Part 5-3: Plants and Puppets

Hey, girls! I’ve thought of another wonderful new idea.

Roger’s Money Tree

You’ll do it! Great, thank you! I knew you would!

Ugh!

How many bullets do I have left? I guess I’ll only need one, anyway…

I’m sorry, I got carried away again! But this time it really is a great idea!

Huh. I guess we can at least hear you out…

Thank you! Now, then. Have you ever heard of a tree that grows golden fruit? It’s just an idiom, normally, but alchemy can make it real! What I’ve come up with is a tree that blooms with Coll every day!

Hahahaha! My daughters, true to their greedy desires! I like it!

Hmm. That sounds a bit too good to be true… I can see this going really wrong!

Here we go, then! Get ready for your next test from me!

If this works out, we’ll all be rich! For our bright, gold-filled future, go get to work!

Lydie! Dad just needs lots and lots of wood, right? We’ve got plenty of that in storage from beating wood golems in the Great Woods, so we can just fork it over!

Alright, Sue… let’s see how this works out.

Roger Inspiration Condition: give Roger 18 Kifa.

That was incredible, girls! Hahaha! You’ve stirred up my creative soul!

We just have to sit back and wait for Dad to do his thing, then.

Bah… I can’t wait when it comes to his money tree! I gotta hand it to him, being able to make something like that!

Later on…

It’s divine! This is the Gold Tree, that blooms with Coll? Mmmmmm… Haha, something’s wrong with my mouth!

Sue, you’re slobbering everywhere!

Hah! Sorry. I just lost every sensibility, faced with this marvel.

Ah! Look! It’s starting to bloom!

What! Look at all that! Incredible. We’ll be rich in no time, like this!

Uwah! You’re right, this is a fantastic invention!

What did I say? My idea was perfect!

3000 Coll received.

Wait! Tell me. Do you need to water this tree?

Nope, no water needed. It uses a very special fertilizer. Gold.

Excuse me?

What! 100,000 Coll? That puts us completely in the red, no matter how you think about it!

Hmmm, that’s a good point. Huh, another screw up!

Hah! I can’t even get angry. Dad, go and dump this tree somewhere. …Don’t give me that look! I mean, come on! A tree that will drink all our cash? This is literally the last thing we need around here!

What?! You can’t throw it away! This is a tree, struggling for life… huh? Is something burning?

Burn it with fire! If you have to hate someone over this, tree, then hate our dad!

Lydie! Hey! What are you doing? Stop it! Hey, stop it! Hey!

Whew! Crisis averted! Finances salvaged! But the house reeks of smoke now, though… let’s go and take a nice, long stroll, Sue!

Sure thing! Hmm, how about to Fritz and Drossel’s?

Their First Puppet Show

Hey, girls. Great timing.

Hehehe. We didn’t get to show you yet, did we? But now we’re ready! Time to put on a show!

Really? Yes, we want to see it! Go ahead!

Good, good! Hahaha! Time to raise the curtain, Drossel!

You said it! Time to prove what we can do, Dad!

Fritz and Drossel walk over to some boxes with puppets in them.

What about you, little Plachta? Ah, your eyes are sparkling again today!

What about you, Fritz? Ah, you’re looking just dandy! Can I get a kiss?

It’s like they’ve become different people!

No, we haven’t! That’s not what’s happening here!

That’s right! Nothing odd here!

Now, open your eyes wide and watch closely!

This is our heartfelt puppet show!

One puppet show later…

And they all lived happily ever after! That’s the end of our show!

Phew. What did the two of you think?

It was great fun! I’m still so excited!

Me too! That was much more thrilling than I expected!

Good, good. Haha, they liked it, Dad!

Yeah. We’ll put on another show anytime you want to see one! Come again any time!

We will! Thank you so much!

The twins leave.

Hahaha, that was fun, wasn’t it, Sue? The two of them are a bit odd though, aren’t they?

That’s a “yes” on both counts! Nice people, though. Hehe! Let’s go and see another show soon!

For now, the smoke should have cleared from our atelier. Let’s go home.

The next morning…

The Church Social

Ah! I know what that means!

:catholic: That’s right! It’s time for the church gathering!

The twins depart immediately.

Hey, it’s Sister Grace. I think it’s about to start! This is exciting!

All of you good little boys and girls! Hello!

:pray::woop: Hello!

…Eh? Who is this woman and what did she do with Sister Grace?

You seem really happy! I’m happy too, kids! What have I got to show you today? This!

S-Sister? W-W-What’s going on here?

Let’s do this! “Carefree Palul and Easygoing Polul”!

Another puppet show later…

:haw: Hahaha! The puppets were so funny!

:j: Yeah! I want to see it again!

Uwah! Palul! I’m so happy Polul finally saw your point of view!

Hehe. It looks like you enjoyed yourselves?

Sister Grace! That was amazing! Palul is my new hero! I can’t stop crying!

Like I told you. My puppet shows are something special.

You’re right. It was totally different from anything I’ve seen before… The show, and you too…

Did you get a personality transplant or something? You were charged with energy!

Ah… That reminds me, I need to go and tidy up.

You can’t run from this line of questioning! We will get to the bottom of this!

V-Very well. I actually love puppets and puppet shows. I have loads of them in my room that I’ve made. I was just so happy to put on that show…

That your emotions got the best of you. I see.

Now I’m all embarrassed about it… It feels like my face is on fire!

Hahaha, don’t worry about it! You were lovely, Sister Grace!

That’s right. The show was a big success, too. I’m looking forward to the next one already.

Hehe, I’ll give it some thought. Thank you for coming today, anyway!

The twins leave.

Hey, Lydie! Wanna go to Soleil Street? I got the feeling we’ll find something great there!

Sure thing! Let’s go!

There, the twins chance upon…

The Puppetmaster’s Passion

Huh? Sue, did you hear anything?

Nope, not a thing…

:moreevil: Hahaaha!

There! What was that sound? The wind?

No, it can’t be the wind. It sounds more like a ghost!

Ah, I’ve been doing so well not thinking about ghosts! Not here in the city, surely!

Ah, Mr. Fritz! A ghost! There’s a ghost somewhere around here!

A ghost? Oh dear, have I done it again?

Excuse me?

Come in.

But the ghost I heard was from your house! …But I don’t see any ghosts…

That’s because…

What! You’re the ghost, Mr. Fritz?

Yes. Well, I’m not actually a ghost, but the voice you heard was definitely me.

Huh. You look so cool when you stay silent, Mr. Fritz, but then you start talking about dolls…

I know, right? Drossel changes in the same way…

That’s right! We simply love dolls, that’s all!

Oh no! Looks like we switched him on again!

We travel around, because we want to make puppets and perform the ultimate puppet show! Our dream is to move the hearts of all, and spread wide the wonder of puppet theater!

W-Wow… I hope your dream will come true. Hahaha…

Ah! Sorry, I’m doing it again!

D-Don’t worry about us! We’re getting used to it now…

Ah! I’m being given the cold shoulder already? I need to do something about this habit!

Yeah, well… see you later, Mr. Fritz!

Anyway, we should probably take on some more requests.

Right! It’ll prove our worth, and put some more dough and rare materials in our pockets.

The twins go to the Castle Plaza, where they find…

The Playwright’s Autograph

Ah, I have a copy of your book, “Created Eyes”… Could you please sign it for me?

Yes, of course. Like this?

That’s lovely! I’ll treasure this forever! Thank you so much, Drossel!

Lucia seemed really excited! What was that all about?

Oh, you saw that?

Yes, we did. You signed something for her?

Have you published a book, Drossel? You did say that you write things, right?

Sorry, girls, can you give me some room? I’m still not used to all this attention…

Ah! Sorry…

Haha! Lydie can’t help but get like this around authors.

No worries! But yes, I did have a book published a while back. It’s called “Created Eyes”. It was pretty well-received, so sometimes I get fans coming up to me like that.

Wow, really? What kind of book is it?

Ready for this? A romance about puppets in a puppet shop! Forbidden love between puppets from rival shops is the best part, I think.

Hahaha, you certainly have a theme, don’t you! Right, Lydie?

Really? Of course, I’ll give you a copy!

Great! Thank you! I’ll read it as soon as I get home!

It’s no good… She’s got the bug already. These bookworks, I don’t know what to do with them! Although I’m wondering about it myself now… I’ll just have Lydie tell me what it’s about later. After we choose our requests from the Notice Board!

Meanwhile, at the Garden of Merk…

Wow! The ultimate beauty! Hey, hello there!

You mean me?

Mathias picks up Liane

Oh, my! How lovely! I’m sorry, but I already have someone whom I love very much.

You do? Then what cursed trick of fate is this! If only we had met just a little bit sooner! Who is it, then? Tell me the name of the fiend who stole your heart!

No problem. It’s my sister!

Oh. Great. I’m real happy for… wait.

Hold on. Your sister?

Yes! She’s as cute as can be! She feels so good to hug and she smells so nice! She’s so naive and innocent, but recently she’s been trying to look more mature! Ah, which is even cuter, you know, I just want to protect her from the entire world! Ah! Just talking about her has made me want to see her again! Firis! Firis, I’m coming!

Ah, I finally understand. That’s the sister of Firis who I’ve heard so much about. She’s just as passionate! Like big sister, like little sister, I guess. Hahaha! …I can’t even feel sad over this anymore!

Part 5-4: Learning Curves

One morning…

The Twins in Tandem

At this time of day? You really don’t have a job, do you, Mathias?

Sue, this isn’t doing the poor guy any good. We need to find a job for him!

I’ve already told you! I’m not unemployed! I’m a Knight, which just means I’m off duty a lot!

Off duty, that’s what you’re calling it? Slacking off, you mean?

Gah, enough! Why do you think so little of me, Lydie?

For all sorts of reasons. Never mind that. Why are you here, anyway? It’s rare for you to just visit.

Well, I’m getting interested in alchemy. I thought I’d see you work.

Oh. Well then… I don’t have a problem with that.

OK, you handle the synthesis, Lydie. I’ll make some tea.

Thanks! Come on then, Mathias. Over here.

To the cauldron?

Yes. First, add the materials and adjust the temperature of the cauldron.

Wow, it really is just a big cauldron! I can’t believe all that stuff comes out of this.

Hahaha, at the beginning I thought so too. Right. Now we mix everything inside…

Right… And it starts to smoke. There’s a lot to learn, isn’t there!

Lydie, are you- woah! Gyah! I got tea on my foot! Ow, ow, ow, that’s hot!

Hey, Sue! Are you alright? What am I saying, I’m not OK either! This is going to explode!

After the twins finish cleaning up…

That’s a taste of synthesis for you, anyway. Now I will pour the tea.

Uwah. We should have done these things one at a time to begin with.

Hehehe, they’re like two halves of a single person.

To think we’d embarrass ourselves in front of Mathias like that…

Yeah. We’ve a lot to learn. Speaking of which…

You were also thinking of visiting Firis’ atelier, right?

Yeah! Even before I knew she was a certified alchemist, I thought she was something special.

We can learn something by watching her in action!

Alchemy of the Mysterious Journey

Firis, we’re coming in!

Welcome! Come on in!

Ah, sorry, you’re synthesizing? Oh, but that might actually be perfect…

What? Perfect? Don’t tell me, now that I’m vulnerable while synthesizing, that you’re going to…

Where did that come from? We want to watch, Firis, and learn from you!

What, that’s all! You’re welcome to do that! Watch all you like!

Wow… what is she even doing?

I don’t know, but I can tell it’s something incredible!

Her form is amazing! You can tell she’s been at this for a while!

Wow. That’s all I can say. You made that amazingly complex item without even hesitating!

Totally different from us. Why is that? The benefit of experience?

Maybe not… I’ve only been an alchemist for five years. I collected ores, when I was back home.

What?! Five years?! That’s about the same as us! Firis, you’ve already taken the certification exam, right?

Ah, that’s right. I passed it about one year after I started. Haha!

One year?… H-How did you manage that?

Well, I studied as I traveled, and resolved the problems of lots of different people, I guess?

That’s it? I mean… That doesn’t sound like you did anything all that special?

Uwah, I know you’re a genius, Firis, but this is still a bitter pill to swallow!

If only Dad had done a better job of teaching us! Gah. Sorry to have bothered you.

The twins leave, thoroughly dejected.

Hey! You’re leaving already? Hey, girls! Come on!

Ah? Were those long-faced girls I saw leaving Firis’ atelier none other than Lydie and Sue? Well… I might as well drop in myself!

Ah! Lucia, welcome! What can I help you with today?

Well, I can’t say this too loudly, but I want you to teach me some alchemy. I hate to admit it, but you’re better than me. I’d very much like to learn from you.

Sure, no problem. I’m not sure what I can teach you, though… Actually, I know! I was just about to do some synthesis, so maybe watch me do that?

Please!

First, you throw in the materials with a splash!

Next turn up the temp of the cauldron, see it roar! Then mix it up, mix mix mix!

Splash? Roar? Mix mix mix? Are you joking?

Then wait for it to cool down, and we’re done!

Hahaha, this is how I synthesize. Did you learn anything?

Nope, not at all! I didn’t have a clue what you were doing?

What? I’m sorry! I know how to do it but I’m not good at teaching it.

