Today at 3pm Rep Hoitenga and Senator-Elect Vanderwal will be at Hermann's in Cadillac to hold a listening session with constituents. Will def wear my yes on 2 hoodie, but should I wear the piss tape is real hat?

Issues we will discuss with the incoming politicians:

Senate Bill 1171 – Minimum Wage Hike Reduction
Senate Bill 1175 – Paid Sick Leave Reduction
Senate Bill 1176- Reduce oversight of charities donating to campaigns
Senate Bill 1188-1194 – Prohibits local governments from curbing tree cutting
Senate Bill 1238-1240- Legislation to obliterate voter approved changes to election laws
Senate Bill 1254 - The constitutional amendment passed by Proposal 2 provides sufficient rules for the Commission to be self-executing, meaning that the restrictions contained in SB 1254 are unnecessary and unconstitutional
Senate Bill 1254- also arbitrarily fines people who want to participate in redistricting panels
Senate Bill 1252- Shifts campaign finance law from Secretary of state to governor
House Bill- 6553- Allows House of Reps and Senate to intervene legally, overriding courts.
Senate Bill 796- Systematic attack on Union Rights

In good news, the lame-duck bill to strip homegrown marijuana from the new marijuana law that passed by ballot referendum died.

snyder: the law was “well intentioned but would have resulted in cost and compliance burdens foe job providers that could have negatively impacted employment in Michigan.”

you have to be supremely nihilistic to buy into free market dogma, or extremely privileged, because this essentially means “be lucky for the poo poo jobs that you have because companies cant afford to pay their workers a livable wage.”

and i really really cant stand snyders use of corporate euphemisms. proof “moderate” and “well behaved” republicans are just as insidious and evil as the carnival barkers.

Snyder fast-tracked this legislation through to ensure Governor-Elect Whitmer had no chance of vetoing it, something she stated she would do. What this means is Enbridge can continue to pump oil through this pipeline that sits on top of the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac where it has for the past 70 years with no upgrades or updated safety measures to make sure the straits don't become an oil slick. Whether the tunnel ever gets built or not is moot - the point of this deal was to make sure Enbridge's pipeline stayed open for the next 10 years.

Shame duck is over in Michigan. All that is left is for the nerd to sign the bills passed.

How many bills did Republicans ram through the state leg during the final weeks of the session? 408. They passed 360 during the entire year before the lame duck.

1254, the bill that would have garrotted the new redistricting commission died. 6595, however, passed through both houses of the legislature and is headed to Snyder's desk.

Michigan Campaign Finance Network has a nice breakdown of who funds the politicians passing bills over environmental issues.

https://twitter.com/MichiganCFN/status/1076474747012214784

Michigan Republicans also decided to pay for roads by leaching more money from the School Aid fund. When I started teaching at my last school three years ago and saw the condition of the classroom materials I was told there was no money in the budget for new books and to use this online curriculum that had already been abandoned and links to materials were disappearing. It is still the officially approved curriculum for Michigan schools to use.

Which according to this attorney is completely unconstitutional.

Nick Krieger posted:

1. The signature-gathering requirements for initiatives/referenda are constitutionally and legally entirely unrelated to the signature-gathering requirements for gubernatorial candidates.

2. The Michigan Constitution does not set forth any requirements whatsoever concerning the number and type of signatures required on gubernatorial nominating petitions. Indeed, the Constitution gives the Legislature the exclusive authority to “enact laws to regulate the time, place and manner of all nominations . . . .” So, yeah, the Legislature is perfectly free to pass a statute requiring a certain number of signatures from each congressional district, judicial circuit, county, school district, or whatever on gubernatorial nominating petitions.

3. In contrast, the Michigan Constitution sets forth an exhaustive list of requirements concerning the number and type of signatures required on initiative and referendum petitions, and only gives the Legislature limited authority “to implement” (not to alter or add to) the requirements.

4. The delegates to the Constitutional Convention made clear that Const 1963, art 2, § 9 was intended to be self-executing. The Legislature may not enact laws imposing additional requirements beyond those stated in a self-executing constitutional provision, but may only pass laws necessary to facilitate its administration.

I’m kind of amazed that they neither put an appropriation in it nor gave it their phony immediate effect. Bring on the referendum.

Fun Michigan legislative fact: After a successful referendum struck down Snyder's first emergency manager law, they made it much more difficult for signature collection. They also started tacking appropriations on everything they didn't want to be challenged by a petition.

Bill 6553 would have diluted the Attorney General's power by giving the state legislative oversight powers. Snyder decided that wasn't a good idea and vetoed it.

https://twitter.com/nickrmanes/status/1078809520078577664

The Nerd Fund was a private fund Snyder set up to do things like pay people he put in government jobs more money so they would make a salary more like they would in the private sector. There was lots of controversy surrounding the Nerd Fund so he got rid of it, only to replace it with two new funds.
