karkara - Nowhere Land (another French band, I’d actually say these guys are somewhat similar to Slift’s sound, but they’re less stoner and more motorik rhythms and claustrophobic guitars; similarly noisy and weird, though - and they have a didgeridoo and they don’t even overuse it) Korto - s/t (another French band, this time more uhh… motorik rhythms and open country roads? It’s poppy sometimes, but it's really intricate and sometimes really hard hitting rock; stoner side is completely absent) Pyramid - Mind Maze (really good instrumental kraut/stoner rock. Some really good riffs and song progressions. Probably one of my favourite albums in the style) I’m sure there are others but I guess I’ll stop here. I’ve been on a hell of a psych rock discovery trip for the past two years, and Slift were one of the first bands to pave the way for me. Them and Entropia - Vacuum, I guess. Anyway, let me know what you think if you ever get around to checking any of them out. edit: added Bandcamp links edit 2: lol, Gondhawa and Karkara are on Stolen Body Records. edit 3: to continue the Osees discussion from the stoner doom thread, imho their best album (that I've heard and gotten into, I should say) is Mutilator Defeated At Last. It's short and sweet (33 minutes), it has some really awesome guitar work from Dwyer, and he has some slightly demented, sing-songy vocals on this record that manage to work really well. I would actually add this album to my recommendation list above, as it has a spacey, driving, sometimes noisy garage rock feel that's somewhat similar to what Slift are peddling. Check out Web, Withered Hand (this even opens with a pretty Slift-sounding riff, despite coming out five years earlier), Sticky Hulks, Palace Doctor. Figured this belonged in the psych rock thread, too:Lunsku posted:New Minami Deutsch album dropped and if kraut repetition is your thing, definitely worth to check it out. Just listening to this album now, it’s pretty great. I was kinda iffy on the first two songs just because of the abundance of fx (rhythmic breathing in the first one, weird sounds like you’re turning your kitchen upside down looking for the butter knife in the second one - guess I was still foggy on the album at that point he he), but it smoothed out really quick after that. The title track might be my favourite song of theirs so far (and I fuckin loved With Dim Light, btw)

I just recently discovered Frankie and the Witch Fingers, and this poo poo is loving awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZUa4Cwk3Ag https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhpjtgNyX0A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etpNjPVAbH0 edit: have other psych rock you may like: Les Big Byrd - Katamaran (prolly the best motorik song released in 2022 imo) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqavCQyyRjg The rest of the album is good to great, as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5xuF5v7Mis Then there's the best motorik track of 2023 lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep7YzBUhuuQ (though I do understand if people choose not to categorize this as pysch rock - it has more of a space rock/early krautrock vibe, though that's still psychedelic rock to me) Tross - Qvist Mill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvLzKPa6JI4 Mud Spencer - Ratu Kidul; this might belong more in the stoner/doom thread, but it has a wonderfully psychedelic kind of devotional repetitiveness to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjUkQh9GmaQ Julie's Haircut - Zukunft (another great motorik banger): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VV--IQ1GhU Zement - C3S (this song is kind of incredible, especially considering it was recorded live with only 2 people making all this racket) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZWr1swgIFk e: speaking of motorik bangers, if you haven't heard Osees' C yet, you should: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izjtDkTUIyg e: also, new Mildlife single is out. I prefer the Prins Thomas remix (you get it on BC when you buy the single), it has a darker, krautrock kinda vibe, but the original is loving golden, as well: e2: updated link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaes7ozjDEw It's less psych rock, more jazzy/krauty space disco. Wildtortilla posted:What a good post! All the stuff that's bolded I really dig. I've been stuck on King Gizz for a few to several months and this is such a good change of pace! Yeah, I've been on a huge Gizz kick, too. I hate to sound like a blowhard, but imho they're one of the best bands of our generation. When you look at their entire