Meanwhile, at the twins’ atelier…

…Oh? Summons from the castle?

Can it be? Has Mireille recognized our abilities and decided to give us the next exam already? Let’s go!

The twins go to the castle.

…Wait…

The Next Exam

M-Mireille? You have an extremely evil-looking look on your face!

Don’t I just! I’m planning something really evil, that’s why.

What?! Drop our rank?! Why would you do such a thing?

Hah! This is payback for all those things you said to me before. I was so, so embarrassed!

Tyrant! This is an abuse of power!

What are you talking about? I’m just testing you, following the rules of the system!

Gah, this is hopeless! It’s like hitting a puni with a stick!

We can’t outmaneuver her… Just give up. Come on then, Mireille. What is the test?

I want you to make Zettel! The highest quality you can, or I won’t accept it!

A tougher question than I expected… We have to do it! We don’t want to lose our rank!

Bah… I guess we can part with these.

Mireille, we made the Zettel. Is this good enough?

Yes, you’ve passed! Although, to be honest, there’s no test to pass!

…What?

Hehe! You mocked me, so I thought I’d get a little payback! I wanted this Zettel for memo paper. It’s just so comfortable to write on!

T-That’s it?! All that worry for nothing?!

I’m sorry. But now that the jig is up… Here’s your reward.

1800 Coll received.

Hold on. All we did was make some Zettel… Are you sure you want to give us this much?

Yes. As an apology for tricking you. Go ahead and take it.

Thank you! If you just wanted memo paper, though, does it have to be Zettel? I just use any scrap of paper I can get my hands on…

Ah, well, you know what they say. Nothing’s better than Bettel!

Hah…

You see, nothing’s better than…

We heard you! We heard you, no need to say it again!

Good. Funny, wasn’t it? Pretty witty on my part, I think you’ll agree!

Hah. You’re so cool the rest of the time, Mireille, but sometimes you just…

We should write this one on an official notice. It’s so good everyone in the city should know it!

Uh… Please don’t…

Lydie… let’s go home. We’ve got some more jobs to do… and if we finish them early enough we can catch some coffee on Lune Street afterward.

The twins go home, and that afternoon outside their atelier…

The Real World

If it isn’t Mireille and Mathias! Are you having a meal together?

Yes. My sister’s idea. Why don’t you join us?

That sounds great! I’m in the mood for something really delicious!

The twins walk over and dig in, but…

Ah, sorry. I love it as spicy as possible. Here, you should be able to eat this one.

Seriously, you’re a lightweight who loves spicy food! How do you have a single friend?

Mireille, you’re totally drunk, aren’t you? You’ve been drinking nonstop since we got here.

That’s only because Mathias won’t drink. I have to cover us both!

Uwah, this is bad! She’s not making any sense at all now!

Hmm… Wow, that’s delicious! It’s hot, but not overly spicy. Just right!

See? You get it. These peppers are carefully grown to keep the flavor while dialing back the spice.

You don’t say? You’re pretty knowledgeable, Mathias!

Don’t get sucked in, Lydie. His knowledge is just one of the things he uses to pick up women.

Suuuure, suuuure. What good such superficial knowledge will do you, though, I don’t know! Aaaahahaha!

Uwah. She’s a real pain when she’s drunk.

Hahaha. She works so hard the rest of the time, I guess this is the price for that.

:distonk: I-I’m sorry! I can’t take so much!

Whaaaaaat? Isn’t that about what we spent?

Sorry, Mireille, but it’s probably a tenth of that? Maybe less?

You see? Sister doesn’t have a clue about the real world herself!

Hahaha, looks that way!

Mathias has acquired the skill “Sky Guardian”.

Sky Guardian - Increases DEF.

That night at the castle…

No, really, you tried to give the barkeep 10,000 Coll! TEN THOUSAND! You should have seen the look on everyone else’s faces!

Whaaaat? Is that so unusual?

Really, you have no clue about the outside world sitting behind your desk like this!

Come on! I’m not sheltered! I know, I’ll get the twins to back me up on this!

The next morning…

Summons? Again? What now?

Ah… might as well go and check. And hope Mireille’s sobered up.

The twins go to the castle.

Say, twins, I’ve got something to ask you.

The World Outside the Castle

Yes.

Uwah, in perfect unison, too! I’ve been feeling it, but I guess you’re right. It’s too extreme, isn’t it? Not being allowed to leave the castle until I’m grown!

Hahaha. I guess there’s no helping that?

Maybe, but that’s a bit too clean and easy for me… I’m in line for the throne, after all. In order to learn more about the world, I’m thinking of going to do a homestay somewhere.

What? With who, Mireille?

Uwah!

Hold it, Lydie! What was that noise for?

That’s not a “homestay”! I don’t know what that is!

R-Really? Then I think I have to change my plans.

Huh?

If nothing else through all the text and screenshots thus far, I'm glad that I've at least been able to communicate that Roger is a deadbeat dad who even when he tries to help in his own bizarre way, just ends up hurting. Which makes the returning alchemists from Atelier Firis very welcome, since they play a much-needed supportive role in the twins' lives that Roger has obviously been unfit to provide thus far. Though,

Part 5-5: Pranks and Powers

Right, Lydie. Are you ready?

Yeah. I’ll do my best.

Growing Pains

Phew. How was that? What do you think?

Hmmmm. I think you’re finally getting some biceps?

Finally! I am working out every day!

Five sit-ups and three push-ups isn’t really what I’d call working out…

Huh?

No, I didn’t say a thing. I think all the fighting we’ve been doing has helped you, too. You definitely won’t be defeated by a Puni anymore, for example! They could KO you in a flash before!

C-Come on, a Puni? I’ve never been defeated by a Puni! Never!

Haha, I saw it! A single attack! But don’t panic. You just get stronger at your own pace, Lydie.

Sue! Thank you, I will!

Like I said, that isn’t really what I’d call working out… but at least she’s trying…

Speaking of fighting! Someone in town wanted some Chaotic Dirt. The memo on the Notice Board said that we can get it by beating that giant black monster in the Luminous Ice Grotto.

Ehh? I’d rather not… but then again, work is work.

Let’s get this started!

I’ll protect us all!

Okay!

I’ve been editing out all the worst of the typos in the game so far, but no hiding this one!

I’ll use this move of theirs…

With this ore… Take this!

Did she just…? Argh!

Raaaaagh!

We did it! …Wait, Sue?

We need a word with Lucia once we’re outta here!

Later that day, at Atelier Borthayre…

Hey, Lucia. Can I ask you something?

Thievery or Flattery?

That’s right. Stole it right out from under you!

Wow! You just admit it!

Do I have anything to feel guilty about? Think, for a moment. The liberal “borrowing” of techniques has always been a thing. Especially useful ones! In other words, me stealing it is proof that your technique is good! Worth stealing!

I can’t accept that, you dummy! Although it’s not like we were hiding it.

Yeah, that’s true. The more people who can use it, the easier battles will be, too.

Fine. Lucia! For your crimes, just make sure you work hard!

Ohohoho! Of course I will! You can leave everything to me. Observing Lucia Style Battle Mix will be to see true art in motion! Ohohohoho!

Sigh. Anyway, Lydie, there’s more things we can make to help us gathering in the field.

Gathering Gloves and Gags

Let’s start with Gathering Gloves! They can help us find more rare materials in the field!

Shame we have neither the acumens nor the catalysts to make the best possible gloves… oh well.

Ta-dah! Check out these special gathering gloves! We can get all sorts of rare materials with these!

In theory, sure. But they look just like regular gloves…

Ah! Don’t touch them with your bare hands!

I’ve used a special processing on the palms of the gloves. They stick to anything rare they touch. I guess that’s good news for you, anyway! The gloves think you are rare, Sis! Hehe!

Hey, if you’ve got time to laugh then you’ve got time to help! Uggggh, get these things off me!

Gah, get off me! Waaah! I can’t eat like this! Waaah!

Later, after Sue gets bored of this spectacle…

Hey, Lydie, remember our old hobby?

Fishing? We… oh. Right! We can synthesize a fishing rod now!

One synthesis without meaningful effect thresholds later…

An Old Hobby

Hehe, I’m glad, Lydie. That means we can add some fish to the dinner menu tonight!

Yep! We’ve got confidence in our fishing skills, after all.

All those days, suffering without money, holding our rods over the water in the hope of eating some fish! What was it they called us? The Merveille Fishing Twins?

We had to pawn that rod in the end, so we haven’t been fishing for a while… But my skills from that time remain intact!

Muwahahahahaha! Anyway, I was thinking of doing some shopping on Soleil Street. Wanna go?

On Soleil Street, the twins find…

Buying Ideas

Ah, excuse us! Drossel?

Hey, girls! What’s up? Here to eat?

No, we were just passing by. What about you, Drossel? What are you doing here?

Shopping, of course! There are so many great things on sale here in Merveille! Hahaha. Which means I’ve bought too much again!

Oh. How much did you spend?

About 30,000 Coll…

Sue… I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration.

But it’s still a lot of money. And you can afford it, Drossel? Won’t this make Mr. Fritz mad?

No, it’s fine! Reading lots of different books is best for a writer.

R-Really? I can see him at least sighing a bit over this…

No, it will be fine. Hey, there’s something I want to ask you. Do you know somewhere fun to do shopping? Can you tell me?

What, you’re going to do more shopping? Uwah! I’m jealous. I want to be able to spend too!

No, Sue, you can’t. Right, well, on this street there’s a place called the Corneria Enterprise…

The Corneria Enterprise… Right, thanks!

That’s not the way! Ah, she really gets lost, doesn’t she?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Drossel heading in the correct direction toward anything… Right?

Speaking of Corneria, it’s been a while since we visited her last. She’s just up the street, so let’s go see what’s up!

Trading and Logistics

Corneria, do you have a problem? Maybe we can help you!

We solve problems for everyone in the city! At least, that’s what we tell ourselves.

Hehe, is that so? In which case, let me try out your services. I want to bring in new products from my hometown, but it’s a bit too far away. Watches and autographs are one thing, but cakes and vegetables won’t last the trip.

I see. I wonder if we could do something with alchemy? Like, a portable ice room?

Oh, good idea. That would stop things from spoiling!

Yes, that sounds like quite a good idea. Can I hire you to make that?

Yes, leave it to us! We’ll make it so you can bring in all the delicious cakes!

The twins run off toward Lune Street.

Ah, well, this is about more than cakes… no matter. I’ll just wait and see what you manage.

Ooh, Lydie, should we drop by Ilmeria’s before doing the job for Cory?

Hehe! Let’s!

L’s

What’s the matter, Punyu? Are you hungry? I suppose you must be. Hehe… I’m in a good mood today, so I’ll make you something extra delicious. It’ll be worth the wait.

Punipuni!!

My word, did you see that, my dear? Our beloved teacher Ilmeria has a mile wide smile.

I did indeed see that. She really does love that Puni.

Hehe, sorry. We just wanted to have some tea with our teacher…

And we simply happened to come across such a hila-… I mean, fascinating scene…

Ooh… Ooh… Don’t you mock me! Don’t make fun of me like that!

We would never! We would never make fun of you! It’s completely normal to care for your pets.

Exactly. Besides… When you’re so head over heels for your Puni, you act in such a classical Ilmeria-like way!

What’s that supposed to mean?! You are making fun of me after all!

Haha… But Ilmeria… What was it that made you decide to keep a pet in the first place?

Oh, yes. All of a sudden you just seemed to have one. What happened?

…I was lonely.

…Huh?

I… I was lonely, alright?! I hated coming back to an empty atelier every night! That’s why… That’s why I wanted a Puni to be here to wait for me at the very least. I-Is there something wrong with that?!

Ilmeria! Please feel free to come and visit us anytime you like! We’ll have a warm meal waiting for you!

That’s right! Come everyday… In fact, why not come and live with us?!

Feel free to rely on us whenever you need us! After all, we’re your loyal students!

Yes! Come here, beloved teacher, and give us a hug!

Punipuni…

Hahaha! We’ll be back later, Ilmeria!

Still though… it’s not like we have much to feed her with when she does drop in.

Maybe we got a little carried away. Anyway, Ice Box time!

We have looooots of Ice Bombs ready, right?

Yeah! We just need some water, wood and hidden power to round it off.

Now let’s take it to Corneria!

Mmm! Time for all the delicious cakes from wherever she’s from!

The Merchant’s Trademark

Oh, it’s so cold! I could even carry raw meat around using this!

That’s great! Now we’ll get all the cakes!

Hehe, I do have to thank you somehow, don’t I? What would be a fitting reward?

Y-You don’t have to do anything special, please. We don’t need anything…

Trust is an important part of my business. I need to thank you somehow… Ah, I know what to do! I’ll start my volume retail service!

Volume retail? What’s that?

Here’s the thing. I have a unique ability. Sue, will you lend me an item for a moment?

Thank you. Now to get to it… Hm… Haaaha, teyaaah! There, what do you think?

No, this is my power. I have the ability to copy objects.

Copy objects? I can’t believe it. How is such a thing even possible?

It’s a very rare power, apparently. It’s made me very popular.

I bet! Being able to copy items out of thin air like that? That’s almost too convenient!

