I'm furious about our immigration policy. It's racist, horrifying, and we were literally putting children in internment camps. I'm sure we still are. This poo poo has killed people and should be condemned from the rooftops by the whole loving world. It's a crime against human decency and we should be welcoming immigrants with open arms by the boatload because they work harder, commit fewer crimes, and make this country the economic and scientific juggernaut - and because it's right! What we're doing is not okay, and yes, the fact that this is what we're doing makes me angry because it goes against everything our nation should be - against everything ever nation should be.

There's enough to criticize without implying that we're tattooing people's arms. That's it.

Taking "the high road" in splitting hairs on precisely how dedicated ICE and CBP are to their holocaust cosplay is a terrible decision. Those policies led directly to those images and it doesn't matter who exactly was holding the marker. If they weren't being loving nazis then poo poo that draws extremely blunt comparisons to the holocaust wouldn't happen.

IIRC Spanish Flu was called that because they were basically the only ones that reported it. It haopened right after WWI and what great news to tell everyone who suffered casualties for years already. Other countries were absolutely affected by it. The reason it was so deadly, again iirc, was that it was a different type.

Basically, the first flu we get kinda imprints a "how to kill flu!" Thing for your immune system. Problem is that flu isnt a one-type virus, it has multiple. See H1N1. So the body struggles against different viruses like H1N9 or some poo poo. Sometimes it is really bad. So if you have the "how to kill this virus" guide book, great! If not, uh oh.

The people that mainly died during the Spanish Flu were our age. People that were in the sweet spot between the old enough to have gotten a type of flu like the one ripping a part that area, or young enough to have their body "make a guide about how to kill the flu." Everyone else who already had a flu "guidebook" obviously didnt have their book work and they lost their lives sometimes.

poo poo was wild reading about but its been years.

Was this why people in the young-n-healthy age bracket had that autoimmune response that destroyed their lungs?

A mixture of that and if you're immunocompromised like children and elderly, your body simply can't muster up the autoimmune response that kills you. So you just get the flu.

If your immune system is functioning normally, your body freaks the gently caress out and throws everything at your lungs--this just spirals into a higher fever and more inflammation until either the flu dies or you do.

But the 1918 pandemic flu (and a couple others to lesser extent since) essentially freaked out the immune system so much that it ruined the lungs in a startlingly small amount of time. More than a day, but certainly within 7-10.

Were there guys who survived with permanent lung damage or did it clear up if you managed to survive?

The immune response gettimg bad enough to have caused permanent lung damage also would have likely caused multiple organ failure as it spread throughout the blood so it was rare if it happened at all since once you cleared that "permanent lung damage" bar you were probably going to end up dead from the hypoxia and organ failure.

Nancy is good now because the wind is blowing hard enough that she's grown a spine. If she doesn't seriously stand up to Trump and do it in public she probably won't survive the next leadership challenge. I would have preferred her to not have to wait until the public opinion polls drifted this way but hey, whatever.

Chuck remains the worst.

Pelosi just kind of leads from her base of support or if she's unopposed, the vague middle of the caucus. When the house dems were chock-a-block with blue dogs who were more like 1908 Democrats than 2008 Democrats, she was considerably further toward the right, but managed to pass the ACA in the house with the public option intact.

The blue dogs are gone and lots of the "moderate liberals" have been replaced with better representatives who have naturally pushed that center toward the left. It's the fabled overton window, and pelosi has the added benefit of knowing who her opposition is. She might not pass any federal rent control laws since she still has to represent her extremely wealthy constituents.

works out fairly well, there's like 8 decent bars within a couple blocks in any direction so if you wanted to throw some axes and then drink proper it's not like you have to get another ride but who knows how it'll get if they drop one in a less dense area.
