Just a reminder that school board and city council elections are just as important as congressional! This election I made the mistake of not researching as much as I could about Alexandria City Council. That will not happen again. I want Danica to keep her seat because I think if she stays in the state house, she would be a great progressive primary challenger to Tim Kaine. Kaine is simply not doing enough on mental health, prescription drug prices, and labor. He made promises to me when I confronted him about it at a meet and greet. Explaining to people that we need to win next year so we can redraw the state lines probably isn't going to register with most people.

That is where you come in Captain Cappy! We are getting a VA Goon Squad together to start driving turnout early and often. I think we can do it in this state. We have a shitton of politically active young people in Northern VA that are just raring to loving go to change things. We have a lot of exciting now-incumbents to defend like Danica Roem AND we have the momentum from 2018 taking 3 congressional districts that...had no business being taken. VA-SEN-33 election has been set for January 8th, 2019. Delegate Jennifer Boysko (D) will face off against former Delegate Joe May, as decided by weekend primaries.

Meanwhile, VA-DEL-24 is in an uproar because the Republican “firehouse primary” was decided by a single vote (!) and Virginia law, despite having hard coded, detailed methodology on deciding ties, has no provision for recounts, and the VA GOP told the loser, Amherst County Supervisor Jimmy Ayers, to do one. Thusly, Rockbridge supervisor Ronnie Campbell moves on to face Lexington activist Christian Worth. That vote is December 18th, 2018.

Is this the alarm bell I have been waiting for Fancy? Shall I assemble the goon squad?

What are Boysko's views on Dominion Power, Green Energy, and Climate Change?

For those that don't know, Dominion Power is trying to poison Virginia's waterways by dumping coal ash in rivers. We need delegates that will kick their corporatist polluting rear end. In 2017 14 Delegates got elected on a pledge to accept NO money from Dominion Power so that means these fucker's stranglehold on VA state politics is getting weaker.

I am digging the Delegate Boysko's record on Human Rights and Progressive change. She is up to replace Wexton's in VA 33rd District.

She sponsored the VA Human Rights Act: https://www.billtrack50.com/BillDetail/677842

Tried to expand what constitutes a Hate Crime: https://www.billtrack50.com/BillDetail/782387

Is currently trying to make it easier to get your sex changed on your birth certificate, pretty huge for trans people : http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?181+sum+HB407
(If I am reading this right, all you would need is basically a doctors note saying "Yes, you are taking hormone therapies etc" and don't have to follow up with any documentation or invasive requirements.)

Trying to pass a bill to make sure that you are informed if your registration is denied and what needs to be fixed on it : http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?181+sum+HB272

Created the Virginia Equal Pay Act : http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?181+sum+HB1089
(This one is interesting because it is attacking pay disparity along racial, gender, AND sexual orientation lines. She is sponsoring one for gov employees as well.)

A lot of these failed in committee, but her record is pretty clear on the subject so that is really loving important. Also, Republicans control the majority by ONE in the House of Delegates so it's no wonder these died in committee...

Also, this loving bill: http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?181+sum+HB1231
gently caress yes! Any VA Goons plan to volunteer for this special election?

She also has a negative score from the Gun-Chud state organization and is trying to pass a bill that makes gun sellers civilly liable if they sell a weapon without performing a background check and then that weapon is used in a crime.

In the 2019 Session of the Virginia House there is a bill called HB1642 is a bill that just collects data on how often prisons use solitary confinement. Here the blurb:

quote:

Solitary confinement; data collection and reporting; report. Requires the Department of Corrections to submit an annual report to the General Assembly and the Governor containing specified statistical information regarding the Department's use of solitary confinement, as defined in the bill.

How about we hmm idk outlaw solitary confinement because it is loving torture and has no place in a modern society? I encourage VA goons to call their state reps and start demanding that instead of asking for metrics that prisons will prob lie about anyways.

Edit: Also next year VA is proposing a state constitution amendment called Right to Vote I encourage everyone to spam your reps to tell them to vote for this loving yesterday.

Edit Edit: Let's not forget this amendment to the constitution of Virginia regarding a commission to draw the districts! HJ582

it's not intended to satisfy people who want to abolish solitary confinement. it's intended to get information useful for swaying people who don't currently want to abolish it or don't care enough to have an opinion. so you shouldn't be satisfied with it, but you also shouldn't attack it as trying to satisfy you because that's not at all what it's trying to do. it's trying to shine a spotlight on the practice.

I hope you are right. Though I am always inherently suspicious of prisons in general and I have very little faith that the metrics they will be reporting will be accurate which is why I am up in arms about it.

I’ll always remember that he showed up to the anti-Nazi rally in August - not as a glory seeker in a suit, but as a rank and file DSA member in a red T shirt and jeans. He’s a good man.

But the state GOO is equally flat footed. They’re still cranking out the awfulness, because the primary base still lives that wacky wild Kool Aid style. They’re still the party of Cuccinelli and EW Jackson. So we fight on.

Lee Carter bucked EVERYTHING and trounced his opposition. I think he has a couple allies in people like Danica Roem, but I think he can survive if he sticks to his guns and does what he set out to do.

He will definitely need all the help and volunteers he can get so anyone that can lend assistance for a guy who actually gives a poo poo about Virginians and regular peeps, it would go a long way!