Very well, Corneria. Can we ask you to provide us with that volume retail, too?

Yes, of course. I’ll give your requests priority, so feel free to pile them on me! No problem!

Oh! One more thing, Corneria. The items you copy… are they just like their originals?

Yes! Right down to their quality and traits. …Oh, and prices will scale with the quality of whatever you want me to copy, as well as what the items themselves are. I won’t charge you as much for copying wheat as I would for gems, for instance.

That’s only fair. Hmm… I can think of something I want you to copy already!

Oh? Go ahead!

Ooh, that Red Neutralizer that we got to have the effects of gunpowder? Having a ton of those on hand will be super useful for making more bombs!

And we could always use more Moffcloth to help forge better armor.

Okay… Moffcloth and Red Neutralizer. Give me time and I’ll have even more of these items ready and waiting for you!

Part 5-6: The Mysterious Boy’s Omen

The reputation of our atelier has improved again. I think maybe we’re ready to take the next exam…

The E Rank Exam

Well then, off we go!

Interesting. Your reputation has grown quite a lot. I think you might be ready for the exam.

Awesome, cause we’re ready to rock and roll!

Very well. Then, without further ado, here’s your next task!

An investigation into the odd weather we’ve been having? There have been a lot of storms recently.

Indeed. Too many, I think you’ll agree. Will you help with looking into it?

Of course. This is hardly our specialty, though, and we don’t know anything about lightning!

No worries! We only need you to synthesize a device to measure lightning power and place it somewhere.

E Rank Test Problem received.

Do that, then bring it here to me. It can give you a bit of a spark, so be careful!

Isn’t it a failure if that happens? Ah, well, no matter. This sounds urgent, so we’ll begin posthaste.

The twins go home.

The Finest Lightning Finder

Even aside from our exam, I think we need to make this Lightning Finder as potent as possible. I get the feeling it’ll tell us a lot about the many storms we’ve been getting.

First, we need a Lightning Bomb. A very high quality one.

This should be more than good enough! Now for the Lightning Finder itself, we need that Lightning Bomb, some Steel Balls, and two more heaps of metal.

Good, the measuring device is complete! Next we have to take this to Mireille.

That’s right…

What’s wrong? You don’t look all that happy.

I’m worried about the thunder. There have been a lot of storms recently. Both Mireille and Firis are looking into them now, aren’t they! I just hope it isn’t all some kind of bad omen.

Huh, you’re overthinking things. This device is intended to provide the answers, anyway! There’s no need to worry. Let’s deliver the device and see what happens next.

Yes, you’re right. I’m just overthinking things. I’m sure Mireille knows what she’s doing with this, anyway.

The twins return to the castle the next morning.

A Delivery and an Omen

Great work, twins! Now we should be able to shed some light on the lightning problem!

Yikes… Ahem! So, now we just go out and set it up?

Then we’ll do that right away. See you later, Mireille.

The twins leave.

Not even a smile… Shed some light on this lightning problem! I thought that was pretty good…

We’re supposed to put this thing up in Braisewest, right?

Right. It’ll take us a while to get there, so let’s hurry!

At Braisewest…

We need to place the machine around here. Where, exactly?

Good question. A place to put the device, a place to put the device…

Uh, sorry. Who are you?

Who I am is a trifling question, Lydie and Sue of Lune Street.

What? You know us?

With all the rumors, how could I not? I’ve been wanting to meet you both.

O-okay…

You need to stop your futile struggle and focus only on that which can still be changed. That’s all.

And he’s gone… Just who was that?

Don’t ask me. With all that talk about the future… Maybe a fortune teller? Anyway, back to the task at hand!

Of course, of course. We can’t afford to forget why we’re here!

Let’s just stick it in here… hyah! There we go!

That’s it, all finished! We’ve completed the task!

Great! Let’s go and report to Mireille. I hope she doesn’t try another terrible pun on us…

That boy just now… Hmm. I’m sure I’ve met him before somewhere, but I can’t place it… Am I just imagining things?

Music: Twin Birds Flying through the Wilderness
Music: Twin Birds Flying through the Wilderness -Night-

Still though, since we’re here… Braisewest was bountiful a long time ago, but it looks desolate now because it got ravaged by lightning.

Right. That’s probably why Mireille wanted us to set the Lightning Finder up here specifically. …I wonder what this all means? Let’s report to her first thing in the morning. Whatever morning comes after we arrive back in Merveille.

Two days later…

The Next Mysterious Painting…?

:siren:Flower stamp condition:siren: : Lightning Finder with quality upwards of 60.

You’ve placed the device. Thank you. Which means… Yes! You’ve received E Rank, twins! Congratulations!

Thank you, Mireille! Which means…

What is the Mysterious Painting this time? I just can’t wait to see it!

No way! But you made a promise! You can’t break a promise!

I’ve got my eyes on the next one. It’s just the negotiations are dragging on.

Which means… I’m sorry, but can you wait a little bit longer?

Uh, very well. We can’t get selfish, can we! We’ll be patient.

That’s very good of you.

I’ve got an idea! Lydie, Sue. Why don’t you try looking for a painting by yourselves?

What do you mean, Mathias? We can do that?

I’ve heard rumors that someone brought a large painting into the city recently. And that there’s another world inside it. In other words, a Mysterious Painting.

I see! If we negotiate with them directly, then…

We might be able to get a new Mysterious Painting! Do you want to give it a try?

Hehehe! I know all about negotiations and strategy! You can count me in!

Sounds like a plan. Good luck! We’ll keep up with our negotiations, too… that is, Mathias will.

What? Me again?

Yes! Now, over here!

Right. First we need to find the person who has the Painting. Who collects all the best rumors?

Maybe Sister Grace, who talks to a lot of people? Or Lucia and Liane, who run shops? Let’s go and see them. We can think some more if that doesn’t turn anything up.

Let’s start with Lucia! Atelier Borthayre is right there, after all.

Lucia! We’re coming in!

Ah, Lydie and Sue! What brings you here today?

We wanted to know if you’ve heard of anyone bringing a large painting into the city.

Hmm, a large painting? A large painting… Sorry, I haven’t heard any talk.

It was worth asking, I guess. Sorry for interrupting your work.

I don’t mind an interruption from you two. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.

Let’s try the church next, then.

The twins go to the church.

Sister Grace! Have you heard about anyone carrying a large painting around?

Someone carrying a large painting around? Sorry, I haven’t heard about anything like that.

I see. Sorry for asking such a weird question.

Oh, no need to apologize. Come and see me any time.

That leaves Liane, then.

Come to think of it, anyone who enters or leaves the city through the gate would have to pass by Liane’s shop.

Right! That’s quite some real estate she’s landed. And hopefully some juicy info, too!

The twins go to Liane’s shop. And I’d rather not spell out its name again.

Ah, Lydie and Sue! Need something?

Liane! Have you heard of someone bringing a large painting into the city?

Someone bringing a large painting into the city? Yes, I know who you want. People in a tavern I frequent were talking about it. Some male alchemist, seen with a large painting.

An alchemist! What kind of person was he?

Apparently he has an atelier on Soleil Street.

You seem to know a lot about him, from only hearing his name in a tavern!

Hehe, I did some checking of my own. Information is the lifeblood of both hunting and retail! I don’t have an exact location on his atelier, though. You’ll have to search for it yourselves.

Thank you, Liane! You really helped us out!

Right then. Let’s go look for Alt’s Atelier on Soleil Street.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough! Off to Soleil Street!

The twins go to Soleil Street.

Oh?

A Quick Interruption

:eng99: There’s plenty of materials out there, but they are just too expensive.

I see. That’s been a big help, thank you.

The two part ways.

What’s this, little Lydie? You’re not jealous, are you? Hahah, how sweet!

Sue. Go ahead and shoot Mathias.

Sure thing! Where do you want it?

Sorry, sorry, I wasn’t doing anything like that! I wasn’t trying to pick her up!

Oh? Then what were you doing?

I was asking about the state of the market. The reports we get aren’t enough on their own.

Wow. I guess you can be serious, Mathias.

Hey, I’m always serious! I’m focused, most of the time, you know! I realize well enough I can’t see the real world from inside the castle. That’s why I walk the city, to see the truth. And most importantly… I’m also next in line for the throne. I need to build my knowledge for the future.

I’m sorry, then. I thought you were just a hopeless do-nothing, like our dad.

That’s not easy to hear, but at least you have changed your mind now.

I’m sorry, too. I’ve underestimated you too. You’ve been working hard, Mathias!

Hehe, glad to clear that up! I don’t mind if you want to show me a little more respect… ah!

I can’t believe him! Just as I was ready to change my opinion, even a little.

Yeah. I guess Mathias will always be Mathias. Anyway, we have an atelier to find, much as I’d love to hang around and watch him get rejected yet again.

We didn’t find it passing by Hagel’s, or Fritz and Drossel’s, or Corneria’s. Maybe it’s further up the street. …Oh? Hmm…

The Mysterious Boy’s Mysterious Painting

Lydie, what’s wrong? Did you hear that painting voice again?

Hahaha, I think so. It was coming from over there.

In which case, this is the place! If you heard the voice, there must be a Mysterious Painting here! Right! Hello? Anyone home?

The twins walk in.

Music: Scars (Lydie & Suelle Ver.)

Oh? Guests?

Ah, I remember you! That means… you’re Alt?

Who told you that name? Well… No matter. Yes, I’m Alt.

So… What brings you here?

Ah, well, we heard that you were seen carrying a large painting around, you see…

You mean this? It really was a pain to get in here.

I’m sure it was, Alt. How would you feel about us taking it out of here? As it turns out, this painting is actually cursed! Just owning it will make all of your hair…

Sure, you can have it.

What? T-That was quick! You aren’t kidding, right?

Why are you so surprised, Sue?

Because no one normally gives up something so easily! I wouldn't! Never!

Honest to a fault. Of course, I’m not going to give it up for free. You can take it on one condition. I want to join you when you investigate it.

Investigate it? I’m sorry, I’ve no idea…

No need to play coy. I know about Mysterious Paintings and your little trips inside them. If you take me with you, I don’t mind handing over this painting. What do you say?

Very well. That sounds reasonable enough. It can’t hurt to have someone else along.

Thank you. Restoring this painting by myself would be a pain, and I want to visit as many worlds as I can, too. I’ll take it over to the castle then. See you there.

Alt goes on ahead, Mysterious Painting in tow.

Hahaha, that’s great! He handed it over with almost no fuss at all.

No fuss, indeed. He seems competent anyway, so he’ll probably be a help inside the paintings. Now, to the castle, Lydie. We have to prepare to restore that painting!

The twins go to the gallery, where they find Alt waiting.

There you are. This is the painting I found. “The Great Cascades of Anfel.”

After all that fuss, you were the one who found it, Alt! You could have just let me know.

Haha, am I obligated to do that? Now then, both of you, please get to work on restoring it. I’ll wait here until the work is finished. Please don’t take too long.

So all we need is some gunpowder, sand, oil and hidden power. Simple enough!

Alt’s waiting, and I’m sure that the others are raring to get inside. So without any further ado…

The twins return to the gallery.

Entering the Inferno

I’ll write all of that up later, anyway. For now, this means we can go inside, right?

Good. In which case, I want to get in there as quickly as possible.

Hahaha, we’ll get ready as quickly as we can. Please just wait a little longer.

Hmmm…

I’m not sure. I could swear that I’ve met you somewhere before.

I think you’re imagining things. I don’t remember you at all.

Really? That sounds suspicious to me, too.

Come now, Firis. You’re unsettling our Alt. Leave him be.

Fine, fine. I’m sure I’ll remember eventually. Anyway, shall we depart?

We’re ready! Off we go, into the world of the painting!

Finally! I’ve waited so lo-ohhhhhhhhhhh!

Music: In the Sea of Fire -Lydie-

The endless, tumbling flow of molten rock scorches the sky, parches the land, becoming a sea of fire.

Backed by dragon’s roars, this world heads into destruction. Will you stand witness to that fate?

It’s so hot! Where are we, an oven? Couldn’t we arrive somewhere a little cooler?

It really is a world swallowed by magma. Just like the painting showed.

Alt, you look so cool and composed! I think I’m about to melt on the spot!

I was expecting something like this, so I came prepared. That’s all.

No can do. If I give it to you then I’ll be the one all hot.

Hahaha, I guess you’re right. Shall we get moving, then?

Might not be a bad idea. I’m going to end up baked if I have to stand here any longer.

We’ll be in for an easy time if baking is all we have to worry about. Come on!

Yeah Alt being enigmatic and highly knowledgeable about alchemy and weirdly interested in the twins would be a red flag, but given what we're playing, all those characteristics just make him the weird well-meaning dick of the twins' friend circle.

Part 5-7: In Want of Saviors

Music: In the Sea of Fire -Suelle-

Oh, up ahead! There’s a… village?

That’s not all there is!

Superheroes

A type of fairy or elemental? Seeing as we’re inside a painting, something the artist made up?

In any case, let’s try talking to it. Hey, you there! What are you doing?

What am I doing? Running away, of course! Hold on, humans? Humans!

C-Cooked? What do you mean?

