No maybe about it. He's the defending champ it's not on him to take the risks imo.

I think Carlsen is content with draws for now because he'd be happy to go to the rapid/blitz tiebreakers, and Caruana is happy with draws for now because his strategy is probably to go for a single win in one of the late games. No point in him waking the sleeping dragon yet. I predict more boring games for a while, and then Caruana goes for something new and risky he's prepared around game 9.

I have a feeling Carlsen might try something when he has white twice in a row for games 6 and 7, because I think he will want to have an advantage by game 12 since if they're tied at 5.5-5.5 and Fabi has the white pieces in the last game who knows what could happen.

Fairly interesting game today. Caruana is up a pawn at move 20 but Carlsen has a better position, including an active King and the Bishop pair while Caruana only has his dark squared Bishop. Judging by the previous games a quick draw is never the less my prediction.

It is the platonic spirit of e4e5: Go through some crazy looking but straightforward sequence. Go directly to a queenless endgame. Draw.

Piece sacrifice into an unbalanced endgame. Still objectively a draw, but by no means a guarantee on either side. Of note is that Caruana doesn't have the correct bishop for the corner.

If this kind of position occurred between unrated players I would give it similar chances of winning, but a low chance of a draw. Though again, black is the one with the slight advantage. Pretty interesting, that trend. I blame excessive preparation. e: with the pawn sacrifice at a5 it now almost looks like a reversal of Carlson-Nakamura at the sinquefield cup. People in the chess24 chat are claiming that there was a win for black at move 67, but black missed it. Seems very, uh, theoretical.

Stockfish announced mate in 30 after Carlsen played Kg6 and then I guess Caruana didn't do whatever Stockfish wanted because then it switched to mate in 63 and then it went back to slight advantage for black.

Next stop move 114, I guess. e: I can actually see this game creating one of those stealth repetitions. Like not the same position three times consecutively, but distributed over 10-20 moves. e2: Yeah, looks like Grischuk has identified a position triple repetition. And now we're into theoretical draw territory. RIP. He should've had this.

And it's in the books. Probably a large number of books. And Grischuk gives the final word: "And every Friday I'm wasted like poo poo."

If you can't calculate forced mate in 63, can you even call yourself a super GM?

Okay, well, maybe "should've had this" is a bit strong. But it felt like he was always perpetually on the verge of victory. I guess that's to Carlsen's credit, then. It'll be a bit of a bummer if this is decided by speed chess.

Quick note for who isn't following via chess 24, the stream has consistently gotten better throughout the match. The hosts were a bit awkward at the beginning, and Sopiko was kinda side-lined a lot (partially understandable I guess, the two others are simply better players) but now they've all gotten used to each other as a group, and also figured out a way to treat Sopiko's contributions more seriously (even though there are still occasions where she suggests something that's "obviously wrong" to the others).

This is not what white would conventionally want out of an opening, but if Caruana is already using time then Carlsen probably has roughly what he wants. It's an unbalanced position, not immediately simplifying, and has options for play. Now if you could just tell me what Carlsen does about Nc4 plans. e: Giri: "Go Premium. Unmute the Grischuk."

Grischuk: "You know, on a weak engine this is the first line." Giri: "Hey, you got a weak engine." Svidler: "This is the highest complement I've been paid in a while."
