My boss gave me Wednesday off because I joked I probably wouldn't be in any position to come in after drinking through the night to either celebrate or drown the tears, but I decided to probably just come in anyway because drinking might not be the best idea.

Seconding that yesterday's LWT was loving rough. Even John Oliver was visibly shaking. I'm still not over Trump calling a swastika-waving, torchbearing crowd "very fine people", and I genuinely thought not much would come close to it, but the whole child internment, coupled with the fact that they're pretending equal measures of being forced to do it, and that Democrats were actually responsible for it...

Yeah, I think that may take the cake.

If it actually ends up being a blue wave, I might still break out the booze and call in drunk, but as it is, I think it might be a dry Wednesday.

I won't be drinking, but I may need to game to keep the anxiety away.

Atlanta didn't have any fun things on the ballot, we're just voting to smother real lovely things like Marcy's Dad's Law, Business Court, or Non-Bottomless Mimosas Sunday's and hopefully toss the Republicans out of the governors mansion.

I voted against the Marcy's law, after reading about it a bit, its basically stuff that is already law. But despite not being a drinker, totally voted for the Alcohol legislation, since limited alcohol purchased on Sunday due to church is stupid theology, and I'm having none of that.

Yeah, they're going to get back in eventually and do as much damage as they possibly can when they do. They've got a gameplan and they're sticking to it. There's really no permanent going back from where we are now. The trump playbook is going to be used for the GOP potus candidates for the foreseeable future and when they get someone with some actual intellect and competence in power with a stacked bench and legislature we're probably boned.

Meh, yeah damage has been done, but Trumps messaging only appeals to like 35% of Americans, even less than the GOP majority, and its starting to become toxic. Already they are blaming Trump campaigning as the numbers come in.

Trump largely benefited from low voter turnout, not from increasing GOP support.

Vasudus posted:

The realistic gains are mostly:

1) The democrats lost senate seats largely in places that they had no business being in. Control of the senate was almost assuredly (~80%) likely to still be in republican hands. The senate is still going to confirm lovely people for judges and cabinet positions so this changes nothing.

2) There was a considerable amount of good state-level legislation that passed largely in part to the incredibly high turnout. Some measures that might not have survived in a typical midterm got passed.

3) Enough governorships changed hands that calling a constitutional convention is completely off the table. People might not have realized it but the GOP was *this* close to calling for one, changing poo poo in the constitution, and passing it because they controlled enough states. This is insanely good for the long term.

4) If I had to pick between the house and the senate flipping, I will take the house every goddamn time. Remember, legislation starts in the house. Democratic house means no GOP agenda. Democratic senate means Joe Manchin votes to push things along in favor of bipartisanship.

5) The democrats are in a very good position for 2020, both in gestalt political terms and also raw senate math. Lots of republican senators are up in 2020.

edit: 6) A bunch of really, really lovely republicans got the boot. Not all of them, but enough of them.

Some people online and on the news are crying that the sky is falling because the BLUE WAVE didn't meet the incredibly unrealistic possibilities that were on the fringes of the prediction models. Yesterday was a solid win, period. It's like complaining that someone won a boxing match by points but didn't get a TKO.

A good take away.