You don’t know? The Fire Dragon from the depths is on a rampage, making all these volcanoes erupt! There’s nothing we can do now! This whole region is about to be swallowed by magma!

What?! That could really happen?

Don’t ask me! We just have to run for it! This is my homeland, sure but we still have to run!

What should we do?! It sounds like this world is about to end!

No, we can’t do that… We haven’t seen anything in here yet. And anyway… We’ve got people here about to lose their home! We have to do something to help them, Lydie.

Hahaha, somehow I knew you were going to say that. You, eh…

I’m not “you”, I’m Fuoco! Don’t you know how to use someone’s name, human?

Says the one calling us “human”! I’m Sue, and this is Lydie.

Sue and Lydie. Very well. What do you want, then? I really am busy running away at the moment!

Fuoco. You don’t want this place to be destroyed, do you? We’re going to help you with that.

Hehe, we’re alchemists, after all! You can leave this problem with us!

Alchemists? What does that even mean?

You need to stop just making stuff up…

Superheroes! Lydie and Sue, the superheroes! In which case, yes please! Help us! I can’t let you do all the work, though. I’ll go with you! Hehehe… after all… If this doesn’t work out, we’ll all melt in the river of lava together!

Uwah! That’s a bit graphic. Don’t worry, we won’t let that happen.

First, we need to investigate the area. Let’s carry on.

Tell me, Fuoco! Do you live in this village?

Yes! Or at least, I did until the Fire Dragon came.

Can you lead us to the Fire Dragon? We’re alchemists! We can save your homeland from it!

Please! Just go up the stairs to the northwest…

Sure thing! Toward… Alvaria Way?

Right that way!

Hehe, Fuoco!

What is it, Firis?

Breaking Bread and Boundaries

She’s got a gift, I’ll give her that. Meanwhile, over here…

Alt! Just don’t dissect poor Fuoco, alright?

What? Ah, of course not. I know the boundaries.

I’m not sure that you do… Ah, Fuoco, are you hungry? Do you want some sweets?

Sweets? What are those?

I guess you wouldn’t know, would you! The outside world is completely unknown to you, I suppose.

I could try to explain… but you’ll get it once you try some! Here, Fuoco, eat this.

Munch… slurp… Wow! Wow! Delicious! This is delicious! Sweets are delicious! Please, give me more!

Uwah, hold on! I’ve got some more, just stop tugging on me!

She’s one of the family now. Glad to see them getting along.

What happens when a creature inside a painting eats? Does it offer any nutritional value?

…Being passionate about research is fine, but don’t take it too far.

Hahaha! All this activity brings out so many memories. This is fun!

Uwah!

I bet that fire attacks will be really effective in this world!

Really effective!

Can you keep up?

Here I go!

Interesting… so Alt uses that book to summon weapons…

And that’s a wrap!

Wow, everyone! That was so cool!

Right? Now let’s get back on track!

This sky sure is something. It’s as ashen as the land we walk on.

It really does look like a world about to die…

But Fuoco trusts us to stop that from happening. So we have to press forward!

It’s impressive! And terrifying.

Hey Lydie, we keep seeing these pillars with writing on them. Can you read it?

Hmm… I have no idea what they’re saying.

I don’t recognize the writing either. Maybe it’s in a language the artist made up wholecloth?

Bah. Either way, we don’t have the time to dwell on it!

Charting an Approach

The Fire Dragon came “from the depths”, you said. Do you mean here?

Yeah! Just up ahead…

Gulp! Are you ready, everyone? We’re about to enter the Fire Dragon’s lair!

Hey, Fuoco. What can you tell us about this Fire Dragon?

Let me see. It’s big, for a start! It could swallow me whole! It’s also very violent, spitting fire everywhere! It’ll frizzle all your hair in an instant!

That last part makes it sound little worse than a bad barber.

Fuoco. Don’t worry. We’re going to defend this world!

Thank you! Thank you so much for all your help!

No problem! That said, what exactly should we do? Get the Fire Dragon to leave?

That might work, but maybe we should just defeat it? It probably won’t leave if we just ask.

Probably not. Drive it off, or defeat it, then. Those seem like our two choices at the moment.

We’ll leave the decision up to the two of you. Take whichever approach you think is best.

Go this way if you want to play it safe!

Plan A-Feed the Dragon

Uwah, it’s bigger than I was expecting! It’s going to be tough to defeat that.

Hmmm. If we don’t have what it takes to beat it, then… We need to find out what’s making it so aggressive.

What could it be? Lydie, what makes you simply go crazy?

Me? Let me think… When Dad wastes our money again?

That gets me angry too! But it’s not like money’s an object to the Fire Dragon. So… What else? When I’m hungry too, I guess?

Hey, me too! Maybe the Fire Dragon is hungry?

Fuoco. What does that dragon normally eat?

Good question. I’ve seen it eating rocks lying around here?

Hmm. The Fire Dragon eats rocks? Then if we help it fill up on some tasty stones…

Right! It might be satisfied and fly off somewhere else!

Interesting. I think I can help! Collect some stones and give them to me. I’ll go and spread them in front of the dragon. I’m very fast at running away, don’t worry!

In which case, we’ll go and collect some. Just wait here a moment.

So… Kaen Stones! We can find those in these molten rocks.

That dragon looks like it has a massive appetite. So we’d better fetch plenty!

After a real bug hunt for the Kaen Stones…

Plan B/C-Icing the Dragon

Uwah, so many? I’ll go and get started!

Hehehe, I ran in there, scattered them around and then ran for it! Well? What’s happening?

Oh dear. It looks like eating those stones has just given it more energy.

Uwah, I’m sorry, Fuoco. That plan was a complete failure.

N-No, no need to worry. Everyone fails sometimes.

Well said, Fuoco. Failure is just a step towards success in all things, be it alchemy or anything else.

OK! In which case, let’s try something else. How about trying to drive it off? It’s even called the Fire Dragon. It likes fire! In which case, we hit it with something cold!

Ah, that’s not a bad idea. Like giving something spicy to a person with a sweet tooth!

That’s the idea, anyway. We just need to do something it doesn’t like and get rid of it.

Lydie, great thinking! How do you come up with these plans so quickly? You can leave this to me, too! I’ll do something I’m sure that dragon will completely hate!

Try this, Fuoco!

Oh, this time it’s all cold! I’ll go and put this to good use!

Fuoco runs over…

Graaoooooow!

Phew. I ran back here as quickly as I could. Did it work?

Hmm. It seems to dislike it, but…

It simply wasn’t strong enough. We need to hit it with stronger cold, or even…

Stronger cold? We’ll need to think of some kind of a new item, then.

Thank you! I believe in all of you! Once you’ve made a colder item, bring it to me. Thank you so much for doing this!

The twins return to their atelier.

I got it! This should have the power to drive that dragon away! Double the ice bomb power, along with air, metal and hidden power… perfect!

Nicely done! Now to see see if it works…

These reaper-like monsters are real pieces of work… but we can take em!

Back on track!

I guess this is how you know we’re in a dragon’s lair… NOW, back on track!

Saviors

We can use this to drive off the Fire Dragon?

That’s right! This is our secret weapon to chase off the dragon once and for all!

I’m sure this will be enough to get the job done! Fuoco, now it’s up to you!

Very well. I’ll see you shortly!

Fuoco, good luck!

Go freeze his tail off!

With the Cold Wind Engine and the party’s best wishes in hand, Fuoco advances.

Take this! Taste all of our anger, and begone from this place!

Graaooooooow.

It… it worked!

Yes! You did it, Fuoco! The Fire Dragon has flown off!

Perfect! I’m so glad the item we made helped out. Congratulations, Fuoco!

Uwaaah! Now my homeland is safe!

Hey, come on. Heroes is one thing, Saviors is something else…

Haha, I don’t think so. You saved a world from destruction. That makes you Saviors, in my book!

He’s right. Seeing you both fighting so hard to save Fuoco’s world! You were so cool!

D-Do you really think so? Saviors! That still sounds a bit funny.

Hehe. I’ve got a gift for my two Saviors, then! My own personal treasure. I want you to have it!

Yeah! That’s our third set, then. Fuoco, thanks for this wonderful gift!

Surging Hell Fire Fragments received.

Phew. That appears to wrap that up then!

Yes. That should be enough for now. Shall we head back?

Sounds good. This world was a lot of fun too!

You’re all leaving? I’m really going to miss you.

Hahaha, don’t worry, Fuoco. We’ll come and see you again!

You will? Thank you so much! Do you promise?

Yes, we promise. We’ll see you again soon, Fuoco! Bye-bye!

Suelle has acquired the skill “Talent for Strategy”.
Talent for Strategy - Increase skill damage when acting as an Attacker.

Back in the gallery…

I’ll see you all later!

Ah, you’re all back! How was the painting?

Mathias and I can handle the debrief!

After all, it seems Alt wants a word with the twins.

The world in that painting was very interesting. Watching you two was very entertaining too.

What? Watching us was entertaining?

Yes. With your backs to the wall - or should I say, magma - you still didn’t back down.

I see… That almost sounds like a compliment?

It was. And I don’t give them often. I hope we can be friends. If there’s anything else I can do for you, I’ll happily lend you a hand. Anything at all.

Wow, are you sure? Thank you so much!

Think nothing of it. Observing you is going to be very productive for me too, I believe.

Observing… what, exactly? You’re going to get all weird on us, aren’t you?

Hey! That’s not what I meant at all!

Hah, so you’re all slimy as well, aren’t you, Alt? Why are all men like this?

No, I’m not! Listen! Please, listen to me!

That afternoon…

In Want of Saviors

Thank you. Let me take a look. Hmm… Wow, well, this is bad.

I know. A bit of a problem. Things are progressing faster than we expected.

Indeed. We’ll need to think of new steps we can take. Ah, I’m getting a headache already!

Sigh… we just finished staving off the apocalypse in the Great Cascades of Anfel, only to return to our own world and stare down an impending apocalypse here. Speaking of which, the girl who lives in that painting proclaimed the twins her “Saviors” for saving her world.

This is reminding me of "Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin". Magic paintings and a pair of twins who lived with their father who also happened to make the paintings. Playing that game, let's just say things didn't end well.

Edit: Also, outside the tutorials, I'm noticing a very big lack of gameplay explanation. I noticed you're acquiring a lot of recipes and materials without explaining what they do or why they're preferred. Have you gotten much outside of the story, or is everything kinda handed to you with the plot and some side-quests? Any strategies dealing with the monsters in each new area?

No matter how much paperwork I process, it never goes away. It only increases.
Aside from the introductory chapters I've been omitting most of the syntheses and collecting for fear of bloating the LP, and because I felt they weren't important; recipes also pop up after doing certain things (e.g. with the gathering gloves, it unlocked after picking up 30 items in Chapter 5, and other bombs are unlocked by collecting their respective ores) or from sidequests (Ilmeria giving the twins homework) or from buying books (all the gemstones from Liane's shop). And for the time being, stuff like components and traits are irrelevant for plot-related syntheses (e.g. the Lightning Finder and all the paints), which have no effect level thresholds to hit, and those happen to be a lot of the syntheses I've been posting in hindsight.

At least for the upcoming chapter, there's some bombs and elixirs and other stuff I'm going to make that I'll want on hand to help clear it, and I'll walk through the syntheses so that my strategy is easier to replicate. (Speaking of which, now that the full depth of L&S' alchemy system has been introduced with Enhancing Agents, I'm also due for an info dump explaining all of it next chapter.) Later on there's other break-the-game-in-half stuff that I'll make, and that I'll be sure to walk through, but if folks feel there's an issue with not showing my work enough then I'll try and correct for that in future chapters.

As long as you plan to show your work at some point I'm fine with the current setup; if you actually explained every synthesis you did the updates would just take even longer to load.

Chapter 5 debrief

You might have been wondering what happens if you try to actually take the Fire Dragon on. Well

Not surprising, when this is the Fire Dragon in action:

At this stage of the game, it’s got too much HP and Defense for anyone even scratch it, and it OHKOs Lydie and 2HKOs everyone else.

Anyway, ambitions!

Character Art/3D Models
Alt OA (Yuugen)
Alt 3D Model
Fuoco OA (Yuugen)

Location Notes and Memos:
Merveille:

This is Alt’s atelier. He’s super smart, so it’s like heaven with all the books there. Maybe I’ll sneak in there and take a look!

Outskirts:

This place was turned into a wasteland after it was burned by lightning bolts a long time ago. There’s lots of folklore in Merveille about lightning. I wonder if it’s related?
This totally isn’t subtle at all, game!

Mysterious Painting:

This painting world is filled with lava. Even though it’s a painting, the lava couldn’t be more real. So it’s really hot, enough to make you drip with sweat.

