Polls close at 7 pm EST. Expect results to begin trickling in afterward. It’ll probably take several hours (maybe overnight) before the big three races are called since they’re expected to be so close.

In particular, NOVA always reports quite late. The rise in early voting has helped with this, but not completely. Even if Youngkin gets everything else he needs to win (flipping Biden voters in the suburbs, turning out Trump voters in rural areas, low turnout among black voters), high turnout in NOVA could still be enough to eke out a win for TMac. The New York Times should have a needle or a needle-like object to watch, and they're usually pretty good about taking that kind of data into account.

I've seen mixed reports so far-- high turnout in Falls Church, decent but not great in Charlottesville. I'd be wary of trusting anybody reacting to turnout numbers right now; in a close race like this there's a lot of folks interpreting inadequate data in ways that inevitably tend to confirm their biases.

For bird farts from the number geeks, I use this list, and click on some of the less-prominent people they retweet.

It's never been assured, but the polling has been a lot closer than 3 years ago. Anyway, I'm told early voting in Alexandria was very busy, and I just got back from voting myself. It was busy, and this with some pretty foul weather this afternoon.

And before any of you get wild ideas on why McAuliffe lost, just remember:

o A lot of VA is still fairly conservative even among Dems
o CRT was sort of the shorthand; the anger was with schools generally
o Parents are going to be angry about schools a long time; the pandemic was worst on parents without question.
o There was little if any support for parents; Youngkin won't make that better, but the alternative didn't either.
o It was an across-the-board failure, but it was a huge failure and frankly, covid rates among kids never justified how long schools were out. It was destroying people.
o Kids, according to (my friends') teacher friends, are just loving terribly behaved now, and are performing terribly. Parents are furious.
o Schools were closed longest in VA of almost any state. People are mad mad.
o So never run a terminally online guy in the primaries. You might be left with a subpar candidate who beats him.

well it means the CRT bullshit has some legs which means the dems and progressives need better ways of combatting it or making some sacrafises with it its bad for 2022 obviously but i also think part of the reasons Youngkin will probably win is he came off as a "moderate" and seperate from trump. the GOP probably wont learn that lesson. so you will get obvious loving craizes like parnell winning primaries in PA and running around with trump. so gently caress if i know. plus the inflation poo poo and various other poo poo probably. that and they didnt run on the actual accomplishments, running on "gently caress trump" isnt the worst but when the dude is playing boring "resonable" moderate on TV who doesn't "openly" kiss trumps rear end, then it doesn't. hopefully we can learn from this.

i think the legeslature can still hold and the senate isnt up for a vote today. so it might just end up, red govenor with Blueish legislature. not great but i dont think we will as horribly backwards.

it doesnt help that story came out about that person who attacked a girl in restroom and apperently the school knew they were bad news and the right made it a trans panic issue and the school hosed up enough that kids walked out.

If this time next year Covid is a past nightmare, schools have been opened with vaxxed kids for almost a year, the economy has recovered, labor demand is down, and people are just happier in general about the President and congress that does more so we will see then.

also "We're not teaching CRT" is a losing position probably, though i think that was more of a pet issue that helped the trumpkins get out.

Elections in VA are handled by a five member Board of Elections. Because the GOP won this election, three of the Board's members will be Republicans for the next four years. Appointments are subject to confirmation by the General Assembly, and fortunately the Senate wasn't up this year and will stay Dem by a 21-19 margin, but I don't expect that to be a serious hurdle.

So, there's a serious chance the answer is yes.

Brown's victory doesn't matter because now that he won the city council surely is going to abolish the office of mayor like they said they would do, because according to their announcement of it right after Walton won the primary it was their problems with Brown that made abolishing the mayor necessary.

On the one hand, an anti-mask, anti-vaccine fascist got elected as governor of VA. On the other hand it looks like against all odds Richmond might have voted against the regressive tax on the poor and rejected ONE Casino and Resort. A land of contrasts.

Who am I kidding it's not because it's the ethically correct decision, it's because the front group for the business is minority owned and vowed to primarily employee minority workers.

This country is broken and I don't think it can be fixed. Can't wait for the new mysterious surge of COVID to hit the hospitals once the rear end in a top hat tries to dismantle all precautions.

I put the casino down mostly to simple NIMBYism myself, although I'm sure the deliberate play to black voters was a factor. I just don't see the parts of town that came out against this casino proposal being super enthusiastic about any casino. It's probably the right outcome, and it's the one that means the moneyed interests with the well-funded, slick advertising campaign don't get what they want. A stopped NIMBY is right twice a day, I guess!

That's like the same point repeated 6 time!

T-Mac's campaign was really bad. He concentrated on an anti-trump message, he made unforced errors that gifted soundbites to the Rs, and did not co-ordinate well with local orgs. They spent too much time looking for Biden-voting Rs that were not really there. I'm exceedingly bummed that that bad campaign has likely lost us the other statewide posts too.

I'm not sure where you get "Schools were closed longest" - they shut down at about the same time as everyone else in '20, there were generally hybrid in-person options since the start of this (calendar) year, and they've been in-person since the start of the school year. Which is not to say that the covid hangover is not real; behaviour is bad and students are a bit feral; they've forgotten or didn't get a chance to learn a lot of the norms around how to be in school, and it's been a rough time for parents. McAuliffe certainly didn't focus on how he as governor would address those things, but I don't think Virginia's schools had a particularly bad response. It wasn't a huge failure, given, you know, the ongoing global pandemic.

Not sure about the terminally online guy point, either. You can't stop people running, and his presence in the race didn't make any difference to the final outcome.
