Funny accounts would be great too, same as far as serious ones.

Here's a bunch of people I really like, most of them are nobodies outside of twitter

https://twitter.com/NuclearAnthro cool guy who's getting his PhD in nuclear weapon related anthropology, posts lots of cool nuclear/cold war stuff
https://twitter.com/KrangTNelson big leftist comedy account, sort of a one trick pony in that he mostly just dunks on dumb conservatives but he's pretty clever, gets posted here fairly often
https://twitter.com/RussiawithoutBS good Russia/Ukraine commentary, kind of an anti-tankie leftist, former military, would fit in well here
https://twitter.com/surfbordt good left politics/Russia commentary
https://twitter.com/ArmyStrang leftist soldier with a podcast dedicated to leftist soldiers, would fit in extremely well here if he doesn't already post here
https://twitter.com/pattymo more of a joke account but like a lot of former weird twitter joke people now often jokes about politics since the world is falling apart
https://twitter.com/boring_as_heck see: pattymo
https://twitter.com/crushingbort see: boring_as_heck
https://twitter.com/Bro_Pair writer and I think former FYAD goon, lots of good analysis on stuff, formerly worked closely with @mobute until the latter got outed as a creep
https://twitter.com/EliotHiggins our very own Brown Moses
https://twitter.com/cd_hooks reporter in Texas who has lots of good political analysis and is also pretty funny
https://twitter.com/blippoblappo kind of a cross between @crushingbort and @cd_hooks ?
https://twitter.com/ByYourLogic member of extremely popular leftist podcast Chapo Trap House, all the CTH guys are funny and worth following but he's the funniest IMO

It's really all down to personal taste but I really only directly follow people that are really funny or have an interesting niche like NuclearAnthro because if you follow a bunch of serious business politics people/reporters/etc then your twitter ends up being more or less like watching the news all day which gets kind of depressing even if you can tailor it to be of much higher quality.

My dad sprays atrazine on the farm, is he going to turn gay? :ohdear:

I was actually talking with him earlier this year and he was saying that it wasn't used as much as it used to be because it's a lot more dangerous than newer herbicides but since there's now a lot of weeds that have developed resistance to the newer herbicides they've had more success by going back to atrazine. Hopefully the pendulum swings back the other way in another decade so they don't have to use that poo poo as much. He even mentioned a couple weeks ago that a few people were using loving paraquat because nothing else was working.

Resistance to herbicides/pesticides/antibiotics is a big loving deal y'all. Gotta have rules and regulations in place so the valuable tools we depend on for modern live don't stop working completely.

There's no reason a sufficiently strong economy can't give *everyone* a good quality of life and meet individual demand for certain luxury goods. Can we give everyone a megayacht? No, probably not. Can people who want nice shoes get them? Doesn't seem unreasonable at all to me.

The only way anyone should think otherwise is if they believe there isn't enough to go around to even meet everyone's basic needs or if you think an upper class should be allowed to consume an outrageously disproportionate amount of resources while others suffer with little to nothing because both of these types of people deserve it.

The American left is basically, from right to left and also in order of exponentially increasing scarcity: neoliberals who run the Democratic party, socdems who don't want to completely do away with capitalism but want something more like Scandinavia, democratic socialists who want to do away with capitalism and who's ideal economy varies wildly from person to person, and finally like seven actual communists/anarchists/etc.

Everyone older than like 35-40 had their brains melted by the Cold War and would rather call themselves a pedophile than a socialist. Younger people see conservative media screaming about how these appealing social policies in Scandinavia and elsewhere are SOCIALISM and we say well I guess let's be socialist then!

Fortunately that was the most unrealistic part of Interstellar.

Also with regard to there being fewer Monarch butterflies around that's largely because herbicide resistant crops allow farmers to have few to no milkweed in there fields these days which the Monarch requires to survive. Fewer milkweed = fewer Monarchs. On the other hand the no-till methods allowed by herbicide resistant crops are WAY better for the soil and massively reduce erosion.

Interestingly I have seen it theorized that there were only so many Monarchs in the first place because large scale agriculture allowed the type of milkweed they prefer to thrive and that their populations were probably much lower a couple hundred years ago. Unfortunately nobody was really keeping track back then so we can only speculate.

Also as someone posted earlier they're definitely a case of people only caring about pretty animals while we ignore a thousand other less glamorous species to die off with little concern.

I know bugger all about cutting edge low level genetic work, but a long time ago a friend of mine taught me a buttload about it when he was working in the field and I still have a bookshelf of mid 2000s text books on genetic biochem I read through from time to time. It's nuts complex and I'd happily prosecute anyone that tries any experiments out on a living human unless they could give me a half ton (literally) of supporting documentation before they did so. I may be a bit anal about that kind of research.

You can't really edit the genetics of an organism that's more than an embryo as every cell contains it's own copy of the organism's DNA that's been passed down from the single cell embryo through division. To gene edit an adult you would have to somehow change the DNA of every cell, or at least a big enough percentage that the edited ones are creating the desired effect. Attempts to do this have had uh, unfortunate consequences from what I've been told. Plants are easy because they have totipotency and can be grown into an entirely new plant from any given living cell with the right application of hormones so if you can isolate a cell that's successfully received your edit then you can just grow a plant from that and breed the gene(s) into the population as normal. With animals you pretty much have to do it to an embryo, hope it takes, and then hope it grows up normally. Quite a bit trickier.

So basically for human/animal gene editing we're restricted to making babies and hoping we didn't insanely gently caress them up on accident. Definitely something you want to have an absolute mastery of before you try it on humans.

Pretty much. Fortunately a lot of our code doesn't actually do anything at all so a random change in a random place often won't hurt anything. On the other hand the slightest change in an important section will make it so you never make it to birth or past being a small clump of cells.
