To anyone who hasn't checked, Tester has pulled out the win! MT Sen holds!

If Sinema pulls out this last race it will absolutely poo poo on Trumps attempts to spin this defeat, especially since it will come a full two days after his declaration of victory and probably headline that night's news as a result. The timing will make it almost as bad as not pulling off a net gain at all.

Whats the update on the last few house races? Are we still looking at +32 to 35, or could we even bust that?

Reposting for the benefit of a more on-topic thread:

Based on NYT's current stats for unfinished races, House D's are looking at a final tally +34 or +35. The blue favored races are all at ~+1% or more except for one that's at +0.6.

However, out of the R-favored races there are FOUR running at +0.6 or less. Which means that +39 is not impossible. However, at this late state I feel like even super close races like these are unlikely to be wrong. The NJ-3 race just called as an upset against an earlier R victory declaration was listed at D +0.9 by the Times.

SINEMA TAKES THE LEAD IN AZ! 350k votes still on the table, and NONE of those currently counted are from her stronghold in Pima county!!

The lead is only ~2k votes so this still may not happen, but dear god, the odds are now truly in our favor. And the gap in FL just keeps getting smaller. I refuse to actually believe that Florida will flip, but if it does we'll be able to say the Republican Party took the most advantageous Senate election map in the history of this country and got ONE seat out of it.

I think Pepper needs to go, having the chair of the ODP be from the corner of the state that is furthest from its Democratic base is ridiculous. The losses in Dem support in NE Ohio are what is turning the state red, and David Pepper has no clue what to do about it. I have lived in NE Ohio and Cincinnati, in fact they are the only two places I have ever lived, and they could not be more different. Hell, Joe Schiavoni should chair the ODP.....he's got nothing better to do now that he's term limited in the Ohio Senate (a seat that is now red).

The thought of Ohio being permanently lost is legit scary because the common wisdom, which I can recall being repeated even when I was small child hearing about President-elect Clinton, was that Ohio is kind of the political axis of america, the quintessential bellweather for national and especially presidential politics. Both teams could win and which one wins it sets the tone for the rest of the nation. It's hard to process that just not being the case anymore, even in a world where Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and even Texas are trending more and more blue every year and the electoral map has plenty of other places for democrats to go win.

I hope Ohio's state party and fix their mess. Sherrod Brown seems really cool, and if he can win without being a Manchin and selling his soul then its absurd that other Ds in the state can't.

It matters because Mississippi is a republican stronghold and a defeat there is a further condemnation of Trumpism and makes it that much more likely when/if the moment comes the party will cut bait on him and his way of doing things, which in turn will be a nasty blow to surging right wing populism/grassroots fascism. It matters because authoritarians need constant perceptions of victory or their cults of personality implode, so every single defeat Trump can be dealt has value no matter how small or transient.

I choose to see McSally's appointment as a sign that Ducey smells Trump's blood in the water. McSally's campaign's electoral post-mortem all but laid her defeat entirely at Trump's feet for turning independents against her and not breaking the 80% overall approval threshold among GOP base voters. Putting her in the seat after that is all but an openly thrown gauntlet.

This isn't to say McSally will be anything but a rubber stamp for neonazi bullshit, as McCain pretty much was, but the more Republicans who are positioning themselves to stick knives in Trump's back when/if the moment comes the better I say. We've long been worried about what happens if Trump gets to the point of Nixon but the party refuses to turn on him, so less to-the-hilt Trumpians and more political hack opportunists, particularly in the Senate, is in the aggregate a good thing I think.

I recall an op-ed about a million years ago about how self-proclaimed centrists and former republicans who can't stomach what their party has become and are considering voting for democrats better understand that democratic candidates aren't going to compromise core party values, such as being Pro-Choice for instance, to make it easy for them. Either get on board or sit the elections out, because Democrats are (in his view anyway) finally recognizing that being Democrats instead of Diet Republicans is what's winning them elections.

