Incidentally, the Norman Centuries podcast is pretty good if you're interested in them -- it covers pretty much all of the Norman adventures and conquests from Rollo to the fall of Antioch. It's made by the same guy who did 12 Byzantine Rulers.

I very much appreciate this link. I'm descended from Normans, so I've been trying to find more good info about them (at least more than the occasional Wikipedia article). They're also my fav culture to play, and I have a tendency of ruler designer-ing them into silly places.

By my interpretation, you're the only one getting pissy. Their post was just agreeing with you and providing extra context.

Regarding merchant republics: another advantage to killing the other patricians is that if you're the doge (or in your case the lord mayor) and you kill the last possible inheritor in a family, you get all their money. Their trade posts also go to the other patrician families (including yours), but I've never been quite sure how they divide them up. Hopefully somebody else can explain that better.

they are assigned to the surviving families with the family with the least number of trade posts getting preference. so basically the meta is to let a family get up to 4 trade posts and then murder them all to make sure you get a trade post out of the deal.

Excellent, thank you. I thought it was something like that, but I couldn't remember the specifics. Do you know if it'll still give you a post if you're at or above your post limit? I mean, I would assume not, but a man can dream.

edit:

With my past two rulers, the pope has asked me to fight wars to restore papal land as well. That one's kind of a pain, but I'm doing well enough with this play-through that it's honestly kinda fun to have something to do.

"Eastern" and "Oriental" have essentially the same denotation, but to a large number of native English speakers "Oriental" bears a racist connotation. It would just be better to avoid that altogether.

It's important to note that to merge any units they need to all be simultaneously selected. To do that, click and drag to form a box that encompasses all of them. Maybe that's really obvious, but I probably put ~100 hours into the game before I learned that. Before CK2, the Civilization series had been the only 4X strategy games I'd played so selecting multiple things in that manner was not apparent to me. I guess I didn't think at the time that it would play by RTS rules in that regard.

I'm assuming they're talking about the ones that pause the game, pop up in the middle of the screen, and then require an input to resolve.

Gotta love it when I'm eldership succession and some no-name septuagenarian changes his vote every few days so the game keeps pausing to tell me about my new heir.

Does anyone know if they're keeping artifacts/equipment in for CK3? I imagine it's kind of an unpopular feature, but I really liked the idea of passing down the family gear over the course of the game and I'm hoping that they expand on that mechanic. It would be cool to have some more variety and maybe some deeper features/events associated with different kinds of items.

With the expanded character models they've shown I'm already looking forward to the possibility of getting to play dress-up a little more.

They haven’t said anything yet about that afaik, but I agree. Why do you think they’re unpopular? Everyone seems to enjoy artifacts

I think I've always assumed that they're unpopular because they have a tendency to help the player snowball too much. Now that I think about it though, there seem to be lots of other features that contribute to that. Glad to hear that so many other people like them too.

A whole expansion focusing on both artifacts and societies would be very cool if they did it right.

You have to be male to start one, and I believe they can only be changed to cognatic after that (assuming your religion allows gender equality).

In that vein, I think I've only played one or two times without women's rights set to maximum in the starting rules, so it's trippy to me that someone would find a Calipha so novel. That's a feature I'm very excited for in CK3 though. The ability to further customize religion may finally allow me to let women into the Catholic priesthood (outside of Catharism) and maybe one day we will achieve a Mama in the Vatican.

I've done it before and played as a female leader of a merchant republic, so I don't know what's been happening for all of my games.

edit: my bad, that's only overridden by the status of women rule that I always play with. Oops.

A large part of the enjoyment I get from CK2 is making ahistorical things happen. I like to leave the rules as historical as possible and fight against them. So yeah, it's fun to establish a female caliphate in a world and time where that would be totally unheard of. Not sure why that's "trippy."

No, I really like that play-style and I love that even CK2 supports so many ways to play. I wasn't sure how to phrase that so I ended up coming off as condescending, I apologize. I have to resort to rule changes to get a lot of the more ahistorical stuff going on because I'm bad at the game, so it surprises me when people encounter that stuff as really novel when it's so base-line for me.