Music:
In the Sea of Fire -Lydie-
It’s a volcano! Let’s hear that bass rumble! That’s the general idea here (lol). Personally, I like the aggressive piano part you can hear in the chorus. (Yanagawa)

In the Sea of Fire -Suelle-
I tried to make this one sound a little less intellectual than Lydie’s version. The feeling you should get from this is that if there’s a problem, we’ll tackle it head on! (Yanagawa)

Twin Birds Flying through the Wilderness
There are many different settings for adventure stories, but this barren wilderness is probably the hardest for a Japanese person to imagine. These wastelands tend to be endlessly vast, and are not something familiar to us coming from a land that is both narrow and mountainous… (continues) (Achiwa)

Twin Birds Flying through the Wilderness -Night-
(Continued from previous) The other difference is that Japan is a humid and rainy land, and the idea of a wasteland in which nothing grows is certainly foreign. Any flat land that doesn’t need to be deforested will also already have been co-opted for use for agriculture or housing. After all, we have so many people and so little space. (Achiwa)

Scars (Lydie & Suelle Ver.)
…I told you that it’s dangerous to play the cool guy… But I suppose that’s the position this fellow was always going to occupy. I’m not sure how much I can give away here, but I will say that Sophie and Plachta must be pleased to see him looking so healthy. In a way, he is the key character at the end of Atelier Sophie. (Achiwa)
The spoilers above are pretty hugely spoilery for Alt’s own character arc in this game, and also for the endgame of one of the previous games in the Mysterious trilogy. If you don’t already know what I’m referring to, then mouse over the black-barred section at your own risk!

DEBRIEF debrief:
The game itself laid it on pretty thick with the E Rank exam and the last scene with Mireille and Mathias pondering over the readings from the Lightning Finder, but whatever the Kingdom of Adalet has been spending all these (in-game) months preparing for will be upon us shortly.

I found it a little odd since we were just introduced to this game's item duping system via Corneria (and now Star Fox is playing in my head. drat, it's so catchy!). I remember in some of the other Atelier LPs, this was where they'd explain how you could use this to make all kinds of OP items and gear by abusing this for fun and profit by making an item with a perfect trait roll, copying it, and using it in other syntheses to pass along its OP traits. That was usually how it worked at least.

That's never really necessary in any atelier because when you make multiple items in a single synthesis all of them inherit the same traits. That was my primary mechanism for passing them around since it's cheaper than duplication

Corneria's duplication services are most useful for when I'm like "man I can't get enough of these standout catalysts, or weapon/armor materials with top flight traits or effects"

speaking of which Chatper 5 still isn't really a point where I have really good traits on hand; the game makes you eat poo poo for the earlygame chapters regarding components, ingredient (and product) quality and traits available, though it hasn't really hurt me yet since I haven't needed anything really powerful immediately to get by. But since I'm hitting a point where I can finally have a lot of ingredients with much better components and traits, and will soon have access to a great catalyst that can carry my crafting for most of the rest of the game, I can explain a bit about trait transfers or combinations once I actually get to it.

Part 6-1: Alchemy For Whose Sake

Voices and Breaks

La-la-la! Mixing, mixing, mixing and we’re done! Mmm… Yes, that’s great! Now to move onto synthesis. Materials, materials…

Hello? Is someone talking?

 I want to become…!

Lydie, whatcha doing?

Ah, Sue. I thought I just heard a strange voice?

Really? Another voice from a painting? Or are you just tired? You’ve been on edge for a while now, Lydie. I think you’re pushing yourself too hard.

Do you think that’s all this is?

Yes, I do. The best thing is to take a break! We don’t have the next task yet, so let’s have some fun! I know! Let’s go visit Ilmeria at her atelier! She might feed us some nice treats!

Hehe, you’re just feeling hungry! But alright. Let’s go and pay her a visit.

The twins step outside, and…

Gah, this won’t stop me! Come on, Lydie! Run for it!

A short while later…

Ilmeria! We’ve come to visit you!

A Purpose Behind Power

Hold on! Firis? Are we in the wrong atelier?

Hold it! Why are you welcoming them? This is my atelier!

Hehe, sorry! Old habits are hard to break!

Honestly! Sorry, girls. Firis just happened to be here too. …Hold on, both of you are soaked! I’ll lend you some towels, hurry up and get dry!

I’ll make some tea, then. Some sweets, too!

One break later…

Ahh, I’m stuffed! These sweets are the best!

You said it! I could eat sweets and sugar for every meal.

You could eat pretty much anything! And you managed to eat two boxes already…

Hahaha, sorry! I guess I’m not helping either…

Hehe, no need to worry. I couldn’t eat all of these alone, anyway. Moving on… How’s your alchemy going? Getting close to having the greatest atelier in the kingdom?

Yes. It’s going well. We’ve reached E Rank!

Hehe. We’re not finished yet! You’ll see!

Can I ask you something? Both of you. Why do you pursue alchemy with such fervor?

Why? You just said it. To become the greatest alchemists in the kingdom.

Yes, I know. For the sake of your promise to your mom. I want to ask about after that, though. What will you do once you are the greatest?

Once we’re the greatest…

Actually… I’m sorry. I’ve never really thought about that!

Ah, no need to apologize! I was just wondering if you had something you wanted to do. Both Ilmeria and I struggled for a long time to work out what we wanted to use alchemy for.

You did? I can’t imagine that at all.

I’ve had my fair share of excitement, that’s all. Well, you don’t need to have an answer right away.

That’s right. As you become better alchemists, you’ll start to see what it is you want to do.

Enough of this shop talk, anyway. I’ve still got some sweets, so eat them while they last.

Yes! Thank you!

Hehe… don’t mind if we do, Ilmeria! And we’ll take some for the road, too! Let’s go, Lydie!

Right outside…

Becoming the greatest in the kingdom has been our only goal. Do you think the others have goals?

Hey, that’s a good question! Let’s go and ask around. It might give us some ideas, too. Hmm, who do you think? Alchemists… like, Lucia, Alt, and Dad, maybe?

I don’t think we’ll learn much from asking Dad, but I guess we can try him too.

Let’s start with Alt! His atelier is just across the bridge, if you think it won’t do much good to ask Dad.

Goals and Guidance

Oh, well done Alt! We’ve actually got a question we’d really like your help with.

We’d like to hear more about you, Alt. What is it that you want to use alchemy for?

I see. You’ve reached the point of wondering about how an alchemist should use their abilities.

I guess you’re complimenting our growth as alchemists, then… so, Alt…

Whaaaaaat?! Oh… Hahaha! You’re joking, right?

What do you think? What’s important here isn’t my plans, anyway, but your own. Having a purpose for alchemy is vital. It’s too powerful a force to be used without clear intent. If you plan to continue using alchemy, you should decide on something quickly.

Yes, you’re right. You’ve been a big help. Thank you!

Alright! Next up, and just up the street, is Lucia!

This is all a bit sudden! I guess… I’d need to think about that for a second. Hmm… My father’s an alchemist. He taught me since I was small, then put me in charge of our atelier. But hold on. Why? Why am I an alchemist, then? What do I want to achieve? What? Hmmmm?

Oh dear. I think we’ve broken her. She’s struggling with the question more than we are!

Hahaha. Sorry for setting you off, Lucia. We’ll see you again soon!

Well… we might as well ask Dad, then. Let’s go home.

The twins go home, but…

Dad! Hey, he’s not here. Where’d you think he’s gone?

Maybe to the graveyard? Let’s go and take a look around.

The twins go to the graveyard, where they find…

Dad. You’ll catch a cold out here!

Hey, girls. Sorry, I was lost in thought, thinking about a new painting.

In the rain? You’re so weird sometimes, Dad. There’s something we wanted to ask you, anyway.

Do you have a reason why you use alchemy?

A reason? Haha! As if! I just want to have fun synthesizing everyday and making new things! That’s all!

Hahaha. That’s exactly the answer I was expecting.

With that, Roger leaves.

Wait, what? Dad! Hmm. What do you think he meant by that?

I don’t know. He was so serious suddenly… I wonder… is he worried about something?

Anyway… We’ve asked all three of them. We didn’t learn much about their individual goals, either.

Maybe that shows how difficult it is to decide? Let’s go home and think about it a bit more.

Count me in. A-Achooo! Uwah, I’m freezing.

So Sue says, but as soon as they get back home…

Rank D Requirements

Ah, it’s the Messenger Puni! Heheh, thanks for coming out in this weather!

Puni!!

Finally, the exam requirements! Now we can aim for the next rank.

Say. Maybe we should delay deciding on our goal until after we get some more experience?

I agree. For now, we should focus on increasing our rank, which means raising our reputation! Ooh, and here’s our subsidy! Which is good, because I know you’re going to break the bank on recipe books!

Come on, Sue! You know I’m not that bad… aside from which, we’ll probably need new equipment soon to boot.

Ah, right. Our current loadout won’t cut it further down the line…

Subsidy of 3000 Coll received.

That evening, at Atelier Borthayre…

I’m coming in, Lucia! Wow, so this is Atelier Borthayre…

Hello, Mathias. You’ve actually come at just the right moment.

An “Innocuous” Concoction

Neither, actually!

Come now, no need to be like that. They’re so delicious, they’ll send you to heaven!

Like I’ll die? That’s what you mean, right? I know I just arrived, but I’m leaving!

So he says, but when he get to the door…

Hold on, it won’t open! What’s going on here?

Hehehe, this is my house. It stands to reason that I can lock the door from any distance!

N-No it doesn’t! S-Stay back!

You’re really going to kill me, aren’t you?! Gah, I’m cornered!

Very well. I’ve chosen the mulberry one for you. Here we go!

Ugwah! Uwaaaah! …Whuh? Hey, nothing happened! In fact, I feel better than before?

Of course you do. Even I wouldn’t force you to drink a harmful concoction. They look awful, but both are highly nutritious. You’ve been looking worn out recently, Mathias.

Thank you for your concern, but was there any need to force-feed it to me?

Ohohoho! For a bit of atmosphere! Just drinking it wouldn’t be any fun, would it?

Whatever, I guess you’re right. …She’s a bit of a handful, but I guess she doesn’t mean any harm.

Ah, one thing. Watch out for the aftereffects, though! The ingredients I used can sometimes make horns grow.

What?! I take that back! You do mean harm! You’re a witch, a witch!

Growing up with the twins has hardened her, clearly. I’d better not grow a horn!

The next morning, in the twins’ atelier…

Roger’s Enticing Examination

Sue, let’s go shopping, before we run out of ingredients.

Sure, sounds good. I fancy something healthy tonight!

Stop ignoring me, girls! My feelings are very delicate!

What for? You’ve just had another silly idea, haven’t you?

Lydie, you’ve been so spiky recently. You weren’t like this when you were small!

Which is all your fault, Dad. But whatever, we can humor you. What’s the idea this time?

A real blinder. An item for use in battle! You fight monsters sometimes, right?

Yeah, of course. We encounter monsters when we go to gather materials.

I’d like to reduce any risks for you. So I’ve thought of an item to neutralize monsters. You know about being captivated when you see something beautiful? Just how I felt with Honnete…

Reminiscing aside, I know what you mean…

I think monsters are probably the same. Increase your own appeal, enchant them…

Yes! It may make it safer! Dad, that’s not a bad idea!

Right! So here’s the list!

I’ve thought of this especially for you. Don’t waste my sincere feelings, please!

Right! Now, Imp’s Mischiefs…

We only have one! And I don’t think just one of them will cut it for Dad…

Let’s get to work synthesizing more, then.

That evening, at the Gates of Merk…

A Transformative Experience

Giving you a potion with unverified side effects? I’m so sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking.

L-Lucia! What’s wrong? You’re freaking me out!

Oh, how cruel! I’m sincerely trying to apologize here! Here, I’ve got something to apologize. This a real restorative, with no side effects at all!

You’re lying! That’s a lie! It’s another pointless potion of pain!

No! Have I so undermined your trust? I suppose it can’t be helped… This is payback for all the nasty things I’ve done. I’m so sorry, Mathias!

Lucia begins to leave, when…

H-Hold on! I went too far. You brought something specially for me, Lucia. Thank you.

Mathias! Does this mean?

Yes, I’ll drink it. Thank you so much!

Oh no, thank you!

Gulp… ugh… uwah… what?

Yes! My potion to turn people into Puni works! Now I’ve got Sue exactly where I want her! As for you… You’ll be back to normal tomorrow, I reckon. Goodbye, Mathias. Thanks for being my test subject! Sorry about all this!

Lucia walks off, for real this time.

Puni! Puni, Puni! (Ah, wait! drat you, Lucia!)

From this Puni experience, Mathias can now use the Puni Mask of Justice costume.

Yeah, you read that right! Remember this mask?

Well, now you get to choose whether you want Mathias to wear it for the rest of the game!

Part 6-2: Calm During the Storm

With the Triple Taun as a catalyst, we can make an additional Imp’s Mischief this synthesis. So long as we place a component on this spot…

And voila! Now for the rest…

Done…! Nngh… Cough, cough! Uwah, everything is spinning!

Cauldron or Stovetop

I’m fine, honest! I can still… cough, cough!

No you can’t! You need to spend today resting. I’ll nurse you back to health, so you stay in bed!

Ugh, okay. Sorry, Sue…

Right. Nothing cures a cold like rice porridge! So time to cook! First, the rice and eggs go into the pot. …Uwah, my hand slipped! Owww. That won’t stop me! Put in the ingredients, turn on the heat… gyaaah, the pot is on fire! Ugah, it’s burnt to a crisp! She can’t eat this. …Hold on, though!

Ingredients, cauldron… and then a bit of stirring… there we go! Lydie! Your rice porridge is ready!

Thanks! Mmm…

H-How was it? Did you like my rice porridge?