These handful of party-swappers that keep popping up make me wonder what values they're bringing with them, and how they expect to survive future elections and primaries if they don't believe in core planks of the Democratic Party Platform. It's an even more prescient question for them to consider given the fact that Blue Dogs got put down all over the electoral map in 2018. The Party is moving left at a decent clip, and if you can't swim fast enough to catch it you're only going to drown anyway.

The fact that the strongest block of support to stay in office for Northam is African Americans is pretty interesting. It's looking more and more like he's going to survive this tornado of madness.

It really was a perfect storm for Northam. Fairfax being exposed as a sexmonster, Herring also coming out with his admission and therefore the threat of a Republican taking the mansion, and then finally that revelation the other day about the State Senate Majority Leader's yearbook that was just full to busting with openly racist language and photos to remind everyone what an R governor in Virginia really means.

If I were in Virginia I'd still be pissed as hell at Northam, for the racism as a matter of course, for the threat this poses to the taking back of the legislature and the state's strength as a blue bastion, for the lovely was he's handled it all, and particularly for that story that when the heat was on the most he was thinking about ditching the party and becoming an I Governor rather than just doing what was right. But it looks like he's not going anywhere.

However, if Virginia Dems (and the goon in this thread) can take anything positive away from all this, I hope it's that both the national and state parties did the right thing pretty much the whole way, and still are doing so. Fairfax is facing impeachment if he doesn't step down. Herring is working with the Black Caucus to make amends with the community. And if that poll number among black respondents is anything to go by, enthusiasm for Team D has not been strangled in it's crib.\

Keep fighting friends, your home seems to have your backs. :)

So Arizona finally put its CRITICAL RACE THEORY IS THE REAL RACISTS crap under the state budget about a week ago, and three days ago the Governor signed it into law as a separate bill so that it would cover ALL State institutions, not just schools. Here's what the final text ended up being:

quote:

A. A TEACHER, ADMINISTRATOR OR OTHER EMPLOYEE OF A SCHOOL DISTRICT, CHARTER SCHOOL OR STATE AGENCY WHO IS INVOLVED WITH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN GRADES PRESCHOOL THROUGH THE TWELFTH GRADE MAY NOT USE PUBLIC MONIES FOR INSTRUCTION THAT PRESENTS ANY FORM OF BLAME OR JUDGMENT ON THE BASIS OF RACE, ETHNICITY OR SEX.

So this is the attempted knife to the heart of accurate history teaching to benefit white supremacism. It might as well read "When teaching about slavery, manifest destiny, eugenics, Jim Crow, patriarchy or any other horrible poo poo Americans did in the past, you cannot present any form of blame or judgement against White Men." Its written intentionally vaguely of course, but we all know how it'll be interpreted by the chud parents who are aching to destroy the Liberal Commie Indoctrinators they think are poisoning their children's minds.

You want to know the best part? Right after this was put into the budget, Gov. Ducey signed a bill which requires an additional year of history education related to Genocides, including the Holocaust. Somehow I just bet that if I pass blame or judgment on the ethnic group responsible for THAT nobody around here will have a problem with it.

Well, some of them will, but I don't need to explain that one to you all...

quote:

B. A TEACHER, ADMINISTRATOR OR OTHER EMPLOYEE OF A SCHOOL DISTRICT, CHARTER SCHOOL OR STATE AGENCY WHO IS INVOLVED WITH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN GRADES PRESCHOOL THROUGH THE TWELFTH GRADE MAY NOT ALLOW INSTRUCTION IN OR MAKE PART OF A COURSE THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS:

1. ONE RACE, ETHNIC GROUP OR SEX IS INHERENTLY MORALLY OR INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR TO ANOTHER RACE, ETHNIC GROUP OR SEX.

2. AN INDIVIDUAL, BY VIRTUE OF THE INDIVIDUAL'S RACE, ETHNICITY OR SEX, IS INHERENTLY RACIST, SEXIST OR OPPRESSIVE, WHETHER CONSCIOUSLY OR UNCONSCIOUSLY.

