And now for something completely different
This seems like a good time to go back and re-visit a wonderful article written about the Syrian Civil War in the early years of the conflict:

quote:

People who are not Syrian ask me the most painful question, “Why do your people kill each other?” I usually give long-winded explanations, gesturing with my hands but without eye contact, offering historical and logical precedents of tyranny and oppression and revolution and freedom. But I don’t tell them what I should, not out of kindness, but out of pity and because it scares me to admit how hardened I’ve become over the last 20 months: Don’t you dare, even for one second, believe that your people and your cities are immune to what happened to my country, my friend. None of you are.

It's a longish read, but 100% worth your time.

For some weird reason, I've lately found myself going back to this 2013 speech by Ben Fountain :

quote:

What do you suppose the life expectancy is of a country that’s lost its grip on reality? Whose national consciousness is based on delusion and fantasy? Whose dominant mode of expression is the language of advertising and sloganeering? [...]

But to ask young soldiers to sacrifice crucial parts of themselves for what-delusions and fantasies? I call that obscene. It’s morally obscene, and as a practical matter it can’t help but corrupt the life of the country. You can’t ask your youth to sacrifice themselves over and over for nothing without the country eventually rotting from cynicism and disillusionment.

The whole thing is definitely worth a read.

What if voter suppression does its thing and the GOP manages to somehow hold on the House?
