You're drat right we will!

Hello, my friends! Gather round, gather round! Welcome to what is sure to become an annual tradition in the Games forum providing we don't reach the apocalypse in 2019, it's the Video Games Top 10 Poll of 2018 Results! In the last year we've seen big franchises like Fallout and Metal Gear fall into mediocrity through mismanagement, we've seen a strong resurgence of games out of Japan driven in large part by Capcom's return to form, we've seen AAA developers pushing the boundaries of ethical business practice as a spotlight was shone on crunch culture, we've seen Bowsette. Yes, it's been a year and in 2018 with the gaming industry bigger than ever you can be sure that whatever you're into there's a game out there just right for you. But here's what it all comes down to, which game will take the crown as Something Awful's Game of the Year?

This first run at the thread was a huge success with 59 of the Games forum best and brightest (and also Escobarbarian!) listing their favourite games covering 232 games between the lot of us. With such a wide variety of options available though it was hard for us to agree on a consensus as 45 different games appeared in the #1 spot over the course of the thread. We'll start breaking this countdown down soon but first there's some things we should be keeping in mind...

  • The biggest release of the year was without a doubt Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar's latest offering was the culmination of eight years of development and while the conversation about their treatment of labour will continue it's undeniable that RDR2 is a rare treat. With an open world that lives and breathes around you and a mature and contemplative story it's a game with so much offer. But will it be enough to claim the top slot in our list?
  • RDR2 might have had the most attention but at the 2018 Game Awards it was God of War that took home the prize for Game of the Year. The game has been praised for its nuanced take on Kratos and unique one-take cinematography but us goons are a contrarian lot. Will we be willing to take the same side as the industry insiders?
  • Case in point: in the December chat thread poll it was Monster Hunter World that took the most plaudits, an award well deserved for its vast world and engrossing gameplay. But that was a simple one-vote poll with far less options available. Will MHW still be able to hold up under these wider voting conditions?
  • The other big AAA release for the year was Marvel's Spider-Man which was quickly proclaimed by many as the best superhero game of all time for its faithful ode to its mythos. However, as the year drew to a close it was getting lost in the shuffle against other releases. Will the same hold true in our poll?
  • It wasn't just the big publishers that knocked our socks off this year as some of the best games around continued to come from indie developers and perhaps none were better than Celeste. This moving piece combined pitch-perfect platforming gameplay with an intimate take on mental health but was it good enough to put an indie game in at our #1 spot?
  • That wasn't the only indie game setting our hearts on fire this year as Lucas Pope returned after five years with Return of the Obra Dinn. There was no handholding in this murder mystery as the game challenged you to think for yourself in a moody piece with a beautiful art style all of its own. Is it strong enough to overcome the competition and win the big prize?
  • 2018 was the breakout year for the Yakuza series with a number of releases and ports to new systems on offer that made the franchise impossible to ignore. But with so many options available to vote for which one will rise above the others to be the most popular and will it be enough to get to the top?
  • Right at the end of the year Nintendo graced the world with Super Smash Bros Ultimate and gave us more smash than ever. With a giant roster featuring every character to ever appear in the franchise and a World of Light mode that included spirits from the entire history of video games it felt like a love letter to the medium but has it done enough to win your hearts?
  • And of course this poll wasn't just about games that came out this year and you voted for a wide array of titles. In particular some of last year's games featured regularly in your lists but could the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn or Nier Automata have done enough to pull off the shock upset?

All these questions and more will be answered soon enough but first let's do some housekeeping. Here's how all the games outside our top 30 ranked.

Another edit, UNIST is developed by French Bread. Ecole are the Melty Blood rights owners; French Bread made a Melty Blood fighting game with Ecole, and Sion Eltnum Atlasia makes a crossover appearance in UNIST, but they didn't develop the game.

Excellent countdown, well done Rarity!

Nice to see SoulCalibur VI so relatively high, our crew here's soul burns more than other lists I've seen around. EuroGamer's readers for example didn't have it on the top 50, we've got it at 15, I like it.

And of course we've got a lot of Yakuza fans over here which is great, that got underrepresented in various places. Great to see 0 get so much love here for 2018. I started 0 when it hit in 2017, and finished it in March 2018, so that's a top tier game across the years there. And nice to see Kiwami 2 so high as well.

And a lot of other cool games, glorious stuff folks.

As I said in my list, it intertwines its gameplay and narrative together extremely well and is strongly thematic in a literary sort of way that's still pretty uncommon among games, (It's getting better though, slowly but surely.) and the themes it tackles are still relatively new for games. The Missing is really human and powerful in its approach, it can be really funny one moment and genuinely hard-hitting the next. The characters are great and the ending is absolutely fantastic. The Missing is a must play if you appreciate games as an artistic and narrative medium in any way.

Great job Rarity and thank you for the hard work!

For what it's worth I bought Hitman 2 on holiday sale and it absolutely would have made my top 3 had I started playing it earlier. What an amazing puzzle game that happens to resemble a game about murder. I also got the legacy pack DLC so I guess technically I haven't even started on the Hitman 2 part yet.

I remember watching people play Celeste when it first came out and thinking it looked kind of bland. I ended up picking it up due to all of the praise in this thread and have really enjoyed the first few levels. The movement feels really really good and it has kept things interesting by throwing in new twists to the platforming as I've progressed. It's a neat game!

Currently, lategame performance (Something to do with how trade routes path through gateways/wormholes, last I heard), and the AI struggles to expand properly, it does fine with existing planets it holds but it's slooooow af to get new ones.

Ubiquitus posted:

What did the newest stellar is update break?

the new stellaris update completely ripped out a whole game system and replaced it (tiles are replaced with pop containers and where the former max population of a colony was like 25, now it is uncapped and can be in the hundreds)

the ai cannot handle it and it actually breaks many of the late game crises. like, imagine how bad 4x ai generally is, and then imagine how bad it can get when you start changing fundamental game rules around

they'll fix it eventually probably but it looks like they were in a rush to get this patch out for xmas

also other stuff is broken like the mentioned above performance hit - there's a new trade layer which has to path across the map, and it gets real dumb when gateway networks start getting turned on and so the pathing has to deal with warp holes across the map grid. but stuff like that is bad performance broken and not the game being fundamentally unplayable by its own ai

of course being a paradox game it doesn't matter that much if the end game content is broken because most people never get to it instead of always sticking to the first 50-100 years of a map and then abandoning it but still