Yes, it was delicious. I actually feel a lot better. Your cooking has improved, Sue!

Ah, well, you know. It was for you, Lydie. A bit of cooking? No problem!

Sue, what a lovely thing to say! Heheh, I’ll at least help you tidy up!

No. You still need to rest. Leave everything to me and just get some more sleep. Okay?

Sure thing. Thank you, Sue.

Right then. For Lydie’s sake, too, I need to clean up the kitchen now! And I can handle making more Imp’s Mischiefs after…

That night…

Love Perfume

Roger Inspiration Condition: Give him 3 Imp’s Mischiefs.

That was incredible, girls! Hahaha! You’ve stirred up my creative soul!

So now we just have to wait for Dad to do his thing.

Whatever it will be.

Hmm… I wonder what he’s going to make?

All done!

What? Perfume? This is going to neutralize monsters?

Yes. If you’re not sure, just give it a try. Here!

Uwah! Stop it, don’t just spray that near me!

Although it does smell quite nice… Hm? Hold on, what’s going on? My heart is racing!

You too, Lydie? Mine is too!

Huh?

This is odd. I’m feeling a bit weird, Lydie, when I look at you…

Sue, me too! You’re so cute. So cute, little Sue!

Hmmm, it looks like it was too strong… Hah, another screw up. I’ll make it weaker.

I’ll just leave the recipe note over here…

The next morning…

Mmm… oh? I guess this is the idea Dad had. Hmm.. it’s a recipe for Pure Aroma.

That thing we can buy from Corneria’s? Though I guess now that we can make our own, we can adjust it to our liking.

Speaking of Corneria, I bet she’s got some goodies for us! Let’s go!

Corneria’s Booming Business

Or, well, wait in line…

Next! Understood. Here you go! That’ll be 500 Coll… Thank you very much! Phew…

Hello, Corneria. Business seems to be booming!

Hehehe! Is this because you’ve been bringing in those new products?

Yes. They’ve been a big part of it. But my volume retail service is proving even more popular. I’ve limited the amount allowed to be copied each day, but I’m still packed with customers!

You’ve had to place a limit? I guess you can’t be too convenient.

Not pretty? What do you mean?

Hehe, that’s still a secret. Keep on shopping here and eventually I’ll tell you.

Gah, trying to run away? One thing, though, Corneria. Just don’t push yourself too hard, alright?

That’s right. If you collapse from overwork then this will be all for nothing, after all!

Yes, I will be careful. This Ranking System, though, is a big business opportunity! I need to work hard, in order to make my enterprise even bigger!

Corneria?…

Oh, that’s not all! Lydie, Sue. I’ve decided to start a new service.

You have? What can possibly follow your volume retail service?

Eh…? A refill service…?

No. “Top Up Your Used Items! Completely Reassuring Refill Service!”

Ah, of course. What kind of service is it, then?

Let me explain.

Never worry about running out of items in the field again! I can completely refill uses for your bombs, medicine, or what have you! For a fee, of course. Which depends on the quality of whatever needs to be refilled. I can even send you an invoice to automatically top up your items at your home address! How does that sound?

A-Amazing! The volume sales were good, but this? Your shop is just too convenient!

Thank you. The “Top Up Your Used Items! Completely Reassuring Refill Service” will be here for you. Hehe. You can rely on Corneria!

You know what, Corneria? I think we’ll take you up on that auto-refill offer!

I understand. I’ll sign you up.

Hehe, great!

Oh right! Corneria, if we use up an ingredient for synthesis during battle, can you restore that, too?

Restoring an ingredient used during battle for synthesis…? That’s out of my wheelhouse… Sorry…

Oh… Well, it was worth asking. Thanks again!

Anyway, speaking of shops, should we visit Liane’s next?

The twins go to the Garden of Merk, where they meet with…

Scares and Shops

Hello, Firis. Perfect for what?

Hehe, I just bumped into someone really funny! I’ve got to tell you about it! This guy, right, he had a Puni in a basket! When I ask him why…

Firis…

Yeah?

Wyaaaaaaaaaah!

Hehe, surprised you! Another successful prank.

A-Are you alright, Firis? That was quite a scream.

I’m okay… I mean, I’m not, but I am. That just brought back some old memories…

Like what?

Hehe. Firis and I have been friends for a long time.

This isn’t the first time Pamela has surprised me. She almost gave me a heart attack before. Anyway! So you’ve come to Merveille too, Pamela? Are you going to be opening a shop again?

Yes, that’s right! I’m going to be a nun at the church as well.

A nun? You really are a nun, Pamela?

You really can’t tell? Well, no matter. I’ve got a great lineup, just like before. Come and shop anytime, Firis.

I will! I’m looking forward to it!

Great! See you again soon!

Haha! She hasn’t changed at all.

I’m glad you met your friend… hey, hold on! What about the Puni in the basket?

What? Oh, that. I’ve completely forgotten.

Aw, no way! Talk about being left in suspense!

Hehe, sorry… Anyway, catch you later!

Anyway, how did Pamela just pop up out of nowhere like tha… actually, I don’t think I want to think about that very hard.

Lydie! Sue! Come check this out! Dare I say it, you won’t find this anywhere else!

We’ll take it, Liane!

L-Lydie?! You can’t just go ahead and make decisions for both of us like that! Especially when it comes to spending that much money!

This book has recipes for gemstones, Sue! You can’t complain about that! Gotta spend money to make money, after all! Anyway, Liane!

Hehe, thank you.

Anyway, let’s go to the Great Cascades! I want to check up on Fuoco and do a little more gathering there.

Let’s!

The twins go there.

Ah, the villagers! Wait a sec…

It’s nice to be praised, but… uwah, this is all so confusing!

This goes on a whole level beyond twins! Did the painter have a one-track mind when painting this?

It really is kind of dizzying… anyway, let’s go gather some materials!

Back when the Fire Dragon was rampaging, a river of lava blocked us from going this way. Let’s see what’s on the other side!

Out of the way!

Oh, it’s one of these huge boulders…

Good thing we have a Mining Bomb, because it’d take forever to break it otherwise!

We had to use it up completely… but at least Corneria’s there to top it off for us!

Right? Now, treasure!

Ooh, a Ruby!

That made it worth coming out here! Anyway, now that the Fire Dragon is gone, should we explore its nest a bit more?

Let’s!

These large bone piles have all sorts of goodies! Dragon scales, huge bones… they’re really rare and can come in handy in ways we’ve yet to figure out!

Anyway, that’s enough. Let’s go back to Merveille!

Right! Oh, Sue, let’s drop by Ilmeria’s first.

The twins drop in Ilmeria’s atelier…

Ilmeria!

…Ilmeria?

Hmm, so if that’s the case, the next material…

Their Mentor Tireless

Waaaaaaah! D-Don’t sneak up on me like that! You surprised me!

You just didn’t react at all! What are you concentrating on so hard?

Just my studies. I got my hands on a somewhat rare textbook.

Wow, you’re studying? Being such a genius, I was sure you never have to study!

Of course I do! If I’m a genius at anything, it’s working hard!

Wow!

I know I said just studying isn’t enough, but that doesn’t mean you can skip studying altogether! In order to not lose to Firis, and to be able to remain your teacher… And, more than anything, to always be the very best, I have to work hard every single day!

I see. That stoic attitude is one of your greatest strengths, Ilmeria.

Ah, I’m glad you understand. Perhaps you could take a page out of my book too?

Take a page out of your book? What do you…

This, and this. How about this one, too?

That’s more than would fit in any box I could carry!

Ah, these books are your next homework. You need to read them all before tomorrow. Then I’m going to test you on them! Fail and I’ll keep you back for more studying!

What?! What are we going to do, Lydie?!

W-we can’t read them, that’s for sure! Promises with Mom or not!

I was thinking the same thing. In that case, there’s only one thing left to do! Run!

Hey, girls! Gah, spineless! Both of you!

We just have to make it back ho… oh?

A Cryptic Omen

Hmm.

What are you doing, Alt? Just staring at the wall?

Ah, hello girls. I’m not fascinated by this wall, if that’s what you mean. I was thinking.

Thinking? How to spend your allowance? Or what to cook for dinner?

We think about very different things, clearly. I was thinking about these terrible storms. If my investigations are correct, these storms… well, we’ll see soon enough.

Investigations? “We’ll see soon enough”?

What are you getting at, Alt?

There he goes… Hey, Sue. Can I confirm something with you? Alt is a really weird guy, isn’t he?

You just worked that out? Don’t let him get in your head, or he’s won.

Right… Anyway, speaking of storms, let’s duck out of this one. And a roof over our heads. And a recipe book to read.

Just tell me everything important, okay?

Oh, Sue… some things never change…

Learned Smaragd recipe.
Learned Sapphire recipe.
Learned Ruby recipe.
Learned Diamonds recipe.

Oof! Guess we’ll have to be a bit more mindful when it comes to using items in the field from now on…

Even so, the Mining Bomb is back, and good as new!

I don't... entirely understand auto-refill. It'll top up anything you made with multiple uses? Or are there a limited number of items you can equip like that?

Basically, Cordelia will automatically give you back any items you used while you go out. So she'll refill items with multiple uses, but even re-create items you completely use up. It functionally means that item uses are per-adventure rather than universal. She charges money for refills though.

Yeah before this point, if I used up all of an item's uses in the field, then that was it; it was gone forever. Now, though, if I use like 6 of 6 of a Mining Bomb's uses or 3 of 7 of an Ice Bomb's uses, then it'll still be there (though the used up Mining Bomb will still be chilling in the basket with 0 uses) for Corneria to top up*.

Auto-refill just means that she'll refill it as soon as you're back in the atelier, so long as you have enough money; otherwise, she just...won't do it until you scrounge up enough cash.

*The exception here is like, if you use a Distilled Water or a Raw Ruby or whatever other ingredient in a Battle Mix synthesis; Corneria can't bring those back.

Part 6-3: Brewing a Storm

Alright, Lydie! You’ve spent a small fortune on books for gemstones… so why don’t we actually start making some?

Alright. But first, we need raw gems. Let’s start with a Raw Ruby. We’ll need two Magnet Stones, some Alchemic Clay, some fuel, and some water.

Finally! Hmm… which catalyst should we use?

Hmm… anything goes. Anyway, materials! Magnet Stones… and then Alchemic Clay.

We won’t make much Coll if you tack on that trait, though!

True, but this actually works better for us if we want to register it with Corneria. Now, Fuel!

Doubling down on the cheap stuff, huh?

Sure am. Now, let’s put in some water, and synthesize!

Hmm… perfect!

Hey, Lydie. Did the Low Price traits just combine?

I wasn’t sure if that would happen, but I’m glad it did! Now for the actual Ruby itself…

We’ll also need Polish, Distilled Water and some neutralizer.

Ah, Lydie… I think I can see why you want cheap Rubies for Corneria to duplicate.

Right! This is an exceptionally powerful catalyst. It can let us produce an extra of whatever we synthesize, bestow an extra use on something we can use in the field, transfer an extra two traits, and finally, lift the effect level cap quite a bit!

That’s incredible! We couldn’t possibly have enough of these! So let’s get started! In with the Raw Ruby…

Like with the Raw Ruby, it doesn’t matter for this synthesis if we hit any effect level thresholds…

We just need to activate the spots that yield an extra Ruby and let us transfer two more traits!

Ah, hahaha… looks like some of the Low Price traits ended up turning into another Common Item trait. But this is good enough for our needs!

We could use some more weapon materials, too. Let’s make an Ingot.

As useful as Rubies are, an Ertona Crystal will be better for the effect levels we want for this synthesis.

This wasn’t perfect… but the Mercury-boosting spots let us hit a threshold for more attack power on whatever weapon this’ll be used for.

There we go! I want to synthesize more, but we’d best wait until we can get some more Rubies from Corneria first.

Meanwhile, at the Corneria Enterprise…

I can’t find the shop they were talking about. Gah, where is it? Hmm… oh?? That woman…!

Her Acquaintance’s Daughter

S-Sorry? What made you shout like that?

Can I ask you one thing? Have you ever been a doll?

What?

Ah, sorry if that was weird! I just saw a doll that looked exactly like you, once…

Hehe, that’s a surprise for me too. A doll made to look like me? By who? Although I have a pretty good idea. Fritz… I’m going to have to invoice you for this!

Ugh? I don’t think it was Dad. And how do you know my dad, anyway?

Dad? You’re Fritz’s daughter?

Yep, that’s right! I’m Drossel! Nice to meet you!

Ah, I’m Corneria. I see, Fritz’s daughter… What are you doing here, anyway, Drossel? You’ve been wandering up and down for a while.

Ah, of course. I’m looking for a shop called the Corneria Enterprise.

Yes. The Corneria Enterprise is my store.

Yes! I heard you sell lots of wonderful things, so I had to come and check it out!

I see. Then please, feel free to take a look around. I’ll give you a discount, too, since you’re Fritz’s daughter.

Woohoo! Now, then…

After Drossel leaves…

Corneria! Can we register this Ruby with you?

You certainly can, but… you already have three items registered with me. What would you like to swap out?

Hmm… we have plenty of Red Neutralizer for now. Let’s swap that out.

