Huh. I stand corrected. Somehow I missed this and didn't hear about it until years later. I actually like that promo outside of that line.

SatoshiMiwa posted:As bad as Crown Jewel is the Owen Hart stuff is still the single worst thing the company has done Part of me can't shake that the interview with Brian Pillman's wife as the absolute worst thing they've ever done. Without condoning either, I can still at least understand the Owen and Crown Jewel stuff on some level. The Pillman interview just horrifies me.

Not sure I dig this gender-flipped reboot of Booker T vs. Triple H.

TheKingslayer posted:Remember when Vince had Bischoff rape his wife in kayfabe? Vince really had his finger on the pulse ya know? What about that time when Vince was going to be forced to face the Undertaker in a Buried Alive match and he went on this loving insane promo where he ordered Paul Heyman to 1) have the Undertaker's children kidnapped, 2) have terrorists blow up the Undertaker's house and 3) have a biker gang rape the Undertaker's wife while Undertaker is forced to watch.

I'm surprised X-Pac in blackface isn't on the list. That one always rubbed me the wrong way because one of the WWE Countdown shows talked up that segment and made sure to take a second to talk up how hilarious X-Pac's impression of Mark Henry was.

Charles Gnarwin posted:drat, my brain must be trying to protect me. It had the turn sooner with them just being partners who cared about each other and people cheering for that but I guess that doesn't make sense considering the company and fan base. I also recall them getting over as comedy faces before the wedding thing. Fans got behind it because they were just blatantly aping the Ambiguously Gay Duo from SNL, which was sort of popular at the time.

I remember hearing that the original plan was for Booker to win, but then it was apparent that they were able to sign Goldberg and Triple H didn't want to lose the title to Booker so he could win it back and drop it to Goldberg. Then they got all "No, this angle isn't racist!" because they knew there was no happy ending and wanted to distance themselves from it.

Voting in this tournament, I put myself in a devil's advocate mindset where I mix trying to see where they're coming from and optimism to root out which choice I feel is worse. For instance, with Hawk, I can jump through the mental hoops that Vince Russo had good intentions and was too incompetent and bad at reading the room to make it work. He saw a popular-yet-obsolete tag team flailing and decided to give them a shot in the arm in the same style that was causing the company so much success. It crashed and burned, but at least they had the decency to end the storyline soon after, right? Reid Flair was at least meant to garner sympathy for a face and was an ill-conceived attempt to get heat on a feud. It was horrid and shouldn't have happened, but at least I can see why they did it. With the Melanie Pillman thing, I don't even know. It's uncomfortable and gross and it exists for absolutely no reason. I'm likely to vote that over anything it's up against because I can't even try to see that segment through Vince's eyes. What the gently caress.

Suplex Liberace posted:Please tell me that was Black Machismo Jay Lethal It was. The gag was that he was admitting that the Mega Powers exploding wasn't Hogan's fault. Anyway, I voted Pillman. The Elizabeth stuff is horrible, but it still boils down to being petty to your perceived enemies. The Melanie Pillman interview is just inexplicable and gross and they were on her side.

ChrisBTY posted:Was Rock gone by Summerslam? Rock was done by Backlash. Part of his WrestleMania win was the writing on the wall that "beating Steve Austin at WrestleMania" was the only thing left for the Rock. Afterwards, he had no reason to stick around and he just put Goldberg over before going back to Hollywood. He didn't appear again until next WrestleMania's build and after WMXX, he didn't wrestle for another eight years.

D.N. Nation posted:So Vince/WWE hates Warrior and either wholesale ignores him or makes the point to trash him, then (???), then he gets inducted into the HOF, then dies, now he's a hero for us all. I think it was the WWE 2K game appearance. 2K Games decided on Warrior being the pre-order DLC and probably dealt with him without using WWE as a middleman (they have a history of doing things against WWE's wishes. See also: "You don't want Punk! You want Sheamus!"). Warrior did business with them and even appeared in an ad for the game. After the fact, Triple H got in touch with him and offered him the marquee spot in that year's HOF induction.

Even if Owen's death was their fault, the idea of keeping the show going is at least somewhat excusable as a panicked decision where hindsight is 20/20. The Saudi deal was something they decided on and agreed to with a clear head.

MassRafTer posted:When they cleared their heads they decided to keep trying to profit off Owen's death as much as they could so why give them the benefit of the doubt? Oh, they were gross about it, but they could have gone farther. But in the end, the OTE situation was something where I can feel sympathy for what they did, even if it isn't deserved in the end, and at this point in the tournament, that's all you need. We're just coming off a poll where my train of thought was "Okay, yes, they celebrated a murderer's legacy, BUT!"