3. AN INDIVIDUAL SHOULD BE INVIDIOUSLY DISCRIMINATED AGAINST OR RECEIVE ADVERSE TREATMENT SOLELY OR PARTLY BECAUSE OF THE INDIVIDUAL'S RACE, ETHNICITY OR SEX.

4. AN INDIVIDUAL'S MORAL CHARACTER IS DETERMINED BY THE INDIVIDUAL'S RACE, ETHNICITY OR SEX.

5. AN INDIVIDUAL, BY VIRTUE OF THE INDIVIDUAL'S RACE, ETHNICITY OR SEX, BEARS RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACTIONS COMMITTED BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE SAME RACE, ETHNIC GROUP OR SEX.

6. AN INDIVIDUAL SHOULD FEEL DISCOMFORT, GUILT, ANGUISH OR ANY OTHER FORM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS BECAUSE OF THE INDIVIDUAL'S RACE, ETHNICITY OR SEX.

7. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, MERITOCRACY OR TRAITS SUCH AS A HARD WORK ETHIC ARE RACIST OR SEXIST OR WERE CREATED BY MEMBERS OF A PARTICULAR RACE, ETHNIC GROUP OR SEX TO OPPRESS MEMBERS OF ANOTHER RACE, ETHNIC GROUP OR SEX.

This section would make me laugh if it wasn't so horrifying that this is actual, codified state law now. It reads like The Facebook Feed Of That One Uncle. The fact that they really believe teachers are teaching white children that they should feel psychological distress for the crimes the ancestors or that if they are white they are born immoral or that a Academic Achievement was invented to oppress other races is just... so bizarre.

I mean, yeah, for the last one there are certainly plenty of examples of things along those lines being used as dogwhistles and fig leaves for racism, and I assume that is what these Nazis are trying to ensure nobody teaches any children, but the way its written reads like they think teachers are literally instructing kids to become welfare queens because THE MAN made up working hard to keep them down. Which is probably what they think Marx believed, so I guess that IS what they think teachers are teaching.

quote:

C. AN ATTORNEY ACTING ON BEHALF OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL MAY REQUEST A LEGAL OPINION OF THE COUNTY ATTORNEY OR ATTORNEY GENERAL AS TO WHETHER A PROPOSED USE OF SCHOOL DISTRICT RESOURCES WOULD VIOLATE THIS SECTION.

D. A TEACHER WHO VIOLATES THIS SECTION SHALL BE SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION, INCLUDING THE SUSPENSION OR REVOCATION OF THE TEACHER'S CERTIFICATE, AS THE STATE BOARD DEEMS APPROPRIATE.

E. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OR THE COUNTY ATTORNEY FOR THE COUNTY IN WHICH AN ALLEGED VIOLATION OF THIS SECTION OCCURS MAY INITIATE A SUIT IN THE SUPERIOR COURT IN THE COUNTY IN WHICH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, CHARTER SCHOOL OR STATE AGENCY IS LOCATED FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMPLYING WITH THIS SECTION.

F. FOR EACH VIOLATION OF THIS SECTION, INCLUDING SUBSEQUENT OR CONTINUED VIOLATIONS, THE COURT MAY IMPOSE A CIVIL PENALTY NOT TO EXCEED $5,000 PER SCHOOL DISTRICT, CHARTER SCHOOL OR STATE AGENCY WHERE THE VIOLATION OCCURS.

And the poo poo cherry on the sundae! The original text of the bill planned to make teachers civilly liable for a $5000 fine, but the state dems and some Republican defectors fearing for their seats forced them to change the fine target to the schools and districts. But don't you think they weren't going to get their pound of flesh, because the teachers can now face a maximum penalty of CERTIFICATE REVOCATION if they teach the wrongthink! Yaaaaaaay.