Understood. I’ll make the arrangements.

(Alchemy sure is something… you can make gemstones cheaper than cloth, if you have the will and the skill.)

Lydie! Sue! I have a copy of your Ruby ready!

Then we’ll take it. Here’s your 42 Coll!

Thank you very much!

Anyway, Sue! We’ve got more synthesis to do!

Right! This is our first time trying to make Silvalia. It’s a more potent metal that can be used for forging.

Let’s place our blue components where the blue spots in the cauldron are. And as a bonus, the Ruby having a spot boosting Sun effects means that we already hit a threshold for Strength… before even putting in any green components!

Right! And in turn, the Ruby having a spot boosting Mars effects pushed us over another threshold for Attack and Speed… and the effect level cap increase let us max out the Strength effect! Now, then, let’s finish the job!

And be sure to register it with Corneria later, of course!

Ooh, Lydie! Have you ever wanted to make an even more powerful Bomb?

That’d be great to have! What’s your plan, Sue?

Let’s use the Darkshroom as a catalyst, since it’ll raise the effect level cap just enough to let us pull this off. We just need to be sure to activate the level spots, and…

Success!

I’ve got an idea about how we can take this even further! Lydie! Use a Ruby as a catalyst, and use this combination of ingredients…

I see. Using that old Uni Bag in tandem with the blue spots the Ruby created, we can hit a second threshold with the blue effect. And we have just enough red components that with the Mars space…

Yeah! This will be super potent in battle… Shame about the lack of useful traits, but this was a tradeoff we had to make. If nothing else, it’ll cost us less to have Corneria top it off.

Speaking of traits… next up, Distilled Water! We can use this for a Battle Mix, and I was wondering something about traits on ingredients we use for Battle Mix.

The potency of a Battle Mix depends on the quality of our ingredient… but if we make ingredients that have traits bestowing more uses on them, then couldn’t we boost the quality commensurately?

Commens… I dunno what that means, but it’s worth a shot!

There we go! Now that I think about it… we can keep using Distilled Water with quality-enhancing traits to make even higher-quality Distilled Water… so we could keep this going ad infinitum! But for now, last on my bucket list… a Special Nutrient!

With a Ruby as our catalyst… all we need to worry about here is putting in as much green components as we can. And activating the spots giving an extra copy and an extra use for those copies, of course!

Special Nutrient

That’s a pretty interesting item. A nutrient you can use with not just plants, but anything.

Hahaha, I know! We can use this to get higher-quality ingredients when we go gathering. By the by… Do you think it would make a person grow taller?

That could be fun, sure. But Lydie, do you think it might work on hair? If so, there’s someone I’d really like to help out.

I know exactly who you mean, Sue, but I think we’d better leave it alone… Sometimes, you know, not saying anything can be the kinder option.

I see. We can’t make flowers bloom on a barren wasteland, I guess…

I dunno if I’d put it that way, but… you get it.

Right… Anyway, we’ve been synthesizing for days on end! I think we’ve earned some R&R…

The next morning…

Promises to Mom

(Heheh! I’ll help you with anything! I love you, Mom!)

(That makes me so happy! I love you too, Lydie.)

(Uwaah, Mom! I fell over!)

(Oh dear. That’s alright, I’ll kiss it away. You’re strong, Suelle. Is that better?)

(I’m not strong! Hurting things hurt! Waaaah!)

(Oh my. You’re such a cute little crybaby, Suelle. Hey, Lydie. You have to protect Suelle. You understand? You’re her big sister. You have to be the one to look after Suelle, Lydie.)

(I will! I promise you, Mom!)

Mom… you’re watching, right? I’ll do my best…

Lydie’s looking at that photo again…

I noticed too. She doesn’t show it often, but I know she’s very sad on the inside.

She should just tell me how she’s feeling. We’re twins, after all.

That’s exactly why she can’t. She’s clumsy and stubborn. You have to watch out for her, Sue. Watch out for Lydie.

Hahaha, I know! After all… I made the same promise to Mom.

Come to think of it I probably could have made it even cheaper if I hadn't had both Low Price and Low Price++ on the Polish; having Low Price+ on the Red Neutralizer meant that Low Price+ and Low Price++ could have combined into Mass Produced, an even more powerful price-reduction trait, and having that plus Common Item would have made the Rubies even cheaper. But I guess the trait merging coding prioritizes merging up a vanilla Low Price trait with Low Price+ trait first.

But cheap Rubies are especially appreciated, since holy poo poo I literally broke the bank with the incoming weapon/armor crafting update.

Rubies are by far the best craftable catalyst that's meaningfully mass producable. It gets competition from some gatherable ones and some late-game hard-to-craft ones but rubies are a very solid staple forever

I think the trait-merging logic merges low level traits first. The easiest way to get the most powerful cost reduction trait would be to put common item and mass produced on separate ingredients. I believe you can get Mass Produced, Common Item, and Bargain (the merger of the two) onto the same item if the ingredients have Mass Produced, Low Price, and Low Price+--Low Price and Low Price+ will merge but the resulting Common Item won't merge with Mass Produced until you do another synthesis. This worked in the previous trilogies at least but I guess it might not work here. It's all pretty overkill but in the recent Ateliers with no time limit I find it fun to push the limits and get the theoretical best even if it takes a dozen intermediate syntheses.

Part 6-4: Medicine and Metallurgy

Hey, Sue… you think Fritz might have another puppet show ready?

Only one way to find out!

The Dollmaker’s Stomachache

Mr. Fritz, are you alright? You’re sweating!

No, it’s fine. I’ve just got a bit of a stomachache…

That’s a problem! We can make some medicine for that, if you’d like?

Make some medicine? What do you mean?

Ah, we didn’t mention this? We’re alchemists!

What, really? Strange fate, indeed! Eeeeesh!

Ah, you just relax and take it easy! We’ll have some medicine ready before you know it!

Uwah, thanks… I’ll be counting… on you…

The twins go back to the atelier.

Hey, Lydie… we’ve never actually made stomachache medicine before, huh?

Hmm… we’re getting better at alchemy, so we should be able to make one up on the fly! We just need these ingredients…

That’s an interesting recipe. Wait… Puniballs and… beehives? I’ll let you handle this one, Lydie! I can’t touch the beehives!

Sigh… guess this falls to me, then.

Hmm… yes! This should do the trick!

Let’s go! It’d be rude to keep a sick man waiting!

Secret Ingredients

Thanks… I’ll drink it right away… Glug, glug… uwah! Uwah! How bitter! What did you put in that!

Just a touch of something good for you. The actual ingredients are a secret.

Don’t worry, it will prove itself soon enough.

Uwah! The pain is rapidly fading away!

There you go! That’s the power of alchemy!

Indeed, alchemy has done a lot for me over the years. It really is amazing, isn’t it? Thank you, both of you! I feel a lot better!

Good, I’m glad. That’s just an emergency measure, though. You need to resolve the cause or it will probably come back.

The cause? Anxiety, no doubt. Anxiety because of Drossel…

What? What is wrong with Drossel?

You know how she gets lost, right? Well, it’s even worse than you might think… It once took more than four years to find her. I swore to never be separated from her again… But when she vanishes, she vanishes! It’s like magic or something! An eldritch power! So I try to keep an eye on her every single day, but it’s giving me an ulcer…

I see. That’s going to be tough to fix…

Yeah. She started to be a little more careful herself, recently, but still… She’s my darling daughter, whatever she does to my stomach, I can’t abandon her now!

Very well. If your stomach starts to hurt again, just let us know.

P-Puni extract?

Ah, shoot! A-alright, we’ll see you later!

Hey! Puni extract?! Is that what’s in this?! Is it really safe to drink?! Hey!

Hey, Lydie… right around the corner. Hagel’s.

We’ve got some business with him, anyway. Hagel!

Uncanny Nostalgia

Huh? A customer? It’s open!

Hey, Pamela. It’s rare to see you here.

I guess it is! Sorry, but the doorknob to my room broke… I don’t have to get it fixed, of course, but it is a bit of a bother. Grace told me you’re good at your job, so I came to see if you could help me!

I see, I see. That sounds like something I can handle… hold on!

We’ve met before somewhere, right?

I was thinking the same thing! I just can’t remember where it was?

Me neither. The south? The west? Or could it be…

Hmm, this is so annoying! Like an itch I can’t scratch!

It can’t be helped if we both don’t remember. Pamela, was it? How about sharing a meal sometime? I think we’d get along pretty well!

Oh my, that sounds lovely! I’ll definitely take you up on that offer!

That settles it! Ah, now about this troublesome doorknob…

W-Wow, the two of them are getting along like a house on fire!

Hahaha! Like two weird little peas in a pod!

I’ll be back for it soon, Hagel!

Come back again soon, Pamela!

Tools of the Trade

We’ve got plenty of orders for you, Hagel! First off… I need a new staff!

Ah, you’re sharp! Ingots and Silvalias count as Weapon Material… so you can use a Silvalia for your Weapon Material to add more oomph to your staff!

Perfect! I’ve done it, a staff for Lydie! Here you go!

Uwah! Thanks so muwaaaaaach!

What happened there? You made a sound like a squashed frog.

It’s… too… heavy… This staff is too heavy!

Heavy? It’s made of metal, but it shouldn’t be too bad?

Give it here a moment. Hmm? It seems a bit light… For me anyway…

N-No it isn’t! Uwah! I can barely lift it!

Hmm. I made it so even a Puni could carry it…

What?

If it’s too heavy, very well, I’ll change it. I’ll try and get it down to ant weight…

Hahaha. Maybe you do need to work out a little more.

Next up… I need stronger firepower! Boom boom! Let’s use two more of the Silvalia we got from that quest the other day…

Alright! Now, this is Sue, so I’ll be sure to make two of these bad boys!

Oh! Hagel, I’m impressed! Hehe, these guns fit my hands perfectly!

Hey, Sue. I’ve been wondering about this for a while. Why do you use two guns? I don’t mind making a pair, of course. But isn’t it easier to aim with one gun?

Ah, the reason is simple. Two guns is much cooler!

Excuse me?

Ah, it was so great! I was pretty obsessed with it for a while.

I twisted the arm of my gun instructor until they taught me how to use two at once! Hah, fun times!

I see. That sounds just like something you’d do, Sue! I understand how you feel, too. So let’s modify your guns some more, shall we? Make you into a real comic book heroine?

Ah, are you sure? Very well! So, by concentrating I can extend the barrels by three meters!

Magic blades should extend from the grips, too! And when things get dicey, they fire a beam…

What’s this feeling? The feeling of defeat? What should I do? What can I do? Aaaaaah!

Haha… I guess there’s a reason that stuff’s only in comics?

Let’s lift his spirits by having him make something I know he can make! Next up…

The specs are pretty strict for this bow, huh…

Specs or not, they’re going to be way more powerful than the Hawkeye Bow!

A bow… you’re going to use this?

No, it’s not for us. It’s for an alchemist named Firis.

Huh! An alchemist? It’s rare for one to use a bow. (How does an alchemist use a bow, anyway… oh!) She uses arrows dipped in alchemy potions, does she? Shouting “Poison Arrow” and stuff like that?

I don’t know about that. We’d have to ask her.

I’ve seen her shoot fire, though, and rocks.
She can’t shoot rocks just yet, game!!

Rocks? That’s not a bow! That’s a catapult!

Ah, sorry, I’m not explaining very well. Now that I think about it, though, just how does she do that?

Sticks a bomb to the tip of an arrow, maybe? That seems a bit simplistic, though.

In any case, it sounds like she’s using it in ways I can’t possibly imagine…

Next up, a sword for Mathias! I mean, just look around the place! This is right up Hagel’s alley!

Weapon materials… and animal materials…?

Hahaha, check this out, girls! It’s a sword! A real sword! Like, the greatest sword ever!

You look pretty happy, Hagel.

You bet I am. I’m originally a weapon maker, after all. And swords are the greatest of all weapons. Not to mention such an article as this! I love it!

I-Is that so? I don’t really get it.

Oh, it is! So lovely! Beautiful enough to rub my face against it!

Uwah, don’t do that! You’ll cut yourself!

Bah, fine, I won’t. But now do you see how much I love swords?

Y-Yes… we can see that very well…

Uwah, scary! Very well. We’ll tell him, just like that.

Hahaha, good luck, Mathias! You’d better not drop this masterpiece by mistake!

Next up… Hagel, we need a book!

Er… a book? You want me to MAKE a book?

Let’s use more of the Silvalia we crafted the other day. We’ve enough to cover Firis’ new bow and now Alt’s new book…

Ah, the book for Alt! Thank you, Hagel.

I don’t really want to bring this up, but girls, do you know what this shop is?

What do you mean? You’re a handyman, right?

Or what, a general store?

A blacksmith! I’m a blacksmith! I don’t normally make books, you hear?

Wow, you wrote this? Hagel, I’m impressed. It’s so well made!

Once I’ve taken the job, I see it through. That’s what it means to be a craftsman!

You take real pride in your work, don’t you? Haha, tell me, Hagel… Could you use that pride to make a cheesecake? I bet you could make a really delicious one!

Hah, I’m not falling for that! I bet I could make one, but I’m not going to!

Gah, Hagel! I thought I had you!

