I guess it’s funnier in the context of the French communist party polling at 3% nationwide. When they still fielded candidates for major elections anyway.

edit : that and the fact that students have been enduring brutal beat downs by the police for a week now

Took some real short videos yesterday, this was close to the Arc de Triomphe :

and the same place about 10 minutes later

From what I watched of your video Flowers I think we must have crossed each other near quai d’Orsay. I ended up at the Champs-Élysées around 5pm when the pigs trapped a hundred of us in a small street, blocked both sides and gassed everyone in the middle with no way out causing mass panic and some people to faint. I’m claustrophobic and this poo poo seriously got to me so I called it a night there. They still kept us for more than an hour, checking bags and letting us leave by groups of 10 so we wouldn’t regroup further away.

Another fantastic highlight was getting shot inches from my face with a rubber projectile for doing nothing. Glad I didn’t lose an eye on that one like that poor 20yo girl that made the news. :(

Yeah I heard the same yesterday but when I accessed the Champs at Franklin Roosevelt they were posted at the edge of the garden, letting people in and out. To be honest it was a kinda crappy place to be so you were right to leave. They played ping pong with us up and down the avenue, they had this thing on full lockdown. Witnessed some heroic stuff though, like these guys holding up their banner to the cops faces in a cloud of teargas for minutes with no gas masks or proper equipment. Props to them.

If there's any truth to the media reports that the protests include members of the far right and the far left, would they not be beating each other up? My instinct is that it's mostly people on the far left confronting the cops and that the far right is sat at home taking credit online, but it seems impossible to find any coverage that confirms or denies this.

From what I saw the far right is indeed present but not nearly as ubiquitous as the 24h news media would have you believe. I personally don't mind their presence as long as they eat some flashballs for the rest of us (and keep their poo poo to themselves). They might not be fighting for the right reasons but at least they're fighting the right enemy.

I dunno if they reformed elsewhere but the rain made the experience not that fun

highlights include: a group of black evangelicals managing to interrupt our march by shouting in a megaphone "there’s only one thing that can help us! it’s a name, and that name is jesus!", booing the cops every time they showed up, extremely anticapitalist chants, and helping a shopkeeper get her wares inside, close her shop and then have her join us.

That's better than anything I did today which was a whole lot of walking under cold rain. Cops had everything locked up pretty tight, they even blocked buses coming to Paris:

In a radio interview, former education minister Luc Ferry called for the police to fire live rounds at protesters and "be done with it".
He followed that up by adding that France was the 4th military power in the world, concluding "they should be able to put an end to this crap". Yikes.

Of course he backpedaled like a little bitch on social media:

https://twitter.com/FerryLuc/status/1082689836979552258

"I obviously never called for yellow vests to be shot (he totally did though) and I have always supported the movement. (he never did) I'm just asking for policemen to be allowed to use their non lethal weapons against people who are out to kill them. Understood ?"

That defense would work better if 1500 people hadn't been mutilated already by grenades, teargas pellets and rubber balls to the face but hey, maybe I'm too stupid to understand what he's actually saying. :v:

why do all french cops just wear jeans? don't they have a uniform or something? is it so that ministerial aides can blend in more easily?

During these riots you're bound to encounter 3 types of cops. Knowing the difference might be key to saving your life and (hopefully) keeping your eyeballs intact:

The good : gendarmerie mobile

They are the chillest of the lot. They're part of the army unlike the others, and receive very good training. They won't aggro you unless you start throwing poo poo at them (I know, it's tempting) or set a bank on fire. (ditto) They look really cool in their stormtrooper gear. How do you tell them apart from the other stormtroopers ? They ride blue vans and wear blue helmets. They typically use batons, teargas and grenades. Oh and they get to play with APC-like vehicles. Deep down when you ask them they do support the current social movement. You still don't want to hang out with them any longer than you have to.

The bad: CRS (Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité)

Imagine the gendarmerie mobile without the chill. These guys can't wait for an excuse to beat you and your family down. They use the same gear as the guys above minus the APCs but they get some fancy poo poo like water cannons instead. They like to escalate poo poo by charging and pushing people around and throwing grenades like they're candy.

The ugly:
BAC and BRI

They're brutish morons, they're assholes, they're low key fascists on an ego trip, and some -I assume- are good people. Meet the BAC. Remember tweet #7 ? That's them. Normally these guys arrest drug dealers and other criminals in high rises. In their mind everyone is a criminal. They absolutely WILL beat the poo poo out of you for no reason. They get poo poo training, poo poo pay, and are responsible for most casualties since all this began. Even the CRS and gendarmes don't want to work with them. Expect to eat rubber bullets and stun grenades straight in the face. On occasion they also operate in full civilian clothing (hence the jeans) to infiltrate protests, break poo poo down and help make arrests.

Hope this helps!

Sassy Sasquatch

Vitamin P posted:

It really did, I didn't know the BAC were even allowed to be active on 'crowd control'.

See that's 99% of the problem there. Joking about cops aside, these guys are underpaid, overworked, and most importantly they are inadequately trained and equipped to be working crowd control missions like these. Want an example ? Those flashballs they're blinding people with: they get training once a year at most. This is done at a range where they get to shoot 5 times at stationary targets, with 0 stress or conditioning.

For a little analogy this is like sending attack dogs to herd sheep. Of course they're going to bite and maul that's what they're trained to do. The problem there isn't just the dog, it's the idiot who let it off the leash.