catalogue and see how they've progressed, the topics they've tackled, the genre fusions, the microtonal stuff, which was then integrated into pop music (ie. Butterfly 3k), the whole Bootlegger stuff they're doing where they're releasing entire, giant loving live albums like Live at Red Rocks '22 (86 songs of live Gizz, it must've been insanity to catch the whole thing live) for free, in FLAC, with album art, credits, etc. It's just kinda ground-breaking stuff imho. You may not like all the material they release (I'm lukewarm on the poppier, lighter stuff myself), but all the material they release is great for what it is. They're impeccable musicians. K.G. has some amazing middle-eastern fusion going on in Automation, a lot of Turkish scales. Sounds like modern Anatolian psych rock. Most of K.G. and L.W. is some of their best material, though (again, in my opinion - I identify with a lot of their lyrics on these albums, too, which might be why I'm biased). Osees are great. Took a while for me to get into them, but after listening to John Dwyer's jazz fusion/experimental/rock/noise etc releases, I kinda got a feel for their rock side and I got into them in a big way. Again, incredible musicians, and the live stuff I've heard has been on fire. A lot of krautrock influence in their jams, too. They're kinda hit and miss for me in the studio, though, in the sense that their forays into hardcore punk, etc. weren't really my thing. Their new album sounds pretty good, but I've only heard it once. Reminded me of the new Frankie and the Witch Fingers but slightly more mid. Speaking of Mildlife, have you heard heard Phase II and How Long Does It Take? They're great singles, maybe some of my favorite material from them. e: oh this is what I mean when I say I identify with the lyrics: (from O.N.E., off L.W.) [Chorus] Am I going insane? Am I able to wake from the nightmare? Can I keep it containеd? One night everywhеre turned to nowhere fuckin he'll yeah i hear that brother Smekerman fucked around with this message at 13:52 on Oct 22, 2023 |

I recently scored a code on DoomCharts for Tropic Santos - Caccia Grossa, an Italian heavy psych trio. It's great stuff, actually. Really cool, jammy stoner grooves, with a huge bass sound. Kinda reminds me of Earthless and other bands of its ilk, but more focused. I've also been listening to the new Slift. I have to admit, it's not hitting as hard as Ummon did for me. It's heavier and sludgier, and more progressive, and post-rockish, and has sax solos, etc. It just feels like they went for excess, and it almost works... but maybe it's just too drat long and unfocused. I dunno. I've only given it three and a half listens so far, but 80 minutes is a lot to sit through. I'll sit with it for another month or so, see how I feel about it then. Been getting into Pharaoh Overlord recently. They're actually kind of an amazing band, imho. I feel like people try to approach them as kind of typical "stoner rock" and then are either put off or otherwise misunderstand them. These guys might've started out fuzzy on their first album, but they're the same people as Circle, which is an insane avantgarde rock/metal band that focuses on repetition. And that's what Pharaoh Overlord's stuff is, as well - repetitive music played live, except more riff-based than Circle. I feel like their first album is almost a deconstruction of stoner rock, reassembled as minimalism. Their second and third albums veered into spacey, atmospheric krautrock (for the most part - Skyline, on the second album, is probably one of their most brutal songs, in that it's one stoner riff repeated ad infinitum, getting louder and more distorted as the song progresses), then they released a bunch of live albums, then they released a more metalled-up version of krautrock with the Demilich guy on vocals, lol. It's as weird as it sounds, but there's some bangers on that one (Solar Stomp is fantastic). They also released another album that's uhh... synth/disco with Aaron Turner from Isis on vocals Anyway, the best starting point with Pharaoh Overlord is actually their concert at Circus, I think they were supporting Sleep at the time. It's the full version of the band (3 guitarists, bass, and drums) plus they have a live moog. It's a really fun set. (also, Pharaoh Overlord - Circle is really pretty, airy, synthy krautrock, and it doesn't sound like anything else in their discography) New Goat album is also good, btw. They reinvented themselves as a Nordic psych folk/rock band and, you know what? It sounds pretty great. Tripping in the Graveyard is an awesome song. Also, Raised By Hills reminds me of Aphrodite's Child for some reason.