Now, this all seems really horrible, right? Well, there's an interesting wrinkle: this is the text from the budget version. The list of concepts not to be taught is separate from the general provision against "blame or judgment." But in the separate law Doucey signed the other day, HB 2906, that list of concepts not to be taught is rebranded as the DEFINITION of "blame and judgment!"

quote:

D. "BLAME OR JUDGMENT ON THE BASIS OF RACE, ETHNICITY OR SEX" MEANS THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS:

So, this is actually amazing, because it totally neuters the law. Before, Section A was worded in such a nebulous way by not defining "blame or judgment," that any history teacher would have to be constantly looking over the metaphorical shoulders, because all it would take is some kid's parent thinking you're trying to force their baby into feeling The White Guilt and you'd be in the crosshairs. But now they have strictly defined what "blame or judgment," means, and its the litany of dumb Breitbart Headline Bullshit That Doesn't Actually Exist. They've literally sabotaged their own anti-Critial Race Theory law at the one yard line. Truly, Republican incompetence has reached new heights. They can't even Nazi properly at this point.

---

Now, if you'll indulge me a moment, I would like to share another amendment to the state budget which passed the House but was not carried forward by the Senate in the final budget:

quote:

To help families, civic institutions, local communities, school district governing boards and charter schools prepare students to be civically responsible and knowledgeable adults, the State Board of Education shall work with the School of [Civic and] Economic Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University, the Center for the Philosophy of Freedom at the University of Arizona, and the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute to:

Develop civic education standards that school districts and charter schools must include pursuant to section 15-701.01. The civic education standards must include instruction on:
(a) the original intent of the founding documents and principles of the United States as found in source documents.

(b) the civic-minded expectations of an upright and desirable citizenry that recognizes and accepts responsibility for preserving and defending the blessings of liberty inherited from prior generations and secured by the United States Constitution.

Create and maintain a list of oral history resources to be used along with the civic education standards that provide portraits in patriotism based on first-person accounts of victims of other nations’ governing philosophies who can compare those philosophies with those of the United States.

If the general wording of this little amendment doesn't already concern you with its heavy jingoist, nationalist, American Exceptionalist and implied violent overtones, here's a disturbing fact: those first two organizations which the State Board would have been MANDATED to work with to develop the new civics curriculum? They're Koch-funded Conservative think tanks. The third one, in case it isn't obvious, was founded by a Republican SCOTUS Justice, and while it claims to be non-partisan, I'm pretty skeptical when its Lecture Series proudly promotes how Former President Bush and Colin Powell are two of their most prominent headliners.

And if that wasn't enough for you, here's an earlier part of the proposed amendment that makes it clear (in case you couldn't guess) what it means by "victims of other nations' governing philosophies who can compare those philosophies with those of the United States."

quote:

The academic standards prescribed by the state board in social studies shall include personal finance, and American civics education AND A COMPARATIVE DISCUSSION OF POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES, SUCH AS COMMUNISM AND TOTALITARIANISM, THAT CONFLICT WITH THE PRINCIPLES OF FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY ESSENTIAL TO THE FOUNDING PRINCIPLES OF THE UNITED STATES.

This amendment was a literal attempt to force teachers to teach Militant Neo-Red Scare Propaganda as if it were civics, and indeed to not only do it themselves, but to forcibly include state-funded testimonials from Cuban Expats and any other counter-revolutionary they can find to sit in front of a camera and tell children that every bad thing that happened to them and their family was because of Communism and nothing else. Like, its not enough to try and control what the teachers teach, they want to mandate, at the state level, ideologically compliant primary sources.

Jesus loving christ, I've said it before but I need to get the hell out of this state and into a securely blue one. The AZ GOP may be imploding, but I don't want to be around while there is even a single breath in their bodies. I'm more and more terrified of what they might do in their death throes every day, and the other red states are trying to do even worse. If their goal is to try and turn their schools into ideology factories by making sure no teachers who care about actual education and facts are willing to risk living under their governments, kudos, its working.