Hahaha, but you think you could do it! You really are a handyman, Hagel!

Anyway, if Hagel thought making a book was weird, wait until he sees what Lucia wants…

Yeesh, this umbrella will really set us back! I guess it’s nothing for a rich girl like Lucia, but this’ll eat up almost all our remaining Coll!

I know you need cloth to make an umbrella, but I guess it’s pretty innovative of Lucia to incorporate armor materials into one.

I made it just like you asked, but are you sure about this? That’s an umbrella, right?

Ah, it’s fine. This is what Lucia asked for.

Still, I have to ask… It’s been strengthened, but won’t it still bend when it hits something?

That’s okay. Lucia will be the one using it, after all!

You think? The recipe also said “can block when opened”, but that’s just totally impossible!

This is fine, honestly! It’s all coming from Lucia!

If you say so… very well. It just seems a bit odd to me.

Hahaha. Us too, but what can you do?

Not much. Lucia will have to decide if this is good or not.

At least make the frame a bit tougher! But I can’t ignore my client’s wishes. Hmm, still…

Right! We made a weapon core the other day—a Blason of Ferocity. Why don’t we attach it to someone’s weapon?

Sure! I think… Firis’ bow would get a big boost!

The UI for attaching Weapon Cores doesn’t show off any modifications to the weapon’s parameters from customization, so the Surf Bow didn’t suddenly get nerfed out of nowhere.

We’re flat broke now, but we can swap out our old weapons and sell them for some cash for armor.

But that won’t be enough, so let’s check the Notice Board. Hopefully we can turn something in for some quick cash…

Perfect! Now, back to Hagel’s!

Some of the finest armor we can make… and we cobbled up just enough cash to buy it!

Shame that only a few among us can actually wear it. Oh well!

Luckily for us, weapon materials count as metal all the same!

Interesting. Looking at the parameter traits… For crafting armor, traits from different materials can merge… just like when we’re synthesizing!

It sure is handy! But it’ll cost you extra for me to put in the effort incorporating those traits!

Bah! But when we’re putting ourselves at risk out there, it’s worth every last bit of cash…

We’ve enough for just… one… more!

Part 6-5: Revels in the Rain

Sue! Wanna hit up Firis’ place?

Let’s!

The Master Alchemist’s Insatiable Wanderlust

Somewhere fun? What exactly do you want to do?

Heheh, travel, just travel! My hobby is to visit all kinds of different places.

Travel? In which case, there’s a few good places.

The twins fill her in, but I can’t explicate because the Mysterious series has little worldbuilding; I couldn’t tell you anything about anywhere in Adalet aside from Merveille and the outskirts areas where you gather and which Firis tags along for anyway. After all that…

Hmmm, interesting! You are stirring up my curiosity now! Uwah, I want to leave at once! I can’t wait. But I’ve got jobs to finish first.

Hahaha! Firis, you really do love traveling!

Of course! Seeing the whole wide world has always been my dream! After all… My home is a pretty unique place. I couldn’t even leave it until I was around the age you are now.

Not once?

Yep. I wanted to, but I couldn’t. When I finally did, it was so much better than I imagined! The wide sky, the soothing wind… The relaxing smell of grass, and land as far as I could see! I just loved being outside, you know? And that love has never left me.

I see. So come on, Firis! Will you tell us more about your travels?

Yeah, good idea! We’ve never traveled ourselves, but we’ve always wanted to.

Leave it to me, then! I’ll talk until you’re sick of hearing my voice.

You think so? Well, try us!

Much, much later…

She wasn’t kidding! I lost count of how many hours she spent going on…

Mmm. Anyway, we’re also getting closer to Alt, gradually… I want to check his atelier out!

The Mysterious Boy’s Caustic Concoctions

Um… hello? Alt?

Huh? Ah, you want me?

Is there anyone else here? We just want to take a look around…

I don’t mind. I’m busy with research, though, so I’m not giving you a tour.

That’s fine. We’ll just take a look for ourselves. What kind of things might we find?

If Alt’s too busy, then we’ve only one way to find out! …Uwah! It’d probably be a total nightmare if I knocked over these flasks…

That’s a pretty thick stack of notes! And I could spend forever reading all these books…

Hmm… I think that’s about it. Well, that was even more bizarre than I was expecting. So much weird stuff!

Yeah, but they look like powerful items, too. You really are incredible, Alt!

I’m honored that you think so. None of these are especially impressive pieces, though.

They’re not? What about this potion, then? What does it do?

Ah… That turns people into horses.

Wah! What about this bomb, then?

Haha, that’s just a normal bomb. A moderate blast to level everything in the immediate vicinity.

That sounds a little more powerful than “normal!” Is all of this stuff as dangerous as that?

I don’t think that’s a laughing matter… I’m suddenly feeling very unsafe in here…

Alt is totally terrifying… Let’s make sure never to get on his bad side. Psst… let’s step out for now, Lydie.

Right… oh? What’s going on here?

An Unexpected Gesture

:corsair: Oh, is that so? Then I really want it!

:pseudo: Would I lie to you? At the special price, then, of just 5000 Coll!

Hey… That shouldn’t cost 5000 Coll. That’s one of the first things an alchemist learns how to make!

Yeah. We need to step in…

:pseudo: What? I’m not pretending to do anything! Who are you, anyway?

Who I am doesn’t matter. Stop selling your fake potions. Grass from the side of the road and some pond water? Even alchemy can’t make anything from that! And you’re trying to sell it for 5000 Coll? If you don’t like “pretend”, how about “fraud”?

:pseudo: Ugah! The jig is up! I’ll remember this!

:swoon: That was great! So cool!

Huh.

:corsair: W-What’s going on here? I was being tricked?

Rub this on your joints. They should get a lot better.

:corsair: Ah, thank you. I don’t know what more I can say!

Don’t mind me. I just hated seeing that impostor act like a real alchemist. Well then… take care. It’s back to work for me.

Uwah! Alt is so cool. Fighting for justice!

Yeah! Haha, all that talk about taking over the world was just a joke after all. Hm… was that Lucia I just saw headed to Alt’s atelier?

…Another guest? What now?

Their Childhood Friend’s Ultimatum

You just suddenly turn up at my atelier and say that? Are you picking a fight?

No, not at all. I’m just stating a fact. From your toes to the top of your head… You couldn’t be more suspicious-looking!

Hahaha, I’ve been called suspicious before, but never quite so completely! What’s your plan, then? Are you going to call the guards on me?

Excuse me?

Collude. As in, collusion. The darkness I see in your heart makes you my ideal business partner. You’ve got alchemy skills, too. How about it? Join me in aiming for the top?

Pfft… heh… Hahahaha! No thanks. You’re too green to be my partner.

What!

Not to mention you’ve got “lie” written all over your face. You need to start by fooling yourself! You’re trying to keep an eye on me, then, to protect your precious twins? How naive of you, naive indeed… Did you think I’d fall for that?

Gah! I’ll leave you be, for today!

Off she goes… She’s smart, sure, but also a bit of a soft touch. Which I guess is okay, for an alchemist. I’ll look forward to her future as well, then. What a promising group of young alchemists this is…

Meanwhile, at the Notice Board…

You’re dragging me all the way to the Notice Board… is there something you really need to talk to Drossel about?

Ah, Lydie! Sue! What’s up?

Drossel, could you recommend a good book? Firis told me that you’re a real book lover.

Sure thing! A recent recommendation would be “Den of Dolls”.

Author’s Recommendations

Huh? Oh, then… How can I resist that smile? First then, “False Dreams”. A girl travels her dreams with some surprising twists.

“False Dreams”. Surprising twists. Good, good.

Also, “Mist Talker”. It’s a tale of horror, so don’t read it at night.

“Mist Talker”. Watch out for reading at night. Good, good.

Ah! I can’t forget “Sky Dancer”, either! Romance, this one will make you cry!

“Sky Dancer”. Have a handkerchief ready. Good, good!

Hehe, it makes me happy to see you noting down all my recommendations!

It does? That’s just me, I have to note things down or I can’t be sure.

You’ve got a serious streak, Lydie. It’s far better than forgetting everything, anyway! Those are my best three at the moment, anyway. I’m sure you’ll enjoy all of them. None of them are that expensive, so please give them a try!

Okay!

Gah, I fell asleep standing up again! Lydie, are you done yet?

And Sue has no interest in books at all. Looks like she has her own talents, though!

Teach, Drossel, Liane… Firis sure is connected to all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds, isn’t she?

She is! But I guess it comes with the territory of being an accomplished alchemist and adventurer. Should we go back to pay her another visit?

Meanwhile, at Firis’ atelier…

What are you talking about? That was just you, hahaha!

Hah, not at all! Your teeth were chattering out of your head!

Fast Friends and Insecurities

Hahah, mere friendship can’t define our bond. We are both best friends and eternal rivals!

Enough with the corny lines. Although I’m not denying it.

Oh? You’re not?

If I resist she gets all annoying. I’ve known her a long time, so I understand her well.

Heh. So you are good friends, in the end.

Fated ones, perhaps. Hey, that reminds me! I do have one bone to pick with you!

Ah! I think I know what you’re going to say…

I bet you do! Why are you so big?!

Il, please! I… Excuse me?

For reference, Firis has a full 12cm on Ilmeria, who again, is shorter than the twins

Oh dear… Well, it’s hard to not notice the difference…

Ahahaha, not at all. You’ve grown up plenty, Il!

I don’t need your pity. I’m leaving! Bye-bye!

She just stormed off… Are you alright with this, Firis?

Yeah, why not. This is pretty much how things always go down. I do wonder though, Il. Have you really forgiven me?

Ah… we’ll see you later, Firis!

What was with Firis, anyway? She sounded really unusually downbeat at the end, there. Really guilty…

Mmm… anyway, should we head to the castle? We can go to the gallery from there for some more gathering in the Mysterious Paintings.

En route to the castle…

A Polished Writer

Yes, that’s right! The genius alchemist sisters, the hot topic in town!

Hey, no need to get all embarrassing! We’re regular, just regular alchemists!

Hahaha, no need to be so modest. My dad said you’re pretty good! In which case, I’ve got a real important request! A life-changing question!

Life-changing? Gulp! W-What do you mean?

Don’t tell me, you want a magic potion that turns people into puppets!

I don’t need anything that dangerous! What I need is a tool to hone a blade. A whetstone, polishing agent, something like that…

Why? Why would a puppeteer need to maintain a blade?

An axe, actually. I want to get a bit of a workout.

An axe! You use an axe, Drossel?

Of course! I’m pretty strong! I’ve fought dragons, ghosts, grass monsters, all sorts of creatures, with my friends. Hundreds of battles!

W-Wow… That’s actually quite unexpected.

No problem, though. We’ll make just the item you need!

We might even have plenty of it al-

That’s enough! At least just limit it to “skilled alchemists”!

Hahaha! It sounds promising. I’ll be counting on you!

Means of Inspiration

As I was saying, we have plenty of Polish! This should do the trick for Drossel!

Here we go! The genius beautiful ultimate twin alchemists… uwah, I bit my tongue!

Hahah, you deserved that. Anyway, Drossel! This is what you requested, here.

Ah, thank you girls! Ah, this is going to give me some great ideas!

Huh? What do you mean? I thought you wanted to fix an axe?

Yeah, that’s right. First I’ll use this to repair the axe… Then I’ll get a workout fighting some monsters. Getting a bit crazy in battle… Will be a great change of pace, and give me some great ideas! Well? Aren’t I a genius?

Genius is a stretch. Muscle brain might be better?

Hahaha, give me a break, Sue! A change of pace can be important, anyway. This is all to create the ultimate puppet show.

Ah, you talked about that before. Just what kind of show is it going to be?

Hmm, well, I don’t have any concrete ideas yet… Something that appeals to the audience’s emotions. A wonderful show, in which the puppets seem to be alive! My father and I have always dreamed of putting on the ultimate puppet show! We’ll move the hearts of one and all!

I’d love to see that myself, to be honest!

Me too, me too! Say, Drossel! Once that ultimate puppet show is ready, will you invite us?

Yes, of course! I promise! Hehe, I should work harder! For these two, and for all others who are waiting to see it!

Right! Now, to the castle at last! …Ooh, what have we got over here?

King of the Wastrels

Hello, King of the Wastrels!

Hey, hold it! What kind of title is that?

It seems logical enough to me! You’re the unemployed heir to the crown, right?

That’s not what it sounds like! It sounds like I’m the king of idlers or vagabonds!

Really? Sorry about that! What are you doing, anyway?

Reading. I’m reading. Elegantly reading!

Reading! I’m not sure I want to know what kind of book! I bet it’s pretty perver-

Enough jokes! This is what I’m reading!

Alright, fine, I’ll have a look… Geopolitics! And it’s incredibly thick. You really were studying, Mathias!

Yes. Very seriously! What do you think of that?

Amazing, Mathias! Pigs will be flying tomorrow if you keep this up!

What?

Wow, you said it. Better get those umbrellas ready or it could get messy!

Ugh, nasty! Will we ever eat bacon again?

Mathias has acquired the skill “A Heavy Burden”.

A Heavy Burden - Increases Maximum HP.

Anyway… to the gallery!
